Scope and Content:

The Alpha Kappa Alpha, Beta Eta Chapter (University of Michigan) records contain administrative documents, yearbook pages, photographs, and historical information.

Biographical / Historical:

Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated is a historically Black sorority formed at Howard University in 1908 and is the first sorority formed by African American college women. The Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was chartered at the University of Michigan on June 3, 1933 by Ruth Birch, Viola Goin, Mable James, Adele Jones, and Olive Manley.

Since its founding, members of the chapter have been involved in a variety of academic, social, and service activities on the University of Michigan campus. From 2010 to 2015, the Beta Eta chapter was inactive and did not accept new members. The chapter became active again in December 2015 when it initiated twenty seven new members. Beta Eta celebrates academic excellence, compassion, leadership, and sisterhood while promoting service and community outreach.

Donated by Alpha Kappa Alpha. Beta Eta Chapter (University of Michigan) (donor no. 11894 ) in 2018 and 2019.
