Richard L. Zurel is an archaeologist who has conducted research on Native Americans in Michigan. The Richard L. Zurel papers, 1914-2011, contain materials related to his work in the field of archaeology documenting Native American groups in Michigan, as well as materials related to his family history. The collection contains materials related to the Michigan Archaeological Society and the Aboriginal Research Club of Detroit.

The Richard L. Zurel papers, 1897-2011, contain research materials and photographs related to his archaeological work in Michigan, as well as printed materials and minutes of the Aboriginal Research Club of Detroit and of the Michigan Archaeological Society. Professional Papers

The Professional Papers series, 1956-2011, consists of materials relating to Zurel's work in the field of archaeology documenting Native American groups in Michigan, including the Chippewa, Potawatomi, and Odawa (Ottawa). The series contains school papers, field notes, survey reports, maps of archaeological digs, and photographs of artifacts and digs. One of the papers, "Birmingham School Board Site," was written by Zurel while in high school. Zurel's survey reports cover archaeological digs in Southeast Michigan, including the counties of Oakland, Washtenaw, Macomb, and Monroe. Visual materials include photographs taken at different archaeological sites and on Native American reservations in Michigan, as well as images of Native American artifacts.

The series also contains newsletters and minutes related to the Michigan Archaeological Society and the Aboriginal Research Club of Detroit.

Architectural drawings of the firm of Z.T. Gerganoff, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, (and predecessor firms of R.S. Gerganoff and S.T. Gerganoff). Drawings and specifications for various area churches, service stations and auto dealerships, the Washtenaw County Building, the Ypsi-Ann Building, and miscellaneous businesses and private residences.

The Z. T. Gerganoff records represent a small portion of the firms output. In 1983, the firm's offices at 206 N. Washington in Ypsilanti were sold, and its records offered to the Michigan Historical Collections. Many of the records had been scattered or destroyed over the years, due to the firm's need for space and its practice of returning records to clients after the completion of a job.

Of the records remaining in the office in July 1983, the Michigan Historical Collections accessioned architectural drawings and specifications relating to churches, service stations and auto dealerships, the Washtenaw County Building, Washtenaw Country Club clubhouse, and a few other buildings, along with miscellaneous renderings of residences, apartment buildings, and businesses. Left at the office to be destroyed were drawings of other county courthouses and schools. Drawings of many Ypsilanti buildings had been donated to the Ypsilanti Historical Museum, and drawings of Eastern Michigan University buildings had been turned over to the University.

This record group consists of architectural drawings for 56 of Gerganoff's projects and a smaller series of specifications for two projects. The architectural drawings series is composed of three subseries: churches; service stations and auto dealerships; and other buildings. Within each subseries, buildings are arranged by location and then chronologically (by job number), with undated and miscellaneous material at the end.

Jens Zorn was a professor of physics and administrator at the University of Michigan. This collection represents his teaching and work in the field of physics, including some of his research and active participation in the International Conference of Atomic Physics. Zorn’s papers also document his many roles in the university community, including activities in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; the University of Michigan Press; and the University Council.

The Jens Zorn Papers document his professional and academic activities. The collection has been divided into three series: Biographical Material, Physics, and University Activities.

The Chronological Files consist of folders arranged by year from 1929 to 2017. Materials found in these folders may contain founding documents, by-laws, correspondence, project files, board meeting agendas and minutes, financial statements, and conference files for the Owosso area, Zonta District, and the Zonta International Conference files.

Ann Arbor chapter of international women's professional and service organization. Administrative records, newsletters, yearly members booklets, correspondence, and other materials relating to club activities.

The records of the Zonta Club of Ann Arbor cover the period 1972 to 1990, though the bulk of the materials date since 1987. The record group largely concerns the official functions of the Club and the various events that it sponsored. The folders in the record group are arranged alphabetically, with the contents of folders either arranged chronologically or alphabetically.

The folders labeled Administrative, Board Meeting Agenda, Business and Social Meetings, and Treasurer's Reports contain organizational records of the club. Included with these files are such items as the president's conference report, the proposed budget for operations, the report of pledges and contributions, various committee reports, committee announcements, officers reports, and financial credits and disbursements. The Correspondence folder constitutes the largest portion of the collection. Included is correspondence with the Zonta International Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, with the state (District XV) office, and with other clubs in the area (Area III). Also included is correspondence with other service organizations that Zonta of Ann Arbor financially endorsed or worked with in charity functions.

The Published Meetings file contains a set of booklets which are produced annually with the following topics in each booklet: the Zonta Blessing, Zonta Code, Clubwomens Collect written by Mary Stewart, listing of former Club Presidents, Officers Board Members, Committees, yearly calendar, and roster of members. The Social and Educational file contains notices of upcoming charity, social events, educational seminars and regional and national conferences of Zonta International.

The collection consists of pamphlets of religious messages broadcast on John Zoller's America Back to God radio program. The collection is arranged alphabetically by title.

History, administrative and financial records, files of church organizations, publications, and papers of individual pastors; also record books (prior to 1875) of Frederick Schmid, formerly pastor of the Bethlehem Church, now Bethlehem United Church of Christ; and photographs.

The records of Zion Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor span the years 1875-1981. Those records in the collection which date before 1875 were kept by the Rev. Frederick Schmid probably when he was minister of the Bethlehem Church. These record books (in box 12) include two volumes of baptismal records, a family register, and a record book of marriages performed. These four volumes date from 1833 to approximately 1875 when Zion was established. The volumes are in German.

Except for these volumes, the records in the collection are of Zion Lutheran Church. Included are historical materials, administrative and financial records, records of church organizations, church bulletins and newsletters, membership records, and sermons and collected materials of the church's pastors. The earlier records of the church are usually in German.

Karl L. Zinn, a specialist in computer-assisted instruction, joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1963 as a research associate with the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Promoted to research scientist in 1969, Zinn was instrumental in establishing the MERIT computer network and developing CONFER, the first computer-based conferencing systems on campus. Papers document the development and utilization of CONFER and contain extensive examples of print-outs of conferences, particularly those relating to the use of computers in instruction. Topical files chronicle various technological issues, including the development of MERIT and early uses of computers in the classroom.

The series contains strategic planning documents about the development of the Community of Businesses model and a copy of the Zingerman's 2020 plan, a vision for the company in the year 2020. Other materials include employee handbooks and training documents, newsletters, and a selection of advertisements and clippings.

The series also contains visual materials including photographs of Zingerman's locations, employees, and events. The series also features a selection of graphic designs used in Zingerman's advertising and architectural drawings of Zingerman's Cornman Farms and Zingerman's Roadhouse.

Mayer Zald was a professor of social work, sociology and business administration at the University of Michigan from 1977 to 2001 when he retired. He continued to teach classes until 2012 and was the chair of the Sociology Department. The collection of his papers ranges from 1956-2012 (bulk 1980-2008) and includes biographical information, correspondence, and information about his contributions while working at the university. The majority of the collection is academic papers written by Zald.

The Biographical Information series contains annual activity reports that Zald filed, information on the committees he was involved in, nominations he received, personal information including resume and curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and documentation from his time as chair of the Sociology Department.

Township in eastern Washtenaw County, Michigan. The record group consists of a scattering of early nineteenth century Ypsilanti Township records, mainly in the period of 1827 to 1838. These include minutes of township meetings and of the highway commission, and assessment rolls. Another portion of the record group consists of records of individual school districts.

Ypsilanti, Michigan chapter of the Kiwanis Clubs. Historical information and club bylaws, monthly and annual reports, minutes of meetings, membership files, publications, scrapbook and clippings, and photographs.

The Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club Records are comprised of historical information and bylaws; monthly and annual reports which document the membership, activities and financial transactions of the organization; meeting minutes; membership information; Ypsilanti Kiwanis publications; scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The monthly reports cover the years 1957-1983, but there is a considerable gap for the early 1970s. Annual audit reports were compiled by the Club's budget committee and itemize the expenses and money raised by the Club through dues and fund raising. There are many gaps in the audit reports, which cover the period of the 1940s and 1950s. Several other annual reports are in the collection, such as the Club Achievement report, the Club report and an Activity Survey. The different titles and formats reflect the changing forms over the years. Unfortunately, these annual reports are very spotty, with only a few years' records being preserved. Club elections are recorded in the Annual Club Election file; there is again, however, a gap for the late 1960s and 1970s reports.

Minutes of the Club meetings document the weekly decisions and concerns of the organization between the founding in 1921 and 1986. The names and occupations of club members are located in the Club Roster files. Two newsletters are found in the publications series - the Kiwanis News and We are the Kiwanis of Ypsilanti. The scrapbook and photograph series reflect the community service activities of the Club.

The bulk of the information covers only the years 1965-1967 and provides minimal information from 1963 and 1964. Really the only materials that cover the earlier years of the organization are the scrapbooks.

The collection consists mainly of the papers of former president of the organization, Mrs. Clara Owens. Included are administrative records, photographs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and printed materials. Personal Records, Clara Owens, 1965-1966

The Personal Records, Clara Owens series includes some comparative information about other theaters, a list of staff and patrons, and Mrs. Owens' office papers which are composed of organizational bylaws, building plans, administrative notes to herself, and several narratives written to explain the mission of the Ypsilanti Greek Theater, its staff, and its long-term plans. Much of this latter material appears to have been for her own reference and is not meant to suggest a complete view of the workings of the organization. It does however give a very good idea of the intention and philosophy of the founding members of the organization.

The Ypsilanti Campaign for Equality (YCFE) organization was formed in about 2001 to contest a ballot proposal that would have removed sexual orientation protections from the Ypsilanti City Charter. This record group comprises the material they amassed during their campaign; it includes budgets, planning documents, literature, and press coverage.

The 2002 Campaign series comprises all those materials that were clearly connected to the campaign. It includes administrative materials, such as budgets and planning documents; literature distributed by the YCFE and its opposition; and press coverage published throughout the duration of the campaign. It also details the efforts of organizing and training campaign volunteers and includes documentation of supporters in the business and religious community.

The Youtz papers consist of notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China. Other papers include materials relating to his work with the War Production Board during World War II, his architectural projects and inventions, and photographs. Herbert C. Youtie was a research professor of Papyrology and associate professor of Greek at the University of Michigan. Louise C. Youtie was a scholar of Greek and Papyrology. The Youties' expertise in the field of papyrology was internationally renowned. Their papers document their work transcribing, studying, and interpreting script found in papyri and ostraka. Materials include correspondence, publication drafts, research paperwork, and photographs of papyri.

The Herbert C. Youtie series, 1932 -- 1979 (5 linear feet) documents his work transcribing, studying, and interpreting ancient Greek & Coptic script found in papyri and ostraka. The contents of this series also contain paperwork with his research, writing, and correspondence. Materials include photograph prints of papyri which he used for his work. Also found here are his professional correspondence, publication drafts, commentaries, final copies, and transcripts. The content is divided into four sub-series: Papyri, Writings and Publications, Correspondence, and Transcriptions and Notes. The arrangement of materials, as they were received from the University of Michigan Papyrology Collection, has been retained.

All but one of the films are in black and white. In addition, there are five photographs of the annual Camp Davis Summer session participants for the years 1929-1933. Collected materials regarding Word of God Community

The paper files (Collected materials regarding Word of God Community) have been arranged alphabetically by topic and include papers generated by the community itself or its members. Some of the files warrant special mention. As the Word of God community (at least during the period covered by these records) was governed by Coordinators, the Coordinator's notebooks are a valuable source of information regarding the workings of the community. These notebooks include meeting materials, decisions of the coordinators, and outlines and current policies adopted by the coordinators.

Another excellent source is the "Word of God Archives Documents Book." This volume of documents, now in file folders and numbered, was probably used by Roberta Keene in her thesis "Formal Organization and Charisma in a Catholic Pentecostal Community" (1974). Documents in these files include summary of meetings, planning documents, reports, various statements, and memoranda.

The Fall Conference files relate to the annual weekend gathering of the entire community. Its purpose is to allow the members to express their collective will. General Community Gatherings referred to in the files are prayer meetings held for the entire community. District Gatherings are prayer meetings of Word of God members living in a specific geographic area. Prophecies were generally given by Word of God members at prayer meetings. Within the community they were usually regarded as being divinely inspired. In recording these prophecies, Yoder relied upon the notes of others, his own notes, and audio tape recordings to reconstitute the prophecies.

Other files include the Word of God newsletter, Community Bulletin, files relating to the Community's relationship with churches and with associated groups, such as Catholic Charismatic Renewal and the Sword of the Spirit.

Branch of the YMCA; Annual reports, clippings, correspondence, financial records, minutes of meetings, photographs, press releases, published materials, rosters, and scrapbooks; also includes collected branch records for the Railroad branch, 1877-1890, and the Downtown branch, 1890-1909; and publication, Detroit Young Men, 1911-1922.

The records of the Metropolitan Offices of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit consist of annual reports, correspondence, financial materials, minutes (Secretary's records), photographs, published brochures and pamphlets, and scrapbooks. The materials document, somewhat unevenly, the efforts of the YMCA to tend to the spiritual, physical, and social needs of the young men in Detroit. The strengths of this record group are in its minutes (Secretary's records) and photographs, each of which provides detailed and telling insight into the development of Detroit and the YMCA from the nineteenth century to 2006. The scrapbooks created by the YMCA, 1936-1973, are also of interest in that they accurately reflect all newspaper coverage of YMCA events and activities for this decade.

The records have been arranged in four series: Administration, Secretary's Records, Visual Materials, and Scrapbooks.

This subseries consists of those materials pulled together by the general secretary, A.G. Studer, and the director of public relations, Russell Elliott. The records comprise eight linear inches and begin with Studer's published history of the Detroit YMCA. Other materials in this subseries are arranged alphabetically by type of record. The annual reports provide quick access to data on membership, programs, and financial operations.

Ann Arbor, Michigan photographer. Photographic images taken to accompany articles in the Ann Arbor Observer. Images include Ann Arbor businesses, buildings, neighborhoods, parks, landmarks; also photos of local personalities, politicians, business people, and University of Michigan faculty and staff members.

The Peter Yates collection is made up of approximately 5200 negative strips, or 26,000 images, of photographs taken for the Ann Arbor Observer between 1978 and 1990. The collection documents both the ordinary and the eccentric in Ann Arbor, as photographs of politicians, professors and business people are interspersed with images of local "characters" and unusual events. Neighborhoods, parks and buildings are also represented in the collection. The negatives are stored in chronological order, according to the date of the issue in which they appeared.

The index is arranged in alphabetical order by subject, and each entry includes the date of the Observer issue in which the photograph was published. The index is not comprehensive, but provides access to photographs of notable people, institutions and trends in Ann Arbor. For example, not every restaurant review photograph has been indexed, but "institutions" such as the Fleetwood Diner and the Gandy Dancer do appear on the list.

The Roger Irving Wykes papers are comprised of four series: Correspondence; Michigan Constitutional Convention, 1907-1908; Miscellaneous; and Litigation Case Files. Most of the correspondence relates to his campaign for delegate to the Constitutional Convention. The great bulk of the Litigation series relates to his participation in the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad Company Rate Case.

Researchers should be aware that several of the letters in this series are in Chinese. The "Chronological" subseries of letters focuses on the projects that Wu worked on for major corporations.

University of Michigan radio station, founded 1948. Administrative records documenting the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan; radio scripts, transcripts of talks given by faculty, publicity, scrapbooks, and photographs; and sound recordings of radio programs produced and broadcast by WUOM, as well as recordings of various University conferences, ceremonies, etc.

The records of radio station WUOM document the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan from the 1920s through the 1960s. The bulk of the material dating from the founding of the campus radio station WUOM in 1948. The records include administrative files; scripts, publicity material, course guides and other program related material; and recordings of select broadcasts. the WUOM records are organized into three subgroups: Paper Records (including visual materials), Audio Materials (sound recordings) and Printed Material. The content description and arrangement idiosyncrasies of each are presented below. Though the dates of the current accession continue only into the early 1980s, with the bulk of materials concentrated in the 1940s-1960s, WUOM is a continuing unit of the university, and future accessions are anticipated.

Paper Records, 1920s-1970s

At present, the paper records are divided between the administrative records of the station's first two administrators, and materials reflecting the broadcast activity of the station, such as radio scripts, correspondence, and other materials pertaining to program production. Because there was broadcast activity for more than twenty years prior to the establishment of WUOM, the records in a particular series, such as "Director's Files," are broken into "pre-WUOM" ©. 1920s-1947) or "WUOM" (1948 and beyond). Director's Files: Waldo Abbot (2.25 linear ft.). The records of Waldo Abbot, the university's first Director of Broadcasting, are a small but important source for tracing the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan and the establishment of a non-commercial, educational radio station. Because Abbot was also well-known as a leader in the field of educational broadcasting, his papers offer insight into the development of the industry and the leadership role played by the University of Michigan Broadcasting Service.

Susan P. Wright was a faculty member of the Residential College, where she directed the Science, Technology, and Society Program from 1979 to 1997. Additionally, she was a research scientist at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. These papers primarily document the debate over recombinant DNA at the University of Michigan in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The Susan Wright Papers document the recombinant DNA debate at the University of Michigan during the 1970s and early 1980s through material collected by Dr. Wright. In the early 1970s, scientists discovered a method to combine DNA from different organisms, creating DNA sequences not found in nature. This led to concern that, among other things, the organisms possessing this recombined DNA could escape from laboratories and cause pandemics. A debate over how much this new technology should be regulated by the government ensued. Wright was involved in this debate through her position as chair of the Residential College's Science, Technology, and Society Program. Administrative series documents the organizational structure and functions of the Workmen's Circle/Arbeter's Ring. African Methodist Episcopal pastor with churches in Albion and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Collection includes sermons, biographical materials, materials related to history of the church, scattered minutes of meetings, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

The John A. Woods papers measure 1.75 linear feet. The majority of the collection consists of sermons (1.5 linear feet). Because most of the sermons are undated, their original order has been retained. Other significant files concern Bethel AME Church. An audio cassette captures the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new church in 1971, and a program documents the Burn the Mortgage Celebration service in 1989. Also found in the collection are miscellaneous church meetings minutes, dated 1982 and 1987.

The Biographical Materials folder includes biographical information about Reverend Woods, as well as letters of recommendation and/or appreciation, and tributes. Of importance are old school records, pastoral certificates and the program from Reverend Wood's funeral service on November 14, 1989. The Newspaper Clippings folder also contains a wealth of biographical information about Reverend Woods. Photographs date from circa 1930 and include images of Reverend Woods from a young man onwards, and pictures of groundbreaking and the completed Bethel AME Church. The Services folder contains programs of various services that took place in different AME churches. Miscellaneous material includes printed religious texts and a heavily annotated 1979-80 DBC Student Directory.

Alpha File, 1941-1996

The Alpha File (1948-1996) series makes up the bulk of this collection. The local newsletter that they produced was mostly a tool for the group to promote their meetings, and lectures and to keep members updated on fund raising and the causes for which they were raising funds. The newsletters also provided members with information about how to contact their representatives in Washington, and how those representatives voted on issues that were important to the group. The collection documents the group's work on their community projects such as the Jane Addams Children's Book Award and UNICEF. The correspondence revolves mostly around the organization writing to officials at the United Nations and in the U.S. government, including Senator Philip Hart and former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.
