Universal Hagar’s Spiritual Church records, 1925-2014 (majority within 1999-2012)

Universal Hagar’s Spiritual Church was founded by Father George W. Hurley in 1923 in order “to promote the study of the science, phenomena and philosophy of spiritual religion” and is based in Detroit. The record group includes some material from the early years of the church’s operation, but with the bulk of the records documenting church activities after the year 2000.

The record group is arranged in three series: Background, Church Activities, and Publications.

Students' Army Training Corps (University of Michigan) records, 1918-1919

United States Army program to train some of its members at participating universities and colleges (including the University of Michigan) in various technical skills. Records include correspondence, course materials, background information, membership records; and financial information.

The record group is arranged into four series: Correspondence and Other Documents; Course Work and other Bound Material; Membership Information; and Financial Records. Within the bound records, there is a volume relating to the history of the Corps. This volume also includes photographs depicting the training of students in auto mechanics, as telephone electricians, and in other technical courses and exercises.

Photographs taken during the Polar Bear Expedition to northern Russia, and accumulated by several veterans; include scenes of American soldiers in camp and on patrol, of life in Archangel and in Russian villages, and of battlefields, fortifications, armored trains, ships, airplanes, burial rites, and graves. Also includes a list of photographs and their captions.

About 185 photographs. The photographs include scenes of life in Archangel, armored trains, villages, port facilities, rural life, men in barracks, fortifications, prisoners, group portraits, men on patrol and in camp, the railroad, an airplane, burials, and graves. Also included is a "List of official U.S. photographs illustrative of the activities of the North Russian Expeditionary Force" which contains descriptions, including names and locations, of ca. 575 Signal Corps photos, arranged by photo number.

United Church of Christ. Michigan Conference records, 1840-2013

The Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ was formed from the merger of the Michigan Conference of the Congregational Church and the Michigan-Indiana Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church. The record group includes retired records of individual associations, conferences, and local churches. Also included are files on churches and pastors within the Conference.

This record group is comprised primarily of records of the associations and conferences that make up the United Church of Christ Michigan Conference. The records document the mergers between smaller conferences to make the larger ones of today. These records are largely made up of correspondence, minutes, agendas, conference materials, and programming information.

Besides records of the individual associations and conferences, the collection also contains an extensive amount of records from individual churches, which can be found in the "Records from individual churches" and the "Church files" series. Because their relationship to each other is unknown, these series were not combined. The "Church files" series are records that may have been stored by the Michigan Conference rather than the individual churches. The "Records from individual churches" concerns materials that belonged to the individual churches. Whether these churches belonged to the smaller associations that make up the Michigan Conference is unknown. Therefore, they were kept separate. More information on these series can be found in the individual series' description below.

Unistrut Corporation (Wayne, Mich.) records, 1922-1990 (majority within 1929-1966)

Company established by Charles Attwood who was inventor and developer of a system of precast metal frame construction that came to be known as the Unistrut system. The company was originally known as Deceleco. The record group includes background and historical information about Unistrut; job files containing records pertaining to the planning and execution of Deceleco's contracts, 1929-1932; product literature and catalogs, 1927-1981; publications resulting from research into the Unistrut system of construction; and photographs.

The Unistrut Corporation records cover the establishment and development of two companies founded by the architect Charles Attwood. The records offer information about the products produced and sold by these companies. Included in the records are background information pertaining to the Deceleco and Unistrut companies, job files documenting the planning and execution of Deceleco contracts, catalogs and product literature, publications that resulted from research into the Unistrut system of construction, and photographs largely depicting tests of the space frame system designed by Charles Attwood.

Some of the photographs dated in the 1920s were taken by Underwood's father, Jacob Hanselman (1853-1948). Hanselman was a professional Michigan photographer who worked in East Saginaw, Manistee, and Ann Arbor.

The Robert Twining collection is comprised of photographs, scrapbooks, slides, negatives, and films of Camp Al-Gon-Quian. Located on Burt Lake, Michigan, the camp was founded in 1925 by Herbert H. Twining as a summer camp for boys. The materials in the collection detail activities of Camp Al-Gon-Quian, such as fishing, archery, and horseback riding. There are also materials relating to Camp Mississauga, which was a camp for older boys in Canada.

Pioneer in the private camping movement, founder and director of Al-Gon-Quian Boys Camp on Burt Lake in Cheboygan County, Michigan, and officer in the American Camping Association. Correspondence, articles, speeches and photographs; also Camp Al-Gon-Quian materials, including program files, reports, roster files, and published yearly programs; materials of King family, missionaries in China; and plans of Twining home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, originally designed by Albert Kahn and his associate Malcolm for Louis A. Strauss.

The papers of Herbert Twining, except for an earlier family letter from 1888, date from the 1920s to 1980. The collection is broken down into a series of personal and family materials, a series on Camp Al-Gon-Quian, 1931-1967, and photographs.

Tuomy Family papers, 1840-1966 (majority within 1905-1945)

Pioneer Ann Arbor, Michigan family, involved in farming, then real estate, developed the Tuomy Hills area of the city. Papers include personal and business correspondence of Cornelius and Kathryn Tuomy and of other family members; ledger books, 1868-1890, 1911-1938, and diaries, 1920-1921, 1925, 1926, 1936 concerning business and personal affairs; also papers of Kathryn G. Tuomy as president of the Michigan Federation of Business and Professional Women; and photographs.

The Tuomy Family papers document the daily life of three generations of a pioneer Ann Arbor area family. The three linear feet of papers span the years 1840-1966 with the bulk of the material falling within the decades bound by 1905-1945. The papers have been divided into four series, a small set of documents with biographical information, a larger set of personal and business correspondence, and family material arranged as a set of topical files. There is also a box of unidentified family portraits

A strength of the Tuomy Family papers is the documentation of daily life for a prominent Ann Arbor family from 1900 until the 1960's. Kathryn G. Tuomy's materials provide good exposure to the life of an Ann Arbor woman who has a university education and a family business to maintain. The papers are weaker in their coverage of the Tuomy and Tuomy real estate business. There is only marginal documentation regarding Cornelius W. (Bill) Tuomy's time in political office as drain commissioner. The photographs are not strongly backed up by the written documentation regarding the Tuomy and Tuomy real estate office and properties.

Triangle Foundation records, 1987-2007 (majority within 1990-1994)

The Triangle Foundation is a gay and lesbian civil rights and advocacy organization, located in Detroit, Michigan and formed in 1990. Its programs include an anti-violence project, media activism, and legislative education on gay civil rights. The record group includes minutes; correspondence; press releases and publications of the Triangle Foundation; news clippings documenting issues relevant to the gay/lesbian community and of Triangle activities; and videotapes of local cable television newsmagazine Lambda Digest.

This record group documents the administration and activities of this advocacy organization to bring public attention to issues impacting the lives of gay males and lesbians. The records include both paper and visual materials and have been divided into eight series: Audiovisual Materials, Administrative, Civil Rights, Hate Crimes, Legislative/Political, Miscellaneous, Other Organizations, Religion, and Publications and Clippings.

Muriel Webb Treman collection, 1920s-1930s

Muriel Webb Treman, a hobbyist photographer, and her husband, Robert "Bob" Treman, an American missionary, lived and worked in China in the 1920s. Muriel directed her interest in photography to taking pictures of their experience as missionaries. This collection is comprised of a photograph album documenting a family voyage from the United States to destinations in China and Japan. Also, family films and films depicting pottery making in China.

This collection, comprised of one photograph album and four 16 mm film reels, documents the voyage of Muriel Webb Treman, Robert "Bob" Treman, Lou and Ella Webb, and an unidentified young boy, possibly Muriel's brother, to China and Japan. Photographs in the album depict scenes of travel, landscapes, animals, and people taking part in daily activities, work, and ceremonies. Photographs also document Chinese refugees and instances of anti-Japanese demonstration, such as burning of Japanese goods. Destinations of the family trip, most likely, include the following places in China and Japan, respectively, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Nanking (now Nanjing), Nikko, Mt. Fuji, and Deer Park in Nara.

Muriel Webb Treman, most likely, took many of the photographs and assembled the album, totalling 96 pages of primarily silver gelatin prints. Extant captions appear in white pencil under photographs, and additional captions, provided by the donor on post-it notes, were photocopied and interleaved with the original album pages. The four 16 mm film reels contain six Lockwood and MacDonald family films. Films include: "Lockwood family movie" (1936), "Pottery making in China" (undated), "MacDonald" (c1925), "MacDonald" (1936), "MacDonald" (c1939), "MacDonald Pottery" (undated). Description of films is taken from reel cores and/or film containers.

Secretary to Michigan governor Chase S. Osborn, later assistant to the secretary general of the Nuremberg Medical Trial, 1946-1947. Correspondence, writings, and International Military Tribunal files; also photographs.

The papers of DeHull Norman Travis include one linear foot of material in addition to five outsize items stored separately. The collection covers the period from the start of his law practice in 1909 through his death in 1960. However, most of the collection relates to Travis's work at the Nuremberg War crimes trials.

The collection is a combination of the personal papers of James W. Toy and the records of the university office (originally named Human Sexuality Office, then Lesbian-Gay Male Programs Office, and later Lesbian-Gay Male-Bisexual Programs Office) where he worked for twenty-three years.

The James Toy Papers covering the period from the late 1960s to 1995 have been arranged into three series: Lesbian Gale Male Bisexual Office, Topical Files, and Correspondence. These groupings were created by the processing archivists as there was no apparent order to the materials as they were received. In 2008, two series-Spectrum Center 1998-2004 and The Peninsula Group were added.

The Office of Equity and Diversity series contains materials from Toy's work with that section of the Office of Human Resources and Affirmative Action. Materials include meeting agendas and minutes, project files, and notes.

Harry A. Towsley papers, 1876-1990

Pediatrician, professor and philanthropist, joined University of Michigan Dept. of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases in 1934, and served with the 298th General Hospital Unit during World War II. Papers include medical school lecture notes, class of 1931 files, medical research files; correspondence, histories, photographs and motion pictures relating to the 298th General Hospital Unit, family history materials including Frank A. Towsley's diary, 1876, and family correspondence, 1878-1926 and photographs.

The papers of Harry A. Towsley provide a broad overview of the many facets of his career, including his medical education at the University of Michigan, his service with the 298th General Hospital during World War II, and his professional career as a pediatrician and educator. The collection is arranged in eleven series as follows: Biographical Material; Correspondence; Family History; Foundation Relations Committee Files; General Files; Iodine and Goiter Research; Pediatric Files; Student Notes; Reunion Files; 298th General Hospital Records; and Films.

The Lynn Township papers consist of materials relating to his public relation role on behalf of the Chrysler Corporation. The collection consists of speeches, clippings and magazine with articles by and about Townsend, and a scrapbook given to him in recognition of his work with the Economic Growth Council of Detroit. The photographs in the collection are of Townsend with political figures and celebrities, inspecting Chrysler plants overseas, and participating in various social functions.

Officer in the Philippine Constabulary, Ifugao, Mountain Province. Official communications, including orders and promotion and appointment material; biographical sketches of residents of Ifugao Subprovince; printed material; and photographs. The collection also includes "Record Historico. Del Settlement de Quiangan, Sub-Provincia Ifugao, Provincia Montafiosa" by Second Lieutenant Maximo Meimban, P.C.

The collection includes official constabulary documents, including orders and promotion and appointment material. In addition, there are biographical sketches of residents of Ifugao Subprovince and miscellaneous clippings and printed material. Spanish-language "Record Historico. Del Settlement de Quiangan, Sub-Provincia Ifugao, Provincia Montafiosa" (translated from Spanish as "Historical Record of the Quiangan Settlement, Ifugao Sub-Province, Montafiosa Province") by Lt. Maximo Meimban, describes Ifugao land and villages. Within the Photograph series will be found six albums containing photos of Philippine Constabulary and U.S. Army personnel, and other colonial officials, Philippine people of the Mountain and Nueva Vizcaya provinces including Bontoc, Igorot, and Ifugao people, headhunter ceremony, travel in China, and a visit of Dean C. Worcester to Ifugao.

Irving Tobocman papers, circa 1955-2017

Irving Tobocman (1933-2017) was a University of Michigan alum and Birmingham, Michigan, architect whose Bauhaus-influenced works—while primarily concentrated in the Metro Detroit area—can be found throughout the world. Tobocman was active from circa 1956 to 2017. The collection documents Tobocman's professional career designing commercial, religious, and residential buildings, and includes architectural drawings, contracts, correspondence, legal documents, notes, photographs, publications, reports, and specifications.

The Irving Tobocman papers document Tobocman's professional career designing commercial, religious, and residential buildings, primarily in Metro Detroit. The materials in this collection, which are dated from 1955 to 2017, include large architectural drawings—such as elevation, floor, framing, and mechanical drawings—as well as topographical surveys and smaller materials that were originally rolled with the larger drawings. Also included are contracts, correspondence, drawings, legal documents, notes, photographs, publications, and specifications.

Researchers interested in specific projects should consult materials in both series. Project job numbers have been indicated when possible, although many drawings and files lack job numbers.

Robert Tisch Papers, 1978-1997 (majority within 1980-1982)

Property tax reform advocate in the late 1970s and early 1980s from Laingsburg, Mich.; 1982 Michigan gubernatorial candidate, and founder of the Tisch Independent Citizens Party. Tisch was also active in the U.S. Taxpayers Party. Material pertaining primarily to Tisch's three campaigns to lower property taxes, as well as later political activities. Political files series consists of clippings, constituent correspondence, campaign business (official correspondence, minutes, ballot proposals, speeches), press releases, political cartoons, and copies of the Michigan Taxpayer, the newsletter of the U.S. Taxpayers Party of Michigan.

The Robert Tisch Papers consist primarily of material pertaining to Tisch's three campaigns to lower property taxes, his 1982 gubernatorial campaign, and his later political activities with the Tisch Independent Citizens Party (which later became the Michigan Taxpayers Party, a political affiliate of the U.S. Taxpayers Party). The Tisch Papers are made up of two series: Political files and Memorabilia. The collection is composed primarily of press coverage of the Tisch campaigns in the form of newspaper clippings, kept by a clippings service and by Tisch himself. Within files, material is arranged chronologically. Items for which a date could not be ascertained are in the back section of each folder or are in separate folders labeled "undated."

The Chrystal G. Tibbs Papers comprise over a half-century of documents pertaining to Tibbs's membership in various chapters of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and to the history of the sorority at large. Founded at Howard University in 1908, A.K.A. was the first sorority established by African-American women and currently has approximately 250,000 members. The collection's four series contain papers pertaining to Tibbs's personal participation in sorority activities (including those related to her tenure in various administrative posts), materials from several Michigan chapters, sorority publications, and audiovisual materials. In addition, the collection contains work done by Tibbs and family members to document the Powell, Webster, and Winchester family history.

The Chrystal G. The collection contains Thorpe's personal and professional correspondence between 1921 and 1959. The collection also includes some letters to his wife after Thorpe's death. Within the correspondence are materials relating to the Fred Newton Scott Anniversary Papers. Also included is A list of books in Thorpe's personal library, teaching materials and course evaluations, notes for lectures and notes and typescripts of articles on Addison, Coleridge, Hunt, Hazlitt, Keats, and other Romantic poets and critics. There are also works on other topics and figures in English literature.

Other materials relating primarily to Thorpe's literary activities are retained by the Rare Book Room of the University of Michigan Graduate Library. These include correspondence relating to John Keats: The Complete Poems and Selected Letters which Thorpe edited, and materials relating to activities of the Modern Language Association's Joint Bibliography Committee for the groups designated as General Topics II and English IX involving nationally and internationally known scholars of the Romantic movement.

Andrew Tanner was photographer, born in Missouri, who traveled about the United States. He lived for a time in Ann Arbor, Michigan and on Coryell Island (part of the Les Cheneaux Islands) in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The collection consists of glass plate negatives of images taken while in different parts of the United States and Mexico.

The Andrew Tanner Photograph Collection includes glass plate negatives from his travels across the United State and in Mexico in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Images in the collection demonstrate in a vivid way life in the United States, the natural environment, and the photographic processes of the time. The plates are in excellent condition and images are of very good quality. Tanner's original plate numbers are indicated on the slides, and where known, are indicated on the sleeves containing the plates; some plates were also assigned numbers by their intermediate owner, Jack Kausch, and, where known, these are also indicated on the envelopes. The images in the collection (14 boxes) date from 1894 to 1909, and are organized into three series: 5x7 Plates, 1894-1909 (13 boxes), 8x10 Plates, ca. 1900 (1 linear foot), and Miscellaneous (1 linear foot).

Democratic governor of Michigan, 1961-1963; gubernatorial office files, campaign files, papers from his career as state senator and lieutenant governor.

The John B. Swainson collection consists of four subgroups of files: pre-gubernatorial (covering the period of 1943 to 1960), gubernatorial (covering his one-term, two-year tenure as the state's chief executive), post-gubernatorial (covering the years since he left the governor's office, 1963 to 1975), and visual materials.

The great bulk of the collection is the gubernatorial subgroup documenting the last months of Swainson's term as lieutenant governor under Governor G. Mennen Williams, the 1960 campaign for governor, his gubernatorial administration, and his unsuccessful campaign for re-election. The importance of the collection, as with all gubernatorial records, is its documentation of public policy issues of the early 1960s and the relationship of the governor to the legislature, to the heads of the state's various boards and commissions, to the federal government, and to the citizens of Michigan.

University of Michigan staff photographer, 1913-1947 and commercial photographer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Collection includes some manuscript material but is primarily photographic prints and negatives made by Swain. Photo subjects include university buildings, faculty, and student activities, archeological expeditions to the Near East and, Ann Arbor scenes and landscapes form his travels in the western United States and Canada.

The papers and photographs of George R. Swain mainly document Swain's accomplishments as university photographer at the University of Michigan from 1913 to 1947. Researchers should note, however, that this is only a sampling of the photographer's work during these years. The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan has an extensive collection of Swain's archaeological negatives and prints, and researchers interested in his full career will want to also look at the Kelsey collection. The Bentley Library material, while including several folders of fine photographs Swain made on his travels with Professor Frances Kelsey, for the most part documents Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.

The collection at the Bentley Library consists of three series: Miscellaneous Papers; Photographers Log; and Photographs (prints; negatives; and lantern slides. Since the bulk of the collection is comprised of early twentieth century images of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, the materials will be of most interest to researchers searching for visual documentation of this part of the state in that time period. There are very few materials beyond the visual, although the lengthy captions attached to many overseas images and the essays, diaries, and letters, are extremely interesting and offer insight into how Swain approached his craft, both as a professional photographer and in his personal work.

John Sundwall was an important figure in public health education, and his papers reflect his broad interests in this area. As a University of Michigan administrator and educator and as an involved member of various professional groups, Sundwall was a thoughtful leader in discussions pertaining to the kind of education and course offerings individuals in various public health positions should receive. More an educator and administrator than a researcher, Sundwall was a responsible and dedicated thinker in the development of public health as a respected profession.

The John Sundwall papers, covering the years 1921 to 1944, consist mainly of records maintained by Sundwall in his capacity as director of the University of Michigan Division of Hygiene and Public Health. There are no papers prior to his coming to Michigan in 1921 and only scattered papers after 1941 when the School of Public Health was established.

The Sunderland papers are very complete for the early years of his career (1868-1887). The records document the administration and to a lesser degree, the activities of the Summit Medical Center corporation and its clinics. Photographs include portraits of founder, Edward Pierce, and other staff physicians; and photographs of building, staff, and patients.

The records of the Summit Medical Center are arranged alphabetically by topic. The records contain information pertaining to years as early as 1969, and as late as 2003. The bulk of the records were produced between 1970 and 1985, inclusive. The records document the administration and to a lesser degree, the activities of the Summit Medical Center corporation and its clinics. The administration of the Packard Community Clinic as an independent corporation (from 1979-2003) is also documented in a separate file titled Packard Community Clinic. Some of the records also document the relationships between SMC and the major insurance companies, the Johnson Foundation, the Model Cities Program, the Washtenaw County Word of God Community, and John Williams, DDS. The Sam Sturgis collection consists of photographic prints and copy negatives of Washtenaw and Livingston County life from the 1860s through the 1970s. Collected by Ann Arbor photographer Sam Sturgis and Ypsilanti banker Hazel Proctor from a variety of known and unknown sources, the collection represents many aspects of life in Ann Arbor, Brighton, Chelsea, Dexter, Dixboro, Manchester, Saline and Ypsilanti. Main subject categories include churches, schools, businesses, buildings, University of Michigan buildings, staff, students and campus life, streets, panoramic views, rivers, recreation and family life, including residences, men, women, and children. Evolving modes of transportation, such as railroads, interurban streetcars, automobiles, and airplanes are also depicted.

Prints and negatives are divided into two parallel series, with negative use restricted to Bentley staff for preservation and security purposes. Each series is arranged alphabetically by city or town and, within each geographical grouping, in the order in which Sturgis collected the items. Sturgis began donating his collection to the Bentley in 1966, and, as items continue to be received, numbering is continued within each geographical grouping, in the original collecting and numbering order established by Sturgis. While some numbers were originally intended by Sturgis to designate the origins of the item, if known, this information has also been added to the item description under the heading "source" to facilitate patron and staff use. The Bentley does not hold a complete set of prints and negatives. Information on the current availability of both prints and negatives is included in each item listing.

Each photograph has a unique identifying number. The "Sturgis Number" consists of a one or two-letter series code, followed by a numerical number with decimal or alphanumeric number, such as AA 267.21 or AA 35A. the collection is arranged by city as follows

Information on whether the photograph has been published and therefore has further information provided elsewhere is also included in each item description. Unless otherwise noted, all photographs listed as "published" have been published in a series by the Ann Arbor Federal Savings Bank (AAFSB), with editorial supervision by Sam Sturgis and Hazel Proctor. Availability of the respective print and negative concludes each item entry.

The following books, published by the AAFSB in the early 1970s, are annotated with Sturgis' photograph numbers and may be used as a partial guide to the collection. While two copies of each publication are available for consultation in the reading room, only one of each set has annotations. Descriptive captions in these publications as well as the annotated numbers may differ from actual photograph numbers and other information about the photographs. Any reference to these annotations should be verified with the item lists and vice versa to assure accuracy because of occasional inconsistencies. The records of the St. Peter's Evangelical Church cover the period of 1856 to 1985 with the majority of the materials falling within the years of 1916 to 1960. The early records are in German, but most of the records from about 1920 are in English. The record group contains documents pertaining to the founding and history of the church, as well as its articles of association, bylaws, and constitution. Financial reports from 1939 to 1952, general correspondence, membership records, publications, announcement books, and records of the meetings of the Church Council and various committees from 1856 to 1961 are also included. There are photographs and pictures of the various pastors who have served the church over the years. Other audio/visual materials include slides, and cassette and reel-to-reel tapes.

The records of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Lansing, MI, consist of 6.2 linear feet and 1 oversize folder. The materials consist of administrative materials, publications, records of historic events, and several bound volumes of historic materials, including the church's constitution, council meeting minutes, meeting minutes and activities of various women's organizations, and photographs. Bound volumes through c.1920 are in German, reflecting the ethnic origins of the church. The records are arranged into eight series: History, Membership, Property, Administration, Bulletins and Newsletters, Women's Organizations, Sunday School, and Photographs. These materials reflect the evolution of the St. Paul's from a small, German church at the end of the 19th century into an urban church at the end of the 20th century. We know from historic accounts by members and from newsletters that a fire in 1978 destroyed some of the church's records, but there does not appear to be any documentation in the collection that details which records were destroyed.

Leland Stowe papers, 1926-1990

Journalist, free-lance writer, radio commentator, and professor of journalism, University of Michigan, 1956-1969. The collection contains copies of newspaper clippings, correspondence, articles by and about Stowe, and photographs of Stowe and his wife. The materials document Stowe's coverage of the Spanish Civil War and the resulting FBI surveillance of him, his coverage of World War II, his work for Reader's Digest, and his career as a University of Michigan journalism professor. The collection also includes poetry and biographical prose by Stowe.

This collection contains copies and clippings of Stowe's writings, articles about Stowe and his career, and documentation of Stowe's years as a University of Michigan professor. Stowe pulled these materials together for the Bentley quite self-consciously. Although most of Stowe's original papers are maintained in a collection at the Mass Communications History Center of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, this collection is notable for the annotations made by Stowe and for his selection process. It also contains small amounts of original correspondence.

Claude Thomas Stoner Photographs and Papers, 1870s-1977

Dexter, Michigan, collector of materials relating to the history of railroading in Michigan. Correspondence, subject files, printed matter and photographs; contain material concerning the Ann Arbor Railroad, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, the Manistee and Northeastern Railway Company, the Michigan Central Railroad, the Pere Marquette Railroad, and Ephraim Shay.

The Stoner collection contains about 3,600 photographs and negatives collected by Stoner, relating primarily to Michigan railroads. The collection also contains related manuscript materials.

Stoner's major collecting interests were in the Ann Arbor, Grand Trunk Western, and Pere Marquette Railroads and their predecessors, and in logging railroads, especially Ephraim Shay's railroad and others using Shay locomotives. Along with these lines, the collection contains photos of dozens of other railroads, not all in Michigan.

The photographs most commonly depict locomotives, often with their crews posed beside. Other common subjects are railroad stations (exteriors only), train wrecks, trains in motion, logging operations, carferries, railroad bridges, the Detroit-Windsor railroad tunnel, and street railroads.

Dozens of Michigan cities and towns and a number of places in other states are represented in the collection. Places depicted most often in the photos include Ann Arbor, Cadillac, Detroit, Durand, Frankfort, Harbor Springs, and Howell, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.

The collection is organized into seven series: Classified photos, Unclassified photos, Albums, Unclassified negatives, Papers, Classified negatives, and Duplicate material.

Appended to this finding aid are two indexes, one for railroads and company names, the other for subjects. The indexes contain references to all items in the Classified photos, Unclassified photos, Albums, and Unclassified negatives series.

The index to railroads and company names indexes logging and industrial companies that operated railroads, as well as railroad lines themselves. It does not index locomotive manufacturers, nor does it index the names of railroad museums where some of the photos were taken.

The index to subjects indexes place names and topical subjects. It does not index the term "locomotives" since the majority of the photos in the collection would be indexed under that heading. Place names are indexed if the photo includes a view of some part of the place or of some event at the place. Close-up views of locomotives that do not show any background are not indexed by place, even if the description of the photo identifies where it was taken.

Papers of Addison Ray Stone, graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, later assistant surgeon in the 5th Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War, including medical school theses and notes and letters to his wife during the war; papers of William A. Stone, physician concerned with mental illness, assistant superintendent of the Michigan State Hospital for the Insane at Kalamazoo; papers of Dr. Harriette Stone, assistant physician at the State Hospital, containing letters from her father, Samuel P. McCalmont, Republican legislator from Pennsylvania, later founder of that state's Prohibition Party; papers of William A. Stone, Jr., and other members of Stone, McCalmont, Osborn, and Keeler families; and photographs.

The Stone-McCalmont family papers date from about 1832-1930 and contain materials relating to different family members. The collection has been arranged by name of family.

Thomas Stockton (1921-2012) was the manager of Ford Powertrain and Driveline Research at Ford Motor Company. This collection features many of his work papers and diagrams mainly relating to turbine and rotary engine research during his time at Ford, more general Ford documents (ex. Service manuals, project plans, in-company communications, etc.), his various patents and invention disclosures, as well as documents and photographs relating to his time as an officer of the Early Engines Club and a member of the North American Model Engineering Society.

Thomas Stockton (1921-2012) was the manager of Ford Powertrain and Driveline Research at Ford Motor Company for 37 years. The papers within this collection focus primarily on different aspects of Stockton's work career with Ford Motor Company but also contain information on Stockton's involvement within different engineering organizations. The collection is divided into six series: the Early Engine Club series, the North American Model Engineering Society series, the Ford Motor Company series, the Research series, the Patents and Invention Disclosures series, and the Retirement and Consultation series. The collection also contains an Outsize box with materials from different series, marked as such within this finding aid.

The collection contains chiefly the sacramental records of the parish: Baptismal, marriage, and burial records are relatively complete for the period 1901-1978. Records of confirmations and communicants are somewhat less complete. Vestry minutes are incomplete--several volumes of minutes are missing from the collection.

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church of Flat Rock, Michigan, member of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, was formed as a result of the unification of the Church of the Holy Family of East Rockwood and St. Timothy’s of Flat Rock and operated from 1971 to 2001; registers of baptisms, burials, confirmations, and marriages, and other organizational records.

The record group consists of two series: Historical and Genealogical materials and Organizational files. The record group is of most value for its documentation of church activities important to genealogical research.
