The University of Michigan News and Information Services functions as the university's media relations office. It disseminates information and images about university programs, research, events, and faculty and staff activities. This series of News and Information Services photographs is comprised of portraits of more than ca. 7,000 individual faculty and staff members spanning the years 1946-2006 (bulk 1950-1990).

This series of faculty and staff portraits, commonly known as "Series D", is part of the News and Information Services photographs collection, which consists of several other series often based on format such as the size of the negatives (4x5 or 35mm) or content (general campus photography or aerial photographs). Series D consists of black and white 4x5 inch negatives and 1-1/4 x 2-1/4 inch prints and negatives of faculty and staff (and some student) portraits alphabetically arranged.

The negatives were received in several accessions prior to 2007 totaling 7.5.f linear feet (15 boxes). These accessions were physically interfiled into a single alphabetic run. In 2016 a final accession 5.5 linear feet (15 boxes) of analog negatives were received. These have not been physically interfiled so the collection now consists of two alphabetic runs. However, in the container listing of this finding aid the files are presented in a single alphabet. Based on information supplied on the original negative envelopes, the listing includes faculty/staff name, department or unit (when provided) and date(s) of the portrait. Bentley Library negative numbers are included (if applicable)

The latest accession marks the end of the News and Information Services analog photography. The faculty and staff portrait series is continued in the Bentley Library's Michigan Photography digital photo collection.

William Bolcom (born 1938) is a composer and pianist. Joan Morris (born 1943) is a mezzo-soprano. They were both members of the University of Michigan School of Music faculty. Bolcom and Morris have given numerous performances since 1973. They have also recorded albums of classical and popular songs. Performance files include programs, itineraries, newspaper articles and reviews of each performance, and contracts. There are also files relating to the University of Michigan student production of Mina & Colossus as well as Barnum's Nightingale; original scores to Bolcom's compositions, including McTeague, Casino Paradise, and A View from the Bridge; topical files relating to awards, competitions, and other activities and interests; and physical and digital audiovisual materials.

The papers of William Bolcom and Joan Morris document Bolcom's work as a composer and performer as well as Bolcom's and Morris's collaboration in performing and recording American popular songs and classical music. There is also some material relating to their academic work at the University of Michigan, notably a 1988 production of a student opera, Mina & Colossus. The papers include programs, itineraries, and correspondence relating to performances, manuscript and published scores, topical files, audio and visual material (including sound recordings), and photographs.

Widely published and award winning Detroit born Polish-American author whose life is at the heart of her poetry, diaries, and publications. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between Pacosz, certain family members, and associates; diaries highlighting pivotal events in her life; creative works; publicity materials; family and biographical information; and photographs.

The Christina V. Pacosz papers gives the researcher an insight into the works and mind of an American born Polish poet. This collection, in which the files are arranged chronologically, spans the years 1899-2019, with the majority of the materials reflecting the years 1961-2012.

The collection comprises of correspondence between Pacosz, her literary cohorts, and family members; published and unpublished anthologies, manuscripts, and poetry; biographical and genealogical records pertaining to Pacosz and her family; works created by her students; personal diaries; photographs of herself, family, and colleagues. The collection also comprises of publicity and research materials.

Publications produced by the University of Michigan registrar's office including course descriptions and time schedules, statistics and reports on enrollment, and a variety of brochures, manuals and handbooks.

The Publications subgroup of the Office of the Registrar consists primarily of statistical summaries and reports in addition to several brochures, newsletters, and instructional manuals (the latter of which were intended to help faculty and staff understand and provide assistance with the registration process). Categories of statistics include degrees conferred, student retention rates, measures of the student body's diversity, student grades, and enrollment figures by various categories including minority group, graduates by campus, degree level, field of specialization, and credit hours and undergraduate grade point averages. Diversity statistics include a number of reports from the 1970s and 1980s produced by the Office of Affirmative Action with assistance from the Office of the Registrar. Enrollment statistics include the Report of the Registrar of the University and the Term Enrollment and Credit Hour Report. Other significant records include reports on fees and fee regulations.

The Time Schedule, which has been published several different names, documents the courses offered by the University of Michigan each academic year. Print versions of the Time Schedule have also been cataloged under call number 0393 Bimu B5 2. These publications include the Time Schedule (1928-1995), the Schedule of Courses (1995-2002) and the Schedule of Classes (2003-2004). In the Winter Term of 2004, the Office of the Registrar launched a digital-only version of the Schedule of Classes that is available in the Bentley Library digital repository and accessible via links in the online version of this finding aid.

The subgroup also contains technical documentation of the Computer Registration Involving Student Participation (CRISP) system from the 1970s as well as development guidelines and end user documentation of the Academic Record online computerized database from the 1990s.

Founded in 1841, the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) is the liberal arts college of the University of Michigan, encompassing over 100 academic departments and non-departmental centers, programs, institutes, museums, and laboratories. The record group includes correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, reports, proposals, subject files, and program materials from the administrative offices of the dean and the academic units that make up the college.

The records of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) of the University of Michigan date from 1846 with the first meeting of the literary college's faculty. They now span more than a century and a half and comprise 549.4 linear feet (in 550 boxes), 3 volumes, and 169.9 GB of minutes, correspondence, memoranda, reports, and subject files detailing the activities of the college from its early beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century to its present status as the largest of the university's colleges.

The administrative records of the college have come to the library in six major accessions beginning in 1942 with small periodic accessions thereafter. In addition, the college has periodically deposited bound record copies of the minute books of the meetings of the LSA faculty. Covering the years 1846 to 2007, the minute books (oversize volumes, boxes 204 to 209, and box 388) are the most important source of information about the college, especially for the period before World War I because few other extant records document the activities of the university's liberal arts college.

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science is a teaching and research unit of the University of Michigan Medical School. The collection consists of publications produced by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science and the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, including annual reports, newsletters, brochures and histories.

Publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

The series Unit Publications contains a brochure and a proposal regarding the consolidation of ophthalmology services at the university into one center as well as a 1999 history "A Heritage of Excellence: The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan 1872-1999." There is also a program from a concert in 1997 Symphonic Visions, celebrating the 125th anniversary.

The series Sub-Unit Publications contains annual reports, brochures, directories, newsletters and reports of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center. The newsletter Advances in Ophthalmology begins in 2001. Dedication and groundbreaking material for the Kellogg Eye Center and the Brehm Center are also included.

Private society affiliated with the University of Michigan, sponsors music, opera, theatrical and other performances. Contains brochures or pamphlets, flyers and other publicity publications. The two volume history One Hundred Years of Great Performances, 1879-1979 is included in addition to the newsletter UMS Notes. Also contains programs of various performances sponsored by the University Musical Society.

The UMS Publications, 1874-2010 (13 linear feet) were received from the University Musical Society staff in periodic transfers. Additional publications, collected by the Graduate Library, have been interfiled to fill gaps in the series. Publications is composed of two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

The Unit Publications series contains printed material published specifically by the University Musical Society. These publications are defined as being widely distributed and may be published at regular intervals. They are arranged by genre of the publication.

The Michigan Student Assembly (MSA) is the official student government organization for the University of Michigan. Established in 1906, the student government now known as MSA has existed under the names the Student Council, the Student Legislature, the Student Senate and the Student Government Council. The MSA record group is comprised of annual reports, minutes, resolutions, organizational files, scrapbooks, and publications.

The Michigan Student Assembly (MSA) record group is comprised of annual reports, minutes, resolutions, organizational files, scrapbooks, and publications produced by the Assembly, its committees, and its officers in official and unofficial capacities. The record group has eight series: Minutes, Reports, Records, Files, Student Legal Services, Visual Materials, Scrapbooks, and Publications.

Minutes of executive committee, 1874-2002 (with some gaps); minutes and proceedings of state convention, 1873-1880; financial records; and roster, 1873-1978, of lodges chartered by Michigan Grange, showing date of charter, location and other data; also records of various defunct local granges.

The records of the Michigan State Grange include minutes and proceedings of the state convention, minutes of the executive committee, financial statements; and rosters and applications for membership of individual chapters of the State Grange. Whenever a local chapter ceased operations, its records would be transferred to the State Grange office. The records of some of these defunct chapters make up the bulk of the State Grange record group. Records of local Granges may include minutes of lodge meetings, financial records and membership lists. The local records are listed in the contents list in the order in which they were received they were received from the state office. Two indexes, one by chapter name and the other by chapter number, should be used to locate the records of a particular chapter. The chapter numbers were assigned consecutively as the chapters were organized. Counties represented in these defunct chapters include Alcona, Antrim, Arenac, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Chippewa, Crawford, Emmet, Genesee, Gogebic Hillsdale, Iosco, Jackson, Lenawee, Macomb, Marquette, Menominee, Midland, Monroe, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, Sanilac, Saginaw, Schoolcraft, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Washtenaw, and Wayne.

Another portion of the record group includes materials of W. J. Brake, who was a lecturer for the National Grange and who held office for the State Grange.

Other records of the Michigan State Grange were donated to the University Archives and Historical Collections of Michigan State University. The MSU Archives holds the Grange records from the following counties: Allegan, Barry, Benzie, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Clare, Clinton, Eaton, Grand Traverse, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Isabella, Kalamazoo, Kalkaska, Kent, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, Otsego, Ottawa, Shiawassee, St. Joseph, Van Buren, and Wexford.

The Boyne USA Resorts record group documents, through visual materials, scrapbooks and clippings, publications, and a scattering of administrative material, the development of northwestern Michigan as an important recreational center. The bulk of the collection consists of various visual media, photographs, photographic slides, albums, videotapes, motion pictures, promotional posters, display photographs, and design images of Boyne facilities.

The records have been arranged into the following series: Everett F. Kircher materials; Boyne USA publications and promotional materials; Topical files; Photographs; Negatives, Photographic Slides; Videotapes; Motion pictures; Art work; Architectural concept and promotional boards; Miscellaneous office records; Scrapbooks and Clippings, and Miscellaneous. Gerard Faeth (1936-2005) professor of aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering was a world-renowned scholar, researcher, and NASA advisor on theoretical and experimental research on combustion, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and instrumentation. The collection includes correspondence, teaching materials, research proposals, presentations and publications, photographs and other visual materials reflecting his academic, research, and consulting career. The collection covers the years 1964-2005, but primarily documents 1985-2005.

Academics

The Academics series contains materials related to the Honors program, the course pack for the course on student activism at Michigan taught by Goodspeed in winter 2004, and the final draft of his honors thesis "Urban Renewal in Postwar Detroit: The Gratiot Area Redevelopment Project" and related background materials.

The collection documents the founding of the Women's Studies Program at the University of Michigan, and the review of the program that took place in 1979. The collection contains administrative files, correspondence, historical information, curriculum information, and meeting minutes. In 2007, the Program became the Department of Women's Studies. In 2020, it was renamed the Department of Women's and Gender Studies.

The collection of the Department of Women's and Gender Studies (formerly Women's Studies Program and Department of Women's Studies) at the University of Michigan contains a range of records, including administrative files, correspondence, curriculum information, event files, and meeting minutes. The collection documents the founding of the program, program reviews, the Critical Perspectives on Women and Gender series, the Women's Studies Library, and other program activities.

The records were received in two accessions. The original accession records consist of ten series, which are arranged in alphabetical order with the exception of the last, Miscellaneous. Records from the 2009 accession are arranged into seven series: Dean's Office, Executive Committee, Critical Perspectives on Women and Gender, Program Documents, Publications, Women's Studies Library, and Visual Materials.

The University of Michigan Housing Public Affairs office disseminated information and served as a spokesman for issues related to student housing. The files were collected or created by Alan Levy who was the director of Housing Public Affairs starting in the 1990s. Levy also held previous positions within the Housing Division. Included are topical files on campus issues and student life policies as well as national and international events impacting the campus community.

These files from Housing Public Affairs, were collected and created by Alan Levy in his roles with the Housing Division, primarily as housing spokesman. Documentation includes files on topics such as alcohol use, capital improvements, crime and safety, diversity in housing, and student deaths. Additionally, the university's response to external events, such as the outbreaks of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), the September 11 Terrorist Attacks, the Virginia Tech Massacre, and Y2K are also documented. Files on rate changes in university housing during the 1970s, and information of the university's purchase and sale of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity house are also found in these records. The files are arranged into four series: Topical Files, University Housing Rate Changes, Nu Sigma Nu, and Audio-Visual Materials.

Center devoted to assisting faculty in the task of providing effective instruction, including evaluation and research. Series in the record group include Budget, Correspondence, Topical, and Grants; files related to the administration and research and educational activities of the center, and of its directors Stanford Ericksen and Wilbert J. McKeachie.

The records of CRLT document the administration of the unit and its programmatic activities including funding of faculty research projects. The records are divided into five series: Budgets, Correspondence, Topical, Grants, and Workshops and Seminars. The majority of the materials are from the period 1972-2004.

The A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning (TC; also referred to as Taubman College) was established in 1931 as the College of Architecture. However, courses in architecture have been offered at the University of Michigan since 1876, and a department of architecture, formed in 1913, preceded the creation of the college. Since its formation, TC has offered courses and programs in several areas, including landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, real estate, and, of course, architecture. The record group includes dean's administrative files and correspondence, other administrator files, meeting minutes, department and program files, materials from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), lectures and other documentation on the Raoul Wallenberg lecture hosted by the college, and several photographs and negatives of the college and TC-related events.

The A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning (University of Michigan), records document the teaching of architecture and design at the University of Michigan beginning in 1878. The records include administrative files, correspondence committee minutes, reports, photographs and architectural drawings. The records have been received in a number of separate accessions which may include material that continues or complements record series from a previous accession or may overlap chronologically with previous accessions. This finding aid reflects the intellectual structure of the records by bringing like material together across accessions. As a consequence, in the container listing box numbers will not necessarily be in consecutive order.
