Papers of University of Michigan Professor of Political Science and Faculty Member, Institute for Social Research. Contains correspondence, grants and topical files.

The collection is divided into three series: Grants (1.1 linear feet), Topical (1.2 linear feet), and Correspondence (.7 linear feet). All relate primarily to Organski's prolific research in the areas of political science, foreign affairs, political demography spanning three decades and dozens of international topics.

Zoologist, college professor, president of University of Michigan, 1929-1951. Professional files relating to his career with the University Museum and as a professor of zoology, and presidential files containing correspondence, reports, speeches, and other University materials, including budget and legislative files, material relating to changes in University administration, his relationship with faculty, students and alumni, and photographs.

The Alexander Ruthven papers consists of two series of records. The first is the papers of Ruthven as president of the University of Michigan, 1929 to 1951. The second, and smaller, series is the files maintained by Ruthven as a zoologist with the University Museum and as professor of zoology. This latter series dates largely from 1908 to 1929 but also includes collected earlier files from the 1870s.

Correspondence; survey files detailing studies of political behavior, racial attitudes, and the quality of life; files relating to his University activities and his involvement with professional organizations; and speeches and publications; and photographs.

The papers of Angus Campbell consist of correspondence, administrative materials, proposals, files relating to various surveys, writings, speeches, and lecture notes. While there are papers going back to 1949, the bulk of the collection dates from the 1960's. The series in the collection are: Biographical Material; Conferences; Correspondence; Institute for Social Research-Survey Research Center; Memberships; University of Michigan Committee Assignments; Off-Campus Assignments; Professional Organizations and Activities; Publications; Speeches; Teaching Files; and Photographs.

Charles Cannell was a social scientist, professor, and co-founder of the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan. Papers consist of project files, research proposals and grant applications, conference presentations, teaching material, and biographical information, the majority of which span 1974 to 1998. The bulk of the collection represents work on an array of projects regarding interviewing and survey methodology, including several projects on the use of technology, such as the telephone, in the interviewing process.

The Charles F. Cannell Papers measure 2.5 linear feet and range from 1946 to 2001. The bulk of the material, however, dates from 1974 to 1998. Papers consist of project files, research proposals and grant applications, conference presentations, teaching material, and biographical information, the majority of which span 1974 to 1998. The bulk of the collection represents work on an array of projects regarding interviewing and survey methodology, including several projects on the use of technology, such as the telephone, in the interviewing process. The papers have been divided into four series: Biographical Files; Conferences and Seminars Files; Projects and Proposals Files; and Topical Files.

Founder and director of the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an organization that later merged with the Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan to form the Institute for Social Research. Correspondence, reports, memoranda, articles, lectures, and an unfinished manuscript pertaining to research on war bond sales for the U. S. Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 1943-1946; also papers on subsequent research on social behavior and psychology conducted at the University of Michigan.

The Dorwin Cartwright Papers reflect Cartwright's career as researcher of war bond sales for the Bureau of Agricultural Economics during World War II and his later activities as professor and staff member of the Institute of Social Research. The papers contain some correspondence reflecting his transfer from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to the University of Michigan, but include primarily reprints of Cartwright's articles and reports while on the staff at the University. The papers also contain some of Cartwright's lectures and an unpublished manuscript in which he summarized his research on war bond sales. Accompanying the war bond materials are several promotional advertising posters from World War II.

Records generated by administrators and offices charged with the financial activities of the University, including Secretary and Vice-President Shirley W. Smith and Controller and Assistant Secretary John C. Christensen; include general University financial records; records of land; trust fund records; proposed development and construction projects; operating records of buildings, divisions and other units.

The records of Financial Operations date from 1837 to 1982, primarily after 1910. The 27 linear feet of manuscript material, 52 oversized volumes and one reel of microfilm reflect not only the financial records normally associated with an accounting office, but also the broad range of subjects which became a concern under the leadership of Shirley Smith. What would eventually become Financial Operations may have served as a records storage office for many of the other units under Smith's control. In any event, Financial Operations became the guardian of a wide variety of records, documenting the University in a number of ways not normally expected of an accounting service.

Of particular note, the collection contains a variety of different record formats. Bound materials, in the form of books, are included in the boxes and when numbering more than one, are listed in the finding aid as multiple volumes. The collection also contains oversized volumes, in the form of large accounting books. These oversized volumes are numbered and stored separately. They are listed in the finding aid where intellectually appropriate, and designated by volume number. Enclosed in this finding aid is an index of the oversized volumes, organized by number, and their contents.

The collection is divided into six series: General University Financial Records; Trust Fund Records; Records of Land, Proposed Development and Construction; Operating Records of Buildings, Divisions and other Units; Miscellaneous Reports, Studies and Volumes; and Accounting Office Records.

F. Thomas Juster was a research scientist and professor of economics at the University of Michigan from 1973 to 1996. His work focused on analyzing household savings and wealth and measuring time use in American families. Juster served as director of the Institute for Social Research from 1976 to 1986. His most notable achievement was his role as founding director of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD).

The F. Thomas Juster papers document Juster's contributions to the field of social science, primarily during his time as research scientist and professor of economics at the University of Michigan. Featured prominently in this collection are records of the Health and Retirement Study, for which Juster served as founding director, as well as his numerous writings. The papers are arranged into eight series: Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old, Biographical, Correspondence, Health and Retirement Study, Michigan Retirement Research Center, Testimony, Topical, and Writings.

Professor of economics and psychology, and research coordinator for the Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, at the University of Michigan. Research reports, addresses and speeches, miscellaneous correspondence, personal material, and photographs.

The George Katona Collection consists primarily of reports and speeches (in typewritten manuscript form) produced during his association with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, and with the United States Government. Also included are reviews of his published works, and reprints of those articles of his not listed in his bibliography. In addition, there is a small amount of correspondence concerning the relationship between the Institute for Social Research and various departments at the University of Michigan.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Institute for Social Research, individuals connected with the history were interviewed. Excerpts of the videotaped interviews were used to produce "In the Public Interest: Fifty years of Social Research." Includes videotaped interviews with ISR personalities and typed transcripts of the interviews. For some interviews only a transcript is available. A copy of the final product excerpted from the interviews is included along with digital materials containing copies of the transcripts.

During 1997-1998, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of ISR, a series of filmed interviews were conducted by Erik Austin with individuals connected with the history of ISR. The interviews were excerpted and used to produce the videotape history In the Public Interest: Fifty Years of Social Research. Documentation from this project includes a copy of the final video, videotaped interviews with individuals associated with ISR, and typed transcripts of the interviews. The records are arranged as two series: Videotapes and Transcripts.

The Videotapes series (29 VHS tapes) includes a copy of In the Public Interest: Fifty Years of Social Research a copy made from a 1956 University of Michigan television program featuring Angus Campbell, and 27 videotapes of interviews from 1997-1998. The Transcripts series contains written transcriptions of the interviews, along with a digital convenience copy of the written text. The digital material contains the text of the interview transcripts in Microsoft Word, PDF and TXT formats. Researchers should note that there are some interviews for which only a transcript is available. As such, the transcript series is more comprehensive than the videotape series.

The ISR Publications contains publications of the Institute for Social Research and several sub-units, especially the Survey Research Center. The publications include annual reports, histories, bibliographies, newsletters, brochures and research reports.
