Papers of James Burrill Angell, the third President of the University of Michigan (1871-1909) and U.S. Minister to China (1871-1909) and Turkey (1897-1898). Includes correspondence, lectures and lecture notes, addresses and articles, subject files and personal materials, and photographs.

The Angell papers documents Angell's academic and diplomatic career. There is extensive material on all phases of University of Michigan business, particularly Angell's contacts with the state legislature, the board of regents, faculty relations, and the various schools, colleges, departments and divisions. Much of the correspondence and the Angell diaries relate to his diplomatic missions, higher education in the United States, and family matters.

Vice President for Research Cyberinfrastructure at the University of Michigan, dean of the School of Information, Interim Dean and Associate Dean for Research at the College of Engineering. Papers include materials relating to research in technologically-based collaboration, institutional leadership, teaching and service.

The Daniel E. Atkins papers document his research and administrative roes at the University of Michigan. The papers include materials relating to research in technologically-based collaboration, institutional leadership, teaching and service,including meetings and activities as Dean of the School of Information. The papers comprise 11.6 linear feet in three major series: University of Illinois, U-M College of Engineering, and U-M School of Information. In addition, there is a series of digital material related to Atkins' work on the U-M IT Council.

Lansing, Michigan businessman, founder of the Hudson Motor car Company, Secretary of Commerce in the Hoover Administration, leader of the "good roads movement" and the Lincoln Highway Association. Collection includes correspondence, speeches, business papers, clippings and scrapbooks and photographs.

The Roy D. Chapin papers include correspondence, speeches, articles, interviews, business papers, receipts, scrapbooks, photographs, and miscellaneous notes and files of Chapin's wife, and his biographer, John C. Long, concerning family matters, highway transportation, the automobile industry, general economic conditions, foreign trade, World War I, national defense, state and national politics, the Republican Party, and the University of Michigan. The collection also contains extensive papers concerning the Hudson Motor Car Company, including information on management policies, production, and labor organizing.

The records of the University of Michigan student section of the Society of Women Engineers cover the period from 1971 to 2011 and have been divided into three series: Society Records, Student Activities, and Audio-Visual.

The University of Michigan's highest governing body is the Board of Regents. The Regents deal with virtually every aspect of university policy and campus life. The records of the Regents reflect this broad range of interests and authority. This record group contains exhibits from meetings beginning in 1899. These exhibits are the most complete record of the actions of the Regents, supplementing and detailing the published minutes Proceedings of the Board of Regents. Additional documentation in this record group includes manuscript minutes, 1837-1870, correspondence, material by and about the Regents, photographs, audio recordings of meetings, 1977-2011, and material on recent presidential searches.

As the official governing body of the university, the Regents deal with virtually every aspect of university policy and life. The records of the Regents--which includes exhibits of Regents' meetings, topical files, correspondence files, audio and visual material, and archived web content--reflect this broad range of interests and authority. But while the documentation is wide-ranging, it is not continuous. Certain types of records are continually before the Regents, particularly information regarding salaries, leaves of absence, appointments to faculty positions, and formal approval of degrees conferred upon students. More often, however, the Regents are presented with a specific problem and asked to resolve it through the creation of policy. After the creation and successful implementation of a policy, the situation which caused the issue to arise is usually no longer a matter of Regental concern. The Regents' records reflect this pattern of action. Issues arise, are resolved, and then are supplanted by new concerns.

Records of the University of Michigan College of Engineering include histories, correspondence and topical files of deans; minutes of the executive and other committees; faculty records, including minutes of meetings and faculty biographies; miscellaneous student and alumni records; photographs, microfilm, digital files, and archived website.

The College of Engineering records date from 1860 to 2014 and measure 118.5 linear feet, 3 oversize folders, and 1,196 GB. The records document the internal activities of the College of Engineering, both administrative and academic, the role of the college as a unit of the University of Michigan, and research developments and trends over the years. Correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, financial records, and other material reflect changing research interests within the field of engineering as well as the curriculum development that has accompanied technological advances. Of particular interest are the files relating to outside work by faculty members, a question of enduring concern within the college. The records reflect the relations of the College of Engineering with private industry, especially through the documentation of funding from outside sources and the involvement of professors in outside research.

The College of Engineering Publications consist of printed and born-digital material produced by the College of Engineering and some of its academic departments, administrative units and student organizations. The College of Engineering Publications are divided into five series; Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, Topical Publications, Student Publications; and Chronologically Arranged Publications.

The Unit Publications series contains printed material published specifically by the College of Engineering. These publications are defined as being widely distributed and may be published at regular intervals. They are arranged by genre of the publication.

The Sub-Unit Publications series contains publications from subordinate offices, departments, programs, laboratories and organizations within the College of Engineering. These publications are arranged alphabetically by the creating sub-unit.

The Topical Publications series includes publications which document specific events or activities such as anniversary celebrations, convocations, faculty awards or memorials, graduation exercises, or one-time conferences hosted by the College of Engineering.

The Student Publications series contains publications published by student groups within the College of Engineering. The specific student organizations are arranged alphabetically by name of the organization.

To expedite access to the College of Engineering publications, all materials received after 2017 are added to the collection in chronological order by the year of publication within the Chronologically Arranged Publications series. The series contains Unit, Sub-Unit, Topical, and Student publications.

Some publications (or their successors) may no longer be available in print but are available on the school's website, www.engin.umich.edu.

Division of the Institute of Science and Technology primarily established to provide a link between higher technology research at the University of Michigan and private industries in the State of Michigan. Transferred into the School of Business Administration and the College of Engineering's Office of Technology Transfer in the late 1980s. The record group documents the administration, history, and projects of the Industrial Development Division and includes five series: Administrative File, Historical File, Projects, Public Relations, and Reports.

The records of the Industrial Development Division measure two linear feet and range from 1960 to 1991. These materials provide particularly good documentation of some of the programs and projects run through this unit. The record group is divided into five series: Administrative File, Historical File, Projects, Public Relations, and Reports, and Publications.

Unit of the Office of Budget and Planning, established in 1974 for purpose of conducting research on academic administration at University of Michigan and coordinating evaluation and planning activities of the VPAA and units under its jurisdiction. Successor of the Office of Institutional Research, Office of Academic Analysis and Planning. Primarily records of the Evaluation and Planning Project, 1974-1979, a study of all academic and academically related units under the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Includes correspondence, grant reports, evaluations of academic units, and planning documents. Also miscellaneous college and school accreditation reports.

The records of the Office of Budget and Planning document the activities of the office from 1970 to 1982. This period includes the transition of the office from the Office of Institutional Research to the Office of Academic Planning and Analysis (renamed Office of Budget and Planning in 1997) and the concurrent shift of core office activities from data collection to planning and analysis. One such analysis and planning activity that is well documented in the records is the Evaluation and Planning Project, 1974-1982. These records both document the planning process as well as provide a unique portrait of the academic units which reported to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. There is also material relating to formal unit reviews and self-studies, 1978-1982, that were not formally part of the Evaluation and Planning Project. In addition to the records from the 1970-1982 period, the record group includes a complete sequence of the Standard Survey Response Document (SSRD) starting in 1991. The records of the Office of Budget and Planning are organized into four series: Administrative Files, Unit Reviews, Correspondence, and Standard Survey Response Document.

The Office of the President records group includes the records of University of Michigan Presidents Robben Fleming, 1968-1978 and 1988 (interim); Allan Smith, 1979 (interim); Harold T. Shapiro, 1980-1987; James J. Duderstadt, 1988-1996; Homer Neal, 1996-1997 (interim); Lee C. Bollinger, 1997-2001; B. Joseph White, 2002 (interim); Mary Sue Coleman (2002-2014); and Mark Schlissel (2014-present). The record group includes annual files from the Office of the President, which include topical files and schools and colleges files. Other series in the record group include supplemental files for each president, search files, committee appointment files, audio and visual materials, development files, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) files, and ephemera.

The records of the University of Michigan President contain the central files created and collected by the President and members of the President's staff. There is some content inherited from earlier presidents, but the record group effectively begins in 1967 with the administration of Robben W. Fleming and continues through successive administrations. (Records of Presidents prior to Fleming are cataloged under the name of the individual office holder).

The University of Michigan President's records are organized into the following series: Topical Files; Schools and Colleges Files; Supplemental Files; Search Files; Committee Appointment Files; Development; Facilities; Freedom of Information Act; Audio-Visual Material Files; Ephemera; Archived Website. Three first three series are major recurring series (Topical, Schools and Colleges, and Supplemental Files). The additional series (Committee Appointment; Searches; Development; Facilities; Freedom of Information Act; Audio-Visual Material Files; Ephemera; Archived Website) are not consistently created or predictably transferred.

Although the series are collectively described, the actual ordering of the boxes in the contents listing are not necessarily consecutive given the timing and sequence of transfers.
