Masters-Taylor-Wilbur papers, 1796-1857

The Masters-Taylor-Wilbur papers are the personal and business letters of an extended family in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. Of special interest are a group of letters between former slave Matthew Matthews and Mary F. Spence (the owner of his six children), and between Francis Markoe, Jr., and Jeremiah Wilbur, who helped Matthews purchase his children's freedom.

The Masters-Taylor-Wilbur papers (618 items) consist of 570 letters, 9 legal documents, and 39 financial records (1796-1850). The vast majority of the letters are family correspondence written by Thomas Masters and two of his daughters, Martha [Mrs. Henry W. Taylor] and Sarah [Mrs. Jeremiah Wilbur], between 1824 and 1850. The collection also includes letters written by his wife Isabella, his daughter Anna, his sons Samuel and Francis, and his sons-in-law, Jeremiah Wilbur and Henry W. Taylor. Many of the letters are between family members living in New York City, where Thomas Masters ran his mercantile business and Canandaigua, New York; Marshall, Michigan; Philadelphia; and Mt. Morris, New York. Several are joint letters with notes from two or more family members. The letters are rich in details of family life: illnesses, disease, and cures are much discussed, as are family weddings, and travel. Though dominated by family news, the family occasionally discussed politics, religion, temperance, and other religious-inspired social reform issues.

The earliest letters in the collection pertain to the Wilbur family from 1811 to 1818 (32 letters). These consist of letters from Backus Wilbur in Princeton and Newark, New Jersey, to his brother Marcus Wilbur in New York City, describing Backus’ schooling, religious training, and life at school. Included in one letter is an account of a food fight that escalated to a near riot (February 6, 1812).

Of special interest are 12 letters and two enclosures documenting the attempt of Francis Markoe, Jr., and Jeremiah Wilbur to help former slave Matthew Matthews of Washington, D.C., purchase his six children (January-September 1835). Markoe and Wilbur outlined strategies regarding the best use of the available money to maximize the purchase of the highest number of children in the shortest possible time. Also included are two letters to Matthews, one from Mrs. Mary F. Spence, informing him that she may be forced to sell his children at public auction, and the other from Luke Johnson of Dumfries, Virginia, a black slave who loaned him money toward the purchase of one of the children. Enclosed with the letters are copies of bills of sale for two of the children.

In addition to the family papers are 135 business letters, 35 receipts, four invoices, and nine legal documents that relate to the mercantile affairs of Thomas Masters, Francis Markoe, and their firms of Markoe & Masters, and Masters & Markoe in New York City and Philadelphia (1796-1847). These business papers give some insight into the New York and European financial markets and the economic climate of the time.

Nathaniel Stacy papers, 1803-1867

The Nathaniel Stacy papers include correspondence, documents, sermons, and other materials which relate to the personal and professional life of Mr. Stacy, a Universalist preacher.

The Nathaniel Stacy papers include eight boxes of material relating to every aspect of the personal and professional life of a Universalist preacher operating in the hot bed of the Second Great Awakening, the Burnt-Over District of New York. Boxes 1 through 4 contain correspondence arranged chronologically, 1803-1867, followed by undated correspondence arranged alphabetically by author. Box 5 contains Stacy's preaching log, listing date, place and text taken for sermons given between 1803 and 1864, sometimes with additional notes concerning funerals or other special occasions. Box 6 contains 30 numbered lectures given by Stacy in Ann Arbor in 1837 and 1838. Only the first of these is specifically dated. They are filed in numerical order with text taken noted on the folder. Boxes 7 and 8 contain material arranged topically, filed alphabetically by folder title. The Box-Folder listing provides detail. Included in these boxes are Stacy's diaries, with an unbroken run from 1835 through 1868 and scattered earlier and undated fragments, and 18 folders of sermons arranged by text. The bulk of the collection centers around Stacy and the members of his immediate family, and includes some materials generated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by his grandchildren or great-grandchildren, the Smiths of Corry, Pa. The unidentified photographs are probably of these family members.

The Stacy collection is a rich resource for historians of the Universalist Church. Stacy was part of what might be called a second generation of American Universalist preachers, taught by Hosea Ballou and influenced by other members of the General Convention of Universalists of the New England States and Others. He was among the first to preach the doctrine of universal salvation in New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, and in each state he founded a number of local societies and regional associations. Stacy's papers vividly document the hardships involved in the life of an itinerant preacher of an unpopular doctrine. The financial difficulties inherent in such a career are reflected in his appeals to various Societies for whom he preached to honor their subscriptions or allow him to leave, and in letters from other struggling preachers bemoaning their meager earnings or looking for a better place; they are implicit in all his financial juggling and in schemes for supplementing his income, ranging from the disastrous reprinting of Marie Hubers's The State of Souls Separated From Their Bodies (1:46) to an ill-fated speculation in cheese (3:91). The individual societies for whom Stacy preached are variously documented in 8:35-39. For example, materials concerning the Society in Hamilton are unfortunately sparse, consisting of one letter of appeal from Stacy and a draft report to the Western Association of Universalists. The Society in Columbus is better documented, with a constitution and list of members dated 1834 and a record of church proceedings from 1834 to 1847 as well as a number of Stacy's accounts and subscription lists. The run of undated sermons (8:18-35) is useful for study of Universalist doctrine, as are the dated occasional sermons which may be found in the card catalog under Stacy's name. Running throughout the correspondence is a considerable debate on the subject of universal salvation versus endless misery, and these debates are echoed and extended in Stacy's diaries and Memoirs.

Stacy's ministry in New York occurred during one of the most volatile periods in the state's history. The collection documents the intense interest in religion in general and the willingness to question established doctrine which characterized the Burnt-Over District during this period. Letters such as one dated January 1, 1819 (1:37) offer moving descriptions of the spiritual hunger and emotional turmoil which stirred many, although a counterbalance is offered in such letters as the one dated January 20, 1828 (2:9) which offers a rationalistic discussion of the illogical nature of such biblical imagery as that of armies of angels in heaven. A number of Stacy's correspondents describe protracted religious meetings and local revivals (indexed under Revivals; and Enthusiasm). Universalist ministers generally disapproved of the techniques of the evangelical churches, and Stacy avidly collected stories of people driven to madness, infanticide, and suicide by Calvinism (1:59; 3:78,92). Yet it is also clear, as one fellow minister pointed out to Stacy, that the Universalist Church benefited both by the interest in religion stirred up by the revivals and by the renewed commitment of the enlightened who found such meeting objectionable (3:11) A letter from a niece turned Mormon requests Stacy to "give me the Names of your Anchestors as far back as you can gain eny knowledge and also give me the Names of your Children that are dead that I may have them to be handed down from generation to generation after me" (4:38). In another interesting series of letters, Stacy acts as advocate for an elderly neighbor, a former Shaker who had been expelled from their community, and who was seeking their support (see subject index under Shakers).

In Michigan and Ann Arbor, Stacy experienced the region's transition from territory to state and the hard times following the Panic of 1837. His correspondence from this period, and in particular his diaries, which he began to keep regularly upon his removal to Michigan, offer a window onto life in a frontier town. Although his daily entries are seldom lengthy, the cumulative effect of the diaries is to provide a rich picture of Stacy's social and economic setting and, as a side benefit, of his very appealing personality.

Those interested in Freemasonry and the Antimasonic excitement which played such an important role in determining Stacy's actions will find materials of interest in the collection. Two examples of Antimasonic rhetoric are found in letters dating from 1829, written by a kinswoman who exhorted Stacy to divest himself of the "vile robes" of the "base ferternity," while listing the ghastly crimes committed by Masons (2:15,17). Clippings concerning his Masonic affiliation and two speeches delivered in lodges are included in 8:14. Also of interest are two series of legal materials: one concerning the estate of David Curtis, founder of Columbus, Pa., for which Stacy acted as executor (7:1), and one concerning the legal separation of Stacy's niece, Rhoda Porter Thompson from her second husband (8:41). Each set of documents includes an inventory of the principal's household goods. Stacy's register of marriages (8:13) and his log of sermons, which often gives some detail about those at whose funerals he preached (5), include useful material for genealogists. The subject index includes topics covered in less detail in the papers, such as Stacy's chaplaincy during the second campaign at Sackett's Harbor in the War of 1812, and his involvement in various Temperance groups.

Nelson W. Winton diary, 1843-1847

Nelson W. Winton kept this diary between 1843 and 1847, at the ages of 14 to 17, while living with his aunt and uncle (a physician) in Havana, Chemung County, New York. Winton wrote about his attendance at district and select schools at Havana, taught by Rufus Burr and James H. Gage, and at the Owego Academy. He attended Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian religious meetings, as well as temperance gatherings. Winton wrote regularly about helping with labor, such as killing and butchering cows and pigs, and chopping wood. He documented leisure activities, such as sleighing, skating, sledding, attending picnics and concerts, spending time in nature with his friends, interacting with young women, and other activities. On multiple occasions, he traveled to Geneva, Oswego, Syracuse, Binghamton, and other areas in New York State. Winton regularly recorded information about events that took place on holidays, including George Washington's Birthday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year. At the end of the diary (pages 106-108, 118-157), Nelson Winton copied his compositions and speeches on subjects such as a dream, Greek and Roman history, pin making, the deleterious effect of reading novels, slavery, and other topics.

This self-adhering scrapbook contains a blend of illustrated and non-illustrated clippings from various printed sources (newspapers, periodicals, books, etc.), originating mostly from New England in the 1860s-1890s. Topics include religion, politics (American and British), the assassination of U.S. President James A. Garfield (1831-1881), health and wellness, eulogies, and other articles. The volume is bears the printed manufacturers label "Mark Twain's Scrap Book Registered April 23rd. 1878 . . . Published by Slote, Woodman & Co."

This self-adhering scrapbook contains a blend of illustrated and non-illustrated clippings from various printed sources (newspapers, periodicals, books, etc.), originating mostly from New England in the 1860s-1890s. Topics include religion, politics (American and British), the assassination of U.S. President James A. Garfield (1831-1881), health and wellness, eulogies, and other articles. A selection of topics represented in the scrapbook include:
  • Material relating to religion (primarily Christianity, but also Islam, Mormonism, etc.). Some clippings are derogatory towards non-Christian groups or peoples. Enclosed is an issue of Our Prison Missionary (Vol. II, Dec. 1890, no.2), a publication from the Christian Aid Association "devoted to Christian work in penal institutions." Hymns, religious poetry, baptism, and Martin Luther's will (page 56) are also present.
  • Politically related clippings include stories about the U.S. Congress and senators, the British House of Parliament, Queen Victoria, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and General Grant's illness. Many of the volume's pages are dedicated to the assassination of President James A Garfield, with updates on the President's health after he was shot (page 33). Additional clippings with messages from world leaders expressing their sympathies, information about Vice President Chester A. Arthur, and the background of President Garfield's assassin Charles J. Guiteau.
  • Health and wellness-related content ranges from life advice, the dangers of children eating snow, mental health, vaccination, and more. An issue of the Land of Hope Review includes a brief article warning "juveniles" of the danger of smoking tobacco.
  • Eulogies for President Garfield, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and other "In Memoriam" articles and hymns are spread throughout the volume. A music sheet of a song called "Rest, Sweetly Rest" (credited to a publication called The Watchword is noted as being suitable for the death of a scholar.

An advertisement for the scrapbook itself includes information and prices about other variations of "Mark Twain's Self Adhering Scrap Book," such as a druggists' prescription book, a child's scrapbook, and a pocket scrapbook.

Norton Strange Townshend family papers, 1807-1995

The Norton Strange Townshend Family papers include correspondence, diaries, essays, lectures, printed matter, clippings, financial and legal papers, photographs, daguerreotypes, ephemera, realia, maps, and books belonging to the Townshend and Dodge families, who were connected by the marriage of Margaret Wing (granddaughter of Norton Townshend) and Homer Levi Dodge (grandson of Levi Dodge) in 1917. Much of the collection documents the life and career of politician and agricultural educator Norton Strange Townshend, including his political, educational, and social reform activities.

The Norton Strange Townshend Family Papers consist of 20.5 linear feet of manuscripts, 66 cased photographs, 3 linear feet of paper photographs, 8 cubic feet of photographic slides, and 7 cubic feet of realia, arranged into 13 series. For more detail, see scope and content notes, below.

The Correspondence series (Boxes 1-10) contains all the collection’s letters, postcards, and telegrams (with the exception of official military correspondence, financial correspondence, and genealogy correspondence, which are under "Topical Files," "Financial Correspondence," and "Genealogical Correspondence," respectively). Correspondence spans the years 1827-1989 and makes up around one quarter of the collection. It is subdivided by family into the "Townshend Subseries" and "Dodge Subseries," and arranged chronologically, with undated items at the end. The series contains correspondence to and from prominent Ohio politicians, such as Salmon P. Chase; who wrote 34 letters to Townshend; William Medill; Rutherford B. Hayes; and notable agricultural educators, including James Sullivant and John Klippart. Correspondence among family members is also voluminous, and documents a wide variety of issues during the mid-19th to early-20th centuries, including social and family life, courtship, women’s work and viewpoints, travel, and attitudes toward education. The Joel Townshend papers series (Box 10) brings together documents by and related to Norton Townshend’s father, Joel Townshend (1780-1864). It includes a few religious writings, as well as financial and legal documents that shed light on the family’s life in Northamptonshire, England, and Ohio. Most items date from 1810 to 1830, with the exception of a biography of Townshend written in the 1930s or 1940s by his great-grandson, H. Percy Boynton.

The Norton S. Townshend papers series (Boxes 10-26) is the largest series in the collection and contains diaries, published and unpublished writings, printed materials, clippings, broadsides, biographical materials, and other items relating to nearly every facet of Townshend’s adult life. These materials document Townshend’s political involvement, particularly in local and national antislavery, in agricultural movements, and in the U.S. House of Representatives. The series also includes papers about his educational career, family life, Civil War service, and religious views and work. Townshend frequently worked and reworked his ideas on paper, and both his published and unpublished writings are a rich source of intellectual and reform history. Townshend was also an inveterate collector and preserver of interesting items, including materials relating to northern Ohio’s Liberty Party, his admission tickets to medical courses and the World Anti-Slavery Convention, an application to the Ohio State Asylum for the Education of Idiotic and Imbecile Youth, of which he was a trustee, and dozens of fliers and handbills for lectures given by himself and others.

The Margaret Bailey Townshend papers series (Boxes 26-27) is comprised of two diaries, a rich autobiographical writing entitled "Genealogy," describing her childhood and education, a small number of clippings, and materials relating to her education and career as a teacher in Illinois and Ohio in the 1850s. Many items in the Realia series (below) also relate to Margaret Bailey Townshend.

The Other Townshend family members’ papers series (Boxes 28-30) contains materials relating mainly to Townshend’s children and their spouses, but also includes James B. Wood (Townshend’s father-in-law), Harriet Wood Townshend (Townshend’s first wife), Margaret Wing Dodge (Townshend’s granddaughter), and several other relatives. The bulk of this series is made up of their writings, which are autobiographical, religious, and cultural in subject. Also of interest is biographical information on family members, including articles on Townshend’s children, who were early students of Ohio State University, and a number of obituaries of these family members.

The Dodge family papers series (Boxes 30-34) consists of materials produced and collected by the Dodges of upstate New York, from 1839 to approximately 1970, and documenting their family life, travels, hobbies (in particular the outdoors and canoeing), financial and legal transactions, and civic engagement. Incorporated are some writings by various family members, including Levi R. Dodge, F. Isabella (Donaghue) Dodge, Homer Dodge, and family friend Lydia Sayer Hasbrouck; topical files, the bulk of which are 20th century; biographical materials such as obituaries and clippings; and periodicals on topics of interest to the Dodges.

The Genealogical research series (Boxes 35-37) reflects the family’s interest in its own history and consists of correspondence, family trees, historical essays, as well as commercially produced family histories for some lines. The materials reflect a particular interest in finding links between various family members and such prominent figures as the Townshends of Raynham Hall, the Green family of Vermont, and General Grenville Dodge. This series pertains mainly to the 20th century and is arranged by family, except for the correspondence, which is arranged chronologically.

The Collection-related materials series is made up of documents and articles that shed light on the outreach efforts made on behalf of the collection, particularly for the Easterly items, prior to their accessioning by the William L. Clements Library. The series is comprised of fliers, museum publicity materials, and articles on exhibits. Materials date from the late 20th century, particularly the 1990s.

The Books series contains three items that are housed with the collection: Sermons on Various Subjects by the Late Rev. Thomas Strange, Kilsby, Northamptonshire, with Some Memoirs of His Life (1807); the Townshend Family Bible (with manuscript notes on births, deaths and marriages); and Robert W. McCormick’s 1988 self-published biography of Townshend: Norton S. Townshend, M.D. Antislavery Politician and Agricultural Educator. The rest of the books, including books from the personal libraries of Norton Townshend, Joel Townshend, Margaret Bailey Townshend, and the Dodge family, are housed in the Book Division of the Clements Library; for the list of titles, search for "M-3437" in the University of Michigan's library catalog.

The Visual materials series is arranged by type of item and then by subject. This includes daguerreotypes by prominent daguerreotypist Thomas M. Easterly, other photographs, drawings/prints, and maps. The materials range from the 1840s to the 1970s. See also Realia series below.

The Realia series contains approximately 8 linear feet of objects, including items from the childhood and teaching career of Margaret Bailey Townshend, intricate hairwork jewelry and a hair wreath made with the locks of at least 16 family members, geological materials and fossils collected by Norton Townshend and possibly Thomas Easterly, and other three-dimensional objects such as a glass vial for medicine, ribbons from the Ohio State Fair, and decorative objects. Also noteworthy are a number of paper objects, such as Civil War era chromolithograph animal toys, a Japanese paper lantern, and an alphabet game for children.

The Dodge Photographic Slides series includes eight cubic feet of photographic slides, totaling approximately 22,000 slides, attributed to Homer L. Dodge. They document travels around the southwest United States and to countries such as Japan, Canada and Sweden.

The Miscellaneous series contains envelopes without accompanying letters, blank letterhead, and a binder of transcriptions of select letters from Harriet Wood Townshend to Sarah Wood Keffer.

This collection is made up of three letters from Great Lakes commercial shipowner, sailor, and farmer Richard O. The contents of the letters are as follows:

1858 October 25. Letter from Orselas Evans, Grand Traverse, to Thomas J. Evans and Mary E. Evans. 6 pages. Written on Orselas' 33rd birthday, giving updates on his brothers Marcius and George. Orselas sailed with George for much the summer, before George decided to take a canoe south to Grand Haven. Despite warnings from Marcius and Orselas, George did not stay along the shoreline and the last heard of him was his safe arrival at the Fox Islands (where George was apparently working as a fisherman at $20/month). Since his parents' last visit, Orselas moved to the Point near Mulletts Mill Stream and co-purchased a 12-ton vessel with Dr. Darwin Cushman. After about a month, he heard that the Mormons were driven off Beaver Island, so Orselas bought a small farm (40 acres) for $200--already cleared, fenced, and "in good Crops." Father Tyrell and George stayed on the island with Orselas and family over the winter. Despite putting great effort into farming, he found that very little would grow. Three acres of oats and 10 acres of meadow land were the only positive results, and so he became discouraged. He sold 20 acres to buy a 30-ton Schooner. Two sailing trips proved successful and so the family decided to move back to the Point. The Evanses moved to Beaver Harbor (about a mile from the farm).

The bulk of the October 25, 1858, letter is Orselas Evans' narrative of political and election strife on Beaver Island related to the spring elections. He informed his parents that he held multiple township offices, including Justice of the Peace, clerk, highway commissioner, school director, and undersheriff, and was "also a deadly enemy to Mormons and everything pertaing to Mormonism and as there was a number of old Mormons left upon the Island I had a good number of enimies and them too that were seeking to Get rid of me in some manner." As Town Clerk and on the Township Board, Orselas decided a question related to ballot counts in the spring election—that all ballots without a full name, i.e. "T. G. Evans instead of Thomas G. Evans," were to be discarded. In "doing this our party gained the election and I was nearly mobbed at the time." A Detroit lawyer was consulted, and it was determined that Orselas was correct in his decision. About a month later, one or more persons set fire to "a barn belonging to an old Mormon by the name of Camel," and Orselas with four others were arrested and brought before the magistrate. At the courthouse were "a large collection of Mormons Bogus Gentiles all my enimies and but few of Friends." Orselas wished for a trial, as he was innocent. The plaintiff had no evidence, and they were discharged.

And "then was the time I had ought to have smelt the cat and left but I am no coward in Such a place. I was speaking with the Justice Just outside the Door of the court room and the row commencd inside upon one of the others of my Party I went to the door ^to try to Get in to rescue him but the door was jamed full as well as the room inside with the cursed crew and determind ^to mob us in good earnest I did not wait long before my comrade (by Georges help) who happened to inside) got Clear and came headlong out of the door with ^a murderous villian close behind him with a bowie knife drawn to stab him. I stood ready and gave him a wipe one side of the head which laid him Sprauling and Gave my comrade time to Get away which did and the other three as fast as their legs could carry them. the moment I struck the villian one fellow drew a large Pistol from his Pocket and in his hurry only half cocked it and snapped it within six feet of my Breast the cap did not go or I should be now pening these lines to you two or three drawing revolvers at the same time ^I left and had not got many yards they fired two or three shots after me but none hit I kept secreted untill night when by the assistance of my friends I Got my Family on Board of my vessel and having a fair wind arrived in Grand Traverse on my old place by four Oclock the next day, after getting my Family settled comfortably I armed myself and vesel and started back determined to have war if they wanted war but when I got there the most of the damened vagabonds had absconded and the remainder were quiet enough so all I had to do was to pick up some Property I had left behind and sail back. I have been back a number of times since but No trouble I still own twenty acres of land there which I shall dispose of as soon as possible and that will probably end my Beaver Island adventures."

Orselas then informed his parents of the death of his sister-in-law "Harry" [i.e. Harriet Tyrell Evans] after a ten-day sickness. His brothers were so heartbroken that they asked Orselas to relate the event. Despite diligent care from Dr. Cushman, she had erysipelas which settled in her head and was so severe that it could not be helped. Lamented that Marcius and Harriet had just made plans for the future and had two "bright children." Orselas was deeply impacted, as on returning from a voyage found her already deceased and buried. Dr. Cushman said she was insensible and had no pain. On Marcius' and Harriet's children: "Marcius has Gave Selina out untill she arrives at the age of eighteen She has got a most exelent place seems quite contented Poor creature she is not old enough to realize her ^loss. Poor little Tyrrell Evans Marcius ^keeps him with him and would not Part with him for all chrisendom he is as fine a little manly fellow as I ever saw." Marcius will be staying with Orselas over the winter, has co-purchased a vessel with him, and will likely stay over the summer. Times are hard there and elsewhere but are improving. Hopes that his parents will utilize their services for moving, which will be "cheap as any other firm." Now has four girls and one boy, "all well plenty to eat."

1859 January 3. Letter from Orselas Evans, Grand Traverse Bay, to Thomas J. Evans and [Mary E. Evans], Austerlitz P.O., Plainfield, Michigan. 3 pages, plus a 1-page addition by Marcius Evans. 4 pages total. Orselas received their last communication. They brought in the New Year with good spirits, though he still had not heard from "prodigal Son George." If his parents haven't heard from George, Orselas expects that he is on Fox or Beaver Island—and also suspects that George may be there on account of his attraction to a "young female who bye the bye George use to stick pretty Close to when he lived with us." Wishes the best for his parents with their land speculation but cannot himself invest as he has "so many Irons in the fire." The vessel co-owned with Marcius needs $150-$200 worth of repairs, a dock needs to be built for $50-75, and road work will cost $25, not to mention the food and clothing of his family of three adults and five children. Marcius is partnering with him and the expectation is that the 30-ton vessel will be worth $450 and the finished dock $500. Next season's business is expected to be good as they expect a "rush of settlers" given the lands that came into the market last August. Mr. Hover built a sawmill on "the old Captain Mullets creek" and is now building a tannery and grist mill. This settlement has 19 families, all but four are squatters—who "are off the Indian reserve and have deeds of their lands – but we are all safe providing we have the money when these land shall come into market . . . this coming Spring." Mr. Barns who had been editor of the Grand River Enquirer is registrar of the land office at the head of West Bay, Traverse City. "I cannot imagine how could think that we could ever move out of Grand Traverse Why . . . it is by all adds the best and healthiest country in the western world . . . and for my part I shall look no further I am contented and perfectly satisfied." Is sending copies of the Grand Traverse Herald, now in its infancy but it will be a blessing. In the margin, Orselas gave his parents the names and the next birthdays of his children: Evelyn Emily (11 years old), Orselas (7 years old on February 6), Alice (5 years old on June 5), Adeline (3 years old on June 12), and Adelaide (1 year old on February 26).

Orselas addressed a page to his brother Thomas R. Evans, wishing him success with his occupation of "performing upon the violin and also in writing musick." Believes that with "steady Persevereance" he will become noted in the Science Art of musick." Hopes he will visit next spring and fall in love with the area. "People here are full of danceing and the time is not far distant when a good musician will make money here." Or, come visit this winter—he could travel with the mail carrier. Wishes to give one piece of advice as his older brother: "Taste not of intoxicating Drinks. My Dear Brother Experience that Greatest of School Teachers has Taught me to my sorrow the heavy Penalty that all who use Alchoholick drinks forfeit in the shape of lost energy loss of character Pains. misery in every form and shape. Oh my Brother Taste it not."

The final page of this letter was written by Marcius A. Evans to his parents, updating them on his children. Selina is with a family who are "very morral upright honest and industrious, and have but one Child which is an infant, and they are in good circumstances." "Tyrrell, I have engaged board with a Mrs. Hitchcock a fine motherly midle aged Lady, till spring" and then likely take him to his grandparents on the Evans side. Have you received any copies of the Grand Traverse Herald? "Father there is one thing that they are very much in want of in this country, that is a good edge tool maker, there is not a good axe in the country and a great quantity of timber to be disposed of."

1869 March 31. Letter from Richard O. Evans [i.e. Orselas Evans], Peshtigo, [Wisconsin], to Thomas J. Evans and [Mary E. Evans]. 3 pages. While he has been neglectful in correspondence, they think often of their parents and long to see them. Have had a very good winter for logging, which has made for "lively times." The logging season is over and preparations are being made for the spring. Has stayed at home over the winter on account of "Knoxys health" [i.e. Orselas' wife Clarissa Knox Tyrell Evans]. "Six weeks ago yesterday she gave birth to 10lb baby boy named U.S. Grant Evans." "this makes eleven children is it not time to stop." Evelyn taught the winter term at Cedar River, Michigan; they hope she will teach in the summer, but Orselas has secured her a position there so she can be close to home. Selina is attending school in Traverse City but will probably come home and stay. Marcius and Richard O. [Orselas] joined the "Good Templars." Praises the "great Giver of all good" for saving their children from "the destroyer," intoxicants. Marcius is going to Oconto when the ice is out, where he will work for the summer. They hear from New York every week and received clothing as a Christmas present—which could not be purchased in Wisconsin for less than $250. Gratitude for all they have done for Evelyn and wish to do for Alice. Hopes that brother Thomas too "will learn Wisdom and cast the Demon from him" [i.e. stop drinking alcoholic beverages].

A later sheet of paper is included with the collection, on which one of the Evans children wrote the birth and death dates of their parents Richard Orselas Evans and Clarissa K. Evans, the birth dates of seven of the Evans' children, and the marriage date of Eunice Evans (August 17, 1892).

This 242-page diary documents the daily life of Sophia "Sofa" Miller, of Albion, Michigan, from 1875 to 1876. A devout Baptist, Miller recorded her attendance at various church services and meetings, her personal religious thoughts, and copies of hymns. She also chronicled the weather, household chores, and social activities.

This 242-page diary documents the daily life of Sophia "Sofa" Miller, of Albion, Michigan, from 1875 to 1876. She frequently recorded weather observations, details about her sewing work, and social calls received and made. As a devout Baptist, much of her social life centered on attending church services, prayer meetings, and choir practices. Miller was a teacher for Sabbath School, secretary of the Albion Baptist Women's Missionary Circle, and Vice Grand for the local Rebekah's lodge. Miller's relatives were also members of the Good Templar Society for temperance.

Miller copied several letters into the diary, including two to The Herald and Torchlight (a Baptist newspaper published in Kalamazoo). She also copied a number of hymns, including "Take My Life and Let It Be" and "I am Trusting, Wholly Trusting." Major events noted include house remodeling, visiting boarders, and Miller's niece, Altha, coming to live in her house while attending Albion College. Several entries concern rumored affairs, including one involving Miller's husband. The last page of the diary shows a recipe for chocolate cake.

He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity (i.e. he was intoxicated when committing the murder), but the jury convicted him and he was sentenced to death. These papers appear to have been compiled by Bergin's defense counsel during the process of seeking a retrial in August 1877.

The collection's 18 affidavits appear to be manuscript forms for Bergin's defense to use in arguing for a retrial. They include several different handwritten forms produced by a clerk. With only three exceptions, the affidavits do not identify a particular individual, leaving blanks for their name and for the date of the sworn statement. Despite their incomplete state, some of these were still signed and stamped by a notary. The incomplete forms include duplicate text focused on different arguments for a retrial. For example, six of the affidavits discredit Sarah Rose as a witness; several of them are sworn statements by jurors that they had already formed their opinions of the case before the trial; and others claim the jurors were allowed to separate into their own boarding houses or mingle with crowds of people without police supervision.

Thomas Barclay's Mexican War journal covers the entire period of his service in the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry. This journal gives an intimate, common soldiers' view of the Mexican War, opinions of his superior officers, camp life, the Mexican citizenry (referred to as "greasers"), and the Mexican landscape.

The original manuscript of the journal has been lost, and it is known to exist only in the form of a typescript, prepared some time early in the twentieth century.

The Allinson journal documents Allinson's thoughts on his spirituality and marriage as well as events within the New Jersey Quaker Church, including meetings with Native Americans.

William Allinson's journal spans more than a decade of his adult life, and includes mature reflections on both personal and spiritual matters. Closely written and very dense at over 270 pages long, the journal is an emotional and spiritual barometer of a man driven by as many disappointments as joys in his family circle, and even greater disappointments in his own soul. Allinson apparently intended to keep the journal to provide a marker of his spiritual development and as a means of contemplating his growth. Over the course of twelve years he struggled with whether his life could be worthy of recording, and whether a record of his spiritual progress could ever prove useful. Ultimately, he concluded that one day his diary would most likely to be consigned to the fire.

Seldom discussing worldly matters such as politics or the economy, Allinson examines instead a range of subjects of personal and religious interest from witnessing the crescentic shadows cast by plants during a total solar eclipse to witnessing a group of rowdy boys at meeting. Devout and deeply involved in the Society of Friends, he regularly recorded news of the Burlington Meeting and other meetings he attended as minister, elder, and visitor, as well as news of his family and local community, including disciplinary actions, laodiceanism, weddings, and committee meetings. Throughout, he displays a quintessentially Quaker understanding of the World, of conflict and its resolution, reflecting a deeply held and emotionally powerful attachment to the Society, his family, and community. Allinson was a contemporary and friend of important Quaker figures such as Jesse Kersey, George Dillwyn, Martha Routh, Ann Mifflin, Isaac Bonsall, and Elias Hicks, who appear throughout the journal.

The central point of interest in Allinson's journal, however, is a complex and finely detailed struggle with both sexual and spiritual self-discipline. At times, he indulges in the painful ruminations of a middle aged man on his seemingly eternal bachelorhood, posing a series of Quaker queries to himself: "What am I waiting for?" he asked: "Answer. For an Evidence in my own Mind that it will be right to make an Effort to change my condition, & for some satisfactory degree of Light that such procedure is approbated by Him" (1807 April 4). During the twelve years covered in the journal, Allinson found little peace within himself on spiritual issues. He never married, and did his best to deflect the pains of seeing his brothers seemingly stray from the Quaker path.

Allinson's involvement in Indian affairs stands out for note among other important issues appearing in the journal. As a member of the Committee of Indian Affairs of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (and despite doubting his own preparedness for such a role), Allinson was involved in the procurement of over 500 acres of land in August, 1808, on behalf of the Cattaraugus Indians, and he visited them in September and October, 1809. Of greater interest was his visit with the famed Stockbridge Indian "intercultural broker," Hendrick Aupaumut, while he was imprisoned for debt. Allinson discovered Aupaumut to be "pleasant & conversable" (1805 March 10), even while in prison. After paying Aupaumut's debts and having him released, Allinson bought him a new suit of clothes (in which, he noted approvingly, Aupaumut "prefer[ed] utility to shew"; 1805 March 11). Allinson discusses two stories told to him by Aupaumut, one concerning an "Embassy" that Aupaumut and other Indians had made to western Indians -- probably Stockbridge -- "with design to renew the League of Friendship & promote their acceptance of the Christian Religion -- Improvemt in Civilization &c." The Indians accepted Aupaumut's ministry, and gave him three ears of corn to return with, to have them planted and tended "by their choisest & best young women." Aupaumut also discussed the visions and conversion experiences of two Indians, one Shawnee, the other Seneca.
