Scope and Content:

The Woodruff family photograph collection includes modern copies of photographic portraits of Benjamin Woodruff and his wife, Freelove Sanford Woodruff.

Biographical / Historical:

The Woodruff family included Benjamin Woodruff (1744-1837), American Revolutionary War soldier, who wed Phebe (Pierson) Woodruff and, at another point in time, Patience (Lum) Woodruff (1751-unknown). One of Benjamin's and Patience's children was Benjamin Woodruff (1783-1874). The younger Benjamin Woodruff was born in Morristown, NJ. By 1803, he emigrated to Fayette in Seneca County, NY. He married Freelove (Sanford) Woodruff (1783-1867) of Massachusetts in circa 1807; they had several children. In 1830, he was elected State Assemblyman for Seneca County. Other positions held over the course of his life included town clerk, farmer, and Justice of the Peace.

In 1836, Benjamin Jr. and his parents relocated to Pittsfield Township, Michigan. The settled in the area known as Woodruff's Grove. This area later formed a key part of Ypsilanti, Mich.
