Background

Scope and Content:

The records of the University of Michigan Alumnae Council are divided into two series: Photographs and Meeting Minutes.

Biographical / Historical:

The University of Michigan Alumnae Council was founded in 1917, and its constitution adopted in June 1924. The group was established as a branch of the general Alumni Association, to support the interests of women at the University of Michigan. The Alumnae Council has since come to be an equal organization with the Alumni Association. They raise funds, which they use to support women's housing, such as the Alumnae House and Henderson House, for fellowships and scholarships, and donate to University groups. They also encourage women to enter college, and help them once they arrive at the university.

Their earliest projects focused on the construction of buildings where women could gather. They were instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the Michigan League in 1921, and sports facilities for women. They also funded the construction of women's housing, and were great supporters of establishing women athletic programs.

The Alumnae Council remains active, raising funds for scholarships, and donating money annually to a university project. The Council continues to promote the interests of women, as well as promoting the university to the community.

Acquisition Information:

The photographs were donated in several accessions by the Alumnae Council 60th Anniversary Committee and came to the library in 1976-1977. The minutes were accessioned in 2002 from the Alumnae Council and the Alumni Association (Donor # 6001 and 1617 ).
