William Livingstone and family papers, 1850-1995 (majority within 1865-1925)

Livingstone was a Detroit, Michigan businessman, banker, and newspaper publisher. He was an advocate of improving shipping on the Great Lakes, helping to found the Lake Carriers' Association. Livingstone successfully lobbied Congress for funds to construct a channel in the lower Detroit River (the Livingstone Channel). The collection consists of manuscript and visual materials, some of which were collected by later family members. Included are diaries and account books, 1871-1882 (scattered) and 1925; correspondence and newspaper clippings; subject files pertaining to the Dime Savings Bank and the Lake Carriers' Association; and a speech book containing draft of speech written for James G. Blaine, presidential candidate in 1884. Visual materials include photographs and drawings.

The papers of William Livingstone consist of manuscript and visual materials, some of which were collected by later family members. The papers include diaries and account books, 1871-1882 (scattered) and 1925; correspondence and newspaper clippings; subject files pertaining to the Dime Savings Bank and the Lake Carriers' Association; and a speech book containing draft of speech written for James G. Blaine, presidential candidate in 1884. Many of the letters in the collection were personal communications sent to Marion Scherer from family and friends while she was away at school. Visual materials include family photographs and drawings. The collection is organized into three series, William Livingston Jr. Topical Files, Correspondence, and Visual Materials.

The William L. Culbertson, Jr., scrapbook consists of one volume containing numerous newspaper clippings, documents, photographs, hand-drawn maps and illustrations, correspondence, and various ephemeral items related to the career of US Navy officer CDR William Linn Culbertson, Jr., between 1905 and 1918.

Culbertson, Jr., scrapbook consists of one volume containing numerous newspaper clippings, documents, photographs, hand-drawn maps and illustrations, correspondence, and various ephemeral items related to the career of US Navy officer CDR William Linn Culbertson, Jr., between 1905 and 1918.

The volume (25.5 x 19 cm) has 146 pages and is bound in red marbled paper covers. The covers and spine are in poor condition. Inside of the front cover there is a loose diplomatic passport for Culbertson, Jr., issued by the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France, from August 1916 that contains personal descriptive information as well as a photographic ID portrait. The scrapbook begins with newspaper clippings from ca. 1905 and subsequent materials proceed in chronological order for the most part. Numerous items collected during Culbertson, Jr.’s time abroad contain text in foreign languages including French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, German, Arabic, and Greek.

The collection has been arranged into two series: Correspondence and Other papers. The correspondence dates from 1853 to 1933 and includes many letters addressed to his second wife Elizabeth Clark prior to their marriage. The Other Papers series concerns his activities as an educator and college president. Materials in this series include addresses, lectures, autobiographical and biographical volumes, personal account books, visual material, and other miscellaneous notebooks.

Weld-Grimké family photograph album, ca. 1860-1880

The Weld-Grimké family album is a 12.5 x 16 cm bound cartes de visite photograph album with some tintypes and gem tintypes interspersed. The album has a brown leather cover with gilt clasps. The photographs all appear to date from the 1860s to the 1870s but there is no precise date for individual photographs listed. The album has a printed title page that reads "Photographs/Boston/Roberts Brothers." The album is 50 pages with each page containing a single slot for a photograph, though some pages have multiple photographs tucked into the same slot. The photographs are almost all studio portraiture. While some of the individuals in the album have been identified (including Theodore D. Weld) the vast majority are unidentified.

One exception to this is a photograph of a satirical drawing of an unidentified individual playing some sort of instrument (loose photograph on page 49). Some of the individuals in the album have been tentatively identified with the majority unidentified. One photograph (on page 24) has been speculated to be a portrait of Charlotte Brown, an African-American servant of the Weld-Grimké family, but this has not been confirmed.

Washtenaw Intermediate School District records, 1834-1966

The records of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District predate the formal establishment of the District in 1962. Most probably, these materials were transferred from individuals concerned with the history of education and schools in Washtenaw County or from other previous county units responsible for the schools. The records have been arranged into four series: Nineteenth Century records; Manuscript school histories; Annual Statistical Reports; and Maps. The Annual Statistical Reports were for the Washtenaw County Township Clerk. These volumes, dating from school year 1902/03 to 1924/25, provide detailed information about the schools in the townships of the county. Included is the name of child, name of parent or guardian, number of children by sex, attendance records, names of teachers, and budget and salary information.

The Thomas Smith collection includes a disbound sketchbook of eighteen watercolors and six drawings depicting scenes in the northeastern United States and Canada made between 1820-1826 as well as three letters written by Smith between 1820-1822.

The Thomas Smith collection includes a disbound sketchbook of eighteen watercolors and six drawings depicting scenes in the northeastern United States and Canada made approximately between 1820-1826 as well as three letters written by Smith between 1820-1822.

The Visual Materials series contains eighteen watercolors and six drawings from a disbound sketchbook that depict scenes in the Eastern United States and Canada. While the watercolors and drawings themselves contain no exact information on their precise dates of creation, there is one unfinished pencil sketch of Fort Niagara that shows architectural features that were only in place from 1818 to 1823. Additionally, two pages contain watermarks in the paper that read "Turkey Mills J. Whatman 1818," while an inscription on the inside of the detached front cover also reads: "Thomas Smith. American Sketches 1820 to 1826." Smith is known to have made one trip to New York in the late spring and summer of 1820 and also returned from another trip there in the fall of 1821. Although presumably an amateur artist, Smith showed an uncanny eye for accurate detail, a keen ability to depict the scale of landscapes, and a vivid sense of color and light.

The Correspondence series contains three letters written by Thomas Smith to family members. The first letter, dated April 1820, is addressed to Smith's sister Eliza Elizabeth "Betsey" Smith (1802-1876) and bemoans her general lack of communication before discussing differences between American and English women, mentioning acquaintances including a "Mr. Lucas" and a "Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell", and describing events related to the wedding of a "considerable" rice planter and "Miss Lucas...now Mrs. Cordes" that took place in Charleston, South Carolina in March. This was likely the wedding of James Jameison Cordes (1798-1867) and Mary Lucas (1802-1873). Smith also makes reference to a bridesmaid named "Miss McLeod...a lady of large fortune worth as these things are estimated in S Carola: 300 negroes" while stating that "negro servants" accompanied the wedding party on horseback on their way to Middleburgh plantation. The second letter, also dated April 1820, is addressed to Smith's brother Joseph Smith VI (1800-1876) and contains a description of deer hunting conducted in the "American mode" in which several concealed hunting stands were occupied "100 to 150 yards apart" before "the negroes are sent with the hounds to drive the swamps or ponds where the deer generally conceal themselves." Smith elaborates on an unsuccessful hunting trip led by a planter named "Mr. Bryan" in which the party consisted of "Mr. Bryan, Mr. Lucas, Mr. Cordes, Mr. Hume & myself, with 2 negro slaves, all on horseback" during which Smith and Mr. Hume managed to become briefly lost in the woods. Also included are mentions of various wildlife encountered in the countryside, references to regional flora Smith intends to procure seeds of, and a description of typical South Carolinian cuisine had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner during different times of year. The third letter, dated February-March 1822 and partially written from aboard the steamship Robert Fulton while in the Gulf of Mexico, is addressed to Betsey (now "Mrs. Alfred H.") at "Messr: Jos. Hardcastle & Sons London." Betsey married Alfred Hardcastle (1791-1842) in 1821. This letter describes Smith's return to Charleston in Novemeber of 1821 following a trip to New York, spending the Christmas holiday period at Mr. Lucas's plantation, a four-day excursion in Havana, Cuba, made during the present voyage while en route from New Orleans to Charleston, and avoiding a close encounter with a "suspicious looking Schooner" off the Cape of Florida.

The Thomas Silver scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, drawings, correspondence, and ephemera related to Silver's steam engine governor, which he patented on July 3, 1855.

The Thomas Silver scrapbook (9.5" x 11.25") contains newspaper clippings, drawings, correspondence, and ephemera related to Silver's steam engine governor, which he patented on July 3, 1855. Early clippings pertain to Silver's other inventions, but the majority of material concerns his steam engine governor. Among the clippings are articles about marine engineering and about competing inventors' designs. Some articles discuss marine disasters and, as a result, call for the implementation of improved equipment. Silver also collected incoming letters, advertisements, and other ephemera items associated with his engine governor. Though Silver was based in Philadelphia, many items originated from France and Great Britain, where his inventions were more widely used than in the United States. Some articles and other items are illustrated with diagrams of steam engine governors, and one ink sketch depicts a boat carrying an oversize engine. Two issues of The Patent Bulletin, both dated 1871, are laid into the volume.

Thomas O. LeRoy journal, 1841-1842

Thomas O. LeRoy's journal contains log entries, diary entries, and drawings that he composed while sailing onboard the merchant ship Natchez from New York to Valparaíso, Chile, and back to New York between September 1841 and May 1842. LeRoy recorded the ship's progress, his observations about seafaring life, the scenery he passed, his travels in Chile, and other topics.

Thomas O. LeRoy's journal contains approximately 85 pages of log and diary entries that he composed while sailing onboard the merchant ship Natchez from New York to Valparaíso, Chile, and back to New York between September 1841 and May 1842. Also included are 9 drawings he made on the voyage, an inventory of the belongings he carried during the trip, and 7 pages of double-entry bookkeeping accounts of Captain Robert Waterman of the brig Konohassett and of Theodore Lewis of the brig Philip Howe.

LeRoy began his journal with a brief entry on August 28, 1841, and the Natchez set sail under Captain Robert Waterman on September 1. Between September 1 and November 11, LeRoy regularly kept detailed log entries documenting the ship's course, winds, and notable onboard occurrences. The log entries were often interspersed with prose accounts of life on the Natchez, in which he mentioned seeing birds and aquatic animals, and described the scenery, particularly after the Natchez reached the Brazilian coast. In early November, LeRoy interrupted his log with detailed descriptions of the scenery around Tierra del Fuego, and he resumed his regular entries until reaching Valparaíso, Chile, on November 15.

LeRoy recorded his impressions of the Chilean people and discussed his travels around the country, which included visits to nearby towns and to Santiago. He noted other ships in the harbor, reconsidered his decision to embark on a seafaring life, and discussed sailors' religious beliefs. The Natchez began its return journey on February 6, 1842, and LeRoy continued to write journal entries about his experiences onboard, sometimes mentioning his eagerness to return to his family. After a brief stop at Pernambuco, Brazil, the ship sailed through the Caribbean and, at a point of about 160 miles from New York, LeRoy composed his final entry, dated May 1, 1842. The journal is followed by an inventory of the belongings LeRoy brought along on his trip. He dedicated the volume to Midshipman Charles Cooper of New York.

LeRoy drew 9 pencil sketches during his time on the Natchez.

This collection consists of two letters, a pencil drawing of sarcophagi, a note, a calling card, and an inscribed edition of S. Weir Mitchell, The Wager and Other Poems. The two letters include one written by S. Weir Mitchell to Dr. William C. Hollopeter, clarifying that a mutual acquaintance is residing in a boarding house not the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane. The other letter is from Francis Everett, presumably to Dr. Hollopeter, concerning any involvement he may have had in an 1877 abortion malpractice case in Muncy, Pennsylvania.

The volume (11 x 7 cm) is a small notebook with a sticker on the front cover of an American top hat. Inside of the front cover the name and originating date of the society are presented. The following pages display a declaration from the society’s “board” before delving into 60 watercolor and ink illustrations of different types of hats, each of which is provided a name. John F. Shepard family; diaries, photographs, recipes and correspondence concerning family matters and nineteenth century farm life; also professional correspondence, student notebooks and lecture notes of John F. Shepard.

Although the Shepard family papers (1807-1934) cover three generations, the bulk of the materials are from John F. Shepard. The earliest correspondence is primarily addressed to his father Arthur, and to his grandfather John from family members and relatives. The letters deal with health, crops, and relatives. There are also letters from John F. Shepard's wife Berenice to her mother Mary Barnes (maiden name Van Valin) and from Berenice's father Charles to her mother. The Barnes and VanValins lived in Marshall, Michigan.

The John F. Shepard papers include professional correspondence from 1911 to 1934, mostly relating to University building plans. There are also minutes (1921-1925) of the Committee of Five on the Comprehensive Building Program, as well as Shepard's student notebooks from philosophy and psychology courses taught by James R. Angell and James H. Tuft at the University of Chicago, and by Alfred H. Lloyd and Walter B. Pillsbury at the University of Michigan.

The photographs are mainly of his wife's family, many from the late nineteenth century.

The Seth Eastman watercolors consist of 12 sketches produced by U.S. Army officer Seth Eastman. Most of these works were likely created by Eastman between approximately 1849 and 1858, including many that were executed in relation to his work as illustrator for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s six-volume ethnographic survey Information respecting the history, condition and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States, published between 1851 and 1857. Individual items measure up to 18 by 25 cm.

Sam Karres Archive, 1955-2012 (majority within 1979-2010)

This collection includes 86 sketchbooks of the Detroit artist, Sam Karres as well as miscellaneous items and publications that either discuss or correspond with his artwork.

The Sam Karres Archive largely consists of sketches of the Detroit area during the 1980s as well as other types of documents that relate to the drawings. It has been divided into six series: guidebooks, small sketchbooks, medium sketchbooks, large sketchbooks, printed materials, and miscellaneous items.

Guidebooks: In this series, there are three binders composed by Sam Karres' friend, Denny Stavros that provide background on the artist as well as discuss the content of his sketchbooks that were donated to University of Michigan's Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library for The Modern Greek Studies Collection. Following the descriptions of the sketchbooks, there are indexes and appendixes that include some of Karres' writings, photographs that complement the drawings, and photocopies of pages from the sketchbooks. The binders are divided up by the dates the sketchbooks were given: December 9, 2011, September 28, 2012, and June 20, 2013. The sketchbooks have been designated as small, medium, or large by Stavros in addition being assigned individual numeric identifiers. There is also one hand-written list of periodicals and ephemera donated by Stavros on September 28, 2012. A few of the articles and all of the ephemera relate to Sam Karres.

Small Sketchbooks: This section consists of ten sketchbooks ranging in size from 3.5 by 4. 75 inches to 5.5 by 8 inches. The majority of these sketchbooks from this series dates from the late 1970s and contends with a variety of subjects including: restaurant scenes, animals, human forms and faces, boats, and especially Greek Orthodox religious figures and practices.

Medium Sketchbooks: This series consists of twenty-two sketchbooks, ranging in size from 6 by 9 inches to 9 by 12 inches, completed between 1977 and 2009. Some of the themes depicted in the drawings are: restaurants, dogs, horses, wrestling, daily life activities, Karres' family, and characters like Greektown Stella, International Cowboy, and performers that could be found in Detroit's Greektown.

Large Sketchbooks: This series consists of forty-seven sketchbooks, ranging in size from 11 by 14 inches to 14 by 17 inches. Although the drawings in this section were completed between 1955 and 1991, the majority of the images were executed in the 1980s. Some of the themes reflected in these sketchbooks are: human forms, restaurant scenes, tug boats, factories, weightlifting, performances, Detroit's Greektown, vacations, and Karres' aging parents.

Miscellaneous: The items in this series consist of letters, news articles, exhibition catalogs, a flyer, an awards booklet, and photocopies of photographs. These assorted materials that range in date from the late 1950s to 2004, were donated by Sam Karres' friend, Denny Starvos to the University of Michigan's Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library for the Modern Greek Studies Collection on September 28, 2012. They are arranged in numerical order according to the numbers Starvos assigned to them.

Personal files, including general and family correspondence, papers detailing service with the U. S. Army military police in Europe during World War II, records concerning activities as labor arbitrator, topical files relating to work at universities of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan; files relating to activities with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting concerning in part the Annenberg/CPB project; and photographs relating to his life and career.

The Robben Fleming collection documents a career marked by diversity in the areas of his public service. The cornerstone of his life is no doubt his years as ninth president of The University of Michigan. While this role is certainly documented in these papers, there is considerable other materials relating to his service in World War II, his work as a labor arbitrator and law professor, his work with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and his advocacy in other arenas of the importance of higher education. As Fleming worked in various educational and corporate settings, the records of that service properly belonged to those agencies. This collection, by and large, consists of personal materials retained by Fleming or copies of records given to Fleming as his own. Thus, for example, while this collection includes speeches, invitations, and personal correspondence, maintained while he was President of The University of Michigan, the records of the Office of the President for Fleming's tenure have been received and cataloged separately. Even so, the content of these materials is highly valuable on any number of topics, but specifically higher education broadly defined.

The Ruth Buchanan collection consists largely of letters received from University of Michigan students and alumni serving in the military during World War II and the Korean War. Other letters commending her service during the war were received from Dwight Eisenhower and Chester Nimitz. A smaller portion of the collection includes research material on covered bridges in Michigan. Within her other non-war related correspondence, there is a letter from Jane Addams, Nov. 4, 1931. The photograph series includes portraits and informal photographs of Buchanan in the museum where she worked for thirty years; photos of university students, alumni, and Ann Arbor residents in military service during World War II and the Korean War; photos of NROTC and Navy V-12 students at the University of Michigan during World War II; photos of covered bridges and of Michigan National Guard exercises at Camp Grayling; and a drawing of Elbridge F. Bacon.

The Office of the President records group includes the records of University of Michigan Presidents Robben Fleming, 1968-1978 and 1988 (interim); Allan Smith, 1979 (interim); Harold T. Shapiro, 1980-1987; James J. Duderstadt, 1988-1996; Homer Neal, 1996-1997 (interim); Lee C. Bollinger, 1997-2001; B. Joseph White, 2002 (interim); Mary Sue Coleman (2002-2014); and Mark Schlissel (2014-present). The record group includes annual files from the Office of the President, which include topical files and schools and colleges files. Other series in the record group include supplemental files for each president, search files, committee appointment files, audio and visual materials, development files, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) files, and ephemera.

The records of the University of Michigan President contain the central files created and collected by the President and members of the President's staff. There is some content inherited from earlier presidents, but the record group effectively begins in 1967 with the administration of Robben W. Fleming and continues through successive administrations. Ann Arbor, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois family. Correspondence of Elihu B. Pond, editor of Michigan Argus, his sons, Chicago architects, Irving Kane and Allen Bartlit Pond, founders of firm of Pond & Pond, and other family members; include materials concerning family affairs, architectural projects, Jane Addams and the work of Hull House, European travels, politics especially as relates to period of the Civil War and the election of 1896; also photographs, architectural drawings and other visual materials.

The Pond Family papers consist primarily of correspondence and other materials of architects, Irving Kane (1857-1939) and Allen Bartlit Pond (1858-1929) documenting family matters, European travels, their involvement in the civic and social life of Chicago, and professional activities. The collection has been divided into four subgroups: Allen B. Pond papers; Irving Kane Pond papers; papers of other family members and miscellaneous; and visual materials.

Correspondence comprises the bulk of both the Allen and Irving Pond subgroups. This correspondence consists almost exclusively of exchanges between the brothers when they were separated because of travel, and with their parents and sister. There is little correspondence with clients, professional associates, or others outside of the family. The letters, however, are often detailed and revealing of the thoughts and activities of the Pond brothers. In addition to the usual descriptions of landscapes and social events when traveling abroad, their letters contain many comparisons of European and American trends in architecture, housing, the development of cities. To their family and with each other, the brothers also wrote of their non-professional interests: Chicago politics, social settlements in the city, humanitarian causes, and their involvement with various literary groups. Of note in the Allen Pond papers are letters containing references to Jane Addams and her work at Hull House. There are also accounts they received from family about Jane Addams and her talks when visiting Ann Arbor. Letters concerning Jane Addams are dated Sept. 1896; Jan. 1898; Sept. 18, 1898; Jan. 22,1900; Mar. 1901; May 28,1901; June 15,1901; undated 1901; Apr. 21,1902; July 7,1902; Aug. 18,1902; Feb. 16, 1903; Jan. 12,1904; Jan. 23,1905; Feb. 1905; May 29,1907; Mar. 1908; and Apr. 1908.

Their sister, Mary Louise and their mother, Mary Barlow (Allen) Pond wrote weekly of family affairs and the social and cultural events of Ann Arbor. Both comment extensively on the ideas and activities of many of the leading intellectual and literary figures of the day - William James, John Dewey, Kipling, Wharton and Shaw - as well as on their daily interactions with Angells, Cooleys and other prominent Ann Arbor families. Unfortunately, there are few surviving letters from Allen and Irving to the family in Ann Arbor. Much of the information in the collection about their work is therefore by indirect reference only.

The Paul A. Meunier photograph albums consist of three large volumes documenting the experiences of the U.S. Army 941st Engineering Aviation Topographical Battalion during World War II including basic training in the United States in 1942, assignments in Tunisia and Italy, and the journey home via the Pacific following the conclusion of the war.

All three albums in the collection are 46 x 57 cm in size and have black covers and black paper pages. Each album contains approximately 1,000 photographs. Being a professional artist, Meunier’s attention to detail and exactness is evidenced by the presence of faint framing lines an inch from page margins, with photos carefully arranged within the frames. Numerous captions are present in white ink and neatly printed in appropriate size. Since the three albums present in this collection are titled “Volume 3,” “Volume 4,” and “Volume 5,” it is presumed that Meunier likely produced at least five albums total. Both official photographs as well as personal snapshots taken by Meunier himself are included.

Album A ("Volume 3"): This album documents Meunier’s military service starting from June 1942 when he departed Cleveland for basic training, initial U.S. deployments, his assignment to Tunisia, and his unit’s journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy in December 1943. Many snapshot views of street scenes in Tunis and other places in North African Meunier explored while on leave as well as copies of official U.S. Army photographs recording visits to Tunis in 1943 by high-ranking U.S. officials (including Secretary of War Henry Stimson and Generals Eisenhower and Spaatz) are present.

Album B ("Volume 4"): This album documents the transfer of Meunier’s unit to San Severo, Italy. Images of particular interest show the unit working on the production of large-scale lithographically produced bird’s-eye view maps with designated bombing targets charted out. Visits while on leave to Naples, Capri, and Amalfi are also thoroughly represented. Also present is a hand-drawn map of the streets of San Severo and an annotated aerial view of Capri.

Album C ("Volume 5"): This album includes official photos of airborne fighter planes and bombers, aerial views of target sites, and artwork by a fellow soldier. Meunier’s snapshots show soldiers at work as well as on tourist visits to famous Italian sites such as Rome, Florence, Pisa, and Pompeii. Although materials are not arranged in strict chronological order, this volume covers a period of time from when Meunier’s company was headquartered in Bari in mid-1944 to his journey home by ship through the Panama Canal in mid-1945. Also present are a handful of views of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 1944.

Ann Arbor-based artist specializing in images of local businesses and sites. The collection has been arranged in three series. The Artwork series includes drawings of buildings and other projects, publications containing reproductions of his work, and files relating to galleries, exhibits, auctions, and art fairs. The Supplemental Materials series concerns the art organizations and associations of which Kemnitz was a member, correspondence, and files pertaining to other activities, notably the Bird Hills Park controversy. The third series, Southern White Migration to Detroit in the 1930s, consists of research materials and reports resulting from Kemnitz' research as a member of a University of Michigan sociology seminar on metropolitan community organization. A portion includes Elmer Akers' research on the Black Legion.

The papers of Milt Kemnitz have been divided into three series. The first series, ARTWORK, focuses on the artwork itself, and its reproduction and dissemination. This includes the following subseries: Drawings of Buildings, Other Projects, Publications and Galleries, Exhibits, Auctions & Art Fairs. Michigan Historical Collections topical photograph collection, circa 1860-1959

The Michigan Historical Collections Topical Photograph Collection offer a broad and varied glimpse into nearly one hundred years of Michigan history, from the 1860s into the 1950s. The provenance of most of the photographs has been lost and therefore these images have been grouped together by subject into an artificial accumulation. Subjects depicted range from industry and transportation to clothing styles and social customs.

The photographs in this collection were received from various sources. Subjects include carriages, automobiles, Great Lakes shipping, railroads, and mass transit, especially street railroads. There are also images documenting activities within the mining, forestry, and lumber industries, mostly in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Also included are photographs of various ethnic groups and their societies, notably of Native Americans (1870s-1930s) of the Manistee and Ludington, Michigan, areas. Some of the images are street views and private residences in various Michigan towns and cities. Of interest are photographs of Michigan units taking part in the Spanish-American War and the "Polar Bear Expedition" of World War I. There is also a series of bookplates, [acquired from?] William H. Bicknell, many of which relate to the University of Michigan.

Correspondence, journals, manuscripts of writings, and class materials, including papers detailing his work with the United Fruit Company in Central America, 1928-1931, his later activities with the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation, especially his interest in mosquito research and malaria control programs during the 1930's and 1940's, and his demographic studies of the people of the Ifalik Atoll in the South Pacific in 1953; and photographs.

The Bates papers cover the period 1913-1974 and include material relating to all phases of his career, including his research in Guatemala and Honduras with the United Fruit Company, his studies of mosquito biology and malaria control programs during the 1930's and 1940's in Albania, Egypt, Colombia, and elsewhere and his later investigations into problems of demography and human ecology. The collection includes correspondence, personal and scientific journals, miscellaneous entomological notes, manuscripts of many of his books, articles, and book reviews, copies of the scripts of his television appearances, and University of Michigan class notes. The collections also includes personal photographs and photographs relating to his scientific research.

This collection is made up of 2 volumes that Marianna Chandler Lanman composed while studying at Mrs. Rowson's Academy for Young Ladies in Boston, Massachusetts, around 1814. One concerns arithmetic, focusing on practical applications in bookkeeping, conversion, and monetary transactions; the other contains copied poems, calligraphic alphabets, and graphic illustrations.

Lanman dedicated both volumes to her parents.

Lanman composed the first volume, entitled "Practical Arithmetic[:] Comprising All the Rules for Transacting Business" (10"x16", 60 pages), at Mrs. Rawson's Academy in 1814. Its sections, each labeled in calligraphy, concern mathematical operations, rules and theorems; weights and measures; and practical applications of mathematical principles. Many of the later pages concern subjects such as the calculation of simple and compound interest, the value of "federal money" against "lawful money" (state currencies), commission charges, and bookkeeping. The explanatory text is accompanied by finished exercises and problems. The volume also includes tables of weights and measures and an index.

The second volume, "Specimens of Penmanship" (16"x10", 23 pages), is undated. Lanman copied poetry and proverbs on the book's odd-numbered pages; most concern subjects such as happiness, rural living, and gratitude. The title of a poem on the "Pleasures of retired Life" is written on a drawing of a ribbon (p. 19). One poem, entitled "Virtue's Tears Embalm the Brave," is dedicated to the memory of American casualties of the War of 1812 (p. 21). The volume contains several drawings: a hermit in his home (p. 3), a bald eagle among patriotic decorations (p. 21), a sailing ship (p. 21), and a line drawing of a bird with the word "industry" in its feathers (p. 23). The volume also includes examples of cursive, German, and Old English alphabets.

Lincoln Highway Association Records, 1911-1941 (majority within 1912-1930)

Formed in 1913 by Carl G. Fisher, Frank A. Seiberling, and Henry B. Joy, the Lincoln Highway Association was made up of representatives from the automobile, tire, and cement industries. The Association aimed to plan, fund, construct, and promote the first transcontinental highway in North America. The route ran from New York to San Francisco, and covered approximately 3,400 miles. The Detroit headquarters of the Association closed in 1928. This collection contains: correspondence, particularly between members of the Association and government officials; meeting minutes; reports, bulletins, and newsletters published by the Association; motorist maps of the route; and annotated editions of The Complete Official Road Guide of the Lincoln Highway. Photographs from the Lincoln Highway Association Records have been digitized and are accessible online at the Lincoln Highway Digital Image Collection (http://quod.lib.umich.edu/l/linchigh). The Digital Image Collection contains over 3,000 images including views of construction underway, towns and cities, markers, bridges, cars, camp sites, scenic views, and snapshots of Association directors and field secretaries traveling the route.

The Lincoln Highway Association Records date from 1911 to 1993 with the bulk of materials concentrated before 1930. The records are divided into five series: Official Business (1912-1941), Correspondence (1912-1929), Planning (1914-1940), Publicity (1911-1993), Publications (1915-1935), Jens Jensen Drawings (1922-1924) and Miscellaneous.

The Lincoln Highway Association archive was donated to the University of Michigan's Transportation Library in 1937. The archive was transferred to the Special Collections Library in 1992.

Communication was frequent between members of the Association as well as with officials from towns, counties, states, and the federal government. Correspondence and meeting minutes make up an important part of the collection. The Association published reports, bulletins, and newsletters to keep board members and the public aware of the Highway's progress. Maps of the driving route along with mileages were provided for motorists for navigation as were five editions of The Complete Official Road Guide of the Lincoln Highway .

The Lewis Burnett Kellum papers (5.8 linear feet and 1 oversized folder) primarily documents Kellum's professional life. The material is dated from 1837-1995 and consists of correspondence and topical files. Significant subjects in the collection include Kellum's fieldwork in Mexico as well as his involvement in 20th International Geological Congress that was held in Mexico. Also included in the Topical Files series is a small amount of material relating to his wife Gail Kellum Curtis (married in 1949).

The Lee Walp Family Juvenile Book Collection is the collection of the late Russell Lee Walp (1906-2003), an avid book-collector and Professor of Botany at Marietta College (Marietta, Ohio). Mr Walp, along with his wife, Esther "Sparkie" Walp, collected materials related to the best in 20th century children's literature, with an emphasis on well-known illustrators and their illustrations. He corresponded with many illustrators and authors, whose letters, manuscripts, and original artwork may be found in the collection. Ed Emberley and Robert Andrew Parker are the most well-represented, but Roger Duvoisin, Hardie Gramatky, Robert Lawson, and Shimin Symeon, as well as scores of other luminaries in the world of children's literature are also represented. Included in the collection are notes, bibliographies, and catalogues documenting how Mr. Walp built and used his collection to educate the public are included, along with a small amount of material related to the study and teaching of botany.

The Lee Walp Family Juvenile Book Collection contains two types of materials: information about the Walps and their collecting, and information about the illustrators and authors. Material related to Mr. Walp's collecting may be found in the following series: Personal, Book Collecting, Walp Library Catalog Cards, and Articles, Exhibits, and Lectures by the Walps. Information about the illustrators and authors is concentrated in the series Illustrators and Authors and Art, and also in Articles and Clippings, Audiovisual, Posters, and Realia. The approximately 5,000 books in the Walp Collection include a complete set of first editions of the Caldecott Medal Books, and first editions of all but three Newbery Medal-winning books. These books are cataloged separately.

The Walp Collection has material by or about over 250 children's book illustrators and authors. The two most well-represented are Ed Emberley and Robert Andrew Parker. There is also a significant amount on Roger Duvoisin, Hardie Gramatky, Robert Lawson, and Symeon Shimin.

Records of the Law School document the evolution of legal education at the University of Michigan as well as tenures of various deans and faculty. Documentation includes historical and class files; student organizations and activities; planning and construction of Law School buildings; information on William W. Cook and his bequest; topical files; deans' correspondence; reports and minutes. Also included are materials related to the Thomas M Cooley and William W. Cook lecture series and portraits of faculty and students, photographs of activities of the Judge Advocate General's School held at the Law School during World War II, the construction of the Law Quadrangle and Law Library addition, and student activities.

The Law School Records begin in 1852 and span the years through the end of the twentieth century. The records document the history of legal education at the University of Michigan, the administration of the Law School, and the lives of some of the scholars who have studied and taught there.

The physical arrangement of the records reflects the various accessions of material that have been received from the Law School over the years. This finding aid is structured to reflect the intellectual organization of the records - continuing series and like materials have been brought together regardless of when the records were transferred to the library. Laidley family papers, 1838-1886 (majority within 1838-1861)

The Laidley family papers consist of letters written by members of the Laidley family regarding family news, politics, and life in the military. The collection also contains fiction written by William Sydney Laidley, a travel journal, legal documents, photographs, and genealogical materials.

The Laidley family papers are comprised of letters, a travel diary, miscellaneous documents, creative writing, genealogical materials, business cards, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

Correspondence: The bulk of the letters are from Theodore T.S. Laidley to his father, John Osborne Laidley, between 1838 and 1861. The collection also contains letters from Theodore to his brother William Sydney Laidley, and letters from various friends and family members, including Amacetta Laidley and George W. Summers, to John Osborne Laidley.

Theodore's early letters describe his life at the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating from West Point, Theodore spent time at the Watervliet Arsenal near Troy, New York. He wrote to his father monthly about military life, his enjoyment of New York State, and his health. Theodore took an interest in politics, and was very much concerned about bills, policies, and appointments that he felt were detrimental to the future of the army.

Letters from Theodore contain news about his family, his wife's family, and their health. He also wrote to his father with advice about his siblings. Fewer letters exist from the other Laidley children, and Theodore refers to them being infrequent correspondents. Amacetta did write her father from Washington, recounting politicians and writers she had met. Amacetta's husband, George W. Summers, wrote to John Osborne Laidley about legal matters and his future in politics. Laidley's friends and children wrote frequently about faith and church matters. Following John Osborne Laidley's death in 1863, the bulk of the letters are from Theodore Laidley to his brother, William Sydney Laidley.

Diary: The travel diary is the record of an unidentified family member's journey from Charleston, West Virginia, to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1879. It contains several pencil drawings including sketches of bridges, a ship, the Chesapeake Bay, and a chandelier.

Documents: The miscellaneous documents consist of receipts, a bill of sale, and a deed.

Creative Writing: The creative writing series contains two poems and a short novel of the Civil War written by William Sydney Laidley.

Personal and Genealogical Materials: The personal and genealogical materials consist of Thomas Laidley's report cards, including some from West Point, a large family tree, information about individual family members, and records of births, deaths, and marriages.

Business Cards: The business card series is made up of the business cards of Theodore Laidley and William Sydney Laidley. William Sydney Laidley's business card features a pencil drawing of an infant on the reverse.

Newspaper Clippings: The collection includes two newspaper clippings. The first is a report of the sinking of the steamer Sultan and the death of Sarah Laidley Poage. The second is a report of a trip to Europe by a member of the Laidley family.

Photographs: The photographs series is composed of three photographs, including two of William Sydney Laidley and one of an unidentified member of the Laidley family.

The King's Own Borderers photograph album is a 54 page, 23.4 x 15.5 cm embossed leather bound album containing portrait photographs of individuals and groups associated with the Stoney family and the British army's 25th Regiment of Foot known as The King's Own Borderers. The images are cartes de visite, with some larger albumen prints and tintypes interspersed. The album contains a wide variety of other visual materials including photographic prints of artwork, pen and ink drawings, calligraphy, newspaper clippings, printed cartoons, and greeting cards. The cover of the album is inscribed "G. Ormond Stoney/King's Own Borderers/5th July 1864." The album appears to have evolved over time in several different stages.

The album appears to have had at least three different stages of construction. The first as a traditional 1860s carte de visite photograph album kept by its namesake G. Ormond Stoney (hereafter referred to as Ormond) comprised of photographs of family members interspersed with related newspaper clippings.

The album appears to have been revised with significant additions in the 1870s-1880s, including more photographs of family members as well as commercial photographic prints. The majority of those represented were army officers, with Anglican priests and politicians; many being contemporaries and associates of Ormond's father, George Butler Stoney (1819-1899). Clipped autographs of many are included beneath the photos and appear to be from correspondence to George Butler Stoney.

Various clues to point to Ormond Stoney's sister Jane (Janie) Stoney Smith as a contributor to the album. Not only is she frequently represented in the album, but the album has several pictures of her husband Arthur Smith and his family--many more so than any other family that married into the Stoney family. Arthur and Janie married on September 19, 1867--the same date on the autograph posted under Arthur's picture. Arthur died in 1870 leaving Janie a pregnant widow with a young son, Herbert (see p.24 for his portrait), and an even younger daughter, Ethel Maud. Newspaper clippings around the portrait of Arthur on p.13 mention his death as well as the birth of Herbert and Ethel, though not of Florence, the youngest daughter. Although Jane's two daughters are not represented in the album, on page 44 it appears that at one point a photograph of both of her daughters was extant.

While Jane's younger sister Wilhelmina married Colin McKenzie Smith, another son of William Smith, she did not do so until 1889. The focus on Janie's husband Arthur and their children, suggests Jane rather than Wilhelmina as a significant contributor to the album.

George Ormond's wife Meylia has not been identified in the album and may not be present, however, her father, Sinclair Laing is represented. Laing appears to have been a correspondent with George Butler Stoney.

At some later date, likely in the late 19th century, decorative gold painted borders were added, along with chromolithograph stickers, known as "scraps." These include a series illustrating Robinson Crusoe. Unlike the earlier additions which point to Janie Smith, these later additions might have been the work of a child playing with what would have been a 30 year old album. The gold paint overlapping earlier items (see p. 28 for example) suggests a later date, as do the "scraps" made popular after 1880. The seemingly random nature of the placement of the "scraps" is quite the opposite of the carefully placed and planned addition probably done by Janie Smith.

Of the children represented in the album, three of them would be killed in World War One: Thomas Ramsay Stoney (1882-1918), George Butler Stoney (1877-1915), and Herbert Stoney Smith (1868-1915).

  • Two group portraits of young men in military uniform, presumably with George Ormond present in both photographs (p.2, and back inside cover).
  • A portrait of a dog that if viewed from another angle appears to be an individual with a disfigured face (p.7).
  • A commercial carte de visite of a Zulu warrior identified as King Cetewayo (likely incorrect, the chief of the Matabele) (p.41).
  • A portrait of Napoleon, Prince Imperial, in his military uniform ca. 1879 before he died in the service of the British Army during the Anglo-Zulu War (p.40).
  • A print of Rosturk Castle in County Mayo, Ireland (p.47).
  • A retouched portrait of a dog posed with a military hat, cane and pipe. (p.23).
  • An 1873 program for an "evening reading" of two different farces, "Little Toddlekins," and "The Dead Shot," done to raise money for Mrs. Palmer, the retiring battalion nurse (p.53). On the outside of the program is a print of Portland House, a manor owned by members of the Stoney family.

John Sunnocks account book and Newbold Hough Trotter sketches, 1792-1801, ca. 1880

This collection consists one bound volume including both financial receipts and sketches. The first part the volume contains 38 pages of receipts of payments from John Sunnocks to various people he had transacted business with in the late 18th century. The rest of the volume contains sketches circa 1880, attributed to Newbold Hough Trotter, an American artist known for his work illustrating natural landscapes and animals.

This single bound volume includes both financial receipts and sketches. The first part the volume contains 38 pages of receipts of payments from John Sunnocks to various people he transacted business with in late 18th century Philadelphia. The next approximately 150 pages contain sketches attributed to Newbold Hough Trotter, an American artist known for his work illustrating natural landscapes and animals. The second half of the volume is unused.

It is likely Newbold came into possession of the book through his wife, Ann Trotter. Ann's great-grandfather, William Dawson, was named executor of John Sunnock's estate at the time of his death in 1793. This is noted in some of the last receipts in the volume.

The receipts date from June 20, 1792 to January 31, 1801 and are written by the individual receiving the payment or by John Sunnocks, or someone on behalf of John Sunnocks, and signed by the individual receiving payment. The currency shifts between pounds and dollars, and some receipts are exchanges of said currencies. The receipts vary in specificity. Many relate to his business as a trunk maker, for goods and services such as animal skins, lumber, and freight. Other expenses shown are taxes, rent, and military fines. Some of the more recurring businesses and individuals found in these receipts are as follows: Moses Levy (attorney), John Field & Son (merchants), Andrew Tybout (merchant), Roberts & Twamley (ironmongers), Abbot & Barnes (curriers), David Moffat (sea captain), Daniel Drinker (merchant), and William Watson (sea captain).

The sketches are in pencil and undated. They mostly depict animals, including many images of lions. Other drawings/scenes include profile portraits of men and women, a man hunting, a ship at sea, and a man presenting artwork. A few drawings appear to have been done by a child.

The John Sayles Papers consists of documents, images, artwork and graphic material related to the noted filmmaker's life and career. Also included are the papers of Sayles' partner and producer, Maggie Renzi.

The John Sayles series includes material related to Sayles' personal life and acting career as well as interviews and articles unrelated to specific projects.

The Sayles as Actor subseries consists of photographs, correspondence, scripts, and other materials related to Sayles's work in projects directed by others. Many of the photographs include actor David Strathairn. Articles and Interviews include articles and book reviews written by Sayles, and interviews with Sayles which are not focused on a specific project, although some project-specific clippings are mixed in.

The Events and Festivals subseries contains invitations, programs, photographs, and other material related to film festivals, readings, and public appearances. The photographs span several decades, and include portraits of Sayles alone, and Sayles with Maggie Renzi.

The Maggie Renzi series contains Ms. Renzi's notebooks and journals arranged chronologically.

The Writings series contains drafts, notes, photographs, research, and other materials associated with Sayles's work as a writer of novels, movies, stories, essays, and articles.

The Notebooks series, which includes iterations of Sayles's works, provides insight into his creative process. The series is organized by the title information provided by Sayles on the notebook covers. Projects are grouped together whenever possible. Individual notebooks may contain multiple projects, or a particular project may be documented in more than one notebook.

The notebooks include drafts of narratives; dialogues for screenplays, short stories, and novels; and drafts for a few articles featuring Sayles. Research materials include notes made during the research process. Most of the notebooks are written in English, however some, particularly those related to Los Gusanos and Men with Guns (Hombres Armados), are in Spanish.

Materials that are specific to movies and screenplays include song lists, casting information, cues, drawings, and stage directions. There are examples of birds' eye set views for some of his produced works. One of the A Moment in the Sun notebooks contains drawings of horses related to research on harnessing and horse anatomy. Aspects of daily life, such as grocery and to do lists, are included.

The Sayles Scripts are organized in five different series; Rewrites, Produced, Television, Unproduced, and Producer. The materials, organized by project, include drafts, scene breakdowns, notes, correspondence, storyboards, photographs, song lists, character lists, and miscellaneous documentation.

The Legal series contains court documents and materials associated with two lawsuits brought against John Sayles. Virginia L. Towler versus John Sayles et al. involved copyright infringement in the screenplay of Sayles' s 1992 film Passion Fish. Karen C. Herzog versus Castle Rock Entertainment, a California partnership et al. involved copyright infringement in the film Lone Star. The series includes witness binders, trial notebooks, photocopied legal briefs, evidence, transcribed testimonies, motions, memoranda, and official court documents used by legal representation for both the defendants and plaintiffs. Sayles and his partners were cleared of wrongdoing in both cases and the appeals that followed.

The Return of the Secaucus 7 series consists of materials from the 1979 film, written and directed by John Sayles, about the reunion of seven college friends who met when arrested on the way to a protest. The actors include Bruce MacDonald, Maggie Renzi, Adam LeFevre, Maggie Cousineau, Gordon Clapp, and Jean Passanante.

The Legal subseries holds documentation on licensing and syndication; organization and dissolution of the production company Salispuedes; and bankruptcy of the rights holding company, Cinecom. The Business and Financial subseries contains correspondence, royalty reports, expenses, agreements with cast and crew, and tax forms. Movie dialogues and undated scripts, including an annotated version, can be found in the Scripts subseries.

Instances of potentially offensive language, release forms, and actors' headshots and resumes, including Adam LeFevre and Mark Arnott, are documented in the Product and Post-Production subseries. Publicity and Distribution includes information on rights film library rights, foreign and domestic rights, and a number of advertisements. The Articles and Reviews subseries contains domestic and foreign newspaper clippings, articles, film reviews, and radio transcripts. Slides, negatives, contact sheets, publicity stills, taken on the set and behind-the-scenes can be found in the Photographs subseries.

Included in the Lianna series are materials from the 1983 film written and directed by John Sayles. The Correspondence subseries includes fan mail. The materials in the Legal subseries relate to copyright, licensing, and contracts. The Business and Financial records contain documentation related to the Winwood Company. The Scripts subseries includes notes for scenes, draft scripts, and dialogues.

Product and Post-Production is comprised of call sheets and daily production reports. The Publicity and Distribution subseries contains information related to film distribution, press kits, and international publicity packets. Articles and Reviews consists of domestic newspaper clippings, film reviews, and articles from foreign publications. Photographs, slides, negatives, contact sheets, and publicity stills, taken on the set and behind-the-scenes, are found in the Photgraphs subseries.

The Baby It's You series consists of material from the 1983 film written and directed by John Sayles, starring Rosanna Arquette, Vincent Spano, Joanna Merlin and Jack Davidson. Set in the 1960s, it follows the relationship between a high-achieving student and a working-class boy who dreams of being the next Frank Sinatra.

The Legal subseries contains a report on copyright for home video distribution of the film. In the Scripts subseries there are several drafts as well as a release dialogue script. Production and Post-Production contains the deal memos for the direction, development and production of the film. The Publicity and Distribution subseries contains press releases in English and Japanese as well as correspondence regarding home video and screening rights for the film.

The Articles and Reviews subseries is comprised of magazine and newspaper reviews and advertising, and two folders of radio and TV review transcripts. Of note is the Photographs subseries containing prints and negatives for a number of publicity stills, a posed crew photo, several behind the scenes photographs, and a set of publicity stills with attached captions from Paramount Pictures.

The Brother from Another Planet series consists of material from the 1984 film written, directed, and edited by John Sayles. The film, starring Joe Morton, tells the story of an alien who lands in Harlem, where he is chased by bounty hunters from his home planet. In the early 1990s, planning began to make the film into a television series, but it was never produced.

The Correspondence subseries consists of letters from legal professional Marsha Brooks, from Colton, Weissbert, Hartnick, Yamin, & Sheresky, representing The Brother from Another Planet. The Legal materials deal with copyright research, title search, incorporation, and dissolution papers for A-Train, the corporation Sayles created for the filming and production of the film. The Business and Financial subseries includes fiscal documentation, cost and profit statements, tax information, bills, invoices, and receipts for production and distribution.

Both the television and film versions of the project are included in the Scripts subseries. Television scripts include a notebook with dialogue, character information, and scenes. Additionally there are multiple drafts of scripts for the unproduced show written in 1991-1992. Holdings for the film include a draft from 1983 and a continuity and dialogue script. The Production and Post-Production subseries includes three delivery binders (binders removed) with a variety of documents to be delivered to the studio or distributor of a film at the completion of post-production. Delivery Binder 1 includes (but is not limited to) quality control reports, credits, a press kit, copyright documents, title report, music licenses and cue sheets. Delivery Binder 2 has cast and crew deal memos, extras releases, location and art department releases. Delivery Binder 3 includes dialogue and continuity lists, a shooting script and lined script. In addition, various documents on each cast member such as cast and crew deal memos, payroll information, time cards, and start and end employment forms are included. Production binder materials contain different versions of the script, shooting schedules and character breakdowns.

Music and Scores highlights include notes from John Sayles on incorporating music into the film's score by Mason Daring. The majority of files within the section are made up of forms regarding the licensing of music in the film.

Highlights of Publicity and Distribution include the Silver City Express bus tour to Santa Fe, New Mexico and Colorado Springs, Colorado along with Denver, Colorado. The tour included a screening of film, live music, and a panel discussion about political filmmaking and the 2004 presidential election. The event was produced along with Newmarket Films and the New Mexico Women's Foundation. Other documents include advertisements, marketing materials (bumper stickers, one sheets, and pamphlets in English, Italian and Swedish), and international and domestic distribution agreements and drafts.

Articles and Reviews contains photocopies of newspapers and printouts from newspaper websites. The articles and reviews are organized according to international and domestic newspaper publications, with the majority from domestic publications. The domestic publications are organized according to state.

The Awards, Events and Festivals subseries includes invitations to attend political fundraisers and film festivals, such as the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, New York and the Bush in 30 Seconds political advertising contest sponsored by MoveOn.org voter fund. Also included are pamphlets and programs from domestic and international film festivals.

The Photographs subseries consists of contact sheets, slides, and cast and crew group photographs. One folder includes photographs intended for publicity materials labeled "rejected by producer Maggie Renzi".

Oversize Materials includes publicity and distribution materials, such as concept art for publicity posters.

Honeydripper, the 2007 film written, directed and edited by John Sayles, is centered on a blues club in 1950s rural Alabama, and features traditional rhythm and blues music and original songs. The actors include Danny Glover, Charles Dutton, Lisa Gay Hamilton, and Gary Clark, Jr.

The Correspondence subseries holds handwritten letters and emails between the filmmakers (John Sayles and Maggie Renzie) and several individuals who worked with them on the film. The Legal materials, demonstrating close collaboration with the legal representation of the production company, cover the film's copyright status and various signed legal certificates. The Business and Financial subseries consists of payroll for cast and crew, account payments, invoices organized by company name, petty cash envelopes, and a variety of accounting reports, including posting, closing and payroll reports.

Numerous drafts and master copies of Scripts, utilized before and during filming, are accompanied by supporting documents (source material, notes from Sayles, plot outlines, synopses, and related correspondence) used to write the scripts. The Music and Scores subseries consists of materials regarding the songs used in the film, information on the film's musical actors, and agreements with Rhino Records regarding the soundtrack.

The Production and Post-production subseries documents John Sayles' roles as director, screenwriter, and editor of Honeydripper and Maggie Renzi's work as the film's producer. Dating from 2004 to 2006, pre-production materials include items regarding casting, research of 1950s culture, location scouting in Alabama, and paperwork between Honeydripper Films and the various labor unions (notably the Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild of America, and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees). Materials created and utilized during production incorporate a variety of schedules and calendars, including call sheets and shooting schedules. Reports summarizing daily progress provide detailed insight into various aspects of filming, such as the daily production reports, day out of day reports, and camera reports. The Post-production materials provide audio reports and cue sheets that demonstrate the technicalities of the automated dialog replacement (ADR) process and sound engineering. The wrap book and producer Maggie Renzi's production binders combine documents from all phases of production, providing an overview of the making of Honeydripper.

Publicity and Distribution materials document the planning, creation, and accumulation of publicity materials. The majority of the subseries consists of materials for the musical tour of the Honeydripper All-Star Band, a group of the film's musical cast that toured and performed at major music festivals in 2007 to promote the film. Articles and Reviews contains international and national press, including reviews of the film, interest pieces on the cast and John Sayles, and articles about the Honeydripper All-Star Band musical tour.

The majority of the Awards, Events, and Festivals relates to the exhibition of Honeydripper at dozens of film festivals and noted screenings around the world. Correspondence between Sayles's staff and festival representatives, flight and hotel information, daily schedules, festival programs, and local articles about the screenings make up the volume of the materials regarding each festival. The awards materials offer insight into the process of applying for major film awards and the proceedings after a nomination. Award ceremonies include the Academy Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the NAACP Image awards for which Honeydripper received two nominations.

The Photographs subseries contains photographic production materials from 2006 used during production and post-production for continuity purposes.

The Amigo series consists of material from the 2010 film written, directed, and edited by John Sayles. The actors include Joel Torre, who also co-produced the film, Chris Cooper, Garrett Dillahunt, DJ Qualls, Yul Vazquez, Bembel Roco, and Rio Locsin. The film is set in 1900, during the Philippine-American War, and filmed on location in Bohol, Philippines. The majority of the cast and crew are from the Philippines. Some of the post-production work was done in the Philippines.

The Legal documents contain copyright and license agreements. The turnover documents in this section consist of records for the Baryo Amigo Continuity Project (formerly Baryo Living Museum Project) in Toril, Maribojoc, Bohol, Philippines. Sayles donated the movie set structures and costumes to the city council of Toril to help create a museum about Philippine village life in the 1900s. The Business and Financial materials consist of invoices, payments and wire transfers to individuals and companies in the Philippines.

The Scripts subseries reflects the changing titles and inspiration for the film. The screenplay, formerly titled Baryo, was inspired by Sayles's book A Moment in the Sun. Some scripts are both in English and Tagalog. Music and Scores includes cue sheets and musician contracts as well as sheet music examples based on 19th century Philippine songs.

Production and Post-Production materials consist of background research for the film. Topics include 1890s U.S. media and politics, first-hand accounts of various wars, basic history of the Spanish-American and Philippine–American wars, historical prisons and execution methods, and Philippine life and industry. Other documents relate to the cast and crew, including US/Philippine travel arrangements, contracts, and individual folders for the main cast members. There are large production and director's production binders, production and post-production schedules, editor's logs, sound and camera reports, and information on costumes and props, including a folder of maps. Post-production documents include information on video and audio packages, subtitling, and MPAA ratings.

The majority of the Publicity and Distribution subseries is made up of correspondence and agreements relating to various US and international distribution companies. Also included are draft and finalized press kits, information about initial screenings, and travel and schedule information for many promotional interviews. The Articles and Reviews include a large press book with collected newspaper, web and radio interviews with Sayles, as well as clippings from US and Philippine newspapers and film festival literature.

Correspondence, travel arrangements, and schedules relating to five international film festivals where Amigo was screened can be found in the Awards, Events and Festivals subseries.

Go for Sisters includes documents for the 2013 film written, directed and edited by John Sayles and produced by Edward James Olmos. The cast includes Lisa Gay Hamilton, Edward James Olmos and Yolanda Ross.

The Business and Financial documents include purchase orders and a check register organized in alphabetical order.

The Production and Post-Production documents contain script notes and camera and sound logs which were part of a general production binder. The binder was removed but the documents kept in original order. Of interest are Shoot Day documentation that outlines activities for each day of shooting, and includes sections of the script, wrap report forms, personal release forms, script supervisor reports, sound reports, time sheets, crew call sheets, and actors' production time reports. The Locations folders contain contracts, permits, maps, and call times at specific locations. Wrap Book folders contain memos, call sheets, cast day reports, cast and crew lists, contacts lists, information on credits, extras and their contracts, and other production documents used at the end of the production.

Publicity and Distribution contains a 4x6 publicity card for Go for Sisters. In Awards, Events and Festivals, a program for the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico is included along with an invitation for Maggie Renzi to attend a dinner held during the festival. John Sayles was invited as a special guest and Go for Sisters was screened. The Photographs subseries contains miscellaneous continuity photographs and behind the scenes pictures taken by stills photographer John Castillo.

The Audio/Moving Image series consists of audio and video recordings in various formats. The Moving Image subseries includes clips, interviews, electronic press kits, and dailies from Sayles' films. The Audio subseries includes music, interviews, and sound tracks.

This collection contains letters written and received by members of the Jewett and Mack families of Pennsylvania and New York in the early to mid-19th century. Alfred Wolcott Mack and his wife, Betsey Jewett, wrote and received a majority of the correspondence, which relates to topics such as farming in western New York, family health, and other family news.

This collection contains 24 letters written and received by members of the Jewett and Mack families of Pennsylvania and New York in the early to mid-19th century. Alfred Wolcott Mack and his wife, Betsey Jewett, wrote and received a majority of the correspondence, which relates to topics such as farming in western New York, family health, and other family news.

The first item is a letter that Nathan Jewett wrote to his wife Electa while working in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1809; other early material includes personal letters between members of the Mack family. Most items dated after 1840 relate to Alfred Mack and his wife, Betsey Jewett. In a letter to his wife, Mack described and drew a piece of property located near Phelps, New York, where the couple considered moving in September 1842. After moving to Barre, New York, in 1843, Betsey Jewett Mack corresponded with her parents in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania. Betsey and Alfred Mack discussed their lives in Barre and commented on local farming methods and economic conditions; in the mid-1840s, they also wrote about their efforts to locate and purchase a different farm. Electa Jewett occasionally provided family and social news. Betsey and Alfred Mack's daughter Ellen also wrote 2 letters to her grandmother; in one undated letter, she enclosed a drawing of a piano.

Other correspondence includes a letter Nathan Jewett received from his brother-in-law, Dana Fox, who described an incident in which he believed he had been possessed by Satan (May 15, 1845), and a letter to Betsey Mack from a cousin, L. M. Mack, who enclosed a cut-out woman' silhouette (June 9, [1852]).

The Islamic Art Archives is composed of six collections, including those of Mehmet Ağa-Oğlu, Arthur Upham Pope, Donald Newton Wilber, Oleg Grabar, Marianna Shreve Simpson, and the Afghanistan Archaeological Remains Photographs Collection. The collection also includes photographic prints of the pages of the illustrated manuscripts Maqamat and Shah Nama, and additional photographs of Islamic architecture.

The Islamic Art Archives is composed of six collections, including those of Mehmet Ağa-Oğlu, Arthur Upham Pope, Donald Newton Wilber, Oleg Grabar, Marianna Shreve Simpson, and the Afghanistan Archaeological Remains Photograph. The Mehmet Ağa-Oğlu collection documents the Islamic and pre-Islamic art and architecture of the Middle East, Persia, the Caucasus, Western Asia, North Africa, and Southern Spain. Arthur Upham Pope focused primarily on Persian architecture and monuments, but his collection also includes photographs of Persian ceramics, textiles, and illustrated manuscripts. Wilber, Pope's colleague, also primarily studied Iranian monuments but he focused on those built during the Achaemenid and Sasanian empires. Oleg Grabar's work focused on the architecture of the seventh and eighth centuries of the Umayyad dynasty, the architecture of Jerusalem under Islamic rule, Arabic and Persian illustrated manuscripts and ornaments, and contemporary Islamic architecture. On the other hand, the Afghanistan Archaeological Remains Photograph collection depicts Afghanistan sculptures, statues, figural reliefs, pottery, and other archaeological remains, the majority of which are from the Kabul Museum in Afghanistan. Finally, Dr. Simpson's collection documents her work and her notes from her study of Islamic manuscripts around the world. The collection also includes photographic prints of the pages of the illustrated manuscripts Maqamat and Shah Nama.

The Hopkins family papers contain wide variety of materials relating to the Hopkins family of Vermont and California. A few of the wide variety of topics covered include the Episcopal Church, student life at the University of Vermont, the 1849 Gold Rush and 19th-century life in California, the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, art, and music.

The Hopkins Family papers document the activities of several generations of the Hopkins family of Vermont and California, whose members included prominent 19th century artists, musicians, religious figures, and writers. Among its notable figures are John Henry Hopkins (1792-1868), the first Episcopal bishop of Vermont; John Henry Hopkins, Jr., best known for writing the song "We Three Kings"; and Caspar Hopkins, a writer, early explorer of southern Oregon, and miner and entrepreneur during the California Gold Rush. Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the Hopkins family was the wide extent of their collective talents and experiences. As a result, their collection touches on numerous historical subjects, including the Episcopal Church, the insurance business in California, shipping, Vermont in the 19th century, California during and after the Gold Rush, gothic architecture, classical and religious music, education, and family life during the 19th century. Spanning 1800 to 1932, and comprising four linear feet of material, the collection contains a huge variety of material, including correspondence, documents, printed matter, drawings, manuscript and printed music, photographs, broadsides, pamphlets, monographs, periodicals, and maps.

The Correspondence series contains approximately 400 incoming and outgoing letters, spanning 1824 to 1932, with the bulk concentrated in the years between 1830 and 1890. Caspar Hopkins contributed the largest number of letters to the collection, writing approximately 25%; followed by his brother, John, Jr., (15%); his mother, Melusina (10%); his wife, Almira (5%), and his father, John, Sr., (5%). Caspar wrote frequent letters to his wife and family, and they document many stages of his life, such as his 1849 voyage to California via Mexico and his participation in the Gold Rush as a speculator and businessman, his exploration of the Umpqua River in southern Oregon in the early 1850s, and his career as president of the California Insurance Company in the 1860s through the 1880s. His Gold Rush letters in particular contain incisive comments on the miners he encountered and on their way of life. On October 14, 1850, he wrote a letter to "Friend Clarke," describing frontier conditions, the attitudes of settlers, and the habits of Native Americans in the Klamath River Valley. Many letters also discuss religious and intellectual matters, two areas of interest for Caspar.

Bishop John H. Hopkins' letters span 1831-1866 and contain a great deal of advice to Caspar, as well as his thoughts on religious matters, the Civil War, family affairs, and many other topics. In a few early letters written to Caspar when he was a young man, John described his views on the raising of children and gave advice on being successful (December 11, 1850); he lamented Caspar's lack of interest in the ministry as a career (February 20, 1851). Other letters by the bishop touch on the satisfaction of worship (August 17, 1854), contain pro-South speculation as to the causes of the Civil War (May 28, 1861), and mention his upcoming golden wedding anniversary with Melusina (March 10, 1865). In a letter of August 10, 1866, John addressed Caspar's growing skepticism toward organized religion, urging him to return to the church "to which you and your dear family rightfully belong," despite its "earthly" defects. John Henry Hopkins, Jr., wrote several dozen letters, primarily concerning his experience as a member of the clergy, touching often on pedagogical subjects which ranged from arguments on why Lincoln was a bad president to theological discourses, some even written in Latin. On February 25, 1844, he wrote a particularly good description of student life at the University of Vermont, and bemoaned the "inveterate practice of loafing into each other's rooms in study hours" and "lolling on each other's beds." The Hopkins women are also well-represented among the letter-writers. Melusina Mueller Hopkins, the wife of Bishop Hopkins, wrote numerous letters to Caspar, which include biographical information about Caspar's siblings and father, as well as other family news. Others female writers include Amelia Muller (Melusina's sister), and Caspar's sisters Caroline Hopkins Canfield and Matilda Hopkins Camp.

The Bishop Hopkins' Sermons and Pastoral Letters series contains ten manuscript sermons (including one fragment), two printed sermons, and two printed pastoral letters. The manuscript items note the various dates on which Hopkins read them before his congregation; he frequently performed them multiple times between 1824 and 1862. The printed sermons and pastoral letters all date to the period of 1850-1855. They touch on numerous religious and scriptural themes and shed light on the Episcopal Church in Vermont and Hopkins' own views on morality, the meaning of life, and the role of the church. Many additional items written by Hopkins are housed in the Book Division, and listed under "Additional Descriptive Data."

The Caspar Hopkins' Writings and Documents series contains one linear foot of material, dating from Hopkins' college years (1845-1847) to the end of his life in the 1890s. Containing both manuscript and printed items, it includes four subseries. The General Writings subseries consists of 24 items, including essays that Hopkins wrote for classes at the University of Vermont, several plays, and articles that he wrote on topics as diverse as divorce law, happiness, American government, and the insurance agency. The second subseries, Berkeley Club Writings, contains 16 manuscript essays that Hopkins wrote between 1873 and 1889 for presentation to the social and intellectual organization, the Berkeley Club. They pertain to such topic as evolution, agnosticism, religion in public schools, and marriage and divorce. The Autobiography subseries consists of three copies of Hopkins' self-published biography, written in 1889, which provides biographical information and insightful commentary on himself and various other members of the Hopkins family. The final subseries, Documents, includes three documents relating to Caspar Hopkins dated between 1873 and 1893: a publishing contract, a printed petition, and a will.

The Printed Matter and Clippings series contains miscellaneous printed items related to or collected by members of the Hopkins family, dating ca. 1850 to ca. 1940. The series comprises printed playbills and concert programs, newspaper articles relating to members of the family, and other printed material. It also includes an undated phrenology chart for Caspar Hopkins. Two printed broadsides in this series are housed in the Graphics Division. The Genealogy series contains manuscript and printed information on various lines of the Hopkins family, gathered primarily in the early 20th-century.

The Music series includes manuscript and printed music played or written by various members of the Hopkins family. Among the many items of interest are a volume of music written by Bishop John Hopkins; a set of scores written and copied by Caspar Hopkins while in California, 1861-1865; and two ca. 1800 books of German songs belonging to the sisters of Melusina Mueller, Charlotte and Theresa.

The Art series contains the drawings, sketches, watercolors, and hand-colored botanical paintings produced by Bishop John Hopkins, his mother (Elizabeth Fitzackerly), and his children. Included are six volumes of drawings and watercolors by the bishop, which depict scenes he encountered while traveling in upstate New York in 1825, gothic churches, landscapes, and human hands. Of particular note are nineteen large plates from Hopkins' 1834 Vermont Flower Book, nine of which his children hand-painted, as well as a letter from William Bayard Hopkins, laid into the volume, describing their habit of working together around the dining room table. Also of interest are botanical paintings by Hopkins' mother, Elizabeth Fitzackerly, dating to the late 18th- or early 19th-century.

The Photographs and Maps series includes approximately 50 photographs of various members of the Hopkins family, including John Hopkins, Sr.; Melusina Hopkins; Caspar Hopkins; John Henry Hopkins; Jr.; Frances (Hopkins) Hinckley; William Bayard Hopkins; and various family groups, landmarks, and homes. Formats include cartes de visite, cabinet cards, tintypes, and a glass plate positive. Also present are two large views of San Francisco shortly after the destruction of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The collection also includes three maps, housed in the Map Division. They include an 1849 sketch of San Francisco by Caspar Hopkins; a map of Penobscot County, Maine (ca. 1900); and one of the Union Pacific Railroad and its rail connections (1872).
