A community history project intended to record memories and information about East Quad, the traditional home of Residential College, before the structure underwent significant renovations in the summer of 2012. The collection includes video footage and email correspondence of current and former residents, administrators, faculty, and staff sharing stories about life in East Quad as well as a documentary video, images of murals, and a cookbook from the Halfway Inn café.

The East Quad Memory Project records preserves the memories of East Quad as shared by current and former Residential College students, staff and administrators. The collection provides documents the impact of the College's unique environment on students and will furthermore be of use to those interested in the social life and customs of University of Michigan students. Scrapbook documents Pattengill's time as a student at the University of Michigan. It contains photographs of Pattengill with other students and with her family, football memorabilia, programs, dance cards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and various objects, all dated between 1902 and 1906. Loose scrapbook materials that were found inside the scrapbook, housed in a separate box, include cards and invitations, correspondence, postcards, programs and playbills. The collection includes photographs of Pattengill's future husband Austin T. Brant, her brothers Victor and Craig (who also attended U-M), other family members, and members of her sorority Lambda Rho Tau. Also included in the collection are oversize issues of Chicago Daily Tribune and The Inter Ocean from December 1, 1905 describing the football game between Chicago University and U-M.

Posters and broadsides concerning competition between freshman and sophomore classes at the University of Michigan

The collections consists of 37 poster (21 freshman class and 16 sophomore class) ranging in date from the sophomore class of 1886 to the sophomore class of 1944. The posters are listed by class year--the year a freshman class would graduate. Thus the class of 1910 poster marks the Black Friday event of the Fall of 1906.

The Gargoyle, a University of Michigan humor magazine, was first published in 1909. The collection includes correspondence, ephemera, photographs, reminiscences from Gargoyle staff members, and some original artwork.

Dobbertin organized many reunions and served as a clearing house for Gargoyle ephemera. Women's cooperative dormitory established in 1945 to provide affordable housing and a supportive community for women enrolled in the University of Michigan. The Henderson House records document the administration, activities, cooperative living experience, and history of the house and students who have lived in it. The University of Michigan Housing Public Affairs office disseminated information and served as a spokesman for issues related to student housing. The files were collected or created by Alan Levy who was the director of Housing Public Affairs starting in the 1990s. Levy also held previous positions within the Housing Division. Included are topical files on campus issues and student life policies as well as national and international events impacting the campus community.

These files from Housing Public Affairs, were collected and created by Alan Levy in his roles with the Housing Division, primarily as housing spokesman. Documentation includes files on topics such as alcohol use, capital improvements, crime and safety, diversity in housing, and student deaths. Additionally, the university's response to external events, such as the outbreaks of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), the September 11 Terrorist Attacks, the Virginia Tech Massacre, and Y2K are also documented. Files on rate changes in university housing during the 1970s, and information of the university's purchase and sale of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity house are also found in these records. The Inter-Cooperative Council at Ann Arbor is an organization established to coordinate the activities of cooperative houses founded and operated by University of Michigan students. Their records are comprised of minutes, office files, and newsletters, as well as organization-level topices and related research. The collection also contains records of student cooperative, the Socialist House.

Records of the Law School document the evolution of legal education at the University of Michigan as well as tenures of various deans and faculty. Documentation includes historical and class files; student organizations and activities; planning and construction of Law School buildings; information on William W. Cook and his bequest; topical files; deans' correspondence; reports and minutes. Also included are materials related to the Thomas M Cooley and William W. Cook lecture series and portraits of faculty and students, photographs of activities of the Judge Advocate General's School held at the Law School during World War II, the construction of the Law Quadrangle and Law Library addition, and student activities.

The Law School Records begin in 1852 and span the years through the end of the twentieth century. The records document the history of legal education at the University of Michigan, the administration of the Law School, and the lives of some of the scholars who have studied and taught there.

The Martha Cook Building (MCB) opened in the fall of 1915 as the second all-women's dormitory on the University of Michigan campus. It was a gift of Mr. William Wilson Cook, a lawyer-philanthropist from New York City who was born and raised in Hillsdale, Michigan. The National Council of Negro Women, University of Michigan Ann Arbor Collegiate Section records consists of a digital copy of the organization's 2017 constitution obtained from their Maize Page as well as digital outreach materials captured from their Twitter account, @ncnw-um. The outreach materials include event fliers, images of students at events, and advertisements for open positions in the NCNW-UM section, among others.

The University of Michigan News and Information Services (NIS) acts as the University's media relations office, disseminating information about university programs, research, events, and faculty activities. This collection includes audiovisual recordings of press releases, news briefs distributed to television and radio stations, web-based podcasts and digital videos, and externally produced materials about the University and its activities. Additionally, researchers will find copies of University-produced media from the 1970s to the early 2000s in both audio and video formats.

The University of Michigan News and Information Services Audiovisual Materials contains sound and visual materials produced by the University of Michigan to share with the media as well as materials relevant to the promotion and image of the University. News and Information Services also publishes materials featuring achievements by scholars, recordings of speeches by invited speakers, and media appearances by or about University officials, programs, and scholars.

Chartered in 1964, Sigma Rho is the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti, Michigan graduate chapter of the historically Black fraternity Omega Psi Phi. The collection consists of Sigma Rho's administrative records as well as topical files relating to the chapter's activities. Also included is a video invitation to the 2019 William DeHart Hubbard Scholarship Endowment Dinner.

The Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Rho Chapter records include bylaws, committee reports, correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes, membership rosters, news clippings, publications, and topical files. The collection illustrates the activities of Sigma Rho as well as the positive impact that gifts of time and money given by social/community service organizations have upon their local communities. Dr. Richard E. He was also involved in efforts to commemorate the role that Detroit and its institutions played in the Underground Railroad. The Richard E. Smith papers document Smith's personal and professional activities, particularly his involvement in the Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, professional career as an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN), and efforts to commemorate the role that Detroit and its institutions played in the Underground Railroad. Klein's unbound scrapbook has wooden covers. It contains materials documenting the 1942 J-Hop, student publications including the Beta Banner, and correspondence. Of note is a letter to her from an older male student explaining how to behave in college. The scrapbook also contains photographs, postcards, programs, newspaper clippings, cards, playbills, report cards, and graduation commencement materials.

The Sam Sturgis collection consists of photographic prints and copy negatives of Washtenaw and Livingston County life from the 1860s through the 1970s. Collected by Ann Arbor photographer Sam Sturgis and Ypsilanti banker Hazel Proctor from a variety of known and unknown sources, the collection represents many aspects of life in Ann Arbor, Brighton, Chelsea, Dexter, Dixboro, Manchester, Saline and Ypsilanti. Main subject categories include churches, schools, businesses, buildings, University of Michigan buildings, staff, students and campus life, streets, panoramic views, rivers, recreation and family life, including residences, men, women, and children. Evolving modes of transportation, such as railroads, interurban streetcars, automobiles, and airplanes are also depicted.

Prints and negatives are divided into two parallel series, with negative use restricted to Bentley staff for preservation and security purposes. Each series is arranged alphabetically by city or town and, within each geographical grouping, in the order in which Sturgis collected the items. Sturgis began donating his collection to the Bentley in 1966, and, as items continue to be received, numbering is continued within each geographical grouping, in the original collecting and numbering order established by Sturgis. While some numbers were originally intended by Sturgis to designate the origins of the item, if known, this information has also been added to the item description under the heading "source" to facilitate patron and staff use. The Bentley does not hold a complete set of prints and negatives. Information on the current availability of both prints and negatives is included in each item listing.

Each photograph has a unique identifying number. The "Sturgis Number" consists of a one or two-letter series code, followed by a numerical number with decimal or alphanumeric number, such as AA 267.21 or AA 35A. the collection is arranged by city as follows

Women's honorary society for unaffiliated women students at the University of Michigan established in 1905, one of several Women's honorary societies, including Scroll and Wyvern. Records include minutes, 1916-1927 and 1951-1962, scrapbooks, 1941-1954, 1965-1968, and miscellaneous records and membership information. Scrapbooks include clippings, wartime women's activities during World War II, invitations, membership, and photographs of "tapping" and initiation. Records of Scroll and Wyvern are included in the scrapbooks as is the Assembly Association.

The Senior Society records include minutes, 1916-1927 and 1951-1962, scrapbooks, 1941-1954, 1965-1968, and miscellaneous records and membership information. the records are organized into three series: Organizational Records, Scrapbooks, and Artifacts. Content from the related women's honorary societies Scroll and Wyvern is also present in these records.

University of Michigan student organization established to aid in recruitment, retention, and placement of minority engineering students. Records include minutes, organizational information, and activities material and publications.

The society of Minority Engineers record group is organized into two series Records and Publications. The Records series includes minutes, organizational information, activities material and a brief account of Gardner Leverett's tenure as SMES president, 1990/91.

The Publications series includes Directories and resumé books, programs and a newsletter. The SMES Resumé Book contains the resumés of SMES members. These can be sent directly to personnel departments of major corporations throughout the nation upon request. There is an almost complete run (1979-1993) of this publication in the printed materials subgroup.

The annual SMES Industrial Banquet brings together job candidates and representatives from major corporations in a relaxed, yet professional environment allowing the recruits and the recruiters more personal contact. There is a nearly complete run of the programs for this dinner from 1979 to 1996.

The Solar Car Team is an interdisciplinary student organization at the University of Michigan whose objectives are to design, finance, build and race a solar-powered vehicle from scratch. Publications Includes articles, brochures, directories, newsletters such as the Solar Car Express and the Southern Sun, press releases, programs, prospectuses and regulations regarding the various University of Michigan Solar Car Projects as well as the GM Sunrayce and the Sponsor World Solar Challenge. Also includes two histories describing the 1990 races.

Solar Car Publications (1 linear foot) are divided into six series. The first focuses on the 1990 Sunrayce and World Solar Challenge– Sunrunner. It contains official race regulations, newsletters, programs, brochures, magazines, and photocopies of articles on GM Sunrayce USA and the World Solar Challenge. This series also includes prospectuses which give early details on the budget for and design of the Sunrunner and press releases from News and Information Services, General Motors Corporation and the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.

It also includes two published histories. In Sunracing, Richard and Melissa King write about both the American and Australian races. Because of Michigan's great success in both races the Sunrunner features prominently in this history. It includes a narrative of the races and color photographs of many, but not all the entrants. The second history, Racing With the Sun: The 1990 World Solar Challenge by Chester R. Kyle focuses on the technical aspects of the cars and the race. There are black and white photographs of all the cars entered in the World Solar Challenge with their specifications. There are also rules and regulations for both the GM Sunrayce and World Solar Challenge

The second series focuses on the 1993 Sunrayce and World Solar Challenge– Maize & Blue. It includes brochures, a directory of team members, a fact sheet on the GM Sunrayce, the newsletter Solar Express covering the years 1991-1993, and press releases for both the GM Sunrayce and the World Solar Challenge.

The third series contains material on the 1995 Sunrayce– Solar Vision including the newsletter Solar Express for the years 1993-1995 and press releases on the GM Sunrayce.

The fourth series includes documentation on the 1997 Sunrayce– Wolverine, such as the newsletter Solar Express for 1997 as well as programs and regulations from the race.

The fifth series covers 1999 Sunrayce– MaizeBlaze. It includes brochures and newsclippings from the race and 1998-1999 issues of Solar Express.

The sixth series focuses on the 2001 World Solar Challenge– M-Pulse with brochures and programs from the race as well as issues of the newsletter Southern Sun.

University of Michigan graduate, Class of 1929, member of the Delta Chi fraternity, the Aces Club and the Trojan Club. Scrapbook contains photographs and ephemera documenting Fisher's immediate family, friends, travels, and time as a student. Images include depictions of fraternity and social club activities, graduation exercises, major sporting events, and the University of Michigan's Frosh-Soph Spring and Fall Games.

The Sol Fisher scrapbook contains mostly identified photographs documenting Fisher's immediate family, friends, his travels, and University of Michigan campus life. This includes the 1926 and 1927 Frosh-Soph Spring and Fall Games, and the 1925 Western Conference championship football game between the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Other photographs document Delta Chi fraternity, Aces Club and Trojan Club activities, and the 1927 and 1929 Senior Swing Out exercises. Of note, are three Delta Chi photographs in which chapter members are posing with a small boy of color (identity unknown). A caption above one of the photographs states "Delta Chi-Help."

Also found within the scrapbook are photographs depicting several buildings on U-M campus, including the Law School, Martha Cook building, College of Engineering, and the Student Union building. Other photographs show prominent structures in Detroit, Mich., including the former General Motors Headquarters building and the construction of the Detroit-Windsor Bridge (the Ambassador Bridge).

Remaining materials within the scrapbook include commencement programs and ephemera, publications, and correspondence. Of note is what appears to be a 1928 prank letter addressed to Fisher in which a woman by the name of Sunshine is asking for his hand in marriage.

University of Michigan senior honors society with initiation rites, costumes and other rituals based on supposed Native Amerincan traditions; records include chronological "tribe" files, minutes of meetings, topical files, visual materials, and printed materials.

The records consist of four linear feet, six oversize folders, and one oversize volume, and span the years from 1902 to the present. They document the activities of past Michigamua tribes, the role of the Old Braves within the society, and the development of Michigamua traditions. The records are divided into five series: Chronological Tribe Files, Meeting Minutes, Topical Files, Visual Materials, and Printed Materials.

University of Michigan umbrella and activist student organization that supports and represents different Asian/Pacific Islander American (A/PIA or APIA) organizations and individuals, highlights issues related to the A/PIA community, and builds relationships with allied organizations on and off the University of Michigan campus. The collection documents aspects of A/PIA student communities at the university and includes administrative records, program files and publications, topical files, and correspondence.

The records of the United Asian American Organizations provide a good source of information on issues pertaining to the Asian/Pacific Islander American community and other groups at the University of Michigan. Materials are dated from 1986-2001 and include consitutitons and related foundational documents, correspondence, financial records, meeting agendas and minutes, publications, and topical files.

Publications produced by the Housing Division and its subunits, includes miscellaneous annual reports, brochures, bulletins, calendars, directories, manuals, newsletters, programs, reports, schedules, and statistics of the Housing Division and its predecessors, the Housing Office, Office of Student Community Relations, Office of the Director of Residence Halls, and Office of University Housing. Also includes printed materials from Department of Residence Education, Family Housing, Food Service, Housing Conference Services, Housing Facilities Department, Off-Campus Housing Program, the Pilot Program/College Community Program, and Residence Halls Libraries, and Housing Special Programs.

The Housing Division Publications (10 linear feet) include annual reports, brochures, bulletins, directories, ephemera (including flyers, invitations, posters, and programs), a history, manuals, newsletters, proceedings of conferences sponsored by the Housing Division, and reports. These publications are divided into three series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Topical Publications. The Housing Division publications document the broad responsibilities of this office and its sub-units, including the various housing options, such as family housing, off-campus housing, and residence halls; as well as food and dining services, mediation services, Residence Halls Association, Residence Halls Libraries, and various university housing task forces. Publications of individual residence halls are part of the sub-unit series.

Dance cards from various University of Michigan dances and social events, including the J-Hop, Freshman Frolic, and Michigan Union Formal.

This collection includes dance cards from 1888 to 1947 from various University of Michigan dances and social events. The bulk of the dance cards are from the J-Hop, including different dance cards from the same year. The collection also includes dance cards from both the Michigan Union formal and the Frosh Frolic. The dance cards have been organized by the event and date. In this finding aid, the date refers to the date the dance was held, not the class year of those attending the dance. Other dance cards can be found in various scrapbook collections at the Bentley.

Photographs collected from various sources, depicting buildings, faculty, students, and other topics relating to the University of Michigan.

The University of Michigan Photographs Vertical File represents a miscellaneous assemblage of U of M-related photographs from many different sources, mainly prior to 1950. The vertical file is especially strong on the earliest photographic images of the campus, university buildings, and class activities. While the vertical file contains many images of individuals, researchers should first consult the library's on-line catalog for images of faculty, administrators, and other University personalities. Most photographs originally accumulated by a University department or other unit are kept with that unit's records.

The arrangement of the photographic images was intended to parallel the classification used with University of Michigan published materials and with manuscript materials. Both of these used a classification system using letters of the alphabet (A through N only) for groupings of published or manuscript material. This system was carried over for use with the library's photographic images though there are certain categories for which images are unlikely to be found (Category A, for example, which pertains to legislation affecting the University or Category I which is reserved for university publications of a scientific or literary nature). The classification is further broken down under each letter by a number code which refers to a more specific subdivision. The heaviest concentration of images will be found under C (for U-M schools and colleges, departments, and other units), D (for university buildings and views), and F (for class pictures, photos of student organizations, and images detailing aspects of student life and customs).

Each heading in this finding aid includes the letter classification plus a numbered subdivision. In addition, the individual envelopes are numbered sequentially. Headings for which there are oversized images (usually larger than 8x10) will be indicated by reference to medium or large size photographs. This unbound scrapbook contains invitations and programs to various University of Michigan social events including Junior Hops and commencement exercises from Ann Arbor High School (1874-1877) and the University of Michigan (1874-1877). The scrapbook also contains receipts, report card slips, tickets, school songs, Psi Upsilon Fraternity member death notices, a graduation examination, 1 small publication (titled: A Card), as well as other small souvenirs and ephemera.
