Volume One includes views of a home, "Verncroft," landscapes, people mounted on horseback, and men working with hay. Many of the photographs are group shots of children. Of note are three photographs of a Mount Vernon Fire Department truck on pages 8, 9, and 17. Pages 22 and 23 focus on a summer baseball game. Page 36 depicts a man dressed in a graduation cap and gown.

Volume Two contains views of nature, building interiors, and street scenes, with a majority of photos taken in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. One exception is the image on page 7 of the Lexington Minuteman statue in Lexington, Massachusetts. Pages 16-23 depict outdoor winter activities, including ice fishing and rides in a sleigh. Many town buildings and structures appear, including the town hall (page 70), the Appleton Academy-McCollom Institute (page 71), and the meeting house (pages 72-73). The water tower in Mont Vernon appears in many photos in both volumes.

The photographs vary in size and a few include handwritten notations on the front or back. These notations mention first names (Art, Uncle Ed, and Allan) and the address of one of the frequently appearing houses, 624 E Guenther St, San Antonio, Texas. The images show a family over a period of approximately a decade, featuring Allan throughout his childhood. Allan can be seen with multiple dogs, cats, and chickens, swimming, in a baseball uniform, and with his family. One photo is of particular interest; Allan, as a toddler, is holding a rifle and is standing with two men in baseball uniforms and military gear at a military encampment. Also noteworthy, a small portion of the photographs have a "Fox Tone Picture," stamp on the back. Some photographs are loose throughout the album and others are housed in folders between pages.

The images consist primarily of informal snapshots of family, friends, and travel. There are no captions or notations beyond an inscription on the front inside cover which reads, "Mildred W Drury."

The first pages of the album include photographs taken in New York City. On a few of these pages, Columbia University's Low Memorial Library can be seen. On page 15, a woman sculpting a bust and a sculptor's studio are shown. The next few pages show various views from the grounds of Château de Versailles. In particular, Hameau de la Reine can be seen in the background on page 20. Also taken in France, photographs on pages 68 through 70 show views from the Eiffel Tower. On page 21 are photographs of Ely Cathedral. The next series of photographs were likely taken in the Netherlands. Images show canals, canal boats, towpaths, and traditional dress and architecture of the region. Following, are five pages of the Alps, traveling through the mountains, and hotels. Photographs on pages 48 through 52 were taken in Italy and show Amalfi, Amalfi Drive (Strada Statale 163), Piazza San Marco, gondolas, and women doing laundry. The last portion of the album includes photographs likely taken in the United States. These photographs show family gatherings, snowshoeing, golfing, and canoeing.

Also included are two photographs showing Japanese women in traditional clothing presenting and drinking tea.

The album has a coarse brown cloth cover with a painted design of two women picking tea and is tied with green string. Housed in gray board wrap with blue cloth spine.

Included are 8 views of the Palisade rock formations near Weehawken, New Jersey, one view including sculptor Karl Bitter's clifftop studio. Other nature views include the Delaware River, South River, Newark Bay, and Mountain Lakes, N.J. City views are mainly of Newark, N.J. streets and buildings, and New York City attractions including Herald Square, the Washington Arch, Trinity Church, Broadway and the Hippodrome. Additional photographs show the boardwalk at Ocean Grove, and pavilion at Asbury Park on the Jersey Shore, an elevated streetcar at Bay Ridge, N.Y., battery at Fort Griswold, Ct., a train on the Lackawanna railroad bridge in East Orange, N.J., and interiors of the Essex County court room and Newark Public Library in Newark, N.J. The European vacation photograph album contains 74 photographs taken throughout Europe ca. 1910. A majority of the photos show various rooms and interior views of an apartment in Rome. Other specific locations include Oxford (England), Subiaco (Italy), Canterbury (England), Fussen (Germany), Weesen (Switzerland), and Glarus (Switzerland).

The first 50 photos housed in the album consist primarily of interior views of the apartment. Handwritten notes provide general descriptions of the view (e.g. "looking from salon through little room where the books are into the salottino"). One specific piece of furniture mentioned is a credenza; which, according to the note, came from the British Embassy. Also included are images of a garden terrace (covered in snow), rooftop cityscape views of Rome, and three individuals (man, woman, and maid). The woman, likely the creator of the album, is referred to as Mable and the maid as Livie. In addition, there is one photo of the Holywell Ford House at Magdalen College, Oxford.

The remaining 24 photos are loose and housed in an envelope. These images show scenes of traveling and sightseeing throughout Europe. Specific sites include the House of Agnes in Canterbury, Sacro Speco in Subiaco, and downtown views of Weesen and Füssen. Of particular note is a photo of a pile of empty fiaschi. The handwritten notation on the back reads "This is our pile of empty wine flasks. I don't belong to the WCTU."

The album is 20.5 x 15 cm with black cloth covers.

Images include portraits of the Bade, Schram, and Fiedler families as well as views of parades in Chicago (including a Barnum & Bailey Circus parade), group portraits of the Plymouth Hook and Ladder bicycle team, the Sheboygan County Fair, natural landscape scenes, cars, trains, farming, and photographic reproductions of sentimental art. Of particular note is a portrait of Marguerite Bade riding a floor sweeper as an infant in 1909.

The 3 manuscript songs are as follows:
  • "Along the Rio Grande," supporting the American cause during the Mexican-American War, with pencil annotations (2 pages)
  • "Lost, O Forever Lost. The awakened Sinner," reflecting on salvation and the death of Jesus Christ (2 pages)
  • "A Toast to Our Flag," a celebration of the American flag (2 pages)

The essay and its typescript are similar drafts of Rose's "Songs of the Civil War"; the manuscript version (36 pages) is an annotated draft, with portions absent from the typed copy (10 pages). The essay, written around 45 years after the war's conclusion, briefly traces the history of popular patriotic music in Europe and in the United States before discussing the Civil War-era's most popular tunes. Rose examined songs from the Union and Confederacy, citing many of the war's influential songs, such as "Maryland, My Maryland" and "John Brown's Body Lies Mouldering in the Grave." He analyzed several songs within the context of the wartime events that inspired them, including the story of the writing of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" by Julia Ward Howe. The typed copy of the essay ends abruptly, and is followed by the text of "Along the Rio Grande."

Photographs consist of a railroad crossing tower, railroad station, trestle bridge, freight and passenger steamers, downtown street views, family photographs, grandstands, earth embankments, buildings under construction, and Galveston's seawall and grade raising project. Amusement/water parks shown include Electric Park (Galveston, Texas), Chutes Park (Galveston, Texas), and Lake Cliff Park (Dallas, Texas).

The album is 19 x 14.5 cm with brown paper covers. A cyanotype of an unidentified building is pasted to the front cover.

The Northern Michigan photograph collection contains an assortment of 43 photographic postcards, 28 mounted photographs, and 6 unmounted photographs showing people and scenes related to logging camp operations in northern Michigan, street views most likely from the town of Trenary, and road construction between Rapid River and Masonville.

The Northern Michigan photograph collection contains an assortment of 43 photographic postcards, 28 mounted photographs, and 6 unmounted photographs showing people and scenes related to logging camp operations in northern Michigan, street views most likely from the town of Trenary, and road construction between Rapid River and Masonville.

Per Albert Peterson (1886-1968), grandfather of collection donor Anne Peterson, is identified in two photographs. It is unclear whether members of the Peterson family took any of these photographs themselves. According to occasional annotations (many of which are not contemporary to when the photographs were taken), members of the “Johnson” family, including Oscar Johnson, John Johnson, and Manny Johnson, are the most frequently represented individuals. One group portrait of loggers is captioned “Wessling Johnson Camp” while another is captioned “Harry Schmit Camp 14.” Several postcards are addressed to an Eva Bannister located in Winters, Michigan, and a Henry Roos of Rapid River and Blaney, Michigan.

Depictions of logging camp operations include several group portraits that illustrate the size of a typical early 20th-century logging camp. A few images also highlight the cookhouse and social side of camp life, while there is also one photograph that shows the first motorized tractor used in log transport in the region. Other images show aspects of town and domestic life in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula from approximately 1908 to 1920. There are group portraits of railroad workers, ice cutters, maple sap gatherers, a baseball team; family members at home or being pulled in dog sleighs; and scenes of town life including a parade that appears to involve individuals dressed in blackface, an early movie theater, a fire engine, and a train crossing. One group portrait appears to have been taken around the 1940s.

A sequence of 13 photographic postcards provides a detailed overview of the stages of rural road construction in the early 1920s including views of trains unloading material onto conveyors, narrow-gauge gravel trains delivering materials to the work site, work crews and horse-drawn graders contouring the surface, and steamrollers compressing the roadbed. The postcards include brief annotations typewritten on the front of the cards.

Large format photographs show a variety of Boston scenes, including commercial streets and buildings, harbor views, waterfront parks, the USS Hartford and USS New York, a streetcar station and tracks, a horse-drawn firefighting ladder truck, and a crowd waching the launch of an unrigged yacht in Boston Harbor. Buildings depicted include Faneuil Hall, the Jordan Marsh department store, and the U.S. Customhouse. A scene on the Boston Common shows the statue of George Washington being decorated, with a crowd of pedestrians including a Civil War veteran wearing a uniform with medals. Also included is a photograph of the Witch House in Salem, Mass., former residence of Joseph Corwin, a judge at the Salem witch trials; and a collision of two locomotives with a photographer on the scene, possibly staged. The first image (10cm x 14.5cm), an overhead view of Charlestown and the Bunker Hill Monument, is affixed to a wall calendar for the year 1884; all of its removable monthly pages are still intact. The calendar was presented with "Compliments of Annie T. Smith."

A majority of these images show Martha's Vineyard and Newport, Rhode Island. Many of these images show scenes of tourist destinations. Notable destinations include Paul Revere's House, the Thoreau-Alcott House, The Breakers, Touro Synagogue Cemetery, and the Marine Hospital of Vineyard Haven. Also shown are views of beaches and people in swimwear.

The John W. Christie Princeton University photograph albums pertain to college life in the early 20th century. Events depicted include academic processions, costumed parades, bonfire preparations, and sporting events. The albums also contain numerous views of campus architecture and an image of the Liberty Bell on tour.

These three albums, compiled by Princeton University student John Watson Christie around 1904, contain 219 photographs of college buildings, events, and student life in the early 20th century. Volumes 1 and 2, each 15cm x 18cm, have green cloth covers with the word "Photographs" printed on the front in gold. Volume 3 (18cm x 28cm) has a deteriorating brown leather cover. Each album contains prints of various sizes, usually no larger than 8.5cm x 12cm, and the first two volumes include inscriptions by John W. Christie. A number of photos have come loose from the pages, and a few loose captions are laid into the first volume. An envelope that once housed a letter to Christie, postmarked in 1907, is laid into the second album.

Many of the photographs, including all but a few items in the third volume, are exterior shots of Princeton University buildings, grounds, and unidentified private or university residences. Interior views feature animal skeletons, religious ornamentation, and athletic banners and memorabilia. Most of the remaining items depict social events such as preparations for a bonfire, processions, and graduation ceremonies. Students are often shown in costumes, masks, or women's clothing, and the first two albums contain a few informal portraits of unidentified men and women. Also included are pictures taken during baseball and football games and during a parade that featured Native American costume. Christie also collected pictures of an ornate ship's bell that Princeton alumni presented to the United States Gunboat Princeton and of the Liberty Bell surrounded by a crowd. One photograph of a campus building in the third album is hand-colored.

Jerome, Arizona Mining Photographs, ca. 1903-1917

The Jerome, Arizona mining photographs consist of 56 photographs (including 33 real photograph postcards) related to mining operations, anti-labor vigilantism, and Arizona scenery.

Most of these images appear to have been taken by an anonymous photographer who referred to himself as "Bob" and who may have been associated with a Philadelphia-based contracting firm, Charles A. Sims & Co., that was hired by the United Verde Mine. Many of the photographs have handwritten captions and bear evidence of having previously been mounted in a scrapbook; many captions have been rendered partially illegible after being affected during the removal process. The captions directly refer to details within the photographs, particularly related to mining operations.

A total of 33 real photo postcards are present, including 14 locally produced images by The Fotoplace and Areldson Studio. Several real photo postcards bear correspondence, and "Bob" appears to have sent some of these images to a woman named "Kitty."

Items of particular interest include at least two photographs depicting J. E. O'Rourke (the superintendent of the United Verde Mine); multiple views of Jerome, Arizona, including street and bird’s-eye views; multiple views of mining facilities and encampments; three images of Native Americans (likely Yavapai); two views of the Montezuma Castle cliff dwellings; a view of stalactites taken from the inside of a cavern; and eight images documenting the expulsion of I.W.W. strikers in Jerome in July 1917 by local citizens who were organized into a vigilance committee. Also present are at least five images taken near present-day Tonto Basin, Arizona, north of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam, which may be associated with another project on which the Charles A. Sims & Co. firm was contracted. While the dam itself does not appear in any of these images, the photographer wrote that the area depicted was to be inundated. Since the dam was constructed by the U.S. Reclamation Service between 1903 and 1911, these images are likely older than those taken in Jerome.

Glimpses of Loma Land contains 16 photographs related to the Theosophical community of Lomaland established in the year 1900 by Katherine Tingley in Point Loma, California. The album (37 x 30 cm) is string-bound and has brown leather covers with the words "Glimpses of Loma Land" sylistically illustrated on the front. All of the photographs are supplied with manuscript captions that are often accompanied by elaborate illustrations and/or quotes from Tingley.

The first page bears the inscribed Theosophical motto "There is no Religion higher than truth", while an inscription on the second page reads: "The Universal Brotherhood Organized by Katherine Tingley for the benefit of the people of the earth and all creatures Among the various Departments are the Theosophical Society The Isis League of Music and Drama and the International Brotherhood League The international headquarters are at Point Loma California." The photographs begin on the third page. Images in order of appearance include a half-length portrait of Katherine Tingley in profile accompanied by an exalting inscription; the "Aryan Temple" built by Tingley in memory of "H. P. Blavatsky" and "W. Q. Judge"; a group portrait of some of Tingley's female students; a group of "Cuban boys of the Raja Yoga School" picking flowers to be used during a celebration of the arrival of 11 Cuban children described as having been previously "imprisoned at Ellis Island by the Gerry Society"; a group of American and Cuban girls "of the Raja Yoga School"; a man dressed as George Washington for "one of the character studies in the historical drama given by the Raja Yoga students"; a group portrait including "Emilio Bacardi - Mayor of Santiago de Cuba" (a personal acquaintance of Tingley's who took part in the inspection of Lomaland during the Cuban children controversy) and "Daniel Faiardo Ortiz - Editor of 'El Cubano Libre' - Santiago de Cuba" posing with students of Tingley at the "Loma Homestead"; a photograph of a Theosophical painting by Lomaland pupil A. The Ismailia-Damascus pilgrimage photograph albums consist of a three-volume set containing approximately 260 photographs taken during an Ismailia Shriner pilgrimage trip in 1902 to the western United States and an undated expedition overseas to various places in Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Palestine, Syria, Algeria, Lebanon, and Italy.

Volume 1 (23 x 25 cm) contains approximately 98 photographs pertaining to an overseas Shriner expedition to various locations around the Mediterranean Sea region including sites in North Africa, western Asia, and southern Europe. It is unclear when this expedition took place, though it likely occurred ca. 1902. Many of the sites visited by the group are related to biblical stories, events, and personages. Images of particular interest include the Lion's Gate at Mycenae (pg. 1); the Arch of Hadrian in Athens (pg. 3); the supposed tree under which Mary and Joseph rested in the Land of Goshen (pg.8); ruins from a "last stand" made by European Crusaders (pg. 11); the Plain of Sharon (pg. 12); the Great Pyramid (pg. 14); a "Nilo-meter" on the River Nile (pg. 14); an elevated view of Istanbul (pg. 16); a group of Greek Klephts marching in traditional uniforms (pg. 17); Tiberias (pg. 18); a tour boat conducted by guides of Nassaire, Farajallah & Co. This typescript (646 pages) contains John Henry Otto's detailed recollections about his service in the 21st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, Company D, during the Civil War. The narrative is divided into an introduction and 52 chapters, with outlines provided at the beginning of each chapter. Otto made two longhand copies of his reminiscences around 1902 and presented them to his sons August and George; Vincent R. R. Carboneau, Otto's grandson, created another longhand copy in early 1943. This typescript, completed by Carboneau's daughter, Phyllis McGrath, in 1977, is a typed version of Carboneau's manuscript, with original spelling, grammar, and punctuation intact.

The typescript, based on Otto's original war diaries, concerns the entirety of his Civil War service, from his initial enlistment in August 1862 to his final discharge in June 1865. An early chapter contains brief notes about his previous military experiences in the Prussian army, with which he served in wars against Denmark (1848) and Austria (1850-1851), and he occasionally referred to his wife and children in Wisconsin. He discussed Wisconsin residents' response to the war and the renewed call to arms in late 1862 and shared stories of his interactions with civilians and military personnel throughout his time in the South, including other German-American soldiers and both Union and Confederate sympathizers. Otto encountered runaway slaves and freedmen and occasionally referred to the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1864, he expressed his negative opinion of George McClellan and McClellan's nomination for the presidency.

Most of Otto's reminiscences concern his daily experiences, and some parts of the narrative are structured like a diary. Otto described camp life, winter quarters, drilling, equipment, and the areas he passed through and visited in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. In September and October 1864, he visited Wisconsin on furlough. The typescript includes his detailed recollections of the Tullahoma Campaign, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the Carolinas Campaign; numerous skirmishes; and major engagements such as the Battle of Perryville, Battle of Stones River, Battle of Hoover's Gap, Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Resaca, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Battle of Peachtree Creek, Siege of Atlanta, and the Battle of Averasboro. He recounted in-battle movements, the experience of coming under fire, and deaths. Otto witnessed a few executions, including that of at least one deserter, and wrote about the capture of Confederate prisoners and equipment. While in the Carolinas near the end of the war, he befriended a young mulatto boy, "Joe Hooker," who returned with him to Wisconsin in 1865. After the 21st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment participated in the Grand Review of the Armies in May 1865, Otto remained in Washington, D.C., where he did some sightseeing. The final pages of the typescript include a copy of Sherman's farewell address to the army.

The album (14 x 18 cm) has grey cloth covers and is in fragile condition, with some early pages possibly missing. All 40 photographs are in good condition and include detailed inscribed captions. Most images are of major buildings and monuments such as the Cathedral Havana, Tacon Market, and Morro Castle.

Photographs of particular interest include views of the following:
  • The wall where Spanish soldiers executed eight medical students falsely accused of desecrating a cemetery in 1871.
  • Hotel Inglaterra (still in operation) with the empty pedestal in front where a statue of Queen Isabella II of Spain stood until 1899.
  • The remains of the USS Maine, sunk in Havana Harbor in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.
  • Tourists looking through the fence at General Fitzhugh Lee’s Marianao headquarters where he served as a commander of occupation forces from January 1899 until November 1900. Gen. Lee was a popular consul general in Havana from 1895 until the Spanish-American War broke out in April 1898, and he was the last American to leave Cuba. During the war, he trained a group of volunteer soldiers in Jacksonville, Florida, but never saw combat. He was appointed commander of occupation forces in the Havana District and returned to Cuba on January 1st, 1899, the day the Spanish evacuated the island

This collection consists of Grant Kohn Goodman's collected documents and research notes, primarily from his time in the Army and his studies at the University of Michigan. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, and news and periodical articles relating to Japanese-Philippine relations, as well as Japanese-Indian relations. Many of the papers relating to the career and activities of Manuel Quezon, including copies of original documents. The collection includes documents transcribed in the 1950s from Quezon's papers.

Researchers should note that this collection documents research conducted by Goodman regarding a variety of subjects relevant to Southern, Eastern, and Southeastern Asia. Specifically, part of Goodman's research focused on the system of sexual slavery perpetuated by the Japanese military between 1932 and 1945. Language in the collection materials may use euphemistic terms for victims of this practice (such as the term "comfort women", coined by Japanese military) and reflects the language in use during Goodman's lifetime.

This album contains photographs taken during a hiking trip in the Grand Canyon at about the turn of the century. The pictures show hikers, canyon scenes, burros, and scenes from the hikers' railroad trip on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe to the canyon.

This album (12cm x 14cm) contains 32 photographs taken during a trip to the Grand Canyon around the 19th century, as well as one photograph of George T. Chaffee riding a horse named "General." A few items show railroad tracks belonging to the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad near the Missouri River and the railroad car "Dorchester." The remaining photographs are scenes from a small group's hiking trip along the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon, including pictures of the hikers in former cave-dwellers' homes, beside the Colorado River, and at the canyon's rim. Views of the canyon and other scenery are also included. The title "Photographs" is stamped in gold on the album's leather cover.

A number of images show bathers on the beach and boardwalks at Atlantic City, N.J., including two views of the Heinz Ocean Pier. Other interesting photographs include a self-portrait and three images of a dressed up skeleton, perhaps for Halloween.

Volume One: The Bonynge family Hoboken album (27.25 x 36.25 cm, lacks covers) contains approximately 90 snapshots of Henry Bonynge Jr.'s family when he was a young man. A majority of these images are dated from 1898-1901 and were taken at 931 Washington Street in Hoboken. Images of note include domestic interior views, a Christmas tree, charming casual portraits, street snapshots, photographs of Henry Bonynge Sr.’s sister Florence graduating from high school, an October 1899 trip to visit landmarks in New York City, and visits to the Jersey Shore.

Volume Two: The Christ Church Hospital, Jersey City album (26.5 x 30.5 cm, black leather cover with gilt title) contains approximately 30 professional quality photographs related to Henry Bonynge Jr.'s medical internship in 1906-1907. There are several carefully composed views of hospital exteriors, interiors, equipment, and staff in uniform. Of note is a view across Hoboken rooftops, the Hudson River, to New York City. Also a fine image of the hospital kitchen and staff. Includes one card photograph of employees with a stretcher in front of a hospital ambulance.

Volume Three: The Bonynge family early snapshots album (26.75 x 36.75 cm, black leather cover in poor condition) contains approximately 400 photographs documenting Henry and Elizabeth Bonynge's early years of marriage as well as Marjorie's infancy. Images of interest include photographs of daily life and family trips from 1910 to 1917 in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Lake Waramaug (Connecticut), Prince Edward Island, Lake George (New York), Newport, Rhode Island, Maine, Atlantic City, New Jersey and Mount Vernon, Virginia. Includes notable images of recreational activities, early automobile travel, horseback riding, construction of the Prospect Street house in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and a July 4th parade. Later notes from Susan B. Strange identify many individuals represented in the album in addition to captions written by Elizabeth and/or Henry.

Volume Four: The Bonynge family snapshots album (27.25 x 36.75 cm, black leather cover, poor condition) contains approximately 250 photographs of Henry, Elizabeth and Marjorie. While some of the images included in this album were taken in 1911, most date to ca. 1918-1925. Images of interest include photographs of Marjorie as a young child riding horses (including ‘Lightning’, a Shetland Pony), trips to Niagara Falls, Quebec, and Lake George in 1921, a trip to Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York in 1922 and a pictures from a "Charley trip," possibly to Wyoming.

Volume Five: The New Preston, Ridgewood, and Nantucket album (24.25 x 36.75 cm, black leather cover) contains approximately 45 high quality photographic prints of people and places in New Preston, Connecticut, and Nantucket, Massachusetts as well as the family home in Ridgewood, New Jersey. There is a partial index for the album which was likely filled out by Marjorie. Images of note include Elizabeth and Marjorie with a pony in 1918, interior photographs of the house at 107 Prospect Street and ten photographs of Nantucket.

Volume Six: The Marjorie Bonynge childhood album (19 x 29.25 cm, black leather cover) contains approximately 40 photographs, including numerous portraits of people and of Marjorie as a child from 1920-1929. Of note is an image of children dressed for a Halloween party.

Volume Seven: The Bonynge European travel album (23.5 x 35.5 cm, black leather cover) contains approximately 70 photographs of a Atlantic crossing aboard the U.S.S. Minnetonka in 1925. The photographs focus on Cherbourg (France), Edinburgh (Scotland), Stratford-upon-Avon, (England), and Volendam (the Netherlands). Images of interest include several views of Henry Bonynge Jr.'s mother's home in Bath, England.

Volume Eight: The Bonynge Wyoming trips album (23.5 x 35.5 cm, black leather cover) contains approximately 65 photographs of a family trip to the Fred Richard Ranch near Cody, Wyoming in 1922. Images include views of hunting, mountain vistas, and horseback riding. There are also copies of three newspaper clippings describing Henry Bonynge Jr.'s near death experience on the trip while hunting.

Volume Nine: The Bonynge Nantucket trips album (23.5 x 35.5 cm, black leather cover) contains approximately 150 photographs of two trips to Nantucket in 1923 and 1924.

Volume Ten: The Bonynge Yellowstone trip album (24.25 x 36.75 cm, black leather cover) contains approximately 150 photographs of a trip to Yellowstone National Park and Shoshone Canyon ca.1920-1922. Notes have been added by both Susan B. Strange and likely Henry Bonynge Jr. Images of interest include photographs of a ranch and horseback riding in an unmarked location, probably near Cody, Wyoming.

The 600 loose photographs in this collection are stored in 11 separate envelopes and have been sorted according to the location they were taken. The majority of these images were taken during a number of family vacations during the 1930s. There are several images that are duplicates of photographs that appear in the albums.

Envelope One and Envelope Two contain approximately 60 images of family, pets, school groups and Ridgewood and Hoboken, New Jersey.

Envelope Three contains approximately 30 images of a cruise to what appears to be Bermuda.

Envelope Four contains approximately 38 images of horses and views of locations in Kentucky.

Envelope Five contains approximately 70 images of multiple trips to Salmon, Idaho. Photographs document the Bonynge family partaking in horseback riding and rodeo at a friend's ranch.

Envelope Six contains approximately 80 images of trips to various locations in the United States from 1936 until ca. 1940. The images have been separated by note cards with locations and dates.

Envelope Seven contains approximately 60 images of a trip taken by Marjorie in March of 1937 to El Salvador and Central America in order to visit a friend from high school named Eva Duke.

Envelopes Eight and Nine contain approximately 170 images from a 1937 Caribbean Cruise aboard the S.S.Quirigua. Many of the images depict Havana, Cuba.

Envelope Ten contains approximately 58 images from a number of unidentified places as well as two photographs from a 1932 trip to Venice, Italy.

Envelope Eleven contains approximately 45 images of unidentified people. Some images appear to be from ca. 1900, though most of the photographs are of friends or neighbors of the Bonynge family in the 1930s.

The album (30 x 26 cm) is a modern three-ring binder with brown faux leather covers. All the album’s images are unmounted snapshots that have been arranged inside plastic album sleeves. The snapshots are mostly either 10 x 7 cm or 10.5 x 16 cm.

The album begins with portraits of Native American individuals taken in the Higgins Block of downtown Missoula, Montana, including two portraits of a Native American man posing with his infant child in a cradleboard as well as an unidentified white man, and four portraits taken outside of “Al Green’s Shaving Parlor.” Other images likely taken in and around Missoula show up elsewhere throughout the album, including several group portraits with a white fence in the background that may possibly have been taken outside the residence of the photographer, Dr. C. W. Lombard. Many photographs also appear to have been taken at the Flathead Indian Reservation.

Images of particular interest include photographs showing Native American individuals and groups (including many families) wearing western and/or traditional clothing, infants in cradleboards, encampment and reservation scenes, and landscape views. While many portraits appear to be quite casual and relatively unscripted, several clearly staged photographs are present including a man and older woman posing with sheep heads, two women (one holding a mirror) combing their hair by a river, and two men playing cards in front of a tipi.

While none of the subjects photographed in this album are identified by captions, an older man appearing in two photographs (one posing with a child on a hobby horse and another posing with a group in downtown Missoula with a child in a hand-pulled wagon) has been identified through research as Baptiste Kakashee, also known as Judge Phte and Kil-Ki-Chee.

Images show a range of different places around the United States, including: St. Joseph, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; Big Spring, Texas; Phoenix and Tuscon, Arizona; Redlands, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, California; and Honolulu, Hawaii. The Shriner group appears to have chartered their train as there are photographs documenting a train breakdown in Arizona and stops in various stations show it to be decorated with banners. Several images includes women and young boys wearing fezzes, indicating that families participated in the trip. There are also several photographs of cowboys and Native Americans in Arizona and Texas. Images taken in California include views of Los Angeles rooftops, Golden Gate Park and San Francisco Bay, Mt. Shasta and San Bernadino, and palms and a grapefruit grove at Baldwin's Ranch in Redlands. There are several images of ships including the S.S. Sierra, the committee boat Fearless, a quarantine boat, an Austrian training ship at Honolulu, the American battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin, and unidentified ocean steamers in San Francisco Bay.

The albums are half bound with red leather bindings, have red cloth boards and are housed in light blue boxes.

"Fredericksburg During the Civil War" is a typed account of a Union soldier's experiences during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Second Battle of Fredericksburg, and Battle of Salem Church. The account includes detailed descriptions of each battle and of the "Mud March" of January 1863. The writer commented on his regiment's movements, casualties, the experience of coming under heavy fire, and other subjects.

Fredericksburg During the Civil War (16 pages) is a typed account of Union soldier's experiences during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Second Battle of Fredericksburg, and Battle of Salem Church. The account begins with a description of the area around Fredericksburg, Virginia, and brief remarks about its strategic importance. The bulk of the document consists of the author's reminiscences about his experiences between December 1862 and May 1863. While crossing the Rappahannock River toward Fredericksburg, he saw a large number of playing cards discarded by soldiers who did not want to seem morally compromised in the event of their death. He described the large number of casualties between Union and Confederate lines during the Battle of Fredericksburg and recalled a heroic Confederate sergeant who took water to the wounded despite the risk of being shot; both sides ceased to fire while he tended to the wounded. After retreating to winter quarters, the author and his tent-mate built a log hut and participated in General Ambrose Burnside's aborted "Mud March" in January 1863.

The narrative resumes in May 1863, when the author's regiment joined the "disastrous" Chancellorsville campaign under General Joseph Hooker. The VI Corps approached Fredericksburg on May 1, 1863, and then engaged Confederate forces. Though the author exchanged fire with Confederate soldiers, he was unsure whether he had been directly responsible for any deaths. He discussed the capture of the Washington Battery, noted the death of a college classmate during the battle, and wondered whether the victory had justified the large number of casualties. As the Union Army continued to move toward Chancellorsville, the author became involved in the Battle of Salem Church, which he recounted in the present tense, listing multiple marching orders and providing accounts of several specific soldiers. The essay ends with the author locating his disjointed regiment and retreating back toward a previous encampment at White Oak Church.

This notebook contains lecture notes on a variety of topics in library science as studied by Bessie Baldwin Beach, who spent most of her career as a librarian for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Carlisle and Chilocco Indian Schools in the 1900s and 1910s.

This single volume notebook contains lecture notes on a variety of topics in library science as studied by Bessie Baldwin Beach, who spent most of her career as a librarian for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Carlisle and Chilocco Indian Schools in the 1900s and 1910s.

From the address on the cover and the contents within, the notebook dates to Miss Beach's time as a library science student at the Columbian University (Washington, D.C.) from 1897 to 1899. The only three dates denoted are March 23, March 30, and April 8, 1898. Newly founded in October 1897, the library science program (housed in the Corcoran Scientific School) consisted of a four-year curriculum towards a Bachelor's of Science in the discipline. Headed by Ainsworth Rand Spofford, who had just completed his tenure as Librarian of Congress, the department consisted of two other instructors: William P. Cutter and Henderson Presnell. Courses covered a range of library skills including administration, cataloging, reference, as well as a thesis.

The David A. Day scrapbook was assembled shortly after Rev. Day's death in 1897 to commemorate one of the most renowned American missionaries in West Africa. It includes photographs and illustrations of the mission and its missionaries, accompanied by captions providing background on the activities of the mission, the way of life of its inhabitants, and biographical notes on some converts. Laid into the front cover is a seven-page typed memoir of Day's life.

The thirty-four silver print photographs are supplemented by half-tone illustrations of the mission and its missionaries (excised from an unidentified publication), and are accompanied by hand-written and typed captions providing background on the activities of the mission, the way of life of its inhabitants, and biographical notes on some converts. Laid into the front cover is a seven-page typed memoir of Day's life. Based upon writing inside the front cover, the scrapbook appears to have been assembled at or for the mission within a few years after Day's death.

Although the creator of the scrapbook is unidentified, the book remains a valuable record of the Lutheran missionary enterprise in Liberia and missionary responses to the inhabitants of that country. The series of images and captions seem equally concerned with religious "progress" (Christianization) and the material improvement of native lives as gauged by their adoption of western dress, methods of production, and attitudes toward work. Singled out for special note are a seven year old girl from "one of the tribes 100 miles north of the mission" who took pride in her dress and ability to use a broom, and a particularly devoted convert, Henry Stewart, and the author of the scrapbook included several views of particularly well-dressed groups of converts assembled and posed in orderly fashion. Along with views of the tidy mission complex itself, there is a secondary emphasis on the unconverted, with illustrations of their method of travel (by hammock), "half-civilized" natives at a saw mill, and semi-nude men standing by the river, awaiting a canoe. The typed captions offer a somewhat more extended, but still relatively brief commentary on native (Grebo) life and their lack of western attitudes and advantages.

Due to the highly brittle paper and exceptionally delicate nature of the scrapbook, researchers are requested to consult with the curatorial staff before beginning their research.

The typescript of William Putney's history of Battery I, 2nd Illinois Artillery Regiment, bound and stamped in gold with the title, was presented to the captain of the battery, Charles M. Barnett, as a Christmas gift in 1897. Putney was only the final editor and compiler of the history, which was based on the recollections, letters, and diaries of a number of men in the regiment, with snippets culled from sources as diverse as Sherman's memoirs, reminiscences from soldiers in other regiments, and popular histories.

In many ways, Putney's narrative is characteristic of the genre of post-war reminiscences, in its selectivity and its tendency to gloss over or reimagine certain events. It is not, however, as thoroughly sanitized as many memoirs, and presents some of the unpleasantries of military service and the war with a surprising freshness. Inclined toward a literary style, Putney balances small, humorous anecdotes, mostly personal in nature, with larger-scale perspectives on the campaigns and conflicts in which the Battery was embroiled. The intrusion of narratives drawn from high ranking officers (such as Gen. Sherman) provides some insight into the average soldier's post-war opinions on what was significant about their experience, but it is the recollections of the minutiae of service, the practical jokes played by soldiers, their everyday coping, that makes Putney's memoir so valuable.

The History of Battery I includes a roster of the battery, with brief notes on the post-war activities of each member. The manuscript maps are probably copies of some printed works rather than recreations from memory. They depict 1) Route of Battery I from 1862 to 1865; 2) military and naval operations about Island No. 10; 3) the last day of the battle of Chickamauga and the route of Battery I; 4) Chattanooga Campaign; 5) the Atlanta Campaign.

The Evans family photograph collection consists of a six-volume set of albums and approximately 60 loose photographs mainly depicting the immediate family of Lucretia Booth Evans of Riverdale, New York. Three of the albums contain baby pictures of Evans and her brothers Mason and Morgan Jr. while the other three albums focus on family life and vacations taken by the family.

Volume One: The Morgan Evans, Jr. Baby Book album (19.75 x 16.5 cm) contains 12 photographs of Morgan Evans Jr. as a young child. There is one photograph with his maternal grandmother, Susan Edwards Booth Robinson. Evans Jr.’s obituary, World War I draft registration certificate and a lock of his hair from when he was 14 months old are also present.

Volume Two: The Mason Robinson Evans Baby Book album (19.75 x 16.5 cm) contains 34 photographs of Mason Evans as a child. A lock of his hair from when he was 18 months old is also present.

Volume Four: The Point o' Woods album (22.25 x 39.5 cm) contains approximately 175 photographs and several negatives stored behind snapshots. This album focuses on summer trips to Point o' Woods on Fire Island, Suffolk County in New York State during the 1930s. Many of the individuals depicted in this album are identified with captions. Images of note include the aftermath of the September 1938 New England Hurricane.

Volume Five: The Lucretia Evans early adulthood album (26.75 x 34.25 cm) contains approximately 170 photographs and several negatives stored behind snapshots. The images include landscapes from the late 1930s and images of Lucretia's final days at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and her time in school as an X-Ray technician.

Volume Six: The Lucretia Evans travel album (22.75 x 31.75 cm) contains approximately 200 photographs, 4 negatives and 35 pieces of printed ephemera representing trips to the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Canada in the 1950s. Inside the front cover is a 50th wedding anniversary clipping of Kitty and Morgan Evans Sr.

There are approximately 60 loose photographs that range from early 20th century cabinet cards of Kitty Evans' family to a large class picture of Lucretia Evans’ X-Ray Technician class.

The George E. Boggs collection contains one photograph album, one letter, and one box of ephemera. These materials document the First World War service of George E. Boggs and to a lesser extent his brother Hamilton Irwin Boggs. Also included are numerous photographs of the Boggs family both prior to and after the war.

The album does not have a strict order; many photographs from Boggs’ time in France are interspersed with images of family and at training camps in the United States prior to going to France. Captions are apparently written by both George Boggs and his mother Caroline. The majority of the images from France are of Châtillon-sur-Seine but other places are also represented. The letter, written in France on December 28, 1918, is from Hamilton Irwin Boggs to an "Uncle Jim" (possibly his great-uncle James P. Boggs). In the letter, Hamilton Boggs gives a summary of his service in the army, and mentions George Boggs’ service.

The ephemera includes George E. Boggs' dog tags, an embroidered souvenir French handkerchief, an United States Army Air Service insignia pin, and a piece of "trench art" made from a French 75mm shell casing. Also present are eleven track and field ribbons and two medals, all from 1913-14.

Du Bois medicinal recipe book, [ ca. 1895]

This notebook (241 pages) contains medicinal recipes as well as instructions for making other health, beauty, and household products. It contains several newspaper clippings and paper inserts, including one letter by Pierre Du Bois.

The entries are arranged alphabetically, with tabs marking each letter. The volume bears a torn origin label of Piccadilly, "...chester" on inside front cover. Concoctions include beauty lotion, cordials, kola koka, blood purifier, and cures for St. Vitus's Dance, anemia, and dandruff. Also present are tinctures, salves, ointments, cures, and preventatives. A few agricultural items respect calf drench and a substance for ewes after lambing. Some newspaper clippings respect aquarium cement and curry powder. Additional paper inserts include various formulas, a letter from Pierre to his father, and basic Spanish phrases on a sheet with the Venezuelan Consulate (Baltimore) letterhead.

These photograph albums (19cm x 30cm) contain 49 pictures of scenery, people, and buildings in the Adirondack Region of northern New York. Labeled photographs show buildings, animals, and scenery in and around Ilion, New York; Clifton, New York; Oxbow, New York; Chippewa Bay, New York; the Grass River; the Oswegatchie River; and Washington, D.C. Houses and other buildings shown include a home on "Preston Isle" in Chippewa Bay, the "Old Morris House" (a colonial stone house), an abandoned iron furnace, the White House, and the United States Capitol. Photographs of construction equipment are also present. Of the individuals and groups pictured, only Jack Moffett, a young boy, is identified. Photographs of note include pictures of an encampment, the exterior of a log cabin decorated with pine boughs, game and fish, and replicas of the ships Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Two photographs indicate the photographer's interest in capturing motion: one shows the Empire State Express at full speed and another shows a woman throwing water, captured at a shutter speed of 1/50 second. The albums have black or blue binding with "Photographs" embossed in gold on the covers.

The Civil War Battlefields photograph album (17cm x 29cm) contains 34 pictures of broken wooded landscapes, Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, and views of a river, likely the Potomac. Each numbered print is mounted in a 11.5cm x 16.5 cm window, framed by a thin gold border with decorations at the corners. Most images are views of wooded landscapes, many showing evidence of possible military activity and earthworks, taken in unidentified flat and hilly regions. Streams, small wooden buildings, and fences are sometimes visible. The album begins with a camping scene, presumably a self-portrait of the album's unidentified compiler in the field. Another view shows a group of three posed on a house's porch. Two photographs show a three-story domed public building, adjacent to what appears to be a war monument. Four pictures show Arlington National Cemetery, one including a plaque with lines from Theodore O'Hara's poem "Bivouac of the Dead." Of particular note is a group portrait of seven African American schoolchildren with their young teacher, taken inside a crude schoolhouse; the following picture shows the exterior of two wooden buildings, possibly in the same unknown location.

Subjects include Prospect Park in all seasons, Coney Island, Medford, Long Island train depot and other locations in rural Long Island, and the Great Falls of Passaic River in Paterson, N.J. during the winter. Other images include a Revolutionary War era house, Boys' High School, Garretson's homestead, and "Darby's Patch," a former shantytown in Brooklyn. Although the majority of images are scenic there are several photographs of animals and people, including children. One photograph ("Garretsons") shows two men (one possibly James Otis Barnaby) on a country road with a barn and picket fence, a camera on a tripod in the left foreground. Photographs include brief manuscript captions.

The albums have black leather cover boards and are housed in beige cloth traycases.

Schafer Brothers Logging Company Photograph Collection, ca. 1893-1940

The Schafer Brothers Logging Company photograph collection consists of 18 images related to the business’s logging operations in western Washington State from the mid-1890s to 1940.

The photographs are stored in plastic sleeves and kept in a black vinyl-covered ringed notebook (38.5 x 32 cm). Five of the images are 30 x 35.5 cm while the other thirteen are 20.5 x 25.5 cm. The photographs in this collection detail important aspects of the Schafer Brothers Logging Company’s development as an enterprise. At least four of the photographs were taken by Clark Kinsey. Other attributed photographers include Anderson Photo., Jones Co., H. C. Nelson, E. A. Smith, K. S. Brown, and Stan Spiegle. Certain photographs bearing the stamp of K. S. Brown appear to possibly be copies of other photographers’ work that was reproduced at a later date.

The Mugshots collection consists of approximately 100 photographic portraits produced between 1892 and 1920, the vast majority of which are mugshots.

The Mugshots collection consists of approximately 100 photographic portraits produced between 1892 and 1920, the vast majority of which are mugshots. The collection includes real photographic postcards, mounted and unmounted paper prints, and one severely tarnished tintype. Also present are two fingerprint identification cards with handwritten lists containing names of numerous individuals represented in the collection. A small number of photographs appear to be standard studio portraits. Photographs range in size from 6 x 10.5 cm to 11 x 17 cm.

Many of the mugshots have printed and/or handwritten information on their versos, including names, known aliases, nationalities, birth dates/locations, occupations, arrest dates, names of arresting police officers, criminal charges, sentences, prison locations, remarks on physical appearances, and Bertillon measurements. Most of these images were produced in various places in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland, with Philadelphia being the most represented location. The mugshots are mainly of white male subjects, though there are also four mugshots of women present. Five African American individuals (four men, one women) are also pictured. A substantial number of mugshots are of individuals from immigrant backgrounds, including Italians, Irish, Austrians, Germans, Poles, Greeks, Jews, etc. Approximately 90 individuals are personally identified in total. Recorded criminal charges include shoplifting, pickpocketing, larceny, burglary, forgery, embezzlement, false pretense, flimflamming, auto theft, horse theft, conspiracy, attempted murder, and murder. Specific police departments and correctional facilities represented include the Pennsylvania Department of State Police, Harrisburg Department of Police, Philadelphia Bureau of Police, Hartford Police Department, Newark Department of Police, Auburn Prison, Sing Sing Prison, City of New York Police Department, City of Boston Police Department, Camden Bureau of Police, Baltimore Police Department, Bureau of Criminal Investigation for the New Jersey Reformatory in Rahway (now East Jersey State Prison), U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, City of Paterson Police Department, Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, Montgomery County Prison (Norristown), Columbus Department of Police, City of Wilkes-Barre Bureau of Police, Trenton Department of Public Safety, New York House of Refuge, and the Reading Department of Police.

  • a 1921 mugshot of an Italian man named Peter Erico, who was executed by electric chair on September 25 1922 along with Antonio Puntario after the pair were found guilty of murdering Detective Samuel Lucchino

Greene Family Lake Winnipesaukee photograph album, [ca. 1891]

The Greene Family Lake Winnipesaukee photograph album contains views of the Greene family's steam yacht on Lake Winnipesaukee, lakefront properties and lakeside scenery, pictures of people enjoying indoor and outdoor recreational activities, and formal portraits.

The Greene Family Lake Winnipesaukee photograph album (25cm x 30cm) contains 32 photographs taken on and around the New Hampshire lake in the late 19th century. Most prints are 24cm x 19cm, pasted one to a page, or 12cm x 19cm, pasted two to a page; one page has four prints, each 9cm x 12cm. The original covers are no longer extant.

A large steamboat, the Lady of the Lake, appears in one or two images. A small steamboat belonging to the Greene family, theMohawk, is shown on the water in numerous photographs, often with people relaxing on deck or waiting to board from a dock. The album contains many scenic views of lakeside properties, likely owned by the Greene family, including one of the Hotel Weirs. One boy posed by a tall flagpole with a large United States flag, erected next to a lakefront house, and one item shows a flock of ducks around a sign for Roxmont Mineral Spring, possibly part of the Hotel Weirs grounds. Some of the pictures are interior views of unidentified people relaxing in a parlor; in one photograph, a woman sits at the piano while a boy plays a horn and a man reads a newspaper from Boston, Massachusetts. J. A. Greene appears in at least two photographs; in one photograph he sits in a parlor with an unidentified woman and in another photograph he is shown with freshly caught fish along the lakeshore. Photographs of a hunting party beside a log cabin, fishing from a canoe, riding in a horse-drawn wagon, and posing by a dead deer are also included. The album has a formal group portrait of a man, woman, and young boy and a formal portrait of a young girl, all likely members of the Greene family. Two fanciful images show a person standing next to a florally decorated bicycle with a large umbrella attached and a staged scene of a tooth extraction set in a medical office. A second photograph of the same medical office shows a man writing at a desk.

Most of these views appear to be from Michigan’s lower peninsula, but one slide is from Wyoming in 1910.

M. Welch, respectively, and includes advertisements on the inside covers for educational texts and forms. Two pages of manuscript notes define musical intervals. An additional nine pages of text sporadically document the words and actions of at least two children, Harry and Inez, between the ages of 1.5 and 5.5 years old. The writer notes the ages at which children were singing, the type of art they created, the humorous questions, observations, and comments they made, and religious thoughts they vocalized.

He said 'Mama I guess one angel holds the man's mouth open while the other takes his spirit out of him.' " Comments about dogs, toys, and imaginative games speak to youthful entertainment and play, and others are more suggestive about the conditions in the children's environment that caught their attention. Questions like "what color is the moon on the other side," or observations that a dead mouse "is kind of wilted isn't it," provide insights into what the children were seeing and wondering about.

One entry at the back of the volume reads, "J. D. McAuliff (Heals by rubbing) St. Louis, Mo."

The Caribbean photograph album contains photographs of towns, scenery, and people in Jamaica, Saint Vincent, Barbados, and Trinidad.

This photograph album (19cm x 26cm) contains 77 photographs of towns, scenery, and people throughout the Caribbean. Most pictures are 14cm x 22cm, though a few are 10cm x 15cm, and many have lengthy captions with additional information about locales pictured; many are numbered. Captions include information about hotel rates, population figures, vegetation, geographic features, and local customs. The photographs show Jamaica (43 items), Barbados (13 items), Trinidad (12 items), local residents (4 items), Saint Vincent (3 items), and other scenes (2 items). The album has many views of city streets and towns taken from street level and from higher vantage points, as well as views of rivers in Saint Vincent and Jamaica and of Carlisle Bay, Barbados. Volume 1 (18 x 25.5 cm) has a pebbled red leather cover and contains 101 cyanotypes, while Volume 2 (18.5 x 23.5) has a beige cloth cover with "Kodak Views" embroidered on the front and contains 54 cyanotypes. Both volumes are in fair condition. Together, these albums provide a wide-ranging, informal, town-and-country portrait of New Bedford in the last decade of the 19th-century. Most locations are unidentified, but they include city streets, commercial buildings, residential neighborhoods, churches, farms, woodland paths, Civil War fortifications, bridges, waterfront scenes, and views of the local shoreline. Also present are several bird's-eye views, two photographs of artwork, and pictures of ships of various kinds. Particular attention is given to the classic whaling vessels that still resided at New Bedford's harbor at the time these albums were produced. The booming textile industry of the time, on the other hand, is hardly represented: a solitary image shows a mill with a smokestack and workers’ housing. A few captions are included in Volume 2 as well as on the backs of some photographs, but for the most part the things and places pictured are not identified.

Although there is no official attribution to a photographer in either album, several of the exact same images appear in the souvenir booklet of the New Bedford Semi-Centennial and Industrial Exhibition (1897) and are credited to “R. R. Topham.” Robert R. Topham was a longtime New Bedford resident who at the time these albums were produced worked as a clerk in the city assessor's office.

The Shelter Island (N.Y.) photograph albums contain 188 pictures taken during a visit to Shelter Island around the late 19th century. Volume 1 (26cm x 22cm) contains 98 photographs from an Original Kodak or Kodak #1 camera and Volume 2 (32cm x 28cm) contains 90 photographs from a Kodak #2 camera, mounted 4 to a page. Each album has black covers with the title "Kodak" originally printed in gold on the front; the title on the second album has faded.

Both albums contain similar photographs of people enjoying outdoor leisure activities, particularly on a beach. Many items are informal portraits of young women alone or in pairs, often identified in manuscript captions. Women, men, and children are shown sitting and walking along the beach, wading in the water, riding in carriages, and watching baseball at "Jim-town," among other activities. The seaside hotel Manhausett House appears as does "the Casino." Several images are of spectators at a tennis pavilion. Of note are a group of images in the second album from a trip on the steam-powered yacht Meteor, including shots of passengers relaxing on deck and crew members. A monkey appears in one photograph in each of the albums. A photograph vendor's wagon appears on the beach, and a man is posed with a camera on a stand.

The first 18 photographs are identified on a printed list of captions enclosed in the volume, and the final seven, which are attributed to W. J. Carpenter of Telluride, Colorado, have captions and negative numbers handwritten on the negatives. The book's covers are wooden boards covered with a soft mohair-like padding; a deteriorated leather cover, now detached, is stamped with the title "Art Album." Each of the photographs shows a scene from southwest Colorado, including street-level and higher-vantage views of Telluride, Ouray, Silverton, the Sheridan Mine entrance, Marshall Basin, the San Miguel River, and numerous mountains. Burros, miners, and a group of Ute Indians are pictured, as well as a group of men in the process of branding cattle, a group of tourists (including women) on horseback, a group of men labeled "Dry Creek Cow Boys at Dinner," and the "highest suspension bridge in the world."

The Henry M. Wheeler photoprint collection consists of approximately 719 images of colonial architecture and historical locations in Massachusetts from ca. 1889 to 1915.

The Henry M. Wheeler photoprint collection consists of approximately 719 images of colonial architecture and historical locations in Massachusetts from ca. 1889 to 1915. The collection is mainly composed of 10 x 15 cm silver platinum, platinotype, and gelatin silver prints as well as 15 x 20.5 cm cyanotypes. A couple of manuscript notes are also present. Much of the focus is on eastern Massachusetts, centering on Wheeler’s hometown of Worcester. Photographs show residential architecture from the 17th century, unidentified colonial homes, and contemporary architecture from Wheeler's day and age. Many of the historical structures documented here were in danger of vanishing during Wheeler's lifetime, and many have long since been destroyed. Other photographs show natural landscapes, noteworthy trees, country roads, parks, public and educational buildings, farms, monuments, bridges, milestones, and gravestones as well as images of famous paintings, engravings, and lithographs. Also included are a small number of images related to Washington, D.C., Maine, and New Hampshire. Wheeler likely took the vast majority of these photographs, though there are several instances where he credited the original sources of certain images. The collection materials were removed from the original album volumes they were stored in and have been rehoused in three 3-ring binder albums and three flat boxes. Most photographs also have original reference numbers that were used by Wheeler to organize the collection.

In addition to this finding aid, the Clements Library has created the Henry M. Wheeler Photoprint Collection Inventory. This inventory lists items according to volume/box location and includes references to specific page/mat numbers, image descriptions (most of which are derived from captions originally inscribed by Wheeler on photograph versos), and photographic formats.

The Oklahoma Homesteader's photograph album (36cm x 29cm) contains 49 prints showing pictures of buildings, scenery, cowboys, women, Native Americans, and watercolor paintings. Sixteen images are exterior views of a ranch home and outbuildings in a flat, grassy area with few trees. Two men in wide-brimmed hats are sometimes visible, including one driving a two-wheel horse-drawn carriage. Nine photographs are interior views of the residence showing a wallpapered living room or office, a paneled bedroom, dining area, and kitchen.

Of particular note are the interior views that show hats, bridles, lassos, and rifles mounted on the walls in combination with full bookshelves, framed art and photographs, and decoratively arranged wheat stalks. A large framed print or painting of a cow is featured over the mantelpiece along with small cabinet photographs, feathers, and artifacts; the beds are covered with Native American blankets and carefully arranged newspapers; books, papers, and a book-press are visible. Also of note are views of the rustic kitchen with coffee advertising signs and genre prints displayed. One view shows a dinner table set for seven, while another shows a bearded man cooking over an iron woodstove. Two pictures show a pair of women posed outside of the house with a dog. Two images are exterior views of a property with a larger wood frame house that appears to have been recently constructed.

A group of 14 pictures depicts cowboys roping cattle, performing farm work, pitching horseshoes, and relaxing alone or in groups. One photograph shows a group seated on a blanket, playing cards with guns drawn.

The album has six photographs featuring groups of Native Americans; a band of Native American men brandishing rifles appear posed with a white soldier in a uniform jacket; a mixed-gender group of Native Americans includes several men in military uniforms, women and children; a group of women and children in front of a tipi; a group of women and children with a child's wagon; three Native American men in military uniforms; and a large group with uniformed men on horseback, women, and children, taken at distance with tipis in the background. The final two pages have photographs of watercolor paintings of prairie scenes featuring small buildings. The album has a brown leather binding with a moire-patterned blue cloth cover, and a spine label "0013" from a previous unknown owner.

A wall calendar appearing in an interior view indicates June 2 falling on a Sunday, which occurred in 1889 and 1895.

This photograph album (25cm x 19cm) contains 87 photographic prints depicting scenes in Alaska, Yellowstone National Park, and the Yosemite Valley in the late 19th century. The photographs, all of which have captions, were taken during visits to four geographic areas: Muir Glacier (21 photographs); Tacoma, Washington, and Helena, Montana (8 items); Yosemite National Park (48 items); and the Yosemite Valley and Arizona (10 items). Most photographs show natural scenery such as mountains, rock formations, waterfalls, and geysers, and some are pictures of hotels. Many show tourists climbing or viewing natural formations and scenery, and some show members of the photographer's party posing for portraits.

The album has two identical prints of a group of amateur photographers holding box cameras onboard the Queen, which is shown in several other photographs. Views of buildings in Sitka, Alaska; Tacoma, Washington; Helena, Montana; and Yosemite National Park are also included. One photograph shows a woman modeling a Chilkat blanket and totem pole cane, and another shows a "Tamed Bear" standing on a raised platform. Also of note is a picture of a train, taken as the photographer's party disbanded near Chicago. The volume is a quarter-bound album with a title stamped on the cover in gold: "Photographs."

The New England Criminals tintype album contains mug shot portraits of thieves, burglars, and other criminals or suspected criminals. Most of the individuals pictured were white males of varying ages, but the album also includes photographs of women and an African American man.

This album (15cm x 12cm) contains 47 tintype portraits of criminals or criminal suspects, mostly white males of varying ages. Pictures of one African American man, horse thief Frank Fields, and four women, mostly thieves, are also included; two of the women were photographed with other unidentified women. All but two of the subjects are identified by their name, alias, and/or the nature of their alleged crime; two photographs appear in the album twice. Most of the individuals were accused of theft (often of horses) and burglary, but others were arrested for shoplifting, pickpocketing, adultery, polygamy, and being a "confidence man." The album's green covers have a gold floral design, and the album is closed with a metal clasp.

The Chicago photograph album (14cm x 18cm) contains 24 photographic prints, each placed in a 9cm x 11.5cm window. The first item is an exterior view of a home located at 5828 Indiana Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, and the following eight items are interior views of parlors and a dining room; one shows a woman sewing. The album includes six photographs of John Ball Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with various garden scenes and a shot of two women in a small horse-drawn carriage, and one photograph of the steamer "The North Land" passing Belle Isle near Detroit, Michigan. One item features the Michigan Soldiers' Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and another shows a woman feeding a group of birds there. The remaining six items are informal group and individual portraits taken in Washington Park (Chicago, Illinois) (2 items), Palmer Park (Detroit, Michigan) (1 item), "Our Back Yard" (Chicago, Illinois) (1 item), and unidentified outdoor locales (2 items); two men posed by a bicycle in Washington Park. The album's cover is decorated with a colored floral pattern, with a gray geometric pattern near and covering the spine.

The Michigan School photograph album (27cm x 21cm) contains 54 studio portraits of unidentified men, women, and children taken in Michigan cities such as Albion, Ann Arbor, Jackson, and Lansing in the late 19th century. The photographs are comprised of 40 cabinet cards and similarly sized card photographs, 11 cartes-de-visite, and 3 tintypes. Four pages from a different album (containing seven photographs) are laid into the volume, as is a photograph of an infant. Most of the images are individual portraits of adult men and women. Two images by a Lansing Michigan photographer are of school buildings, one identified as Michigan Agricultural College. A floral design is printed directly onto each page, and one cabinet card is designed to look as though the print is peeling off of the mount. A pink ribbon with the letters "Q," "L," and "S" attached to it is laid into the album. The volume's padded covers are wrapped in red cloth with a floral design imprinted on the front. A hard surface with the title "Album" is attached to the front cover.

The Holyoke Canoe Club photograph album (19cm x 26cm) contains 65 pictures of scenery, communities, and activities along the Connecticut River. The red pebbled cloth cover has the title "Photographs" stamped in gold gothic letters on the front. Included are photographs showing wooded scenery and structures along the river, including pictures of the Holyoke Canoe Club boathouse, the sailing and paddling of canoes, and of men and women in sporting dress socializing indoors and outdoors. Many of the images focus on men in sailing canoes, including one view of a man sitting in a sailing canoe on shore with sails set. Two photographs show a woman standing next to a beached canoe and a woman paddling a canoe along a flooded street. Individual and group portraits appear, taken at a small cabin in a wooded area, in front of a doorway, beside an indoor fireplace, and beside indoor and outdoor tables set with food, among other scenes. A group gathered around a piano appears in two images, one of which shows two of the women holding banjos. The album contains exterior shots of churches and other unidentified buildings, some overlooking a body of water. A view of two horses pulling a large log on a sleigh is also included.

Of note are views of a steam launch at the canoe club dock; a view of canoes stored on racks inside the boathouse; and two views of the interior of what is likely a local textile mill.

The William Tipton sample photograph album contains 121 photographs taken by William H. Tipton at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from circa 1884 to 1889. The images are group shots of former Civil War regiments, veterans, prominent politicians, and others, mainly taken at the Gettysburg battlefield and newly-erected monuments.

The William Tipton sample photograph album contains 121 photographs, originally mounted in an album. For preservation purposes, the photographs were removed from the album and mounted on archival cardstock (34 x 43 cm). Each photograph has been assigned a number corresponding to the original page number. Most pages displayed only one large photograph, but several had multiple smaller images, each of which has been assigned a letter following the page number. In six instances, photographs were originally mounted over other photographs, suggesting that the album was revised over time. Five of these photographs have a large "X" drawn through the image. These images are labeled as "under" + page number. In addition, four loose photographs were tucked between pages, and they are labeled with the page numbers they were between.

The album has a quarter-bound, black leather cover, and the leather spine is missing. The gilt title, though partially illegible, presumambly once read "Photographs, Gettysburg Groups."

The photographs were taken by William H. Tipton on the Gettysburg Battlefield from 1884 to 1889. Some of the pages are stamped with "W.H. Tipton, The Battlefield Photographer, Gettysburg, Pa." The majority of images have captions, either hand-written on the album page or directly on the photographic print, identifying groups and individuals. This album was one of several sample albums showing photographs available for purchase at W.H. Tipton's photo gallery. Original prices are included next to many of the images.

All of the photos in the album are group shots of men, women, and children, ranging from five to over one hundred people. In the majority of images, the men are wearing suits and have ribbons pinned to their chest; however, in some images, the men are dressed in military uniforms. The majority of images are of a particular regiment posing with their unit's monument, often taken at the dedication ceremony. The regiments represented are from many Union states including Connecticut, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin, with Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York regiments appearing most frequently. Although the majority of the images are of veterans and politicians from the Union side of the Civil War, some images include Confederate veterans. The 25th anniversary of the battle was commemorated with a three day reunion in July, 1888 that featured both Union and Confederate veterans. Photos 53-59B depict this reunion on the battlefield and feature Confederate Generals Wade Hampton and James Longstreet, in addition to Union generals, including Warner Miller, Daniel Butterfield, John Hartranft, Joseph Carr, Henry Slocum, Joshua Chamberlain, and Daniel Sickles. Sickles rests on crutches, as he lost his leg while fighting at Gettysburg.

Many of images were taken in either wooded areas or fields, with farms occasionally noticeable in the background. In photo 71, Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) and its observatory are visible in the background.

Politicians appearing in photos include President Grover Cleveland and Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks (57A), and Vice President Hannibal Hamlin (85). The photos also depict governors and former governors, including Ebenezer J. Ormsbee (Vermont), Elihu E. Jackson (Maryland), Joshua L. Chamberlain (Maine), Joseph R. Bodwell (Maine), James A. Beaver (Pennsylvania), Robert E. Pattison (Pennsylvania), Robert S. Green (New Jersey), Joseph B. Foraker (Ohio), Jeremiah M. Rusk (Wisconsin), Cyrus G. Luce (Michigan), Samuel J. Tilden (New York), John F. Hartranft (Pennsylvania), Wade Hampton (South Carolina), and Lucius Fairchild (Wisconsin). Many of these governors were former generals.

Fraternal organizations are also depicted in the album. Photo 36 is a group shot of the Improved Order of Red Men, specifically the Tonguwa Tribe; members of The Grand Army of the Republic appear in photo 38, and individual members may be present in other images as well.

As there were no African American units or "Colored Troops" at the Battle of Gettysburg, there are very few African Americans appearing in these photos. Photo Under 48 depicts an African American soldier standing next to a group of white soldiers. Photo 46 depicts a group of identified teachers, Native American students, and parents from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The majority of Native Americans in this photo are wearing western clothing, with two men wearing traditional Native American dress.

Debating Society minutes, [ca. 1884-1885]

This volume contains the text of two debates held by a debating society during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The society compared the relative merits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and discussed whether men and women have equal mental capacities.

This manuscript book of a late 19th-century meeting of an unknown debating society contains the text of two debates. The first argument (76 pages) was to debate whether George Washington or Abraham Lincoln was "the greater man." Individual speakers, whose names have often been added in pencil, are identified as supporting either Washington or Lincoln. Those who advocated for Washington concentrated on his military service and his role in establishing the United States. One repeated argument in his favor, for example, was his refusal to accept a royal title after leading the Continental Army to victory over British forces. Those who favored Lincoln focused on his character, decisions made during the Civil War, and eventual martyrdom. The matter was taken to a vote following an argument that both presidents deserved to be lauded. The middle of this debate is marked by a brief foray into Constitutional issues, particularly the advisability of introducing amendments, though the argument soon returned to its original topic. An additional argument in favor of Washington, written on a separate piece of paper, is placed inside the book's front cover.

The second debate (50 pages) concerned a comparison of the "Mental Capacities of the Sexes," specifically whether the minds of women are equal to those men. After heated debate, centered on the more prominent historical roles of men and the impact of women in the domestic and maternal spheres, the group decided overwhelmingly ("Loud cries of All, All") that the genders did share equivalent mental capacities. The album (25.5 x 30.5 cm) has dark green cloth covers with “Photographs” stamped on the front cover. All of the album pages are loose and fairly brittle, but the images are in generally good condition.

The first page contains sixteen signatures from participants in the 30th reunion of the Union College class of 1885. Subsequent photographs include several views of Union College campus, aspects of student life (including dorm room interiors and a group of portraits showing crossdressing men captioned “Minstrels"), and formal portraits of members of the Kappa Alpha Society in the mid-1880s, presumably including some of the attendees at the reunion whose signatures are represented.

The unidentified presumed compiler of the album can be seen in several photographs. He appears to have been an engineer specializing in infrastructure projects for electric-powered rail systems and was active in the early stages of when railroads in the United States were moving towards electrification. Many of the smaller circular photographs found throughout in the album were likely produced by a Kodak No. 2 camera, while larger format prints and cyanotypes are also present.

Contents are arranged chronologically starting with the compiler's student days before focusing on various professional assignments and elements of his personal life. During the ten years following his graduation from Union College the compiler apparently participated in several railroad development projects, mainly in what would become Washington State but also in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Idaho. Photographs from this period of his life include views of survey camps along the Columbia River and other regional waterways, interior and exterior views of the compiler’s home in Tacoma, portraits of his growing family, and snapshots of Klickitat people (including a group portrait of three women picking hops). By 1896 the compiler and his family appear to have moved back east, settling in New Rochelle, New York. Photographs from this period include documentation of projects on intercity lines on Staten Island and other nearby boroughs, a project in upstate New York, and numerous images of friends and family. The Albany and Hudson Railway and Power Company’s new electric train line to various towns between Hudson and Albany required establishing power sources along the route. As a small group of photographs in this album show, this necessitated constructing a dam at Stuyvesant Falls on the Kinderhook Creek which would provide electric power to the rail line and various local businesses. The final pages of the album document the construction of Hudson Park Dock in New Rochelle as well as leisure activities such as the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup auto races and a naval review in Oyster Bay.

A total of 18 loose photographs are included towards the back of the album. Images include a group portrait of Union College students from the 1880s, a studio portrait of a young woman and infant taken in the mid-1890s in Tacoma, and a double exposure of a woman standing next to an automobile in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1918. Also present is a printed pamphlet replete with numerous halftone reproduction images titled “Letter from Mayor Clarke to the Voters of New Rochelle with Pictures of Improvements Under His Administration” which highlights several civic infrastructure projects (including the Hudson Park Dock) undertaken during the tenure of mayor Henry Clarke.

This collection contains the autobiographical writings of Edwin H. Allison, a scout in the western United States who participated in the capture of The Gall and Sitting Bull.

The Edwin H. Allison autobiography was prepared for publication after he had settled in Dayton, Ohio, in the late 1880s, and is accompanied by several other brief, unpolished essays written at approximately the same time. The autobiography is probably a working draft, and the present manuscript lacks pages 7-23. Further, there are a number of additional, somewhat rougher pages of writing, with some duplicate pagination. Though Allison was not a professional writer, his narrative is an unusually engrossing one, filled with action and insights into his own thoughts in the best tradition of the dime novel. That Allison was a scout in the west and participated in the capture of the Gall and Sitting Bull, of course, makes the material of considerable significance for understanding the nature of "diplomatic" and military relations between the Hunkpapa and whites, but it also provides documentation of variations in white perceptions of the Hunkpapa during the days in which white military supremacy was firmly exerted.

Among the associated essays are ones describing the Great Buffalo slaughter of 1880; one considering the question whether "the Indian" is really lazy; a discussion of the Indian way of life that includes commentary on their religion, dancing, recreation, and hunting; and a piece on Indian sign language and spoken language that includes a brief discussion of Sitting Bull's name.

The F. Jay Haynes Yellowstone album (26cm x 19cm) contains 48 pictures of natural landmarks in Yellowstone National Park taken by Haynes circa 1880s. Each 12cm x 20cm print is surrounded by a gold border printed onto the album's removable pages. The volume is bound with a tied string and the title "Photographs" is stamped onto the front cover in gold. A bookplate for F. Jay Haynes is pasted onto the back page.

The photographs show numerous landmarks from the part of Yellowstone National Park that lies in present-day Wyoming. The album contains pictures of several geysers and geyser craters, sometimes with tourists present, and a hotel is visible in pictures taken near Mammoth Hot Springs. Included are sights such as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River, the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, and the Golden Gate. One picture taken beside the Snake River shows "The Three Tetons" rising above the horizon, and one without a caption shows horse-drawn carriages beside a long building. Isaac Oliver Best manuscripts, ca. 1880s

The Isaac Oliver Best manuscripts are post-war reminiscences that combine personal experience, anecdotes, and secondary source information in relating the critical campaigns of the Union Army in the spring and summer of 1864.

The Isaac Best manuscripts were prepared in the 1880s or 1890s for the veterans organizations of the 16th and 121st New York Infantry Regiments. These include three extended essays, "Sheridan in the Shenandoah" (F6:1a), "The Siege and Capture of Petersburg" (F6.1b), and "Through the Wilderness with Grant" (F6.1c).

These essays are clearly-written post-war reminiscences in the grand old style of the Grand Army of the Republic, and contain both personal, anecdotal information about the incidents gathered first-hand, and information undoubtedly gathered from secondary sources. They focus on the critical campaigns of the spring and summer of 1864, after the arrival of Ulysses S. Grant both bathed the soldiers in blood and revitalized the hopes of the Army of the Potomac.

"Sheridan in the Shenandoah" includes a rapid, second-hand narrative of the struggle for the Valley in 1862 and 1863, and Best's personal recollections of the fall campaign of 1864. Particularly noteworthy are his accounts of the 3rd Battle of Winchester and Fisher's Hill, and a very detailed account of Cedar Creek. As an aside, Best comments that the importance of "Sheridan's Ride" has been much overplayed, and argues that much of VI Corps was not in flight and had never been broken at all. While he reserves praise for Sheridan, he argues that the emphasis on the importance of the ride robbed Gen. Horatio Wright of his due. Best also offers his analysis on the role of morale in shoring up the efforts of the armies.

"The Siege and Capture of Petersburg" is an attempt at a comprehensive retelling of the major events of the siege of Petersburg from the end of the Battle of Cold Harbor through the end of the war. Best witnessed the long, drawn-out battles in front of Petersburg during the summer of 1864, including the disaster at the Crater, and the several attempts to circumvent the Confederate defenses during the following winter. In 1865, it appears that Best was assigned to Sheridan's command during his final raid into Northern Virginia.

The essay "Through the Wilderness with Grant" includes detailed accounts of the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, and Cold Harbor, nearly all written from Best's recollections, including seeing several close friends killed. The end of the essay includes a generally positive appraisal of Grant's strategy.

The bulk of the drawings were done in pencil, but several were made using pen and ink, pen and wash, and pastels. A large portion of the images depict interior domestic scenes of women and young girls reading, sewing, dining, visiting, sleeping, and at play with toys in parlors, living rooms, and bedrooms. These drawings include details like clothing, accessories, furniture, and decorations. Several show women wearing the Christian cross as jewelry, head coverings or veils, and chopines (a platformed shoe), possibly representing adherents of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Several of the drawings feature women at work doing tasks like cooking, sewing, washing dishes or floors, sweeping, gardening, tending to the ill, or bathing children. Older women are represented alongside middle-aged women, young girls, and infants. Adult men and young boys appear occasionally in the scenes.

Several illustrations appear to show women laboring as domestic servants, and at least four of these images represent dark-skinned women. One additional drawing shows a family scene with three dark-skinned women knitting or resting in a hammock.

Outdoor scenes are also represented, showing women and children walking and travelling in the streets, playing games, visiting the beach, riding horses, shopping, sleighing, or picking fruit. One drawing depicts a family standing beside a sphinx with pyramids in the background. Other locales outside of the home are also featured, including a store, a church, a theater, a photographer's studio, and possibly a school.

Miscellaneous other topics were drawn, such as angels, Grecian women, a dream, a centaur statue, a shield with an American crest, and two singing girls who appear to be impoverished.

Only two of the drawings were signed, both landscapes by Theodore H. Pond, one dated 1882 shows a building in the countryside and the other depicts a village street scene leading towards a church. Two other unsigned landscapes are also present, one labelled "St. Augustines Canterbury." Two other illustrations -- one a portrait of a young woman and the other an interior scene with four children blowing bubbles-- have the name "Edith" inscribed with ink on the verso. Several of the drawings were labelled by a child in block letters. One of the drawings was made on a sheet of paper that had previously been used to write notes on the Letters of Paul.

The drawings were enclosed in an Upsala College envelope labeled: "'Drawings of Edith & Elsie Pond when they were little girls in Syria.' (Be Sure To Save These)"

The Celebrity portraits scrapbook contains numerous clipped engraved portraits of actors, actresses, singers, musicians, entertainers, politicians, writers, and other famous individuals that were compiled by an aunt of Florence C. Everett (wife of Norwood, Massachusetts-based journalist William Winthrop Everett) during the 1880s.

The volume (32 x 19 cm) has brown leather covers (front cover detached) and contains 176 pages, all of which bear pasted-in engravings that were clipped from various newspapers, magazines, journals, advertisements, etc. Two inscriptions are present on the inside of the front cover; one states “This book is the property of W. W. Everett - 76 Winter St. Norwood, Mass.” while the other reads “The book was made by Mrs. W. W. Everett’s aunt Helen, probably in the 1880s. WWE.” The volume appears to have originally served as some type of accounting ledger before being repurposed.

Notable individuals represented within the volume include Joseph Jefferson, Sarah Bernhardt, P. T. Barnum, Lillie Langtry, Genevieve Ward, J. H. Haverly, E. A. All of the photographs have penned captions written in the same handwriting. The collection includes images of camp buildings, the cutting, stripping and transport of logs by rail, water and horse drawn wagons, as well as images of lumbermen at work.

The Black River Lumbering Photographs collection consists of 16 albumen prints (24 x 19.15 cm) depicting the Black River logging camp (presumably Alger, Smith & Company) in Alcona County, Michigan taken by an unknown photographer sometime ca. 1880. The prints are individually pasted on 30.5 x 25.5 cm brown paper mounts. All of the photographs have penned captions written in the same handwriting on the back of the mount. The Kate and Robert Johnson photograph album contains interior and exterior images of the Johnsons' homes and grounds in San Francisco, and Menlo Park, California, as well as portraits of the Johnsons, their family members, and friends photographed at these locations. The pictures, taken by Eadweard Muybridge circa 1880, also include examples of spirit photography.

The Kate and Robert Johnson photograph album (30 x 25 cm) contains 84 images of the Johnsons' homes on O'Farrell Street in San Francisco, California, and "Heartsease" near Menlo Park, California, taken by Eadweard Muybridge circa 1880. The album has a pebbled brown cover with a binder's ticket from Partridge & Cooper, 192 Fleet St. [London].

The first group of 42 images consists of exterior and interior views of their San Francisco mansion, including views of parlors, bedrooms, and children's rooms. A few individual portraits taken on the premises are included. Of particular note are several spirit photographs of Robert and Kate Johnson, both of whom were alive at the time (20, 21, 24, 29). The couple's art collection is often visible including the painting "Elaine" by Toby Rosenthal. Furniture and decorative arts objects appear and reappear in different rooms and positions in the carefully composed images. In one image (37), it is possibly the photographer Muybridge who appears in a mirror reflection. The section ends with a close portrait of Robert C. Johnson.

The remaining 42 photographs are scenes from the Johnsons' "Heartsease" estate near Menlo Park, California. While the San Francisco photographs focus primarily on room interiors, the Menlo Park photographs mostly show the grounds and surroundings. Two images include sporting activities: a girl riding a young pony (70) and a group of men and women playing croquet (60). A photographic title page image for this section includes Muybridge's pseudonym "Helios" (44). Also included is a portrait of one of Kate Johnson's numerous cats, her affinity for which was well-documented (43).

This album showcases Muybridge’s interest in urban architecture and landscape photography, his success in earning commissions from notable men and women, while also touching on San Francisco’s rapidly developing wealth. It highlights the Johnsons' ornate mansion, their expansive art collection, and features both their urban homestead and rural retreat simultaneously. Moreover, with portraits, staged "spirit" photographs, and landscape scenes placed alongside more traditional photographs of the Johnsons' homes, the album speaks to Muybridge’s multiple artistic talents and the nuances of the Johnson’s personalities.

Many of the photographs depict young men or women, and one photograph shows a couple. The tintypes have some hand-coloring. The album has a decorative red and black stamped leather cover with a metal clasp.

The Connecticut Woman's travel diary (56 pages) recounts the author's social activities during several weeks spent mingling with high society in New York City; Washington, D. C.; Aiken, South Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina. Throughout her trip, she spent much of her time at balls and meeting with acquaintances and notable figures, among them Attorney General Charles R. Devens, a daughter or daughter-in-law of Zachary Taylor, and Admiral William Rogers Taylor. While in the capital, the author and her traveling companion, Isabella, made a trip to the White House to meet Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes (p. 3). Though the diarist focused on social prestige and social customs, she reported her brief impressions of Forts "Sumpter" and Moultrie in Charleston (pp. 38-39).

The Allen family photograph album contains carte-de-visite and tintype portraits of various individuals, including members of the Allen family of Mayville, Michigan.

The Allen family photograph album (13cm x 10cm) contains 22 cartes-de-visite, 13 tintypes, one lithograph, and one printed card. The cartes-de-visite and tintypes are studio portraits of men, women, and children. Most items show a single person, though some, such as a woman and a young baby, were photographed in pairs. The lithograph depicts a young girl holding a dog. An educational card, one of a series of "Little People Lesson Pictures" issued by the American Sunday-School Union (volume IV, number 1, part 5), is laid into the volume. The card has a colored print of a Biblical scene entitled "Beginning of the Hebrew Nation," and the reverse side has questions and answers about Abraham's journey to Canaan. The cartes-de-visite were made by photographers in locations such as Imlay City, Michigan; Owosso, Michigan; and Peterborough, Ontario. The volume's covers are leather, with a Maltese gold-embossed cross stamped in relief on each side.

Many of the photographs, including some of the cartes-de-visite of African American soldiers, were taken in the Dakota Territory. The original album (12cm x 15cm) has covers bound in blue cloth; a metal shield is attached to the front cover.

This collection contains two of his manuscript histories of the Civil War: a 1,200-page description of the war up to Gettysburg, and a 700-page politically-focused manuscript entitled "The Political Triangle." Griffith illustrated both with caricatures of personages, maps, and political cartoons drawn by Griffith and the text reflects his copperhead upbringing.

The remainder of the collection consists of a newspaper-like manuscript from 1872, "The Reservator," including political commentary on history and current events; a memoir of his Iowa boyhood during the Civil War (also made to look like a newspaper); another newspaper-like manuscript, entitled "Monthly Notings" written while in the Washington Territory, 1886; two notebooks, a scrapbook, and an album of family and friends' cartes-de-visite and tintypes.

Jordan July 9/89"; and five studio portrait photographs taken by John Alvin Anderson of six of Jordan's children born to his Lakota wife Julia Walks First Jordan (1859-1913; a niece of Red Cloud's, also known as Winyan Hoaka, True Woman, Weah-Wash-Tay, The Beautiful One), identified through verso inscriptions as "Mary J. Jordan," "Everard Cady Jordan," "Collins Custer Jordan," "Edwin E. & Wm Ward Jordan," and "Ella Adaline Jordan." The date and location of the portrait of Red Cloud and Jordan may point to the possibility of that image having been produced while the subjects were in Washington, D.C., during the 1889 Sioux Land Commission negotiations.

Also present are two photomechanically-illustrated postcards that date to the early 20th-century. One postcard bearing an advertisement for the Northern Pacific Railway was postmarked June 11, 1915 and addressed to John P. Cook's daughter Nina Cook in Frontier, Michigan, with the message "Dear Nina: I am on my way wish you were with me love Fred." The second postcard bears a profile view of the U.S.S. Nebraska and appears to have been postmarked August 1, 1910 and was addressed to Cook at his residence in Ransom, Michigan, with the message "Dear cousin sorry to make you all wait so long for ans (sic) to your kind letters but can't be helped this is a photo of one of the ships with the Atlantic fleet."

The album (26.5 x 21.5 cm) has red velvet covers and a metal clasp. While the album itself and all the photographs in it date to the 19th/early 20th century, these materials were compiled by a noncontemporary individual with an interest in historic images of people reading. Also present are three newspaper clippings related to the accidental death of railroad fireman Joseph Ronk (1865-1888) following a train derailment in Wooster, Ohio, in July 1888.

Volume 1: The first volume (35 x 25.5 cm) was originally a copy of the 1876-77 Autumn and Winter edition of Mme. Demorest’s Illustrated Portfolio of the Fashions and has red cloth covers and gilt embossing work on the front and back. “Monroe Hubble” is inscribed on the volume’s first page, while “Willie Hubble” is written on the inside of the back cover; both inscriptions appear to be written in a child’s hand. Two engravings by Kimmel & Voigt made for Demorest’s Monthly Magazine appear towards the front and were part of the original volume. Subsequent pages also reveal numerous illustrations and descriptions of various articles of clothing listed in Demorest’s fashion catalog, though much of this has been obscured by scrapbook items that were pasted in. Compiled materials mainly include various trade cards and scrapbook decorations, but also include several engravings showing scenic and rural landscapes, women’s fashions, portraits, and performance artists (including Smith’s Swiss Bell Ringers). Of particular note are Uncle Tom’s Cabin-related illustrations and cartoons involving racial caricatures of an African American regiment called “The South 5th Rangers.”

Volume 2: The second volume (25 x 20 cm) has red paper covers with “Scrapbook” and decorative designs embossed in gold on the front. A photomechanical reproduction of a portrait of N. B. Hubble as an adult appears on the inside of the front cover. Subsequent materials mostly include trade cards and scrapbook decorations, several of which also appear in the first volume. Many of the trade cards were produced by the Calvert Lithograph Co. of Detroit. Items of note include Shakespeare-related cartoons; an ad for “Mme. Fontaine’s Bosom Beautifier” that incorporates a portrait of Oscar Wilde; a photographic portrait of a baby made to look like a stamp; and scrapbook cutouts including one of a black man (likely supposed to be a Haitian soldier) wearing one boot and components of a French Army uniform as well as one of two women embracing and kissing.

The C. E. DuBois photograph album (27cm x 34cm) contains 42 photographic prints taken in and around Hoboken, New Jersey, circa 1870s. The prints range in size from about 5.5cm x 6.5cm to 21cm x 13cm. Many are framed with hand-drawn, colored borders, sometimes with decorative or floral designs; one border has small drawings of an anchor and United States flag and one has small drawings of firefighters' equipment. Four items' borders include captions: "A Votre Santé" (a group of men sitting around a table with drinks), "H.Y.C." (Hoboken Yacht Club), "Oceana Hose" (horse-drawn firefighters' hose carriage), and "Martha Institute." The album's green cloth cover has a plate with the name "C. E. Dubois" in block letters.

The majority of photographs show individuals or groups of people and building exteriors, including urban residential and commercial buildings. The first seven pictures are studio portraits of unidentified individuals, and the album contains 13 additional photographs of two or more people on a porch and in gardens. Images include two men playing a game of chess on a porch, a group of men relaxing and drinking on the same porch, and a group standing on the dock at the Hoboken Yacht Club. The remaining pictures focus primarily on other subjects. Fifteen are images of homes, commercial buildings, gardens, a gazebo, and a view of the Cranford (New Jersey?) train station, and the Martha Institute of Hoboken. The album contains four views of the Hoboken Yacht Club in which ships' masts are sometimes visible. The final two photographs are related to the "Oceana Hose" firefighting company a picture of a horse-drawn hose carriage and a view of the firehouses for "Oceana" and "Excelsor" alongside a saloon and another business. Firefighters in top hats appear in both of these photographs. Also of note is a photograph of a group of women on a porch viewing a photograph album.

This volume was produced by Peter McGivney as a gift for his sister, Julia A. McGivney. Its entries are largely copies of popular song lyrics and some poetry. Many focus on sentimental themes like remembrance, familial relationships, love, death, and religion. A few patriotic titles were included. Peter McGivney elaborately decorated and illustrated the volume with paintings, pencil drawings, pen-and-ink embellishments, printed scrapbook die-cuts, and calligraphic titles and borders. He drew numerous patriotic images, including American flags, shields, eagles, Union soldiers, and a portrait of George Washington. Flowers, leaves, birds, and landscapes feature prominently, along with depictions of women. He drew several illustrations of hands holding calling/visiting cards filled out with the names of friends and family members. One watercolor illustration of an African American man accompanies the lyrics of a minstrel song.

D. M. Dewey Color Printed Nursery Sample Book, ca. 1870s

The D. M. Dewey color printed nursery sample book contains over 50 pages of full color botanical illustrations that were marketed to individuals involved in the seed trade for use as advertisements.

Dellon Marcus Dewey (1819-1889) was a bookseller, publisher, art patron, and illustrator based in Rochester, New York. In the mid-1850s, he became renowned for his stenciled watercolor bookplates of botanical products. He sold the illustrations to people involved in the floral and nursery trade for use as seed advertisements. Dewey employed many immigrant artists to create hundreds of illustrations that would be compiled into sample books.

Dewey utilized a multi-layer production process called “theorem painting” in which stenciled transparent watercolors were used to gradually construct layers of color before final touches were added by hand. However, in the 1870s Dewey began to transition into using the more cost-effective chromolithographic color printing process. By 1881, his company provided over 2,400 varieties of botanical illustrations. In 1888 Dewey's business was combined with the Rochester Lithographing and Printing Company before he passed away the following year.

The sample book (14 x 23 cm) contains a mixture of both stenciled watercolor and chromolithographic designs that depict a wide variety of fruits, flowers, and trees in vibrant color and exquisite detail. Also present is a printed list of flowers and crops with their prices as well as a newspaper clipping concerning the Colorado State Fair and its fruit and agriculture exhibits.

The Crum-Ely family album (27.25 x 21.5cm) is a 34 page maroon plush velvet album containing 42 studio portrait photographs of individuals and groups living in Ohio and other Midwestern states. The people featured include members of the Crum, Ely, Folck, Matthias, Greer, Gilbert, and Riddle families. There are 28 cabinet photographs and 14 cartes de visite, and many pages include hand-written identifications of the subjects in the photographs.

The photographs were taken in West Unity, Bryan, Wauseon and Fayette, Ohio. There are also portraits from Osage Mission, Kansas and Bowman, Missouri.

Of note is the portrait of two women and a dark skinned man serving them.

There is a humorous occupational portrait of "Ed and Griffin" as tailors.

The Tyler-Montgomery-Scott family album chronicles multiple generations of the Tyler, Montgomery, and Scott families of the Philadelphia area from the 1860s through the 1930s. It includes approximately 275 items including studio portrait photographs, informal snapshots, newspaper clippings, postcards, letters, and other ephemera.

It includes approximately 275 items including studio portrait photographs, informal snapshots, newspaper clippings, postcards, letters, and other ephemera.

The album (33 x 25.5 cm) is string-bound with grey cloth covers. Most photographs in the album have detailed handwritten captions identifying people, often with their middle or maiden names as well as the location and date. The presentation of the album is not strictly chronological, especially in the latter half. The early generations of Tylers are represented in photographic formats such as cartes-de-visite, tintypes and cabinet cards, while later generations are represented in snapshots and postcards. When the album reaches the mid-twentieth century, it begins to resemble the modern family album with various forms of ephemera (newspaper clippings, drawings, letters, Christmas cards, etc.) supplementing the photographs of family and friends.

The album begins with a portrait of Frederick Tyler, his daughter Sarah Sophia Cowen, granddaughter Kate “Gwen” Cowen Pratt, and great-granddaughter Kate Pratt. George F. and Louisa R. Tyler as well as their children (including Sidney F. and Helen Beach Tyler) are also featured in the initial section of the album, along with many extended family members, friends, nurses, and pets. Among the family friends pictured are painter Frederick Church, writer Bret Harte, Leonor Ruiz de Apodaca y Garcia-Tienza, Gen. William Buel Franklin, patent lawyer and historian Woodbury Lowery, and the Duke and Duchess of Arcos (Jose Ambrosio Brunetti and Virginia Woodbury Lowery Brunetti). Several interior views of rooms in George F. and Louisa R. Tyler’s home on 201 South 15th St. taken in 1896 are also present, including a photograph of the “Children’s play room” that features their granddaughter Hope Binney Tyler Montgomery holding a doll. Hope, her parents Mary W. and Sidney F. Tyler, her husband Robert “Bob” L. Montgomery, and their children Mary, Ives, and Alexander are well-represented in the album.

Of particular interest are a number of photographs in different sections of the album that depict Theodore Roosevelt and his family. Some of these images are formal studio portraits, while others are more candid snapshots of Roosevelt with other people. One snapshot shows the family at play on the grounds of Sagamore Hill in 1897. Two photos taken at the White House including Helen Beach Tyler, daughter of George F. and Louisa R. Tyler and second cousin to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, are labelled “taken by Ted Roosevelt,” possibly referring to President Roosevelt’s son Theodore Roosevelt III. Helen Beach Tyler may be the “Nellie” who was the recipient of a partial letter included in the album which describes conditions at a wartime hospital (most likely in Italy) in 1915. Only the first two pages of this letter are included, and there is no indication of the identity of the writer. Helen Beach Tyler may also have been the principal compiler of this album. Supporting this possibility is the presence of an interior view of a bedroom at 201 South 15th St. (George F. and Louisa R. Tyler’s home) captioned as “Mother’s bedroom,” a signed portrait of Englishman Lytton Sothern captioned “Given to me by Mr. Sothern June 1872. Mr. Edward Sothern & his son Lytton Sothern sat at our table on ‘Oceanic’ my first trip to Europe,” and a portrait of Sara Schott von Schottenstein, Baronin von Prittwitz-Gaffron, bearing the inscription “to her friend Helen Tyler 1880.”

Other items of interest include portraits of Col. August Cleveland Tyler; several portraits of Brig. Gen. Robert Ogden Tyler; a portrait of French pianist Antoine Marmontel captioned “Mr. Marmontel Professor au Conservatoire gave us music lessons in Paris 1873-74”; a group portrait of Helen Beach Tyler, Mary L.
