The C. L. Franklin collection is a small but significant accumulation of materials relating to the life and career of this Detroit-based clergyman. Although the collection dates from the mid-1950s, most of the materials fall within the period of 1963 to 1984. The collection is comprised of photocopies and copyprints of materials made available to the library by Erma Franklin. The importance of the collection is for the sampling of Franklin sermons that have been preserved, for the scattered documentation of the important March of Freedom that took place in Detroit in the summer of 1963, and for the copyprints made of photographs of Franklin, his family and his friends and professional associates. The collection has been arranged into five series: Biographical Information, Various Papers, Topical Files, Photographs, and Sound Recordings.

This collection includes materials accumulated by the CMU. Multicultural Academic Student Services (MASS), including: photograph albums, newspaper clippings, and video recordings of multicultural related events.

This collection, 1984-2018, and undated, in 3 cubic ft. (in 4 boxes, 2 oversized photograph albums) includes materials accumulated by the CMU. Multicultural Academic Student Services (MASS), including: photograph albums, newspaper clippings, and video recordings of multicultural related events. The collection is organized by format and chronologically.

Newspaper Clippings(copies) directly related to cultural events that had an effect on CMU student body, faculty, or surrounding community were retained. For example: Chippewa nickname controversy, Tomahawk chop, residence hall conflicts, Kosovo POWs, Indian tuition waiver, Basketball Coach Keith Drambrot, Women’s track Coach Ellen Carpenter, Speaker Sister Souljah, Affirmative Action exemption debate, Central 6, and the Noose controversy (2007).

This collection includes six photograph albums. The contents of four of these albums were removed from poor quality three-ring binders, placed in folders and boxed, while two oversized albums were left intact. Photographs in this collection cover many multicultural events and settings such as: Get Acquainted Day, Parent Empowerment through Academics and Knowledge (PEAK), Minority awards ceremonies, cultural performances, American Council on Education (ACE), Cultural workshops, candid office moments, Spring break, Hispanic Heritage Food Taster, Zumba classes, Martin Luther King Jr. events (Unity Ball, Unity March, Peace Brunch), Organization for Black Unity events, Iron Chef, Think Fast, Black History Month events, Asian culture events, Soup and Substance, Battle of the Bands, Powwow, multicultural office, and Graduation Ceremonies. Also, included are photographs of speakers that visited CMU such as Danny Glover, B.D. Wong, Judge Joe Brown, and Jaime Escalante.

Videotapes in this collection are on VHS format. Events covered by this footage include: Battle of the Bands, Cultural Explosion, Minority Student Services Awards ceremonies, Students of Color Leadership Conference, United Holiday Celebration, and NSEMP (later known as African-American Mentoring Program).

ACE Picture Perfect Student Services compact disc includes two audio files and two PowerPoint files. The PowerPoints exhibit multiple photographs in various settings and lists members of the program with accompanying portrait.

Eugene Ransom and Jeanne Bailey Ransom Papers, 1914-2001

Eugene Ransom was director of the Wesley Foundation at the University of Michigan (1951-1968). Jeanne Bailey Ransom was a teacher, writer, and family historian. The collection consists largely of binders of materials (photographs, clippings, and other memorabilia) relating to Eugene's service with the Civilian Public Service during World War II, to his work with the Wesley Foundation, and to the couples' involvement in issues of peace and justice. In addition, the collection includes collected genealogical materials and family documents pertaining to the Bailey family.

The Eugene Ransom and Eleanor Jeanne Bailey Ransom papers have been carefully arranged and maintained probably by Jeanne Ransom who had an interest in genealogy and family history. The collection consists largely of binders of materials (photographs, clippings, and other memorabilia) arranged chronologically. The binders either relate to Eugene or Jeanne alone or to their activities together. Of interest are those materials relating to Eugene's service with the Civilian Public Service during World War II, to his work with the Wesley Foundation, and to the couples' involvement in issues of peace and justice. The collection also includes autobiographical material, sermons, writings, scattered correspondence, and subject files. In addition, the collection documents the Bailey family with genealogical information and family documents. One of the letters in the collection is from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. declining a speaking invitation.

Governor of Michigan 1949 to 1960, under-secretary of state for African Affairs from 1961 to 1965, and Michigan Supreme Court justice from 1970 to 1986 and leader in state and national Democratic Party. Papers document his public career and aspects of his personal and family life and include correspondence, subject files, staff files, speeches, press releases and news clippings, photographs, sound recordings, films and videotapes.

The G. Mennen Williams Papers consist of official and personal files arranged into six subgroups: 1) Gubernatorial papers, 1949-1960 (681 linear ft.); 2) Non-gubernatorial papers, 1883-1948 and 1958-1988 (107 linear ft.); 3) Visual materials, ca. 1911-1988 (ca. 25 linear ft.); 4) sound recordings, 1950-ca. 1988 (5 linear ft.) Scrapbooks, 1948-1987 (43 vols.) and State Department Microfilm, 1961-1966 (23 reels).

As part of its own control system, the governor's office maintained a card index to the correspondents in many of the subgroups and series within the gubernatorial papers. This card file is located in the library's reading room. In addition, Nancy Williams and her staff compiled an extensive and detailed run of scrapbooks covering the Williams years. There is a separate inventory to these scrapbooks in a separately bound volume.

Strategy for Use of the Gubernatorial Papers: Although the Williams gubernatorial collection consists of hundreds of linear feet of material, the file arrangement created by the governor's staff is a fairly simple one to understand and to use.

The bulk of the collection falls within specific functional groupings, corresponding to the various activities and responsibilities that Williams performed as governor. Thus, if the researcher is uncertain of what portions of the collection might be relevant to his/her research, he/she is advised to think in terms of gubernatorial function. Does the proposed research concern the workings or area responsibility of a state board? If so, the Boards and Commissions series would be the most likely place in which to find material. The election of 1954? Then Democratic Party/Campaign Papers should be first choice. The passage of a specific piece of legislation? Here, Legislative Files is an obvious choice. The possible choices (called subgroups and series) that the researcher has are listed in the Organization of the Collection section. A description of the contents of each of these subgroups/series is provided below.

If, at first, unsuccessful in finding material on any given topic, the researcher might consider these additional strategies:

1. Refer to the Williams card index (located in the library's reading room). Sometimes, the name of an individual associated with a subject provides the easiest point of access into the collection. This file is arranged alphabetically and lists the dates of letters between an individual and the governor's office. This file only indexes the larger series and subgroups in the collection. It does not index the staff files, or parts of the Democratic Party/Campaign subgroup. Nevertheless it is an invaluable tool, and can uncover important material otherwise buried.

2. Refer to the various series of staff papers. Staff members were often closely involved in a specific subject areas (Jordan Popkin and aging, for example) and thus their files are frequently rich in source material.

3. If only partially successful in locating desired material, the researcher should think of an alternative subgroup or series. The governor's office, for a variety of reasons, often filed related material in different locations depending upon the source of a document. Thus, information relating to a strike might be filed both under the Labor Mediation Board in Boards and Commissions, and Strikes in General Subjects. Furthermore, if the strike influenced a specific piece of legislation, there could be material in the Legislative Files.

The Letty M. Wickliffe collection documents the life of a devoted educator, Ann Arbor community activist, and active member of the Republican party. The collection is divided into two series, Topical and Visual. Folders are arranged alphabetically within each series and the items inside the folders are in chronological order. Collections also includes Wickliffe's 1924 University of Michigan diploma.

University of Michigan radio station, founded 1948. Administrative records documenting the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan; radio scripts, transcripts of talks given by faculty, publicity, scrapbooks, and photographs; and sound recordings of radio programs produced and broadcast by WUOM, as well as recordings of various University conferences, ceremonies, etc.

The records of radio station WUOM document the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan from the 1920s through the 1960s. The bulk of the material dating from the founding of the campus radio station WUOM in 1948. The records include administrative files; scripts, publicity material, course guides and other program related material; and recordings of select broadcasts. the WUOM records are organized into three subgroups: Paper Records (including visual materials), Audio Materials (sound recordings) and Printed Material. The content description and arrangement idiosyncrasies of each are presented below. Though the dates of the current accession continue only into the early 1980s, with the bulk of materials concentrated in the 1940s-1960s, WUOM is a continuing unit of the university, and future accessions are anticipated.
