Frederick N. Field papers, 1862-1865

The collection consists of correspondence, miscellaneous bank notes and printed material (including documents related to the government of the Confederate States of America), and a photographic portrait. There are six letters (1862-1865) written to his brother in which Field describes Camp Palmer; gives a graphic account of a march in pouring rain and the night spent sitting on shocks of wheat; tells of the capture of their picket line through the use of a countersign countersign; and discusses the soldiers' vote and the practice of enlisting men from the South as substitutes for northern draftees. Field also gives details of the battle in which he was wounded and criticizes officers in command. The collection includes one letter (Sept. 4, 1863) from Capt. George W. Lee relating to transportation charges for Field.

This collection contains digital records; the original papers and/or photographs are owned by the donor. The digital items in this collection were digitized from originals by the individual donors before being received by the Bentley Historical Library. Preservation copies of these files with their original file names and CD-ROM file structures intact have been submitted to Deep Blue. In this collection, the files have been arranged into one series, Papers. Within each series, files are listed numerically according to the file arrangement they were given by the donor. The files in this collection are in JPG format for digitized correspondence, and one DOCX file (transcription of an obituary).

Files include digitized military records and correspondence to his family describing his experience in Archangel Archangel, dated Dec. 3, 1918. Also includes a word processes file transcribing his obituary announcement.

Friedrich Schmid church records, 1833-1875

Friedrich Schmid was a pioneering clergyman, regarded as the first Lutheran pastor in Michigan. He organized the first Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in the state, helped organize some 20 churches in southeastern Michigan, and founded and served as the first president of the Michigan Synod. Collection includes digital images of records of baptisms, marriages, and deaths, 1833-1875.

Materials in this online collection include digitized copies of registers of baptisms, marriages, deaths, and general information about families in the congregations of Salem Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church (along with its precursor organization, Bethlehem Church) in the period between 1833 and 1875.

Fundamental Documents by or about the University Governing Body

The first series of the Regents' records contains Fundamental Documents By or About the University Governing Body, including information regarding the predecessors of the Board of Regents. Included are acts of the Michigan territorial and state legislatures which created or modified the university, as well as relevant decisions of the state Supreme Court. Documents from predecessor bodies include the minutes of the Trustees of the University of Michigan (1821-1837) and the Detroit Classical Academy (1818-1829). Selected Regents' material found in this series include the minutes of the Regents' Executive Committee (1845-1857) and manuscript minutes of Regents' meetings (1837-1870), and online content consisting of bylaws, traffic ordinances, and trademark policies.

This Galens Medical Society record group documents the activities, goals, and membership of the organization from 1914 to 2011. Gardner Stewart Williams Papers, 1900-1945

Ann Arbor, Michigan based hydraulic engineer known for his multiple arch dams, hydroelectric plants, and for developing the Hazen-Williams hydraulic tables, designed and consulted on numerous water power and dam projects. Papers include biographical files, material relating to construction of dams and power plants on the Huron River and elsewhere, and papers relating to Michigan Engineering Society.

The papers of Gardner Williams, 1900-1931, include biographical material; papers relating to the history of Michigan Engineering Society; project files detailing construction of Huron River power plants and dams at Argo, Barton, Geddes, Superior, and French Landing; other Michigan project files for dams and plants in Sault Ste. Marie and elsewhere; Detroit Edison consultation materials; engineering reports by, or including comments of, Williams; and photographs.

The Williams papers came from the offices of Ayres, Lewis, Norris and May, Ann Arbor engineering firm. Obviously a fragment, they cover only the period of 1900 to 1931, with photographs spanning the dates 1900 to 1945.

The collection begins with a folder of biographical material and a folder regarding the history of the Michigan Engineering Society. Except for these, the collection divides into four series: Power Plants and Dams, the Detroit Edison Company, Engineering Reports, and Photographs.

The Gargoyle, a University of Michigan humor magazine, was first published in 1909. The collection includes correspondence, ephemera, photographs, reminiscences from Gargoyle staff members, and some original artwork.

The collection includes various materials and papers from former staff members, primarily from John Dobbertin, Jr. Gargoyle editor from 1962-1964. Dobbertin organized many reunions and served as a clearing house for Gargoyle ephemera. Materials include correspondence, ephemera, photographs, reminiscences from Gargoyle staff members, printed material, and original artwork.

The collection has been divided into two series: Manuscript Materials and Printed Materials.

The GRG papers span the years 1928-1990 and are divided into five series: Biographical Materials; Early Career; University of Michigan; Writings, Speeches, and Scripts; and Audio-Visual Materials. The collection traces Garrison's long and distinguished career in broadcasting, as well as his many years of teaching. The collection with few exceptions has been maintained in its original chronological order.

Gay Delanghe papers, 1961-2006

Performer and professor of modern dance at the University of Michigan. Collection contains subject files relating to Delanghe's activities as a choreographer, dancer, teacher and department chair. Collection also contains photographs and audiovisual material documenting productions with which Delanghe was involved.

The Gay Delanghe papers document a range of Delanghe's professional activities, with particular focus on choreography, teaching, and performing. The bulk of the records originate from the time of her graduation from the University of Michigan in 1965 through the first twenty years of her tenure in the University of Michigan Dance Department. There are few records from her childhood and college years, or from her late career. The records serve to illuminate her engagements as a dancer, and as a teacher, as well as the processes that went into her choreography and the staging of her work. In addition to this finding aid, a performance list exists which attempts to compile information on all of Delanghe's performances for which documentation exists in the collection. This list is available in Performance and Publicity series and upon request.

The collection is divided into ten series of materials relating to various aspects of the professional and artistic activities of Gay Delanghe. These series are: Biographical Materials, Choreography, Correspondence, Funding and Awards, Notebooks, Photographs, Programs and Publicity, Teaching, University of Michigan Department of Dance, and Audiovisual Materials.

Genealogical Papers and Miscellaneous Family Records

Genealogical Papers and Miscellaneous Family Records is primarily composed of genealogical records (including records dating to the first U.S. Census), biographical sketches, obituaries, personal papers, and financial records (including property records and records pertaining to family businesses). The first subseries (Early Genealogical Records) is predominantly comprised of the records of family members who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries and includes material about their settlement in the Michigan Territory. The four subsequent subseries pertain to various family branches (Parker, Smith, Parker-Hicks, and Winegar). The Parker Family subseries contains genealogical and financial records and correspondence for members of the Parker family, including Danford Parker, a Civil War veteran. The Smith Family subseries contains genealogical, biographical, and financial records of Smith family members, including the teaching materials of Mandana Hill Smith, a strong supporter of women's suffrage and the first woman to register to vote in Howell Township. It also includes records for Nathan Smith, a prominent florist and the oldest continuous resident of the state of Michigan at the time of his death. The Parker-Hicks subseries contains the genealogical and biographical records of Lois V. Parker Hicks, a 1918 graduate of the University of Michigan, and her husband W. J. Bryan Hicks, a World War I veteran. The final subseries (Winegar Family) contains genealogical and biographical records, records of family businesses (including the Winegar Furniture Co.), and family correspondence. An additional subseries contains digital scans of family photographs of members of the Hicks, Parker, and Smith families.

The General Administrative Records series (9.8 linear feet, 1 oversize box, 2 tubes, 2 oversize folders, and 651 MB) includes central administrative materials from the Zingerman's Community of Businesses. The series contains strategic planning documents about the development of the Community of Businesses model and a copy of the Zingerman's 2020 plan, a vision for the company in the year 2020. Other materials include employee handbooks and training documents, newsletters, and a selection of advertisements and clippings.

The series also contains visual materials including photographs of Zingerman's locations, employees, and events. The series also features a selection of graphic designs used in Zingerman's advertising and architectural drawings of Zingerman's Cornman Farms and Zingerman's Roadhouse.

The Motors Liquidation Company was the company left to settle past liability claims from the government-endorsed General Motors Chapter 11 reorganization which sold the assets of automobile manufacturer General Motors and some of its subsidiaries to NGMCO, Inc. ("New GM"). The collection includes archived websites of the Motors Liquidation Company, containing court documents and a claims register.

Motors Liquidation Company bankruptcy website is evidence of the automotive industry crisis of 2008-2010, caused in part by the confluence of the global financial turndown of the late-2000s recession, record oil prices, a severe global automotive sales decline due to the global financial crisis of 2008--2009. This collection of archived websites contains court documents and a claims register for the company left to settle past liability claims from General Motors Chapter 11 reorganization, and is arranged in a single series, Archived Websites.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, Landscape architect, speaker and lobbyist on behalf of conservation and beautification, president of the Michigan Parks Association, and member of the Citizens' Advisory Committee on Recreation and Natural Beauty during the Johnson Administration. Correspondence, reports, oral history interviews, and other materials concerning her interest in state and national conservation legislation; and photographs.

The Genevieve Gillette collection documents Gillette's concern for the development of Michigan's parks and outdoor recreation opportunities, and her work to promote scenic roads in Michigan and nationwide.

Among the issues most fully documented are the fight to establish and develop Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, acquisition and development of Sylvania Recreation Area and McCormick Experimental Forest, threats to wilderness in the Porcupine Mountains State Park, the controversy over the proposed Mill Creek Metropark, the financing of Michigan's state park system, especially the 1968 campaign to approve recreation bonds, and the development of the Rouge River floodplain near the University of Michigan--Dearborn.

The work of the Citizens' Advisory Committee on Recreation & Natural Beauty (1966-1968), the Michigan Parks Association (1959-1975), and the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission and predecessor organizations (1960-1974) are also documented.

The collection includes very little documentation of Gillette's professional work as a landscape architect, and includes almost nothing relating to her parks and recreation work before the late 1950s.

Soldier from Holland, Mich., member of Co. I, 339th U.S. Infantry who served in the Allied intervention in Russia, 1918-1920, the "Polar Bear Expedition." Collection includes diary, 1918-1919; and papers, 1940-1945, of the Howard H. Pellegram Post No. 3734 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars concerning the men and activities of the Polar Bear Expedition.

The papers include Albers' safe conduct from the Bolsheviks and his passport to the United States as well as a typescript diary, May 1918-July 1919, apparently that of Fred Kooyers, of Co. E, 339th Infantry, which includes descriptions of fighting at Kodish, Dec. 1918-Jan. 1919, and at Malie Ozerki, March 1919. Also included are newspaper clippings and papers relating to the Captain Howard H. Pellegrom Post No. 3734, Veterans of Foreign Wars, dated 1938-1945.

Marion P. Blydenburgh lived in China from 1920-1931 with her husband, George T. Blydenburgh, who was the superintendent of the Nanchang General Hospital (also known as the Susan Toy Ensign Memorial Hospital) in Jiangxi Province through the Board of Foreign Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This collection contains correspondence written to family members in the United States describing daily life, family matters, and news of the hospital's progress as well as photographs, newspaper clippings, and glass lantern slides documenting the Blydenburgh family's experiences.

First-hand accounts from George Blydenburgh, Marion Blydenburgh, and others of incidents related to military campaigns in Nanjing, Shanghai, and Nanchang are among materials in this collection. Also included are annual reports from the Nanchang General Hospital, publications from the Nanking [Nanjing] Language School, as well as scrolls of woodblock prints, calligraphy, and painting. Native of Milan, Michigan who served with the 131st Field Artillery unit during World War II and spent three and a half years as a Japanese Prisoner of War forced to work on the Burma Railroad. Correspondence, clippings, photographs, military records, scrapbooks, digital materials.

Materials include correspondence, clippings, maps, records related to Falk's military service and photographs. The series also contains information related to the Lost Battalion Association and efforts to document the experiences of American POWs following the war.

The collection has been organized into two series. The Scrapbooks series contains 4 binders of correspondence, clippings and photographs. The Memorial Book series contains a memorial scrapbook created by Falk's family after his death to honor his life and memory. The collection includes both a print version of the book, as well as digital copies of each page of the book.

This collection contains sketches, manuscripts, printed music and writings by George Cacioppo, American composer, founder of the ONCE group, and faculty member at the University of Michigan.

The collection contains sketches, manuscripts, printed music and writings by George Cacioppo, as well as correspondence (business and family), press clippings, programs and ONCE Festival memorabilia. The materials were arranged in logical sequence rather than "original order" so that research and performance of the materials would be facilitated. Details of the series arrangement have been provided below. Books and music by others have been removed from the collection, but lists of these materials have been retained. Many of Cacioppo's manuscripts were reproduced in different ways. The term "reproductions" was used in the finding aid to refer to ozalid copies and photocopies. Duplicates of the reproductions were removed.

George D. Converse papers, 1864-1865

Ten letters written while he was serving in Company D, 9th Michigan Infantry, September 1864-June 1865, Most of the letters are written from Chattanooga. He tells of cutting logs to build shanties; of voting in the regiment (with 500 out of 506 votes cast for Lincoln); and of drilling new recruits. He likes soldiering in fair weather, but five men in a small cloth tent on rainy days have to keep jokes going to be happy. The camp on the banks of the Tennessee River was a pleasant place for watching steamboats and trains. On November 18 he went on detached service guarding prisoners. One prisoner was shot for disobeying orders, but he himself had no trouble with the about 200 prisoners in the camp. In January he remarked that "full rations is something I have not seen since I have been down here." Though costly, they sometimes bought butter, cheese, cakes, pies, and sometimes were given soft bread instead of hard tack. He tells of a Negro regiment doing picket duty for a white regiment. He hopes some of the men back home get caught in the draft soon to take place. The weather is cold with rain and snow, but the boys are well. In February he and a friend built a shanty with a bed and a fireplace. They took turns getting dinner-eggs, sausages, meat, bread, butter, coffee. Ninety new recruits arrived in camp. They had a great time February 20th when guns were fired. "Then all the locomotives and steamboats and mills and furnaces and everything that could make a noise set up a whistle for about 10 minutes. There was quite a howl in the city of Chattanooga." In April they were in Nashville. They had news of Lee's surrender, and there was "tall canonading to celebrate."

George H. Forsyth papers, 1912-2015 (majority within 1920-1999)

George H. Forsyth (1901-1991) was an eminent archeologist, architectural, and art historian who led archeological expeditions to Angers, France, Mount Sinai, Egypt, and countries in the Near East including Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Forsyth was a professor at the University of Michigan, chairman of the History of Art Department and director of the Kelsey Museum. Ilene H. Forsyth, who continued George's publishing activities posthumously, was an art historian and professor at the University of Michigan. The collection is comprised of personal materials, teaching materials, and extensive documentation of George's personal travel and archeological expeditions to Europe and the Near East such as correspondence, field notes, and visual materials.

The George H. Forsyth papers document Forsyth's career. The collection includes personal materials, biographical information, daybooks, family photographs, teaching and lecture notes, and extensive documentation of George's personal travel and archeological expeditions to Europe and the Near East. Material related to expeditions includes field notebooks, photographs, negatives, architectural drawings, correspondence, and manuscripts of various publication activities.

George Forsyth died prior to completing the publication of his landmark drawings of Saint Catherine's Monastery (Mount Sinai, Egypt). Publication efforts were continued posthumously by his wife, Dr. Ilene H. Forsyth, an art historian and professor at the University of Michigan. Her extensive efforts to publish George's work are documented is approximately three linear feet of manuscripts, correspondence, topical files, and a catalog of drawings, 1995-1997, located in Box 9.

Professor of geography at the University of Michigan. Series include correspondence, subject files, professional societies, geography courses, reprints, manuscripts, notes as a student, and photographs; files relate to his professional interests and to the subject of geography.

The George Kish papers are divided into eight series: Correspondence, Subject Folders, Professional Societies, Geography Courses, Reprints, Manuscripts, Notes as a Student, and Photographs. These eight sections correspond, more or less, to the order that Kish maintained for his own files. The collection documents the academic career of Kish, from his Paris days as a student and his years at the U-M as a professor to his retirement and beyond. The collection's focus is not strictly on the university, as it also reflects Kish's prolific writings and his work in professional societies.

George Lincoln Rockwell was the founder and leader of the American Nazi Party. This sound recording is from a speech he gave at Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan in 1964. Everett M. Dirksen was a member of Congress from Illinois. The sound recording also includes a speech he gave on the state of union.

The George Lincoln Rockwell sound recording consists of a single tape reel. The recording consists of a speech George Lincoln Rockwell gave at Hill Auditorium on October 13, 1964. Rockwell's appearance was part of a speakers program sponsored by the Special Projects Committee of the Michigan Union. It stirred considerable controversy on campus on the nature of the American Nazi Party, the limits of academic freedom, and the role of the university in society.

The recording also includes a 1964 speech from Illinois Senator Everett M. Dirksen on the State of Union.

The papers of George Romney document the many faceted career of an automobile executive, governor of Michigan, candidate for President, cabinet officer, and activist on behalf of volunteerism. In this electronic version of the finding aid to the Romney papers, there are six subgroups of materials. These are Gubernatorial Papers covering the period of 1962 to 1969, Pre-gubernatorial Papers covering the period before taking office in 1963, Post-gubernatorial Papers covering the period after 1968, records of Romney Associates (a group established during his bid for the presidency), Visual Materials covering mainly the period up to 1969, and Sound Recordings also covering up to 1969. The George Vargas papers present a look at the interests, work, and activities of artist and historian George Vargas. The material is dated from approximately 1933-2016 and includes topical files, artwork, and correspondence.

The strength of the collection is found in the numerous lectures written by Vargas, which reveal the depth of his research, the original artwork, and the broader view of multi-cultural and, particularly, Latino art activities in Michigan. Also of note are his extensive files of artists that were of interest to him as well as his own papers and publications.

Three diaries (1863-1865) written while he was serving in Company D, Sixth Michigan Cavalry, as quartermaster sergeant and later lieutenant. Most of his entries concern the weather, food, sickness, letters, camp life,and battles with brief references to Gettysburg, Opequon, and Appomattox Court House. A large portion of his time was spent in the Campbell General Hospital, Washington, D.C. On May 19, 1864 he mentions Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln's visit to the hospital. Barbour was a resident of Fenton, Mich. This collection also includes an 1863 diary of Barbour's brother Frank A. Barbour. Frank Barbour served in Company A, 5th Michigan Cavalry. He died July 10, 1863, from wounds received in action at Gettysburg. The diary contains Frank's description of the events leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, and George's account of his brother's last days.

News editor and vice president of Detroit, Michigan, radio station, WJR, moderator of radio program, "In Our Opinion". Correspondence, radio transcripts, scrapbooks, broadcast discs, and audio-tapes of discs; include material concerning career of Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg, the senatorial campaign of 1942 between Prentiss Brown and Homer Ferguson, and radio broadcasting in general.

The Cushing collection consists largely of sound recordings of a selection of the "In Our Opinion" radio program. There are also additional textual materials: clippings and other documents pertaining to the program and some transcriptions of particular programs.

The sound recordings of the "In Our Opinion" program were originally phonograph transmission discs. Nearly impossible to listen to because of their oversize format and the absence of appropriate players, the library applied for and received a grant in 1977 from the NHPRC to transfer a selection of the more than 600 discs onto reel-to-reel tapes. Many of the discs already showed signs of deterioration. The selection of what discs to preserve was based on the significance of the topics discussed and the importance of the interviewees. Among the guests were Senators Arthur Vandenberg and Homer Ferguson, automobile executive (later governor) George Romney, Congressman George Dondero, military historian General S.L.A. Marshall, political science Professor James K, Pollock, Governor Kim Sigler, Lowell Thomas, Thor Heyerdahl, Edward R. Murrow, and Episcopal Bishop Richard S. Emrich, among many others. Topics ranged from state and national politics, the impact of the war, foreign affairs, post-war re-conversion of the economy, and issues specific to Detroit and Michigan.

The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (formerly the School of Public Policy) developed out of various institutes at the University of Michigan including the Institute of Social and Public Administration the Institute of Public Administration, and the Institute of Public Policy Studies. The School provides courses and conducts research in areas of public administration and public policy issues. Records include administrative files, correspondence, topical files and some material on research projects.

The University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy record group documents the history and development of public policy studies at the University of Michigan. The records contain some information on the beginning of instruction in public administration in 1915 and the formation of the Institute of Social and Public Administration in 1936. The bulk of the material documents the administration and subsequent reorganizations of the academic unit currently known as the School of Public Policy. Records include correspondence, minutes, historical materials and topical files concerning the Institute, its Lansing Office, its programs in the Republic of China and documented the Philippine Islands, and the Michigan Constitutional Convention of 1961- 1962. the records have been received in three major accessions, 1972 (boxed 1-9), 1997 (boxes 10-14) and 2006 (boxes 15-18).

Most of the materials comprising the 1972 accession cover the period from the 1950s to the mid-1980s. Unfortunately, few documents about the establishment and development of the public policy studies curriculum between 1915 and 1945 exist. Particular strengths of the record group are the materials on the Philippine Institute of Public Administration and the Taiwan Center for Public and Business Administration Education. The German Training Program files also offer insight into international interests of the public administration faculty at the University of Michigan. The German Training Program was a program established to provide Germans with a knowledge of American political and social institutions, democratic skills, and development of individual competence in fields of knowledge such as journalism, pedagogy, and public administration. Other series in the School of Public Policy records allow for a general overview of the structure of the School of Public Policy. They also demonstrate the composition and research interests of the faculty and students in the department.

The records comprising the 1997 accession from the School of Public Policy were primarily arranged chronologically. This arrangement has been retained and the record group has been broken down into a Chronological Files series, several Topical Files series, a Sound Recordings Series, and a Photographs series. It should be noted that some of the files in the Topical Files series include documents created after the dates noted in the series heading.

The 2006 accession consisted of additional administrative files and material relating to the dedication of the Joan and Sanford Weil Hall groundbreaking and dedication.

Governor of Michigan 1949 to 1960, under-secretary of state for African Affairs from 1961 to 1965, and Michigan Supreme Court justice from 1970 to 1986 and leader in state and national Democratic Party. Papers document his public career and aspects of his personal and family life and include correspondence, subject files, staff files, speeches, press releases and news clippings, photographs, sound recordings, films and videotapes.

The G. Mennen Williams Papers consist of official and personal files arranged into six subgroups: 1) Gubernatorial papers, 1949-1960 (681 linear ft.); 2) Non-gubernatorial papers, 1883-1948 and 1958-1988 (107 linear ft.); 3) Visual materials, ca. 1911-1988 (ca. 25 linear ft.); 4) sound recordings, 1950-ca. 1988 (5 linear ft.) Scrapbooks, 1948-1987 (43 vols.) and State Department Microfilm, 1961-1966 (23 reels).

As part of its own control system, the governor's office maintained a card index to the correspondents in many of the subgroups and series within the gubernatorial papers. This card file is located in the library's reading room. In addition, Nancy Williams and her staff compiled an extensive and detailed run of scrapbooks covering the Williams years. There is a separate inventory to these scrapbooks in a separately bound volume.

Strategy for Use of the Gubernatorial Papers: Although the Williams gubernatorial collection consists of hundreds of linear feet of material, the file arrangement created by the governor's staff is a fairly simple one to understand and to use.

The bulk of the collection falls within specific functional groupings, corresponding to the various activities and responsibilities that Williams performed as governor. Thus, if the researcher is uncertain of what portions of the collection might be relevant to his/her research, he/she is advised to think in terms of gubernatorial function. Does the proposed research concern the workings or area responsibility of a state board? If so, the Boards and Commissions series would be the most likely place in which to find material. The election of 1954? Then Democratic Party/Campaign Papers should be first choice. The passage of a specific piece of legislation? Here, Legislative Files is an obvious choice. The possible choices (called subgroups and series) that the researcher has are listed in the Organization of the Collection section. A description of the contents of each of these subgroups/series is provided below.

If, at first, unsuccessful in finding material on any given topic, the researcher might consider these additional strategies:

1. Refer to the Williams card index (located in the library's reading room). Sometimes, the name of an individual associated with a subject provides the easiest point of access into the collection. This file is arranged alphabetically and lists the dates of letters between an individual and the governor's office. This file only indexes the larger series and subgroups in the collection. It does not index the staff files, or parts of the Democratic Party/Campaign subgroup. Nevertheless it is an invaluable tool, and can uncover important material otherwise buried.

2. Refer to the various series of staff papers. Staff members were often closely involved in a specific subject areas (Jordan Popkin and aging, for example) and thus their files are frequently rich in source material.

3. If only partially successful in locating desired material, the researcher should think of an alternative subgroup or series. The governor's office, for a variety of reasons, often filed related material in different locations depending upon the source of a document. Thus, information relating to a strike might be filed both under the Labor Mediation Board in Boards and Commissions, and Strikes in General Subjects. Furthermore, if the strike influenced a specific piece of legislation, there could be material in the Legislative Files.

Grant K. Goodman was a student at the University of Michigan's Army Intensive Japanese Language School (AIJLS) during World War II. Goodman was the primary organizer of several AIJLS class reunions in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The collection contains papers documenting the AIJLS, specifically the Second Class, 1943-1944. It includes educational materials, reports, and commencement programs, as well as materials from the School's 1943 production of the musical "Nips in the Bud." A significant portion of the collection is made up of photographs, depicting life at AIJLS, Fort McClellan, Alabama, and in post-surrender Japan. There is a diary concerning his year as a musician in which he notes the weather, the days when they played for dress parade and guard mounting, and an occasional serenade for someone such as General Pope. He comments on camp duties, food, a trip down the river, some hospital duties, saying, "This hospital business I detest ... wish I was back in the regiment," his own bout with dysentery; and his wanting to go home. "I'm sick of soldiering. Wish I was out ... but what's the good of wishing."

In the 4th Infantry, he wrote some thirty letters to his sister. He describes quarters, their moves from camp to camp from Huntsville, Ala. to San Antonio, Texas, and caring for the sick and wounded. There is much chit-chat about home folks and affairs; his occasional dinners out with Southern families in which there are young ladies, with perhaps a musical evening to follow; church services; and Christmas southern style.

The diary, which supplements these letters, also tells of social calls, dances, a fox hunt, card games, church services, rides into the country on his horse, drinking among the men, and horse racing in their camp in San Antonio in which his horse is entered. The drinking water is bad, and he is often sick with diarrhea. Mosquitoes bother both men and horses. He comments on food or the lack of it and on camp gardens. He thought some of setting up a medical practice in San Antonio, but instead returned to school.

The records of Guild House have come to the library in different accessions dating from the 1970s. Covering the period from the 1920s to the 2000s, the records document the different roots of the modern Guild House. Besides correspondence, financial reports and annual reports, the record group includes the student newsletter The Microphone, as well as various reports of retreats, banquets, luncheons, and discussion sessions.

Because the members of the Guild House were so active, the record group includes materials on social issues such as civil rights, disarmament, diplomatic recognition of China, apartheid, and social and political issues in Central America. For a view of the Vietnam War peace movement and other political issues the collection of J. Edgar Edwards, director and campus minister of the Guild House from 1957 to 1973, should be consulted. This collection has been separately cataloged.

There are also numerous sound tape recordings of Guild House programs and meetings, a microfilm copy of the record book of the Upper Room membership under H.L. Pickerill's predecessor Thomas Iden, photographs, and scrapbooks.

The Gunnar Birkerts Collection offers researchers the opportunity to study the personal, professional and faculty papers and conceptual sketches of one of the masters of American modern architecture, whose career spans the second half of the twentieth century. The Gunnar Birkerts Collection is the architect's deeply personal legacy. He recognizes that, while some of his buildings may be demolished over time, his original conceptual designs on paper are conserved here for future generations to study and enjoy. To this end, he has endowed the Gunnar Birkerts Collection to ensure that his drawings will be preserved and that his place in architectural history can be studied and understood.

The Harlan Hatcher collection has been divided into two subgroups of files: those which were created or accumulated from his tenure as president of the University of Michigan (1951-1967) and those materials (mainly personal) dated either prior to or subsequent to Hatcher's presidential years.

The library, as archives of the University of Michigan, is the repository for all of the files of its presidents. For historic reasons, all of the papers of presidents up to and including Harlan Hatcher have been treated as personal collections and cataloged under the name of the president. Beginning with Hatcher's successor - Robben Fleming - and continuing to the present, the files of individuals occupying the president's office have been considered both personal and institutional. Records created from an individual's responsibility as president, usually materials from the years when he was president, are treated as office files and have been cataloged as part of the University of Michigan President's Office record group. Materials from either before or after an individual's tenure as president have been treated separately and have been cataloged under that president's name.

The Harry B. Welliver sound recording collection includes sound tape reels and sound discs and has been organized by these formats. The recordings capture folk songs and stories from the Michigan Upper Peninsula recorded by Welliver and Alan Lomax between 1948 and 1949. They provide insight into the culture and prominent lumbering industry of northern Michigan. Supplemental materials include data sheets about the recording sessions as well as one cassette tape. The collection traces Harvey Ovshinsky's personal and professional development as a writer, journalist, news broadcaster, radio host, television producer, creative consultant, and teacher. The Personal files include autobiographical writings providing insights into the events in Ovshinsky's childhood and adolescence that led to his early interest in writing and journalism. The Professional files contain the first issues of The Fifth Estate, and extensive memorabilia and press coverage on various radio stations and video and television production companies where Ovshinsky was employed. This series encompasses material on the history of Detroit's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. The Project files also include topical files on Detroit culture and history, which inspired many of Ovshinsky's documentaries and creative writing.

Materials from Ovshinsky's teaching career and transcripts from his speaking engagements in the Professional files reveal his approach to teaching writing, while drafts for films, stories, and television series in the Project files offer a view into Ovshinsky's creative process. Files named "War Dances" appear throughout both the Professional files and the Project files series. "War Dances" were an integral part of Ovshinsky's approach to both problem solving and the creative process. "War Dances" were personal notes and reflections in which Ovshinsky assessed his present situation, identified his goals and imagined paths to the solution of a problem or to the final stages of a project. The Henry Chandler Cowles photograph collection is comprised primarily of lantern slides. As a botany professor at the University of Chicago, Cowles led several field trips to observe ecological environments during the years from 1898 to 1934. The lantern slides in this collection cover the geographic areas of Michigan, Colorado, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Illinois and include photographic subjects such as dunes, plant life, forests, landscapes, and class group pictures.

The Henry Chandler Cowles photograph collection is comprised primarily of glass lantern slides from Cowles's ecology trips covering the years 1898 to 1936 with the majority being unmarked or falling between the years 1900-1912. Captions affixed to the plates are noted when available along with any numbering. Some of the handwriting is difficult to make out as are the Latin names of the plants but every attempt at correct spelling has been made. The collection is divided into seven series: Michigan Photographs, Colorado Photographs, Illinois Photographs, Indiana Photographs, Wisconsin Photographs, Miscellaneous Photographs, and Indiana Transparencies. Each state has subseries of General -- which indicates a many single location photographs -- and subseries of cities for which a group of photographs exists.

Methodist clergyman, pastor of the Centre Methodist Church in Malden, Massachusetts, the Elm Park Methodist Church in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Central Methodist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Correspondence, 1938-1958, subject reference file, ca. 1902-1966, name reference file, 1938-1958, sermon file, 1925-1958, scrapbooks, 1928-1958, church bulletins and newsletters from church at which Crane pastored, sound tape recordings of messages preached by Crane, and visual materials consisting of photographs and motion picture film. The Crane papers document an interest in, and activities with, various liberal and progressive organizations, and his association and friendship with other clergy and individuals with similar pacifist and activist backgrounds.

The files of clergy are often narrow in scope encompassing only the activities of an individual within the setting of his/her own church. Henry Hitt Crane was more than the pastor of Central Methodist Church in Detroit. He was a nationally known speaker, eloquent in his advocacy of pacifism and civil rights. The Crane collection reflects the scope of his activities both within the churches he pastored, within the city of Detroit as an influential church leader, and nationally within larger Methodist circles and among other advocates of liberal causes similar to his own. Through his correspondence, articles, and published messages, we see Crane as representative of that class of nationally known clergymen, respected for their opinions, champion of progressive causes, and willing participants in the often contentious debates that followed World War I on matters of morality, politics, and social justice.

The Crane papers, with some exceptions, cover the period when Henry Hitt Crane first entered the ministry during the years of World War I and continuing past his retirement, until approximately 1964. There is decidedly less material from the years before his coming to Central Methodist Church in 1938; by far the largest bulk of documents date from 1938 to 1958 when Crane pastored this metropolitan church. The exceptions to the basic span dates of 1917 to 1958 are files collected by Crane of sermons, published pamphlets, and other materials of his father and uncle, also Methodist clergymen. There are also materials that date after 1958, mainly copies of messages received from other clergy with some correspondence.

The Crane papers have been maintained in the order as created by Crane and his secretarial staff at Central Methodist Church. The series in the collection are Correspondence, Subject Reference Files, Name Files, Sermon Files, Scrapbooks, Church Bulletins and Newsletters, Visual Materials, and Retirement Files.

Henry Stewart Dean papers, 1862-1916

The collection includes two diaries, for 1864 and 1865. In the 1864 diary, Dean tells of directing and supervising men in erecting and operating sawmills and building storehouses, hospitals, bridges, etc. around Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga. He also writes of the move from there to the siege of Atlanta and the occupation of Atlanta; of deserters, prisoners, destruction of railroads, regimental inspections, and camp life in general; and of the return march to Chattanooga in six and one-half days. The 1865 diary (Jan.-June), kept while he was in Chattanooga, tells about the weather, building barracks, duties, social activities, the surrender of Lee, death of Lincoln, and mustering out. Also includes miscellaneous citations, commissions, legal documents relating to his military service and his work as regent, and a statement (notarized by Dean) of Victor C. Vaughan pertaining to the Douglas-Rose dispute, 1878.

Herbert C. Youtie was a research professor of Papyrology and associate professor of Greek at the University of Michigan. Louise C. Youtie was a scholar of Greek and Papyrology. The Youties' expertise in the field of papyrology was internationally renowned. Their papers document their work transcribing, studying, and interpreting script found in papyri and ostraka. Materials include correspondence, publication drafts, research paperwork, and photographs of papyri.

The Herbert C. Youtie series, 1932 -- 1979 (5 linear feet) documents his work transcribing, studying, and interpreting ancient Greek & Coptic script found in papyri and ostraka. The contents of this series also contain paperwork with his research, writing, and correspondence. Materials include photograph prints of papyri which he used for his work. Also found here are his professional correspondence, publication drafts, commentaries, final copies, and transcripts. The content is divided into four sub-series: Papyri, Writings and Publications, Correspondence, and Transcriptions and Notes. The arrangement of materials, as they were received from the University of Michigan Papyrology Collection, has been retained.

University of Michigan faculty group interested in the history of the university. Sound recordings and videotapes of interviews with former University of Michigan faculty, regents, administrators, and other interested individuals about the history of the university.

The materials in the Historica Critica collection are arranged first according to the medium on which the interview is preserved: Reel-to-Reel Audiotapes, Cassette Audiotapes, and Videotapes. Within each medium, the materials are in alphabetical order according to the subject of the interview. Some of the reel-to-reel audiotapes have more than one interview subject; these are arranged alphabetically according to the primary subject. It appears that the interviewers transferred the materials on reel-to-reel audiotapes directly to cassettes in several cases. This facilitates the arrangement of the cassettes into alphabetical order according to subject. The dates listed in the finding aid are the dates of the interview. Summaries of the interviews, prepared by Virginia Harris, are found in Box 1.

The History series contains data compiled by members of the Beth Israel Congregation from 1948 until 2016. This includes historical data on the congregation, its founders and note-able members including Osias Zwerdling and Thomas Cook. This series also contains data on the congregation's current and previous locations, Building Committee records, certificates, resolutions, social issues, data on the first Jewish cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Beth Israel Memorial Garden. This series also contains publications highlighting the congregation's membership, programs, and affiliations throughout the years, as well as images of some of the founding members, building locations, and dedication ceremonies, and other events. Located within this series are color slides of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew as well as a digitized audio recording of Osias Zwerdling discusing the founding/history of the congregation.

The first series, History and Administrative Records (1 linear foot), contains early records of the fraternity, including an audio tape interview with one of the early members of the fraternity (J. Leon Langhorne) and a minute book (1909-1927). There are also records of the activities of the fraternity, including parties, workshops, and community service. Administrative and organizational records are contained in this group as well, including organizational charts, officers' reports, minutes of meetings, and several versions of the constitution and bylaws of the chapter. This series also contains two editions of a book by Charles H. Wesley, The History of Alpha Phi Alpha: A Development in College Life, which is a general history of Alpha Phi Alpha from 1906 to 1979. Several references to the Epsilon Chapter and the University of Michigan are made in the book, many of which have been marked.

Nuclear engineer Henry Jacob Gomberg was a faculty member at the University of Michigan from 1946 to 1961 as well as director of the Puerto Rico Nuclear Center. He later worked for nuclear engineering business in the private sector. The Gomberg collection mainly contains materials from his numerous professional ventures in the nuclear energy field. It includes correspondence, personal notes, photographs, publications, and reports.

The Henry J. The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies Announcements, Bulletins and Handbooks series consists of publications directly related to graduate school policies and procedures and includes information on degree program requirements and curriculum.

Academic degree program requirements are defined in what is called the university "bulletin" or general catalog. For example, program requirements outline how many credits and what subjects a student needs to complete in order to receive a degree in an academic program within a specific school or college. At the University of Michigan, the degree program requirements are positioned as a contract between the university and the student with regard to the definition and program requirements.

Included in this series are the Announcement (or Bulletin), Graduate Student Handbook and Information for Graduate Students. Some publications (or their successors) may no longer be available in print but are available on the school s website.

The records of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies document the administration of the school, its academic programs and research projects and fellowships funded by the school and outside sources. The records include Dean's Files, minutes of the Executive Board and Administrative Council, Academic Unit and Program Evaluation files, and grants administration records.

Records of the Graduate School have been received by the library in numerous accessions, some large others quite small. Some accessions represent continuations or complements to previously received materials. This finding attempts to intellectually integrate continuing or similar record series received in multiple accessions.

As of 2012, these digital accessions comprise two subseries within the Graduate School Executive Board and Administrative Council series and Program Evaluation series.

The Hospital Administration series (75.5 linear feet) contains the records of various directors of the University of Michigan Hospitals, as well as the executive boards and councils. This series is broken up into 8 subseries, each one focusing on a different administrator or committee. Included amongst the administrators are some of the directors, executive directors, associate directors, and assistant directors.

The Dalston, Jeptha W. subseries (1 linear foot) contains documentation from Dalston's time as the executive director of the hospital system, from 1975 to 1985. This subseries contains a volume of Dalston's correspondence. More records relating to Dalston can be found within the subseries of his successor, John Forsyth.

The Executive Director's Council subseries (4 linear feet) contain records from the Executive Director's Advisory Council, as well as the similar Executive Director's Council. Included within this subseries are mainly the meeting minutes of these administrative councils as well as other project files. This subseries contains records from 1980 to 1995 and is arranged chronologically.

The Forsyth, John subseries (29 linear feet) makes up a bulk of the Hospital Administration series. These materials contain records from Forsyth's time as the Executive Director of the Hospitals, between the years 1985 and 1996. This subseries documents the full range of activities in which hospital executives participated in the 1980s and 1990s, including affiliations, negations, and merger talks with other local hospitals as well as with the University of Michigan Medical School, relations with the state of Michigan, the development of a health maintenance organization (HMO), and financial and strategic planning for a major medical institution. Records relating to hospital departments contain some annual reports as well as full-scale reviews of the departmental programs. Some of the materials in this subseries also contain documentation of some of projects and actions performed by Forsyth's predecessor, Dalston.

The Haynes, Harley subseries (4 linear feet) consists of records relating to the actions of the Hospital Director (precursor to the role of executive director) from 1924 to 1945. This subseries is completely comprised of director's correspondence, which is arranged alphabetically by topic.

The Howe, Arlene subseries (3 linear feet) contains material from 1973 to 1978, in which she spent time as the Assistant Director of the Hospitals. Topical files are contained within the subseries, and are arranged alphabetically. They include information on the various projects that Howe took part in, many of them concerning the construction of some of the hospital buildings. There are also committee meeting minutes that Howe was involved with, documenting building renovations and space allocation.

The University Hospitals Executive Board (17.5 linear feet) subseries consist of materials from the Executive Board, along with related administrative committees including the Executives Council, Executive Staff, Board in Control, and Executive Board. The materials range from 1919 to 2011 and mostly made up of the minutes from these board meetings and executive directories.

The Warren, Larry subseries (11 linear feet) covers the years 1996 to 2006 during his time as the Executive Director of the Hospitals. Materials found in Warren's files date between 1988 and 2010. The subseries is primarily made up of Warren's Topical Files. Also included in the subseries are videotapes from the Executive Director's Forum as well as volumes of Warren's correspondence. The Strong, Douglas L. subseries (1 linear foot) contains bound correspondence for the years 2005-2010. Strong serverd as the Interim Director between 2006 and 2010.

The Zugich, John subseries (5 linear feet) consists of the topical files of the Associate Director of the Hospitals during the mid-1970s. Materials include records of hospital projects, including surveys and studies, which Zugich took part in. This subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Hugh Acton (1925-), the "Cowboy-Designer," was a furniture designer, specializing in mid-century modern furniture, and artist in Augusta, Mich. He is best-known for his 1973 Acton Stacker chair for American Seating, as well as for his 1954 Suspended Beam Bench. This collection includes a brief history of the designer through articles and resumes, with a primary focus on his designs--including photographs (with negatives, transparencies, and online), catalog information, sketches, and design boards for his various furniture designs.
