Background

Scope and Content:

The collection contains September 15, 1943 letter written by Fielding H. Yost attesting the citizenship of Mina May Young Welsh. The letter is notarized by Norma Bentley, Notary Public.

Biographical / Historical:

Minna May (Young) Welsh was born in 1886 and moved with her family to southern Illinois in 1892 due to the discovery of oil. Fielding Yost was superintendent of the school system in which Welsh attended at this time, and two became acquainted. During World War II Welsh was employed manufacturing airplanes and needed proof of citizenship and requested that Yost write a letter vouching for her.

Fielding H. Yost was born in Fairview, West Virginia on April 30, 1871. After graduating from West Virginia University in 1897, he accepted the position of football coach at Ohio Wesleyan University. He took similar positions at the University of Nebraska (1898), the University of Kansas (1899), and Stanford (1900). In 1901, he came to the University of Michigan serving as head football coach (1901-1923 and 1925-1927) and director of intercollegiate athletics from 1921 to 1941. Yost died August 20, 1946.
