Robert Altman Archive: Unfinished or Suspended Projects, 1960s-2000s

Forms part of the Robert Altman Archive. Documentation related to unfinished and suspended projects, 1960s-2000s, that Altman had an involvement with but were never produced. Materials for a project may include correspondence, legal and financial files, scripts and publicity files.

The unfinished and suspended projects series consists of materials related to projects that Altman had an involvement with but were never produced. The reason that any specific project failed may or may not be apparent from the materials and vary greatly. Materials in this series run from the 1960's through the late 2000's.

The type and volume materials also vary greatly from project to project. These can include correspondence, legal materials, legal materials from Jerome Walsh, business and financial materials, scripts and related materials, production materials including those used for research, materials related to publicity and distribution, and articles and reviews related to both the productions and the subjects of the productions.

Robert Altman Papers: Other Projects and Scripts, 2007-2008

Other Projects and Scripts (6 linear feet) consists of material sent to Robert Altman for consideration as potential film projects. Frequently, Wren Arthur, Altman's assistant, would read and critique these materials, and serve as the contact person for the individual submissions. The material is generally from 1989 to 2003, and arranged by author's last name. Where possible, a submission date is noted.

Other Projects and Scripts (6 linear feet) consists of materail sent to Robert Altman for consideration as potential film projects. Notably, the series includes scripts by Elmore Leonard, Kurt Vonnegut, Tim Burton, Donald Freed, and Anne Rapp. Frequently, Wren Arthur, Altman's assistant, would read and critique these materials, and serve as the contact person for the individual submissions. The material is generally from 1989 to 2003, and arranged by author's last name. Where possible, date is noted. Occasionally, a cover letter was included with script submissions. Many of these projects were never produced, by Altman or any other filmmaker.

In addition, the series includes correspondence, treatments, and other documents from various scripts and projects that were sent to Robert Altman and rejected as potential projects. Much of the material consists of script cover letters sent to Altman with the accompanying return correspondence written by one of Altman's staff. These "passed projects" are arranged alphabetically by the script writer's last name where possible. Among them include script submissions from Carrie Fisher, Billy Baldwin, Paul Newman, Joan Tewkesbury, Linda Yellen, and Stanley Tucci. In addition, Altman was asked to consider such projects as Thank You for Smoking, Benjamin Button, Michael, and The Killer Inside Me.

Also included are various script treatments organized alphabetically by script writer. These treatments, or script coverages, were generally written by one of Altman's employees and included a summary of the script as well as a recommendation to pass or consider the project. The materials under the "possible projects" heading contain those projects that were considered by Altman in some capacity and often contain extended correspondence.

The materials contained under the description "Open-Directing Projects" are printouts sent to Altman by Addis Weschler & Associates describing films in various stages of production that are in need of a director.

Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham Papers, 1907-1930

This collection contains material related to Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham, born in London of Spanish descent. At 16, he moved to Argentina to live with relatives and traveled widely in South America, Mexico, and Texas, marrying Chilean poet Gabriela de la Balmondiere. He returned to England to manage his family's estate in 1884 and spent the rest of his career as a follower of William Morris's socialist philosophy and supporting nationalist movements in Scotland and Ireland. He is particularly known for his historical, fiction, and travel writing. He is reportedly a model for characters in George Bernard Shaw's Captain Brassbound's Conversion and Arms and the Man. This small collection is in three series: Correspondence, Manuscript, and Printed Material.

The Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham Papers consist of correspondence, a critical manuscript, several photographs, and newspaper clippings. The collection is arranged in three series: Correspondence, Manuscript, and Printed Material.

The Correspondence series consists of letters to and from Cunninghame Graham, and several letters relating to George Matthew Adams' collection of Graham material.

The Manuscript series consists of a single manuscript by David Garnett entitled "An Appreciation of Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham."

The Printed Material series consists of one folder of clippings and miscellany relating to Cunninghame Graham.

One photograph of Robert Cunninghame Graham several of Gabriela Cuninghame Grahame can be found in the William Henry Hudson Papers.

In addition to this finding aid, the Special Collections Library holds a more extensive inventory of the papers.

Robert Case Papers, 1938-1943 (majority within 1941-1943)

The collection includes typed and handwritten letters by Case to Mary Catherine Damon whom he referred to in most of the letters as Kay Damon. In the letters, Case discusses his reasons for being a conscientious objector and daily life at Public Service Camp 21. The bulk of correspondence is from 1942 until 1943 The Civilian Public Service was made to provide alternative service for conscientious objectors due to religious objections against war. Civilian Public Service Camp 21 was a Forest Service camp located in Cascade Locks, Oregon and run by the Brethren Service Committee a part of the Church of Brethren. Many of the conscientious objectors were from various other Christian religions besides the Church of the Brethren. CPS Camp 21 opened November 1941 and closed July 1946. The men fought forest fires, worked on forest fire prevention and did camp maintenance and construction. Total number of workers who worked in the camp were 579 men.

The February 1943 folder includes two pictures and a postcard of the library fire that occurred January 1943 in the camp. The library included a collection of 2000 volumes, but after the fire was rebuilt and restocked with a new collection of 3000 volumes.

Robert Frost Family Collection, 1923-1988

The papers contain extensive correspondence and numerous photographs of noted American poet, Robert Frost and members of his family. Also included is a collection of privately printed chapbooks and Christmas cards which contain poems by Frost.

The research value of this collection resides in the correspondence and the photographs. It appears that the letters at some point may have been consulted by various Frost biographers, but their depths may not have been fully plumbed. The photographs offer a candid glimpse into several generations of Frosts, but also include a number of posed studio portraits. The collection as a whole complements the Robert Frost papers already housed in the Special Collections Library, as well as those at the Bentley Historical Library.

Robert Shaye-New Line Cinema Papers, 1958-2008

Robert Shaye founded New Line Cinema in 1967. The company began by distributing foreign, kitsch and art house films to college campuses and eventually grew to distribute and produce films in the Hollywood industry. The archive consists of five series: Personal, Business Documents, Projects, Articles and Clippings, and Audiovisual Materials. The documents range in date from 1958-2008.

The collection is divided into five series: Personal, Business Documents, Projects, Articles and Clippings, and Audiovisual Materials. All the series contain many of Shaye’s hand-written notes from notebooks to scraps of paper in which many of his ideas are written. Along with the notes, Shaye included many Post-it notes explaining some of the content. The majority of documents for the Projects series and all the material from the Audiovisual series are from The Last Mimzy, directed by Shaye and released in 2007.

The Personal series includes correspondence between friends and business partners as well as congratulatory cards and notes. The majority of the series consists of Shaye’s speeches made during awards ceremonies, general speeches for company events, movie premiere speeches and speeches for family and friends’ events. Many documents refer to Shaye as L.E. Moko. This reference refers to Pépé le Moko, a 1937 French gangster film directed by Julien Duvivier.

The Business Documents series ranges from 1967-2008 with documents focusing on New Line and consisting of correspondence, shareholder meeting notes, and film catalogs showcasing the variety of movies available for distribution that year. A binder with information on New Line common stock and correspondence can be found in an oversize box.

The Project series highlights some of New Line Cinema’s distributed and produced films. Highlights include storyboards for Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master, produced in 1988. The majority of documents are production documents for two films directed by Shaye, Book of Love and The Last Mimzy.

The Articles and clippings section consists of personal articles about Robert Shaye as a business entrepreneur and creative director, New Line Cinema articles, and miscellaneous film reviews along with trade magazines with issues dedicated to New Line or Robert Shaye.

The Audiovisual Materials series consists of The Last Mimzy DVD’s and a CD of video clips, trailers and publicity events. The DVD’s include production footage such as alternate beginnings, B-roll footage and different edited versions of the film.

Rosenberg Family Correspondence, 1938-2010 (majority within 1938-1946)

The 105 letters in this collection document the experience of a German Jewish family in the years immediately before, during, and shortly after World War II. Nathan and Johannna Rosenberg of Breisach, Germany, had three sons: Julius (1900-1942), Eugen (1901-1964), and Alfred (1911-2005). Eugen left for Palestine in 1935. Alfred, with his wife and her parents immigrated to the United States in August 1938. Most of the letters were written to Alfred by his brothers, his parents, and other relatives between 1938 and 1946. Most of the letters are from Julius, Emmy, Nathan, and Johanna; some of these they wrote from the labor camp in Gurs to which many Jews in Breisach were deported in October 1940. Contains typewritten transcriptions (German) and English translations for most letters.

This collection contains one linear foot of material and includes 105 letters between Rosenberg family members, friends, and acquaintances. It documents the firsthand experiences of a German Jewish family before, during, and after the Holocaust, and also includes the experiences of family members who emigrated from Germany in the years immediately before the Second World War. The letters were received and collected by Alfred Rosenberg, and as a result most are addressed to him and Alise Rosenberg and few are written by them.

This collection contains drafts, typescripts, and manuscript material related to Cowden's unfinished book, The Creative Process in Writing. Chapter subjects include Dickens, Keats, Meredith, E.B. Browning, Thoroeau, Whitman, Conrad, Carlyle, and Swinburne. More material related to Cowden can be found in the Special Collections Research Center's Hopwood Award Records and in the Bentley Historical Library's Roy William Cowden papers: 1924-1960.

This collection contains generally undated material related to Cowden's unfinished book, The Creative Process in Writing. Russell A. Fraser Papers, 1970-1992

Manuscripts, research notes and other material related to his writing and work as literary scholar.

The Russell A. Fraser Papers consist primarily of literary manuscripts and materials associated with their creation and publication: research notes, drafts, proof sheets, and some correspondence. The Papers do not reflect Fraser's personal life. Also present are a few original letters by and to Richard P. Blackmur.

Russell D. Smith papers, 1976-1989 (majority within 1976-1981)

Smith, a former juvenile and adult offender, became an activist for prisoners' rights, especially those of gay inmates, while incarcerated in federal penitentiaries across the country in the late 1970s. As a victim himself he was particularly interested in the problem of prison rape. After his release in 1980, he continued to advocate prison reform through POSRIP (People Organized to Stop Rape of Imprisoned Persons). The papers include an autobiography/chronology of Smith's experiences in and out of juvenile detention centers and prisons; extensive correspondence with friends in the International Committee to Free Russell Smith (ICFRS) concerning prison conditions, his personal safety, his transfers from prison to prison, his efforts to provide legal assistance to other inmates, and his plans for post-release activities; records of legal suits and complaints filed by Smith; and formal reports about Smith filed by prison officials. Copies of the POSRIP Newsletter (1980-1981) can be found with the Labadie's serial holdings.

Comprise autobiography, personal correspondence, 1976-1980, and legal records, 1978-1980.

Ruth S. Smith Papers, 1969-1986

Librarian and manager of technical information services at the Institute for Defense Analysis, Arlington VA. Expert on production and dissemination of technical reports by government agencies. Active in a variety of groups including the Committee on Information Hang-ups; later joined the staff of the National Technical Information Service. The collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, reports, notes, and articles.

The Smith Papers document the work of the COMMITTEE ON INFORMATION HANG-UPS from 1969 to 1986, related USER GROUPS from 1971 to 1981, the SHARED BIBLIOGRAPHIC INPUT EXPERIMENT from 1973 to 1981, and the DEPOSITORY LIBRARY COUNCIL TO THE PUBLIC PRINTER from 1974 to 1979. The collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, reports, notes, and articles. Also included are IDA LIBRARY/TECHNICAL INFORMATION SERVICES annual reports, covering the work of Smith and her staff between 1970 and 1980, and PUBLICATIONS of the Committee on Information Hang-Ups and other user groups. The bulk of the collection dates from the time when Smith served at IDA. Very little is from after she joined NTIS.

The focus is on the work of user groups in influencing policies on the pricing and dissemination of information of Federal government agencies, especially the Defense Documentation Center, the National Technical Information Service, and the Government Printing Office. A name index to correspondence in the collection is available.

Sam Karres Archive, 1955-2012 (majority within 1979-2010)

This collection includes 86 sketchbooks of the Detroit artist, Sam Karres as well as miscellaneous items and publications that either discuss or correspond with his artwork.

The Sam Karres Archive largely consists of sketches of the Detroit area during the 1980s as well as other types of documents that relate to the drawings. It has been divided into six series: guidebooks, small sketchbooks, medium sketchbooks, large sketchbooks, printed materials, and miscellaneous items.

Guidebooks: In this series, there are three binders composed by Sam Karres' friend, Denny Stavros that provide background on the artist as well as discuss the content of his sketchbooks that were donated to University of Michigan's Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library for The Modern Greek Studies Collection. Following the descriptions of the sketchbooks, there are indexes and appendixes that include some of Karres' writings, photographs that complement the drawings, and photocopies of pages from the sketchbooks. The binders are divided up by the dates the sketchbooks were given: December 9, 2011, September 28, 2012, and June 20, 2013. The sketchbooks have been designated as small, medium, or large by Stavros in addition being assigned individual numeric identifiers. There is also one hand-written list of periodicals and ephemera donated by Stavros on September 28, 2012. A few of the articles and all of the ephemera relate to Sam Karres.

Small Sketchbooks: This section consists of ten sketchbooks ranging in size from 3.5 by 4. 75 inches to 5.5 by 8 inches. The majority of these sketchbooks from this series dates from the late 1970s and contends with a variety of subjects including: restaurant scenes, animals, human forms and faces, boats, and especially Greek Orthodox religious figures and practices.

Medium Sketchbooks: This series consists of twenty-two sketchbooks, ranging in size from 6 by 9 inches to 9 by 12 inches, completed between 1977 and 2009. Some of the themes depicted in the drawings are: restaurants, dogs, horses, wrestling, daily life activities, Karres' family, and characters like Greektown Stella, International Cowboy, and performers that could be found in Detroit's Greektown.

Large Sketchbooks: This series consists of forty-seven sketchbooks, ranging in size from 11 by 14 inches to 14 by 17 inches. Although the drawings in this section were completed between 1955 and 1991, the majority of the images were executed in the 1980s. Some of the themes reflected in these sketchbooks are: human forms, restaurant scenes, tug boats, factories, weightlifting, performances, Detroit's Greektown, vacations, and Karres' aging parents.

Miscellaneous: The items in this series consist of letters, news articles, exhibition catalogs, a flyer, an awards booklet, and photocopies of photographs. These assorted materials that range in date from the late 1950s to 2004, were donated by Sam Karres' friend, Denny Starvos to the University of Michigan's Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library for the Modern Greek Studies Collection on September 28, 2012. They are arranged in numerical order according to the numbers Starvos assigned to them.

Simon M. Newman Papers, 1950-1985 (majority within 1955-1970)

Simon "Si" Newman was a leader in indexing, information retrieval, and machine translation research. He worked for the United States Patent Office, as well as National Insurance and his own documentation and insurance companies. His papers contain his research, own notes and writings, and correspondence with others in the field of information science, communication, and documentation.

The Simon Newman papers are divided into six series: American University, Conferences, Name and Topical, Personal, the United States Patent Office, and Writings. The papers mostly contain the extensive research that Newman did on indexing, machine translation and information retrieval, but also include papers from his time working for the United States Patent Office, American University, and for his own documentation and insurance firms. Also included are Newman’s writings on different subjects, including his work at the patent office and his studies on language and computing, some personal items, graded papers from his time as a professor at American University, documents from different conferences, and both personal and professional correspondence. The grand majority of the collection is paper documents; there is one small item of realia in the form of a banner from a conference, and a set of slides from teaching a class at the patent office. The papers cover approximately from 1955 to 1985, with the bulk of dates being from the sixties.

Small Southeast Asian Collection, circa 1808-1945 (majority within 1900-1918)

The Small Southeast Asia Collection contains photographs, postcards, and papers depicting the people and locations within several countries in the Southeast Asian region. Materials predominately focus on the Philippines with some featuring Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Burma (Myanmar) circa 1890s-1945.

Contains a grouping of six separately accessioned collections depicting people and locations in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Burma (Myanmar). Strengths of the collection include photographs and other visual materials that depict different communities living throughout the Philippines and other locations during the early half of the twentieth century. Some of the collection's items were created from the perspectives of foreign travelers and missionaries to the region that may describe people and places using outdated terminology. The majority of content is written in English, although captions in the Siam and Cochin China photo ablum are mostly in French.

Stan Nadel Papers, 1964-1987 (majority within 1964-1969)

Scrapbooks, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera relating to the life and activism of UM alumnus Stan Nadel.

Scrapbooks, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera relating to the life and activism of University of Michigan alumnus Stan Nadel.

The correspondence series is primarily composed of letters sent to Nadel either supporting or denouncing his actions. Also included is Nadel's correspondence with a representative of the NLF in Algeria.

The legal documents series consists of the papers the FBI and Michigan police compiled while investigating and surveilling Nadel.

The two scrapbooks contain clippings, correspondence, and ephemera that Nadel collected in the 1960s. Loose materials from the scrapbooks have been placed in folders stored alongside the scrapbooks. Each folder notes the contents of the scrapbook pages that were on either side of the loose materials. Many of the loose materials from scrapbook one are legal documents relating to Nadel's HCUA hearing. Note that the second scrapbook has been placed at the back of Box 3 to optimize storage.

The photographs series includes a sequence of photographs taken in South Vietnam around 1964 and a number of photos and negatives of Nadel and others in Ann Arbor.

Ephemera includes an anti-war petition CAV circulated, lists of contacts for potential donors to CAV, travel ephemera from Nadel's trip to Europe, and a small booklet of NLF stamps.

Stephanie Mills Papers, 1962-2005 (majority within 1983-2002)

Stephanie Mills (1948- ), moved to Maple City in Michigan in 1985 after twenty years of living in California. She has been deeply involved in environmentalism from her time at Mills College, where she came to national attention for her infamous commencement address as valedictorian in June 1969, "The Future is a Cruel Hoax". Stephanie Mills was a member of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America board of directors from 1970 to 1976, and later served as editor and advisor for multiple environmental publications. Her interests, as expressed in the correspondence and writings that make up the Stephanie Mills Papers, include overpopulation, deep ecology, ecofeminism, ecological restoration, the spread of technology, economic and cultural globalization, and the intersection of personal values and one's life in terms of environmental impact. Although Mills wrote a substantial amount of poetry during her college years, she is deservedly well-known for her nonfiction writings, particularly her numerous books on ecology-related subjects. As a working author and journalist, Mills published a large number of articles, essays, and book reviews in various mainstream and environmental publications across the length of her career. The Stephanie Mills Papers includes a large number of manuscripts, correspondence, personal materials, research materials, as well as audiovisual recordings of Mills speaking publicly on ecology and related issues. The correspondence is a rich collection of personal exchanges over many decades with friends, family, and fellow environmentalists. The writings and numerous manuscripts provide an unrivalled and detailed view of Mills's writing process.

The Stephanie Mills Papers consist of a wide variety of materials from across the length of Mills's career. The collection contains a large amount of correspondence spanning Mills's personal and professional lives, including incoming and outgoing correspondence with colleagues, family, friends, and publishers. The Stephanie Mills papers also contain assorted material from her time at Mills College, including original poetry, term papers, and materials relating to Mills's famous valedictory address delivered in June 1969. Although the Personal series is not large, it also contains a variety of materials including an original sketchbook, scrapbooks, and calendars spanning thirty years of Mills's professional life. Mills attended, organized, and spoke at a large number of public events related to her various interests, and materials relating to these compose the Conferences and Lectures subseries. The collection also contains materials relating to Mills's activism dating back to the early 1970s, including issues on which she was active in Michigan.

The Writings and Manuscripts series makes up the bulk of the collection and contains numerous drafts of Mills's books, in addition to correspondence and research materials relating to each project. A small gathering of Mills's original cartoons can be found in the Visual Art series, including original pen and ink illustrations for a 1975 publication on birth control. The Audiovisual series contains numerous audio recordings and two video recordings of Mills speaking in public as part of various events. The Computer Disks series contains 41 3 ½-inch micro floppy disks holding numerous documents relating to Mills's various books and writing projects, in addition to resumes and a small number of personal documents. In total, the Stephanie Mills Papers are divided into 10 series: Correspondence; Correspondence, Name; Personal; Professional; Activism; Writings and Manuscripts; Visual Art; Clippings and Reviews; Audiovisual; and Computer Diskettes.

The Correspondence series contains approximately 5 linear feet, Boxes 1-5, consisting mainly of correspondence with fellow activists, colleagues, and friends. Organized chronologically by decade and year, relevant photographs, clippings, and ephemera are generally kept with the related correspondence. Undated correspondence can be found at the end of the decade bundles in which they were received, with additional undated correspondence collected at the end of the series. Outgoing correspondence from Mills is generally separated from incoming correspondence as it was received, particularly sets of letters to Robert Schlichting and correspondence Mills wrote while residing at the Blue Mountain Center in New York State during 1983 and 1986.

The Correspondence, Name series contains approximately 3 linear feet, Boxes 5-8. The correspondence is gathered into sets relating to specific individuals with whom Mills held significant exchanges. These correspondents include personal friends as well as fellow environmentalists, including Chellis Glendinning, Barbara Dean, Felicia Guest, Hazel Henderson, William Horvath, Freeman House, Kraig Klungness, Jane Anne Morris, and Gary Snyder. Mills also corresponded with two young men serving in the Vietnam War, as well as enjoying a long correspondence with her mother, father, aunt, and other family members.

The Personal series contains approximately 2 linear feet, Boxes 8-9, and contains assorted material from Mills's time at Mills College in Oakland, California, including original poetry, term papers, and materials relating to Mills's famous valedictory address delivered in June 1969. Although the Personal series is not large, it also contains a variety of materials including an original sketchbook, scrapbooks, and calendars spanning thirty years of Mills's professional life, which can be found in the oversize Box 25. The scrapbook included in the Personal series also contains a number of clippings Mills gathered, often related to her valedictory address at Mills College in 1969. A sketchbook dating to 1966 contains original artwork by Mills, and materials relating to Mills's 1985 wedding to Phillip Thiel are also included in the Personal series.

The Professional series contains approximately 3 linear feet, Boxes 9-12, and includes materials largely related to Mills's professional appearances and public speaking throughout her career. Mills attended many conferences related to her field of study, including repeat appearances and tenure on organizing boards for events. The largest part of the series is correspondence, logistical and publicity information and other material related to Mills's attendance at conferences around the US and abroad. The material is arranged chronologically by year and month, with those events containing the largest amount of material provided first. The Conferences and Lectures subseries opens with a group of speeches Mills delivered on overpopulation, an issue which remained a concern across the length of her career. It is important to note that the Conferences and Lectures subseries also contains transcripts and position papers from a 1980 conference on technology named Technology: Over the Invisible Line? The subseries also holds transcripts from the 1993 Neo-Luddite Summit and 1994 Megatechnology and Globalization conference, both of which Mills later incorporated into the book Turning Away From Technology, which she edited and to which she contributed writing. The Professional series also contains a number of notecards Mills used during various lectures, although these are undated. A small amount of information related to Mills's hosting of discussion salons in a professional capacity for a Michigan organization in 1996 is also included in the Professional series under the subseries Salons.

The Writings and Manuscripts series contains approximately 11 linear feet, Boxes 12-23, and contains materials related to Stephanie Mills's writings spanning the length of her career. The series contains 6 subseries: Books; Novel; Editorial Work; Criticism; Essays; and Articles.

The Books subseries contains materials related to many of Mills's books, arranged chronologically by book. The subseries begins with a small amount of material related to a never-published book proposal, and continues with a large amount of materials relating to Mills's books Whatever Happened to Ecology?, In Praise of Nature, In Service of the Wild, Turning Away From Technology, and Epicurean Simplicity. The Books subseries contains numerous typescripts, drafts, manuscripts, galleys, and correspondence with publishers and others including proposals and editorial comments. The amount of material for each book varies, but the amount of material related to each book often makes clear Mills's painstaking drafting process. Research material, outlines, and notes are also often provided for each book. Turning Away From Technology, a collection of writing on technology and the modern world, contains a significant amount of correspondence and corrected manuscripts from individual contributors to the anthology; this correspondence is arranged alphabetically by contributor. It is useful to note that the transcripts of the 1993 and 1994 conferences relating to Turning Away From Technology can be found in the Conferences and Lectures subseries within the Professional series.

The Novel subseries consists of a manuscript for a never-published novel by Stephanie Mills which appears to date to the early 1970s.

The Editorial Work subseries contains material related to Mills's work as editor of various environmental publications, particularly EarthTimes in 1970 and Friends of the Earth's Not Man Apart from 1977 to 1978. The subseries contains correspondence and press related to the publications, as well as an account Mills wrote describing her editorship at EarthTimes. Mills also served on the advisory board of Earth Island Press and the Editorial Work subseries contains materials she edited for the organization. The serials have been catalogued separately from the collection.

The Criticism subseries consists primarily of book reviews Mills wrote for various publications, largely related to the environmental movement. The materials are arranged chronologically by decade. Materials include manuscripts and various drafts of the reviews as well as correspondence with various publications and clippings of the published reviews. The Criticism subseries is small, consisting of only two folders of material.

The Essays subseries contains a small number of Stephanie Mills's essays and book excerpts which appeared in various publications from the 1980s through early 2000s. The essays are very representative of her thinking, and the Essays subseries includes a proof of the book Consuming Desires edited by Roger Rosenblatt, to which Mills's contributed her piece entitled Can't Get That Extinction Crisis Out of My Mind.

The Articles subseries contains a number of articles Mills wrote for various periodicals, including Co-Evolution Quarterly, Synapse, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, EarthTimes, Clear Creek, and various other environmental and mainstream publications. Materials are arranged chronologically by decade unless large amounts of material related to specific publications appear. The subseries contains drafts and published versions of articles, as well as correspondence and research materials related to the various pieces. The 1970s sub-subseries also contains transcripts from a number of interviews Mills later shaped into articles, including interviews with Margaret Mead, Frank Herbert, Garrett Hardin, and Hazel Henderson, among other influential environmentalists.

The Visual Art series contains approximately .1 linear feet, Box 23, and consists of a small gathering of Mills's original cartoons. The series contains original pen and ink cartoon illustrations for a 1975 publication on birth control. Other visual art Mills created appears can be found in the Personal series. A small collection of proofs from the artwork from Epicurean Simplicity, original drypoint engravings by Glenn Wolff, can be found with the book itself in the Writings and Manuscripts series.

The Clippings and Reviews series contains approximately 0.25 linear feet, Box 23, and consists of primarily clippings and photocopies of reviews of Mills's books. The clippings and reviews are arranged chronologically by decade. The Other Clippings subseries contains clippings, copies, and publications not directly related to any of Mills's specific projects.

The Audiovisual series contains 38 audiocassettes, 12 microcassettes, 2 videocassettes, and 4 compact discs, Box 24. The numerous audiocassettes include interviews Mills held with environmentalists and a complete recording of the Conference on Megatechnology and Economic Globalization held in 1994 in Devon, England. Microcassettes largely related to Epicurean Simplicity can also be found in the Audiovisual series, as well as two videocassettes recording Mills's speaking at two events in 1992 and 1993. The four compact discs in the Audiovisual series contain audio of Mills speaking at events and giving interviews in the early 2000s. Audiocassettes and microcassettes in box 26 have been reformatted, and CD access copies have been created.

The Stephen D. The collection consists of three series: Liberty magazine papers and correspondence, Ayn Rand, and early radical movement literature. The Liberty magazine papers and correspondence series contains editorial correspondence, manuscripts, issue proofs, planning documents, published articles, and internal memos. The Ayn Rand series contains copies of early political work by Rand, articles about her, publications and correspondence from people and organizations that studied Rand and the movement associated with her, and a manuscript copy of The Passion of Ayn Rand, a biography written by Barbara Branden. Notable people and organizations in the series include Erika Holzer and Henry Mark Holzer, Nathaniel Branden, David Kelley, Chris Matthew Sciabarra, Aristos magazine, the Ayn Rand Institute, the Journal of Ayn Rand Studies, and the Atlas Center (formerly known as the Objectivist Center). Stew Albert, a founding member of the Yippies, was a political activist, writer, journalist, and unindicted co-conspirator in the "Chicago Seven" case in 1968. The Stew Albert and Judy Gumbo Albert Papers offer insight into the lives of two activists who were involved in anti-Vietnam war protests, members of the Youth International Party (Yippies), and had ties to groups such as the Black Panther Party and the Weather Underground. The collection contains a variety of materials, including manuscripts, FBI files and court documents, photographs, slides, and negatives, artwork, audiovisual material, realia, scrapbooks, and posters.

Street vs. New York Flag-Burning Case collection, 1966-1972 (majority within 1966-1969)

This collection includes arrest papers, clippings, correspondence, photographs, and court records related to the case Street vs. New York. The Physical Evidence file contains remnants of the burned flag.

The Flag-Burning collection is comprised of court papers, correspondence, news articles, and pamphlets relating to the case known as Street vs. new York, including parts of the actual burned flag used as evidence in the court proceedings. Court papers chronicle the position of the prosecuting attorney, Harry Brodbar, including the transcripts of the actual trial and the arrest order. There are letters of support for Brodbar from William F. Buckly, Veterans of Foreign Wars Magazine editor Paul W. Mills (Brodbar was a member of the VFW), and a member of the American Legion. Other items include newspaper clippings on the progress of the case, an issue of Legion magazine and photos of King County Asisstant District Attorney Harry Brodbar, and a flag burning event. A single autographed poster of an artist's interpretation of an American flag, which includes the signatures of Dave Dellinger, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, and Pat Paulsen, became the basis of a similar case involving a bookstore owner. It is the only expression of support on behalf of Street in this collection.

This case is a microcosmic study of how two conflicting forces- the Vietnam/Civil Rights movement on one hand and the conservative forces of law and order on the other, brought their grievances to the highest court in the land. The representations of the act of burning the flaf are a universal and enduring feature of protest. The act of burning a US flag by Sidney Street in itself is not unique-- that is to say it has happened before and certainly since-- however, the documentation of how a ruling on the act of protest through speech and symbolism took shape in the US Supreme Court has significant historical value. Although these are mostly papers from the prosecutor's files, this collection presents both sides of the legal argument in court. Moreover, Sidney Street is a representative, through this archival record, of a mass of 'average' US citizens who became fed up with war and inequality. This collection contributes to understanding the limits of authority and protest in public life and, as such, it is a very valuable resource for scholars of US law, civil rights, and the Vietnam War era.

Tad Tekla Papers, 1933-1964

Socialist and pacifist active in labor, civil rights, cooperative, and world government movements. The papers comprise scattered meeting minutes of various organizations, notes (some very detailed) on speeches and other social functions attended by Tekla in the Cleveland area in the 1930s, carbon copies of outgoing correspondence, and a collection of mailing lists. There is a considerable amount of print and nearprint material -- single issues of labor periodicals, newspaper clippings, for m letters, flyers, etc. The papers reflect to varying extents Tekla's activities in North Dakota as an organizer for the Civilian Public Service Union, a national organization of conscientious objectors performing alternative service during World War II; his efforts to recruit Cleveland auto workers for the Socialist Party in the late 1930s; and his membership on the national executive committee of the Socialist Party, the executive committee of the War Resisters League, the policy committee of Democracy Unlimited (ca. 1952-56), the Cleveland Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and the Committee for a Socialist Program and Action (ca. 1959-64). Tekla was heavily involved in the cooperative movement in Cleveland and to a lesser extent in the Saskatchewan Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in the mid-1940s.

The collection consists of material created and collected by Tad Tekla, individually and in various roles in socialist and labor organizations.The collection has been arranged alphabetically by topic.The most voluminous material includes: minutes and other records of the Socialist Party and the Socialist Party-Social Democratic Federation, ca. 1945-1958, including records relating to the Committee for a Socialist Program (founded by critics of the Socialist Party who wanted to serve as an "educational and organizational center within the Party"); records and other material relating to labor unions and labor issues, including records of the Civilian Public Service Union, 1946, and records relating to a crisis in the United Auto Workers and efforts by the Socialist Party to recuit auto workers, ca. 1939; "public meeting notes" by Tekla, which include typewritten notes and diaries relating to a wide variety of meetings and events, 1933-1955 (bulk, 1933-1936); material relating to the world citizenship movement, ca. 1945-1958; material relating to the cooperative movement, ca. 1936-1954; records of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), ca. 1948-1952; and outgoing correspondence, 1961-1964.

Technology Opportunities Program Data Archive, 1994-2005

Federal program to promote the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) by providing matching grants to community based organizations to help them use or provide telecommunications for new opportunities, especially for unserved or under-served groups. Records include project proposals, reports, sound and video recordings relating to individual projects, websites and other digital records.

The TOP Data Archive was initiated in 2004 by the University of Michigan School of Information. In addition to TOP itself, partners include the Community Informatics Initiative at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Educational Development Corporation, the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research, and the U of M Special Collections Library.

The TOP Data Archive is distributed, with physical materials in the U-M Special Collections Library and electronic materials online at one or more locations. As of 2006, the electronic materials are still being processed.

This idea behind assembling this data archive was to preserve important records concerning how local communities are entering the digital age, and create a foundational dataset for the emerging field of Community Informatics. This field examines communities and information and communications technology. It emerged in the 1990s from experiments with technology in communities which have been carried out worldwide, at the grassroots level and/or by means of national and international funding initiatives.

The TOP Data Archive includes 1) information assembled in the course of a federal agency managing its projects, 2) that same information re-purposed for research use, and 3) new information brought in for research purposes. The federal agency is the Technology Opportunities Program (TOP) within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce. TOP funded projects from 1994-2005, and is expected to continue managing already-funded projects into 2007.

The records in the TOP collection--that part of the TOP Data Archive which is in the holdings of the Special Collections Library--represent grant proposals submitted to TOP and project materials created by TOP and its grantee organizations, known as TOP projects, during the period of 1994-2005. The collection is not inclusive of all 606 TOP projects. TOP was able to locate and provide for the collection project documents and Audio/Visual materials for about 88 TOP projects. These were materials that the projects submitted to TOP over the years. The TOP project materials are represented by many different formats, including paper, multimedia compact discs, floppy disks, cassette tapes, and video recordings.

The records of the TOP collection are arranged into eight series: Proposals, Project Documents, Project Reporting System, Project CDs, Project Floppy Disks, Project Cassette Tapes, TOP and NTIA, and Video Recordings. Later additions may be found in Proposals, Project Documents, and Video Recordings in Box 17.

Ted Kaczynski Papers, 1996-2014 (majority within 1996-2005)

Contains mostly photocopies of materials created since Kaczynski's arrest in 1996, including correspondence, writings, legal documents, and prison documents. Material created prior to his arrest are photocopies obtained from the FBI which were to be used as evidence in his trial. Additional materials are expected to be added at a later date.

The Kaczynski Papers date from his imprisonment in 1996. Any materials from before 1996 are copies created, primarily by the FBI, for use as evidence in Kaczynski's case. At the present time, the collection of Kaczynski's correspondence is by no means complete. The Labadie Collection expects to receive important additional series of Kaczynski's correspondence at some future time. Kaczynski affirms that he does not sort out any hateful letters, but that in fact he received only a handful of such letters. The collection is divided into eight series: Correspondence, Legal, Prison, Publications, Writings of Ted Kaczynski, Clipping and Articles, Audiovisual and FBI Files. At the end of the finding aid some of these sections are continued as new material has been received over the years. Documents have been added to the Legal, Prison, Publications, Clippings and Articles, FBI Files and Correspondence in this order and begins in Box 88. The Correspondence series takes up the bulk of the collection. It consists of correspondence written to and by Kaczynski since his arrest in April 1996. The Labadie Collection has prearranged with Kaczynski that the identity of all but a small number of his correspondents be protected as far as possible. For this reason, the correspondence series is only available to the public in photocopied form, with names and addresses marked out. In some folders, correspondents personal information was deleted but in a later date the files were opened and the names were left intact in sections. The originals are sealed until January 1, 2050. The Labadie Collection has arranged the material by correspondent. In order to preserve anonymity, each correspondent has been assigned a number, and each number has been allotted a separate folder. For those correspondents prolific enough to fill more than one folder, additional folders have been designated with decimals. Within the folders the materials are arranged chronologically. Folders with red flags or tabs indicate a response letter from Kaczynski. Researchers should note that not every item in the Correspondence Series has been photocopied. The following types of items remain in the original collection but have not been made available as copies: envelopes and cards that do not have any messages on them; résumés and other documents that reveal too much personal information to block out; revealing photographs; and gifts such as phone cards or pencils. In some cases the correspondence from a particular individual was deemed so repetitive that only samples were photocopied. At the request of Kaczynski, some correspondents' identities have not been hidden; these names are provided in the box list. The Correspondence Series contains a small number of artifacts, mainly gifts such as stamps, stickers, pens and dried flowers sent to him by correspondents. These are in the folders with the original letters. Most have not been photocopied. Some printed materials are included in the correspondence, but most (including all books and pamphlets) have been moved to the Publications Series. Several correspondents sent materials to Kaczynski that, according to prison rules, he is not allowed to have, such as stamps, envelopes, etc. In those cases, the writer received a form letter from the prison indicating that the materials were not delivered to Kaczynski. Some of these letters are in the respective correspondents' folders, and the rest are in folder #0419. Some folders include carbon copies or drafts of responses by Kaczynski. In addition, Kaczynski's handwriting may be found on some of the correspondence in the form of log numbers or occasional notes or comments on the envelope or letter. The vast majority of the letters in this series were mailed unsolicited to Kaczynski by people he did not know. Perhaps significant to students of American Culture, these letters are overwhelmingly supportive of Kaczynski, if not his cause. Many assert belief in his innocence and express sympathy for his incarceration. A large number of the letters are from women seeking a romantic bond with him. Other letters are evangelical, while some are from autograph hunters or individuals attracted by notoriety. Some writers are concerned with the rights of the mentally ill, or appear to be suffering from mental illness. Mixed in among these correspondents are a few individuals who knew Kaczynski before his arrest, or who engage in serious communication about his case, his publications, environmentalism or his views on technology. A few letters were sent from other countries, but the bulk of them were sent from within the United States. The Legal series is divided into four sub-series. Copies of documents consist of items copied, primarily by the FBI for the court case. The documents consist of photocopies by his lawyers from FBI files. The FBI files are photocopies of documents found in Kaczynski's Montana cabin such as journals and tax documents he stored in his cabin. There are two codes on some of the documents; documents starting with a K number are encoded by the FBI and documents with a numerical code are Bates numbering used by Kaczynski's lawyers. Legal Communication contains copies of documents, notes, and letters Kaczynski sent to his lawyers and their staff and attorney work products. Legal Documents contains court documents and drafts of briefs. This sub-series does not include correspondence with his lawyers but may include correspondence to judicial officials relating to his case and court documents. Also included are Kaczynski's Sacramento County and Helena County jail records. Legal Notes and Research is comprised of research Kaczynski did for his court case. In some documents Kaczynski has written notes on an assortment of files with relevant information for his case. The Prison series contains prison forms such as CopOuts, law library request forms, appeals to prison regulations, and notes and research on a variety of issues. All the files were generated during Kaczynski's incarceration. The Publications series contains articles collected and often notated by Kaczynski, copies of four published works, and one unpublished manuscript. The four published works are Chistes, ensayos, rimas de Miami edited by Joaquin Delgado, Montana Dreaming, a play in two acts by Alex Gross, The Secret Life of Ted Kaczynski by Chris Waits and Dave Shors, and The United States of America v. Theodore Kaczynski by Michael Mello with corrections by TK. alt.fan.unabomber by Ross Getman is an unpublished manuscript. Material is also included on Chris Waits' book The Secret Life of Ted Kaczynski. Waits was a resident of Lincoln, Montana who wrote a book about Ted Kaczynski that Kaczynski claims was a hoax and largely fabricated. The Writings of Ted Kaczynski are all documents written by Kaczynski. Documents include musical compositions, Kaczynski's manuscript for his article, Ship of Fools, and several versions of his manuscript, Truth versus Lies, along with items relating to its expected publication. The edited version of Truth versus Lies was edited heavily by Beau Friedlander, publisher and editor-in-chief at Context Books. The Original version contains markings by Friedlander and his employees because it was a copy of the original that Kaczynski had sent to them; otherwise it is as Kaczynski originally wrote it with a few reparations of errors made in the transfer of the manuscript from Friedlander to him. These reparations include the addition of several missing pages as well as incomplete pages where text was blocked out. The missing pages were as follows: 78-132, 135-143, 168, 214, 266, and 293. The first folder of the Original version also contains an errata sheet prepared by Kaczynski for the manuscript. A couple of articles are included which Kaczynski wrote under the pseudonym Apios Tuberosa. More of his writings will be added as they are accessioned. The sub-series Refutation documents contain materials collected and organized by Kaczynski for the writing of his manuscript, Truth v. Lies. Clippings and Articles are an assortment of clippings and articles cut out from newspapers, magazines and newsletters. The clippings and articles fall into three categories. One is about Kaczynski's life such as his arrest, his trial and his family history. Second are technology, science and wildlife articles of interest to Kaczynski. Third are clippings collected by Kaczynski while he was living in Lincoln, Montana and found in his cabin. Except for the clippings found in his cabin, many of these articles were mailed to Kaczynski while in jail by his fans and correspondents. The Audiovisual series contains cassette tapes, which have been converted to CD, and VHS tapes, which are currently restricted until they can be converted to a more stable format. Audio recordings include an interview by journalist Theresa Kintz in 1999, which was published in Anarchy: a Journal of Desire Armed and the UK edition of Green Anarchist. The interviews require written permission from Kintz for access. The Henry A. Murray Psychology Study materials are from a psychology study Kaczynski participated in while a student at Harvard. The VHS tapes are television recordings of movies made about Kaczynski's life from the USA and Lifetime television networks and recorded by some of his fans. Last are the VHS tapes recorded by the FBI and used in his legal case. The recordings are of Kaczynski's cabin, items found in the cabin and the surrounding area in Lincoln, Montana. The FBI Files series consists of photocopies of documents found in Kaczynski's cabin in Montana by the FBI in 1996. The documents are in the original order the FBI photocopied his journals and documents, but some pages are missing and closed to the public. The pages are mainly from his journals written in English, Spanish, and a numeric code. The earliest entry is dated 1969 until February 1996. This includes all of his journals, maps, identification documents, math equations, correspondence and other miscellaneous documents. Each document was photocopied by the FBI and assigned a number that starts with the letter K. These documents can also be found in the Legal series which includes not only FBI numbers on each page but some pages include Bates numbering from Kaczynski's defense team. The FBI photographs sub-series are photographs taken by FBI agents after Kaczynski's arrest and were housed in photograph albums. The photographs have been taken out of the albums, but the original order of the photographs kept intact in folders. Photographs are mainly of Kaczynski's cabin, the land surrounding the cabin and downtown Lincoln, Montana. Other photos include photographs of bombs, other weapons and bomb making materials found in his cabin. The photographs were used in Kaczynski's legal case.

The Alternative Press Records, 1949-2018 (majority within 1970-1999)

The Alternative Press was a literary and artistic small press started in Detroit in 1969 by Ken and Ann Mikolowski. The press initially focused on publishing the work of Detroit artists and later became international in scope. The collection documents the press's management and publication processes, including those for its acclaimed subscription mailings, which contained poetry, bookmarks, bumper stickers, drawings, paintings, collages, and postcards.

The Alternative Press Records held by the University of Michigan Special Collections Library is the founders' full set of press records up until 1996. It contains items such as correspondence from poets, artists, and friends, manuscripts of poems and other writings, sketches, Christmas cards, event announcements, the press' printed products, subscription renewal requests and more. Records from all three operating locations of the press are included, although the records from business done from Grindstone City predominate.

The Alternative Press Records is divided into ten series: Artists and Poets: Correspondence, Writings and Ephemera; Business Records; Ephemera; Events and Organizations; Original Postcards; Printed Materials; Printing Process; Small Presses; 1996 accretion; and 2018 accretion. Records sorted by individual or organization (primarily Artists and Poets and Small Presses) are arranged in alphabetical order. Other series and subseries (primarily those containing correspondence, business records, artwork/writings, and event announcements) are arranged in chronological order to preserve evidence of the creative process and organizational decisionmaking.

The Anti-Imperialist League Collection, 1895-1928

This collection was compiled by Maria C. Lanzar-Carpio for use in researching her doctoral dissertation, "The Anti-Imperialist League" (University of Michigan, 1928). It includes a typescript carbon copy of the dissertation, as well as three letters to Lanzar-Carpio. The bulk of the collection consists of the papers of Erving Winslow (1839-1922), Secretary of the Anti-Imperialist League (Boston, Mass.), and the papers of Herbert Welsh (1851-1941), vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League representing Philadelphia. These include the organization's record books and correspondence with League members, U.S. politicians, and the press.

A large portion of this collection (765 items) was given to Lanzar-Carpio by Herbert Welsh, activist and vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League representing Philadelphia. This portion consists chiefly of correspondence and documents relating to efforts opposing American imperialism in the Philippines. Materials include records regarding the Anti-Imperialist League's efforts to document American atrocities, especially the cruel use of the "water cure," an inquiry into the death of Private Edward C. Richter, as well as Herbert Welsh's 1903 demand for the publication of General N. A. Mile's report on conditions in the Philippines. Also included is correspondence regarding organizational matters of the League, fundraising, the editorial management of City and State, other causes, and personal affairs. In addition to Welsh's personal collection, interspersed are an undetermined number of transcripts made by Lanzar-Carpio from original documents held elsewhere (cf. her dissertation, p. 9-10 and 269).

Erving Winslow, Secretary of the Anti-Imperialist League, provided Lanzar-Carpio with the organization's Record Books in five volumes, as well as a collection of papers and correspondence (597 items). Correspondence concerns the activities of the Anti-Imperialist League, especially related to Philippine independence, and chiefly includes Erving Winslow's outgoing letters as well as letters to him from members of the League's executive committee, along with letters from members of the U.S. Congress; U.S. and Philippine officials; representatives of public interest groups and the press; and other papers.

The Figures Records, 1973-2000

The Figures press was founded by poet Geoffrey Young in Berkeley, California in 1975. The records include correspondence, publication materials, business records and print materials.

The Figures Records are comprised of four series: (i) Name and Topical, (ii) Publications, (iii) Business and Financial, and (iv) Oversize Material. At approximately 34 linear feet, the records document the business affairs of a small press, as well as the professional life of its founder, Geoffrey Young. Spanning the years between 1973 and 2000, this material includes correspondence with writers, customers, and businesses, as well as manuscripts, production materials, and financial documents.

The Name and Topical series contains material related to writers and other associates of The Figures and Geoffrey Young. It is arranged by the individual’s name, and is further divided by the nature of the material (i.e. correspondence, clippings and articles, and flyers and announcements), although it is mostly correspondence. While much of this series is strictly business-related, there is a sizable portion that is of a more personal nature, which highlights the close relationships Young maintained with writers and associates.

The Publications series is the most voluminous of the four series, and is comprised of materials related to The Figures publications, which includes mostly manuscripts and production material. Production material includes galleys, proofs, negatives, invoices, and some correspondence. The series is arranged according to the name of the author, and is divided further by the title of the publication.

The Business and Financial series is divided into two subseries: (i) Business correspondence and (ii) Financial documents. Business correspondence is further organized by function, and contains material concerning book orders, submissions, permissions, and review copy requests, as well as awards, grants, and charity work. The financial documents subseries are primarily invoices, but also include quarterly reports. This subseries mainly documents transactions between book distributors, but also includes transactions and other financial information related to suppliers, typesetters, and printers. While this is not a complete financial record of The Figures, this series provides significant insight to the financial activities of a small press.

Oversize Material contains items that have been separated from the rest of the collection due to their larger size. This includes flyers and announcements, broadsides, calendars and production materials related to The Figures publications.

A 1924 series of letters is from churchmen sought as speakers for the Wesleyan Guild lecture series. Thomas Trueblood's (1856-1951) collection of correspondence spans the years 1919-1988 and is mostly comprised of letters from individuals sought as speakers for the Oratorical Association lectures or other Department of Speech activities. Notable correspondents include Robert Borden (8th prime minister of Canada), Charles Gates Dawes (30th Vice President of the United States), Charles Evans Hughes (11th Chief Justice of the United States), William Morris Hughes (7th Prime Minister of Australia), and William Howard Taft (27th President of the United States).

Tom Hayden Civil Rights Papers, (majority within 1962-1963)

Writings, publications, and clippings collected by activist and SDS founder Tom Hayden. The majority of the materials relate to the Civil Rights movement in the early 1960s, particularly the activities of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

Materials are arranged in three series: 1. Writings, 2. Organization records, and 3. Newspaper clippings.

The Writings Series consists of Hayden's essays and notes about student activism, democracy, and the civil rights movement.

The Organizational Records Series is composed of materials related to organizations Hayden participated in or associated with in the early 1960s. A good deal of the materials document SNCC's activities in Americus, Georgia.

The Newspaper Clippings Series dates from 1961 to 1963 and covers civil rights demonstrations in the South. Someone, likely Hayden, annotated some of the clippings with timelines and commentary.

Tom Hayden Papers, 1960-2015 (majority within 1980-1990)

The Tom Hayden Papers largely consist of materials generated while Hayden was in the California State Assembly and Senate during the 1980s and 1990s as well as the research he conducted for many of his books.

FBI Files: The FBI files are files Hayden petitioned to be released through the Freedom of Information Act in the 1970s. The bound documents are not in strict chronological order with many dates overlapping, since many of the documents are reports from various field offices from different parts of the U.S. reporting to central headquarters in Washington D.C. Different types of source materials such as photocopies of newsletters, newspapers clippings, pamphlets or any other relevant information are attached to some reports. Some pages are redacted in the reports and not all files are complete with pages missing. Some pages are marked by Tom Hayden with Post-It notes and other notes possibly used for his writings.

Files of interest include a transcript of Hayden’s testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in Washington, D.C. in regard to the Chicago riots during the Democratic National Convention in December 1968. Other documents of interest include reports on Tom Hayden’s first trip to Vietnam in 1965, and transcripts of phone calls between Hayden and Black Panther members during 1969-1971.

The FBI indexes contain a list of document numbers or pages generated in relation to Tom Hayden, a brief description of the document, a description of deletions made or information withheld from documents, exemptions to the deletions and cross references to other pages. The indexes do not match or list all the pages found in the archive. Referral documents means information or specific pages sent to other field offices or agencies such as the CIA.

In the Counter Intelligence Program and New Left folders the FBI the documents were generated either from headquarters (Washington D.C.) or different field offices. COINTELPRO and New Left locations are from different field offices throughout the US, and from Japan and Puerto Rico. The documents show the FBI’s monitoring and infiltrating of colleges and student organizations and their publications, activities and whereabouts. Included in the reports are examples of student publications and copies of articles in these publications and correspondence on how to counteract student organizations and their political activities from 1968-1971.

In the Jane Fonda FBI section, the Reports and Reactions folders contains reports from agents in regard to the Jane Fonda anti-Vietnam war FTA tour/show ( seen under various names such as Free Theater Associates or Free the Army and also the Peace Tour), which later became part of a larger peace tour in locations such as Okinawa, Japan and Manila, Philippines. Documents include reports of itineraries and names of people involved in the tour. Also included is correspondence received by the FBI from the public expressing negative reactions to Jane Fonda's FTA show and comments she made in public captured by the press.

The Freedom of Information Act folders include requests submitted by Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda’s lawyers for any government documents with information pertaining to them in the FBI, CIA, U.S. Department of Justice or NSA files. Subsequently, a lawsuit was filed in 1976 after certain documents were withheld by the CIA. Correspondence between their lawyers, Ira M. Lowe and Martin Echter and various government agencies can be found as well as correspondence addressing both Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda since they filed FOIA requests jointly. Any correspondence or law documents referring to both Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda have been filed under Tom Hayden and any documents referring only to Jane Fonda are in the Jane Fonda FBI section. Cases such as Joan C Baez v. U.S. Department of Justice and other cases are included.

1960s-1970s: The Writings folders contain articles written by Hayden in the 1960s-1970s. This is not a comprehensive list of all his articles written during this time period. The majority of the articles are not originals or drafts but photocopies.

The Notebooks section contains spiral bound notebooks of various sizes Hayden used to jot down notes, ideas, outlines for articles and meeting notes. Some of the notebooks outline his trips to North Vietnam. The notebooks are organized according to identifying information on each notebook such as year or location of when the notebook was initially used. Many of the notebooks include various loose sheets of paper or items such as stamps or business cards folded into the notebook. These items have been included in the same folder.

The Students for a Democratic Society section contains bulletins, reports, newsletters and publications under SDS from 1961-1964 and some undated documents. The Indochina Peace Project section has a selection of publications by the organization from 1972-1975 and some undated material.

Personal: The personal section reflects Hayden’s childhood, family, and interests. The files in this section include ancestry information, Royal Oak Dondero High School materials, University of Michigan materials, family greeting cards, and baseball clippings and photographs. The largest file in the Personal section includes ancestry reports Hayden had conducted in 1986 outlining and researching his family history and heritage.

Political Career: The Political Career section is organized according to year and type of campaign. In 1976 Hayden ran for U.S. Senate against John V. Tunney in the Democratic primary. He lost the Senate campaign, but later won the 44th State Assembly seat for the Santa Monica area in 1982. He later went on to serve 18 years in the California assembly and senate. Hayden served five terms in the California State Assembly from 1982-1992 and two terms in the California State Senate from 1992-2000. In 1997, he ran for Mayor of Los Angeles against Republican Richard Riordan and lost. In 2000, he considered a bid for the 42nd California State Assembly District Campaign, but reconsidered and instead ran unsuccessfully for City Council in Los Angeles. He also served as California’s first energy official.

As part of the California State Assembly, he served as Chair of the Assembly Subcommittee on Higher Education and Chair of the Assembly Committee on Labor. As part of the California State Senate, he served as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources Committee and member of the Senate Committee on Education, the Senate Budget Committee on Natural Resources and the Joint Committee for Review of the Master Plan.

The correspondence folders contain letters sent to Jane Fonda in regard to Hayden’s campaign which she supported through various fundraisers and campaigning. Also included are "thank you" notes addressed to Tom Hayden and a folder on business cards.The general correspondence section has various letters from constituents and from his political networks throughout the United States. Highlights include correspondence with Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Each campaign has a folder labelled propaganda which refers to campaign propaganda such as flyers, pamphlets and mailers used for each campaign.

Of note is the Campaign for Economic Democracy folders, an independent political movement started by Tom Hayden that led the way in progressive issues such as environmental protections, solar energy and renters rights. CED led the campaign for Proposition 65 in 1986 requiring labels on cancer causing products.

The press clippings sections includes clippings Hayden and his staff were reading or collecting during each campaign to research and measure public opinion.

Legislation: This section is divided into general correspondence, budgets, press releases and different types of bills. The Education, Environment and the the Metropolitan Transportation Authority(MTA) sections are three areas in which the archive has the most documents in which Hayden actively researched, authored or co-authored bills. The Senate and Assembly bills folders are legislation that Hayden authored or co-authored while in the Assembly and Senate. The folders are arranged alphabetically according to topic and some single subject folders contain several bills for that one topic. At the end of the alphabetical section the bills are organized by year.

Education: The education section contains correspondence, bills and drafts, and clippings about California’s education system. The higher education section focuses on the University of California and California State University systems as well as independent and community colleges. Admissions contains information about affirmative action across California’s higher education institutions as well as accusations of favoritism at UCLA. Other notable topics include governance, the cost of higher education and legislation aimed at making college more affordable, and the enrollment crisis, which documents how California’s higher education system struggled to handle an increase in the college-aged population. K-12 contains information about the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Notable topics include the potential breakup of LAUSD into multiple districts as well as the Equal Opportunity to Succeed initiative. Information on Toxic Schools and the Belmont Learning Center can be found in the environment section of legislation.

Environment: The environment section contains correspondence, clippings, bills, booklets, and notes about environmental legislation in Califorinia. One of the major issues Hayden tackled in the 1990s was toxic schools, which demonstates his concern for both the environment and education. Materials are arranged by theme, and the themes are then organized alphabetically. The six boxes are comprised of smaller bills that are arranged alphabetically. While there are no subheadings on the folders, materials within boxes are futher grouped by format, and the clippings and correspondence are in chronological order. There are materials in both English and Spanish.

MTA: These files contain information of multiple bills associated with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The files contain correspondence, general information, bill information, and clippings regarding MTA legislation. The files are organized by date with undated materials at the end of each section.

Publications: The Publications folders contain correspondence, drafts, book tour schedules and reviews of Hayden’s books. This section is not a comprehensive listing of all of Hayden’s book publications or articles. He contributed to a variety of newspapers and journals from 1980-2000 (please see the 1960s-1970s section for writings from that decade).

In the articles section folder sections are organized alphabetically according to topic and another group of folders are organized by year. These folders and their headings are topics created by Hayden and his staff for reference files much like the name and topical files.

International Interests: This section includes other countries Hayden was involved with or interested in besides Vietnam. Hayden’s Vietnam War activism can be found in the 1960s-1970s section.

One of the largest sections, Ireland, includes correspondence, clippings, and notebooks of notes he took while on several trips to Ireland. Please refer to the Publication section to see a section on his writings about Ireland as well.

The El Salvador section contains general information on El Salvador as well as folders on the Alexander Sanchez case. Alexander Sanchez is an ex-gang member from Los Angeles with ties to El Salvador and accused of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder. Charges against him were dismissed. Documents in this section include court documents, court transcripts and notes on the case.

Name and Topical Files: These files contain Hayden’s reference files for people and topics around the world. Several of the topics in this section were later referenced in his writing and legislation. Included in these files are newspaper clippings, reports, and correspondence. Notable topics are President Bill Clinton correspondence and Chicago 7 Trial newspaper clippings. Particularly well documented topics include Kosovo, Corcoran State Prison, and salmon protection.

Los Angeles Name and Topical Files: These files contain Hayden's reference files for people and topics in the Los Angeles area. Files include newspaper clippings, reports, and brief correspondence on people, administrative bodies and various topics relevant to LA. The construction of new buildings in the LA area is particularly well-documented, including especially sports stadiums and arenas such as the Coliseum. Photographs: The photographs contain Hayden's family photos and trips and pictures with various political figures including Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, John Kerry and Jerry Brown. Many of the pictures depict Hayden's involvement in social justice and environmentalist movements including his participation with Students for a Democratic Society and trips to Ireland and Vietnam. The unidentified folders contain more pictures of political events and protests between the 1960s and 1980s. Clippings: The clippings include articles from 1965 to 2009 that document Hayden's political career, literary pursuits,personal life, and interests. Many of the clippings contend with themes such as reflections on his time as a radical activist, political campaigns, environmentalism, and the MTA strike. There are also articles that pertain to general news events. Several of the clippings are in Spanish and one is in Japanese.

Tom Pohrt is a self-taught artist who works out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is best known as a children’s book illustrator and author. The collection documents Pohrt’s work as a children’s book illustrator and author through published works, correspondence with authors and publishers, manuscripts, and artwork.

This collection spans the years 1980-2004, and is comprised of published books, correspondence between Pohrt and authors and publishers, manuscripts, and artwork. The published books have been removed from the collection and catalogued separately. It is divided into 4 main series; Correspondence, Manuscripts, Ephemera and Artwork. The collection was divided into these four series to facilitate the addition of materials to the collection. The repository also holds a box of facsimiles of items in the collection used in an exhibit at the Ann Arbor District Library Exhibit in Fall, 2003.

The Correspondence series is arranged into subseries according to the correspondent or organization (usually publishing houses) in alphabetical order. Under each correspondent the materials are further divided into folders by date span and arranged chronologically. Under the publishing houses, materials are divided under subheadings according to project (book title) and arranged chronologically.

The Manuscript series contains manuscript material by Jim Harrison, Barry Lopez, and Tom Pohrt, and is arranged alphabetically by creator and book title.

The Ephemera series consists of calendars with illustrations by Pohrt, exhibit catalogs, flyers and brochures announcing events and public appearances, and other printed ephemera.

The Artwork series contains unbound preliminary drawings, paintings and sketches created by Pohrt to illustrate some of his most well-known books. The pieces of art are of various sizes and in a variety of media (e.g., pencil, watercolor, pen and ink). Many are stored in linen-covered cardboard portfolios, while others are tipped into handmade booklets and scrapbooks.

Tony Platt (1942-) is a scholar and activist focusing on criminal justice, race, inequality, and social justice. The Tony Platt papers (1942-2023, bulk dates 1960-1985) focus on his early career including his graduate education, postdoctoral activitites, and term as a professor at the now-closed School of Criminology at the University of California, Berkeley. After the completion of his dissertation later published under the name, "The Child Savers: The Invention of Juvenile Deliquency" and his postdoctoral fellowship with the University of Chicago, he returned to the University of California, Berkeley in 1968 as an Assistant Professor. Notable for his activism, professional engagement, and development of a "radical criminology", Platt was a key figure in shifting the School of Criminology from a professional program heavily connected to the police to an academic program centered on examining the issues of the field through understanding the effects of racism, colonialism and imperialism, and other factors popular with students throughout the 1960s-1970s. However, his career at the university was also shaped by a long fight for tenure and the debate over the School of Criminology's future. The Platt papers consist of 11 linear feet arranged in five series covering the early part of Platt's career. The Platt papers feature correspondence with scholars, faculty, and other individuals, research notes and drafts, course materials, files related to professional development activities such as conferences, clippings, legal files, and other collected materials reflecting Platt's research and professional ties.

Materials have been divided into 5 series.

1. Biographical: Primarily includes materials reflecting Platt's education prior to obtaining his Ph.D. in 1966, along with personal materials such as calendars, photographs, and later reflections of his work. Significant materials include those in the subseries for "The Child Savers". Materials are arranged by date.

2. Postdoc Activities: Includes materials reflecting Platt's time in Chicago where he completed a fellowship with the University of Chicago. Subseries include materials such as correspondence, research files related to his work, significant projects undertaken by Platt such as Legal Sevices to Youth and the Community Legal Defense Organization, and photographs taken by Bill Mares who worked with Platt in Chicago. 3. Academic Activities: Consists of the largest amount of materials in the collection and covers Platt's career at the Uniersity of California, Berkeley (1968-1976) with few materials afterwards. The University of Chicago Sit-In Protest series is the largest of the three, and the focus of the rest of the collection. Materials are concerned primarily with the two-week-long student-led occupation of University of Chicago administration buildings following the firing of professor Marlene Dixon in the spring of 1969. Materials include student and faculty statements, posters, news clippings, and official university documentation of the event.

Other items, such as a first edition with marginalia, photographs of letters from Pasternak to Eugene Kayden, and assorted newspaper clippings, help document the history of this unusual endeavor. The 1.5 linear feet of material span the years 1958 to 1988, with the bulk of the papers dating between 1959 and 1962.

The Dr. Zhivago series consists of two subseries: Pre-publication and Publication. Pre-publication includes newspaper clippings related to the Nobel Prize awarded to Pasternak in 1958, correspondence pertaining to the copyright negotiations with Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Editore, and promotional materials for the book's release. Most of the correspondence to Feltrinelli is carbon copies. Permissions Granted is correspondence between the Press and other authors regarding use of the novel in other publications. These letters date between 1960 and 1988. Additional material includes a limited amount of University of Michigan Press business records, galleys of the text, and other miscellaneous documents.

In the Eugene Kayden Translation -- Poems (1959) series much of the material is correspondence from Press directors Glenn Gosling, Ed Watkins, and Robert Erwin. Photographs of letters written to Eugene Kayden from Pasternak are included as well. The photographs are quite legible, and the text is in Russian. Related material, particularly the agreement signed between the Press and Eugene Kayden, is also in this series. Some of the folder dates will overlap in an attempt to maintain the original order of the materials.

Sochineniia [Collected Works] (1961), the Russian publication of Pasternak's poetry by scholars Gleb Struve and Boris Filippov, is the final series in the collection. Correspondence in this series, dated between 1959 and 1984, is arranged chronologically. A smaller amount of topical correspondence is arranged alphabetically by topic. As is the case with the previous series, some of the folder dates will overlap in an attempt to maintain the collections' original order.

The Media series contains two microfilms of the Collected Works , and an audiotape copy of the 45rpm vinyl recording of Pasternak Speaks . The tape documents a reading at Pasternak's home in 1958. Included are the poems "Night," "At the Hospital," "Literature Today," "To a French Musician," and an excerpt from "An Essay in Autobiography."

Vernon D. Tate Personal and Professional Papers, 1929-1989

The Tate Personal and Professional Papers document Vernon Tate's personal interests and activities along with many aspects of his professional career as a historian, librarian, and archivist between 1929 and 1989. Dr. Tate's papers contain correspondence, speeches, articles, meeting minutes, annual reports, newsletters, conference proceedings, press releases, dissertation research materials, and photographic and microphotographic research notes.

In December 1982, Dr. Vernon Tate donated a large collection of manuscripts and publications documenting the history of microphotography and his own career as a historian, archivist, librarian, and microfilm pioneer to The University of Michigan Libraries. This donation provided the impetus for the creation of the Power Collection for the Study of Scholarly Communication and Information Transfer in the Special Collections Library. The Power Collection is named in honor of Dr. Tate's long-time friend, Eugene B. Power, the founder of the micropublishing firm University Microfilms, Inc.

Dr. Tate's donations to the Power Collection contain over 140 linear feet of manuscripts, including his own personal and professional papers, an extensive collection of records of the National Microfilm Association (NMA), and the Microfilm Pioneers Collection which contains the papers of several of Dr. Tate's colleagues concerning microphotography and the activities of NMA. In addition, Dr. Tate donated an extensive collection of serials and monographs relating primarily to the fields of photography, microphotography, and archives.

The Tate Personal and Professional Papers document Vernon Tate's personal interests and activities along with many aspects of his professional career between 1929 and 1989. This group does not, however, include files from his work as Executive Secretary of the National Microfilm Association. Those materials can be found in the National Microfilm Association Records in this repository.

Dr. Tate's papers contain correspondence, speeches, articles, meeting minutes, annual reports, newsletters, conference proceedings, press releases, dissertation research materials, and photographic and microphotographic research notes. In addition, the collection contains log books (diaries), which contain his thoughts and notes on his personal and professional activities, although the log books will not be available for research until October 1, 2009.

Scattered materials concern Tate's activities between 1929 and 1935 as a student, researcher,and microfilmer for the Library of Congress. Included is correspondence, extensive research materials on the port of San Blas (his dissertation topic), and articles on maritime history and photography.

Large portions of several series concern the years between 1935 and 1946 during which Tate headed the photographic archives and research division of the National Archives and then served in the Navy during World War II. Almost two-thirds of the correspondence series and nearly half of Tate's speeches and writings date from this period. Besides these materials, the files contain inter-office memoranda, literature and notes on microphotography, and notes on his own experiments. Since Tate was the seventh professional staff member hired by the National Archives after its founding in 1935, the files include materials on the early development of the agency and the beginnings of the photographic laboratory and microfilm operation.

By the mid-1930's Tate was already one of the recognized authorities in the rapidly developing field of microphotography. In addition to his work at the National Archives, the files concern such topics as his work as editor of the Journal of Documentary Reproduction, 1938-1942; the early history of the American Documentation Institute and the Federation Internationale de Documentation; and his involvement in the work of the Microcard Committee. A small amount of correspondence concerns the establishment and early history of the National Microfilm Association, 1944-1946, before Tate became an officer.

The amount of material declines significantly for the years after 1946. Materials relating to his work as Director of Libraries at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and subsequently as Librarian and Archivist at the U.S. Naval Academy appear, but they are smaller in quantity and less complete than the materials on earlier years. Although the Tate Papers do not concern his work as an officer of the National Microfilm Association, they do document many professional activities not connected with NMA. Included is material on his various library and archival positions and his involvement with such organizations as the American Documentation Institute and the Federation Internationale de Documentation.

In addition to documenting many of Tate's professional activities, his papers concern family matters and personal interests. The correspondence series includes a small sequence of family letters exchanged between Tate and his wife, parents, and other relatives. The personal interests series contains information on his hobbies and interests, especially in naval history and other nautical matters, but also in such areas as antiques, art, books and printing, history, and libraries.

American biographer; participated, researched, and wrote about individuals involved in movements central to New York City's Lower East Side, including the Beats and the Punks. Papers include correspondence, notes and notebooks, clippings, other resources, manuscripts (drafts, proofs, galleys), photographs, and audiovisual materials.

The Correspondence series is comprised of approximately 2.5 linear feet of material, foldered alphabetically by author with individual letters and cards within each folder arranged chronologically. The majority of the correspondence discusses Bockris' professional endeavors, including correspondence between publishers, lawyers, and sources. Additionally included are some personal correspondence such as letters, notes, and cards. Within the series are several notable, lengthy correspondence partners including Isabelle and Jean Louis Baudron, 1984-1997 (5 folders); Gerard Malanga, 1977-1996 (10 folders); Miles, 1977-1998 (7 folders); Elvira Peake, 1984-1999 (5 folders); Claude and Mary Beach Pelieu, 1983-1996 (5 folders); and especially Ingrid von Essen, 1983-2001 (31 folders); Christopher Whent, 1985-2002 (7 folders); and Andrew Wylie, 1974-2000 (41 folders). Correspondence with von Essen is of particular note as she was both a professional collaborator and personal friend of Bockris, and in addition to incoming correspondence, outgoing correspondence from Bockris to von Essen, 1977-2001 (17 folders), is included in the series.

The series also includes correspondence from notable individuals, poets such as Anne Waldman and Allen Ginsberg, John Giorno, Jeff Goldberg, artists and personalities including Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Art Garfunkel, Bobby Grossman, John Waters, Aram Saroyan, and book subjects Bebe Buell, William Burroughs, Debbie Harry, and Terry Southern.

The Notebooks and Journals series is comprised of approximately .5 linear feet, and consists of 17 volumes or items (including one that is oversize). The volumes' contents seem to span the range of Bockris' subjects, although it is difficult to discern the exact contents given the handwriting.

The Topical Files series is approximately .25 linear feet, and contains materials surrounding important topics and persons to Bockris' work. Included in the files are coverage on the subject matter of writing biographies, manuscript fragments, and information on various personalities including those that were featured in some of Bockris' work, like Lydia Lunch, collaborators including Andrew Wylie and Gerard Melanga, and individuals whom Bockris pursued as potential biography subjects such as Art Garfunkel.

The Events series is approximately .1 linear feet, and contains gallery invitations and speaking engagements sent to Bockris. These materials do not correspond specifically to any of Bockris' works, nor do they involve him as an artist or speaker, and thus are separated into their own series.

The Muhammed Ali series is approximately .5 linear feet and pertains to the works that Bockris wrote about Muhammed Ali. Although one of the smaller series of Bockris' works within the collection, it still contains a multitude of information, and is broken down into six subseries: Correspondence; Notes and Notebooks; Scrapbook; Clippings and Articles; Manuscripts; and Reviews. The correspondence is primarily from 1993-2002 and consists of letters between Bockris and his publishers. Within this subseries, items are arranged chronologically by date. The Notes and Notebooks, and Scrapbook subseries both contain Bockris' thoughts and collections of information he gathered on Muhammed Ali. Similarly, the Clippings and Articles subseries contain assorted clippings and photocopies of text about Ali. The Manuscript subseries contains drafts of four works that Bockris wrote about Ali, and the Reviews subseries contains clippings and photocopies of reviews of these works.

The Beat Punks series is approximately 1.5 linear feet, and contains materials related to the subjects within Bockris' Beat Punks book (also published as NYC Babylon) and related works. Correspondence within this series is primarily from Bockris' publisher. The series contains significant information on Allen Ginsberg, including a scrapbook, clippings and articles, and the National Arts Club Literary Aware Dinner manuscript. Other notable individuals mentioned in this series include clippings and articles related to Lydia Lunch and a transcript documenting an interview between Bockris and Legs McNeil.

The Blondie/Debbie Harry series is approximately 2.25 linear feet, and its contents pertain to both Blondie and its lead singer Debbie Harry. Also heavily represented is Blondie member (and Harry's former partner), Chris Stein. Although the Correspondence subseries mostly concerns the book and publishers, there is a handwritten letter by Debbie Harry. The Transcripts subseries features numerous transcriptions of interviews and conversations featuring both Harry and Stein. Other resources noted within the series include both song lyrics and visual materials such as images of both Harry and Blondie.

The manuscript series fastidiously documents the evolution of the Making Tracks monograph written by Bockris, Harry, and Stein. Included are multiple, often annotated drafts of the manuscript beginning with when it was still referred to as Above Fourteenth Street. This documented evolution continues even after the manuscript was renamed to Making Tracks, and includes not only drafts but galleys, sample layouts, second blues, and book covers. In addition to this manuscript, also included are drafts of From Eat to the Beat to Autoamerican and Meeting Famous People.

The smallest series (.2 linear feet) within the collection documenting one of Bockris' works, the Bebe Buell series documents Bockris' and Buell's biography, Rebel Heart. The Correspondence subseries is comprised of two handwritten letters to Bockris from Buell. However, the most notable items within the series are a series of photocopied love letters written by Elvis Costello to Buell. Additionally included are several drafts of Rebel Heart, and documentation of legal issues concerning quotes within the book.

The William Burroughs series is 1.25 linear feet and contains an assortment of materials used by Bockris to write his works on Burroughs. The Correspondence subseries includes letters from publishers and sources, as well as from Burroughs himself, including a small painting sent to Bockris as a Christmas card. The Events subseries includes several gallery invitations specifically sent to Bockris, as well as postcards of his own speaking engagement, In America All We Do is Work.

The Transcripts subseries includes transcripts featuring a wide breadth of individuals such as William Burroughs, James Grauerholz, Richard Hell, Debbie Harry, Christ Stein, Allen Ginsberg, Jean Michel Basquait. Also found in this subseries are transcripts from Burroughs interviewing Patti Smith.

Finally, the Manuscript subseries includes several drafts of many of the works Bockris wrote about Burroughs (including A Report from the Bunker and With William Burroughs). Also included are drafts of shorter works, including the cover, back copy and page mock ups of William Burroughs Cool cats, furry cats, and aliens, but no purring, which Bockris printed in a limited edition of only 100 copies, each of which he signed and numbered.

The John Cale series is .75 linear feet and documents the writing of Cale's biography, as well as the related disagreements about its publication between Cale and Lou Reed.

The Correspondence subseries primarily consists of letters from Lou Reed, Sylvia Reed, and Chris Whent, documenting legal issues and disagreements between Cale and Reed, concerning their past as members of the Velvet Underground, and potential future as collaborators. Also of note are items from Mo Tucker (another member of the Velvet Underground).

Also included is the Other Resources subseries, which contains papers about Cale, his assorted lyrics and writings, and album covers. The Manuscripts subseries provides insight into Cale's biography from proposal, to early draft, to proof, to galleys. The series concludes with clippings and photocopies of What's Welsh for Zen reviews.

At approximately 12.5 linear feet, the Lou Reed series is the largest within the Bockris Collection. Each of its subseries, Correspondence; Notes and Notebooks; Clippings and Articles; Events; Sketchbooks; Transcripts; Other Resources; Manuscripts; and Reviews are sizeable and detailed, providing an enlightening look into Bockris' research and writing processes.

The Correspondence subseries contains numerous letters both from publishers and sources, the most notable of whom include Shelley Corwin (nee Albin), Reed's former girlfriend, Elizabeth Kronstad, Reed's first wife, and Andrew Wylie, Bockris' agent and former collaborator who struck up a friendship with Reed. The Notes and Notebooks subseries is extensive, containing a variety of notes, some of which were arranged by Bockris by subject, and others which were arranged by year. Bockris also participated in several speaking engagements related to his Lou Reed book, the promotional materials for which are documents in the Events subseries.

In addition to notes, Bockris's research also generated a vast quantity of clippings and articles (11 folders), serials and books (7 folders), and an assortment of Lexis-Nexis article print outs, spanning the years 1950 – 1989. Bockris also filled seven volumes of sketchbooks (the Sketchbooks subseries) with Lou Reed Content. Also utilized as source material, Bockris conducted numerous taped interviews, many of which were transcribed and are contained within the Transcriptions subseries. Interviewees of note include Shelley Corwin (nee Albin), Roberta Bayley, Legs McNeil, Richard Mishkin, Billy Name, Bob Quine, Lou Reed, Maureen Tucker, Chris Whent, and Andrew Wylie.

Other Resources also played a role in Bockris' research, and may be found in the subseries of the same name. Included are Reed's college magazine, The Lonely Woman Quarterly, Lou Reed: The Collected Lyrics, and information from Lou Reed's fan club. However, the most extensive portion of this series is the Manuscript subseries which documents Bockris' Transformer: The Lou Reed Story from early proposal all the way to U.S. galleys as well as the U.K. edition galleys, providing a meticulous documentation of the book's evolution. The drafts are organized based on the various arrangements that Bockris utilized. Similar to the arrangement of the Notes and Notebooks subseries, this results in some of the drafts organized chronologically by year range, and others organized by subject or chapter. Numerous final drafts are also included, which reveal different versions of the monograph in its entirety. The series concludes with the Reviews subseries, containing clippings and photocopies the book's reviews.

The Keith Richards series is approximately 3.75 linear feet, and documents Bockris' writing of Keith Richards. Most of the Correspondence subseries is comprised of communications from publishers and fans, however, there are several handwritten letters from Richards' former girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg, although they merely describe materials she sent to Bockris as well as signed certification that the information she provided is truthful. The arrangement of the Notes and Notebooks subseries remains as Bockris sent it, chronological and divided by year. Additional background materials may be found in the Sketchbook, Scrapbook, and Clippings and Articles subseries, the last of which includes copies of Rolling Stones newsletters Beggars Banquet and Basement News. Bockris also made use of taped interviews, the transcripts of which are provided in the Transcripts subseries, including one between him and Marianne Faithful. The Manuscript subseries contains an assortment of drafts of Bockris' work on Richards. These range from drafts focusing on specific people or time period to edited galley proofs and book covers. This broad spectrum of the manuscript provides a view inside Bockris' writing process and style. Finally, the Reviews subseries includes clippings and photocopies of reviews of this work.

The Patti Smith series is composed of approximately .75 linear feet of materials, documenting Bockris' writing of Patti Smith: A Biography. The Correspondence series primarily documents the communication between Bockris and his publisher, Fourth Estate. The remaining subseries, Notes and Notebooks; Scrapbook; Events; Clippings and Articles; and Other Resources all provide background materials for Bockris' writing.

The Manuscript subseries recounts Bockris' writing process, beginning with the early draft of Smith's biography, and ending with several portions of the finished work including the unbound galley, index, cover image, and image galleys. Also included are several drafts documenting the process Bockris underwent to get from early draft to completed galley. The final subseries, Reviews, provides clippings and photocopies of the book's reviews.

At .25 linear feet, the Terry Southern series is one of the smaller series in the collection that describes one of Bockris' works. Correspondence in this series includes a letter written by Southern, as well as several letters by Lee Hill (a Terry Southern biographer) written to Bockris. Also included is a Transcript subseries which features the transcript of a conversation between Southern and William Burroughs. The largest portion of the series is the Other Resources subseries containing several works by Southern and Hill. Unlike the other series documenting Bockris' works, the Southern series provides very little Manuscript subseries content. Indeed, the only item is an untitled early draft. Thus, in this case, little insight is provided into Bockris' writing process or the final work.

The Velvet Underground series is approximately .5 linear feet, and documents the making of Bockris' Uptight: The Story of the Velvet Underground. The Correspondence subseries mainly contains communication from publishers. The bulk of the contents in this series are research materials, including subseries Notes and Notebooks; Clippings and Articles; and Other resources which includes an interview with former Velvet Underground member Moe Tucker. The Events subseries provides information on several speaking engagement of which Bockris was a part.

The Manuscript subseries has two drafts, but is primarily composed of galleys, both for the U.K. edition in 2002 and the new edition. The Reviews subseries contains numerous clipped and photocopied reviews of the book. Also of interest is that some of Bockris' materials, ranging from notes to drafts also appear to have been referenced and utilized during the writing process of his Transformer: The Lou Reed Story book. The Andy Warhol series is approximately 3.5 linear feet. The bulk of the Correspondence subseries is comprised of communication between Bockris and his publishers. However, there are two letters of note, both from Warhol's brother, John Warhola, written directly to Bockris. Also included with one of these letters is a photograph of Bockris at Warhol's grave, taken by Warhola.

Much of the background research for the work is found in the Notes and Notebooks, Clippings and Articles, and Other Resources subseries. The Events subseries includes promotional materials for several speaking engagements made by Bockris as well as student feedback on a lecture presented by Bockris. The Manuscripts subseries documents the evolution of Bockris' The Life and Death of Andy Warhol from original manuscript to page proofs. Additionally included are drafts of related pieces written by Bockris including How I wrote a Biography of Andy Warhol and Pittsburgh Andy. Also included is the Reviews subseries which provides numerous clippings and photocopies of reviews of Bockris' pieces on Warhol. The series concludes with the Scripts subseries which includes several scripts based on Warhol's life and Bockris' biography. These include a potential script for Andy Warhol the Motion Picture and several annotated copies of the script Pop.

The Proposals and Drafts series is approximately .75 linear feet and documents an assortment of research on proposed subject including Ornette Coleman, Dennis Hopper, Fred Hughes, and Charles Plymell. Also included are collaborative pieces with Andrew Wylie like Which Way Did Doris Day Go? drafts of Bockris' shorter works such as Negative Girls and some of his Gadfly pieces. The Photographs series is approximately 2.25 linear feet. The photographs are primarily arranged by subject, including many of the subjects of Bockris' books (Ali, Blondie/Debbie Harry, Burroughs, Cale, Reed, Richards, Smith, the Velvet Underground, and Warhol). Photographs featuring unidentifiable or multiple subjects were filed under "Various." Additionally, there is a folder of negatives. Also included are three volumes of Bockris Contact sheets, chronologically divided into three binders, and covering 1972-2001 in total. Three more binders create the three volumes of Photographs by Victor Bockris, with each binder focusing on a different subject, Burroughs, Warhol, and Ginsberg respectfully. Finally, additional photographic materials may be found in the two oversize boxes, including the AliWarhol 24 Panel Piece, a Debbie Harry photograph, and various photographs. The Audiovisual subseries is approximately 2.5 linear feet, primarily containing cassettes of taped interviews conducted by Bockris. Of particular interest are interviews including Burroughs, Jaguar, Warhol, Ali, John Warhola (Warhol's brother), Buell, Harry, Stein, Cale, the Allen Ginsberg Memorial at the Poetry Project, Gerard Melanga, Legs McNeil, Roberta Bayley, Chris Whent, and Sterling Morrison. Also included among the cassettes are various published materials such as Lou Reed albums. In addition to the cassettes, a Terry Southern CD is also included. The VHS tapes found within this series are primarily published and feature Lou Reed. Similarly, the LPs in this series are all published. Most of these records feature Bockris' subjects including Blondie/Debbie Harry, Cale, Reed, and the Velvet Underground. Other notable individuals include Susan Sontag and Maureen Tucker. Voltairine De Cleyre was a prominent anarchist poet, lecturer, and writer. This collection spans the years 1876 to 1914 and is made up of correspondence, manuscript and print poems and essays, and one photograph.

Ward Allan Howe Papers, 1922-1972 (majority within 1936-1960)

This collection is comprised of letters addressed to Ward Allan Howe (1900-1977), a New York Times travel writer, between the dates of 1936 and 1960. These letters have been saved for their noteworthy signatures. All of the letters are addressed to Howe except where noted. Acquired with 6,900 positive photographs, 4,289 color transparenices, and approximately 22,00 negatives. (The aforementioned visual material is housed separately as the Ward Allan Howe Photos.)

This collection contains two series of materials (1. letters to W. A. Howe; 2. various documents related to W. A. Howe) that were created between 1922 and 1972. An anarchist and editor of Road to Freedom, Van Valkenburgh assisted Emma Goldman in typing and distributing her writings and correspondence. The collection documents his activities in the Socialist Party in Schenectady, N.Y.; as secretary for the Sociology Club, a group in Schenectady organized to study and debate social problems; as editor of Road to Freedom and Spanish Revolution; and as supporter of anarchist causes, including the Sacco-Vanzetti Case and the Spanish Civil War. There is a collection of articles by Van Valkenburgh and others, as well as correspondence with many radical leaders, including Leonard D. Abbott, Stella Ballantine, Gustav F. Beckh, Alexander Berkman, Karl Dannenburg, Hippolyte Havel, Herman Kuehn, Maximilian Olay, Upton Sinclair, and Carlo Tresca. The War Resisters League is a pacifist organization that promotes anti-war initiatives using nonviolent actions. The records contain scattered documentation of the activities of the organization from the late 1960s through the 1980s.

The War Resisters League records were acquired by the Special Collections Library in 2014. The records provide scattered documentation of the activities of the organization from the late 1960s through the 1980s. The collection includes textual material, audio and moving image material, publications, and artifacts that characterize the anti-war mission of the organization.

Two audio cassettes and six reel to reel audi tapes from box 10 have been reformatted.

William and Charlotte Kaufman Papers, 1911-2005 (majority within 1932-2002)

William Kaufman, M.D., Ph.D (Physiology), discovered that niacinamide (vitamin B-3) can effectively treat symptoms in arthritic patients. This collection documents Kaufman's niacinamide research, his work as an author of academic and popular medical articles, and his personal life. William's wife's, Charlotte (Schnee) Kaufman's papers are also included, especially those relating to the Family Life Film Center of Connecticut.

The William and Charlotte Kaufman Papers document many facets of both William and Charlotte Kaufman's professional and personal lives. The collection has been arranged into fourteen series: Niacinamide, Other Medical Topics, Other Writings, General Correspondence, Professional Organizations, Personal, Charlotte Kaufman, Patient Records, Computer disks, Artwork, Audiovisual, Slides, Photographs and Negatives, and Realia.

William Kaufman's research in the therapeutic use of niacinamide and its effect on arthritis is documented by professional correspondence, correspondence with interested members of the public, patient records, published and unpublished writings, notes, photographs and negatives, and relevant writings by others. Kaufman's involvement in various medical organizations and his work as an author of popular and academic articles are also well represented. Drafts of plays and poems, an autobiography, sketchbooks, and paintings show William's creative work as an amateur artist, playwright, and poet. Papers relating to Kaufman's personal life are also present in the collection.

Material relating to Charlotte Kaufman mostly stems from her work as Executive Director of the Family Life Film Center of Connecticut, Inc. A wide range of materials document the workings of the Film Center: correspondence, leaflets, memos, discussion notes, training materials, posters, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Charlotte's activity in other community organizations and her personal life are represented by photographs, schoolwork, biographical material, creative writings, invitations, newspaper clippings, and correspondence.

Series Level Scope and Contents Notes:

The Niacinamide series consists of approximately 4.5 linear feet and provides insight not only into Kaufman's research and writing on niacinamide as a therapy for arthritis but also into his research's impact and general reception. This series includes data such as charts and summary results, but please note that some niacinamide study data is in other parts of the collection: forms recording individual patients' joint measurements are in the Patient Records series and are mostly restricted due to the presence of personally identifiable health information; a significant number of photos, slides, and negatives of Kaufman's patients who participated in the niacinamide studies are part of the Photographs and Negatives series and many of these visual materials are also restricted.

Niacinamide correspondence constitutes the largest group of material in the Niacinamide series and this correspondence is subdivided into three groups: professional correspondence and name files (exchanges with doctors and other health care providers, companies, government agencies, etc.); requests for niacinamide or arthritis advice or treatment testimonials from members of the public; and simple requests and delivery confirmations for Kaufman's articles and books on niacinamide. The professional correspondence includes exchanges between Kaufman and important medical figures such as Linus Pauling, Abram Hoffer, Jonathan Wright, Andrew Saul, and others. Researchers interested in Kaufman's niacinamide work may also want to consult the General Correspondence series as it contains a small amount of correspondence mentioning niacinamide.

The Niacinamide series documents Kaufman's niacinamide work in several other ways: through drafts, publications, notes, press notices on Kaufman's two monographs, material related to Kaufman winning the Tom D. Spies Award, as well as material related to Kaufman's role in a 1942-1943 study at the Bridgeport Brass Company, in which workers were given vitamin supplements and the effect on their overall health and mental state was assessed.

The Other Medical Topics series is composed of roughly 2 linear feet of material directly related to Kaufman's medical writings (those not about niacinamide). The writings cover a wide range of topics, from electrocardiography to psychosomatic eating problems and are intended for a wide range of audiences, from medical specialists to members of the public. Drafts, copies of Kaufman's publications, and notes make up the bulk of the series. There is also correspondence, published background material, drafts, and notes related to the Béla Schick Festschrift (1958) , which Kaufman edited, and about the Lowenfeld Mosaic Test (the test, which consists of a set of colored plastic shapes that the subject is supposed to arrange into a pleasing pattern, is part of the Realia series).

Other Writings consists of about 6 feet of mostly unpublished material directly related to Kaufman's writings that are neither medical nor niacinamide-related in subject. They are divided into four subseries: creative writing, money, autobiography, and miscellaneous.

The creative writing subseries consists of drafts, publications, and notes and fragments of Kaufman's short stories, poems, plays, and novels. This subseries also contains a small amount of correspondence and other material related to Kaufman's efforts to publish and publicize his creative writings.

Kaufman's interest in money led to the publication of a few articles, most notably "Some Emotional Uses of Money," primarily about what Kaufman termed "psycho-economic behavior." The money subseries contains drafts, publications, notes, source material for Kaufman's articles, and an unpublished book on money. The subseries also includes letters expressing readers' reactions to Kaufman's money pieces, as well as requests for advice.

Two draft versions and some notes and fragments of William Kaufman's autobiography, Snippets , make up the autobiography subseries. The miscellaneous subseries consists of drafts, notes, and publicity on writings of Kaufman's that don't fall into any of the above categories (i.e. are neither medical, nor creative pieces, nor money-related), for example, an opinion piece on writing obituaries .

The General Correspondence series (roughly 3 linear feet) is divided into two groups: personal correspondence between William and Charlotte Kaufman and general correspondence (correspondence that doesn't primarily concern niacinamide, the business of William's professional organizations, or William's employment) between William and others.

The correspondence between William and Charlotte Kaufman spans their relationship from their first meeting in Ann Arbor in 1936 until just before William's death in 2001. The early correspondence also includes a fair amount of attachments, including creative writings by both William and Charlotte, letters from others, and some sketches by William. The bulk of the letters date from 1938 and 1939, the years just before Charlotte and William were married. Their correspondence is arranged chronologically by, but not within, year.

The general correspondence subseries ranges in subject from personal to medical and includes correspondence with: Dave Brubeck, Luke Bucci, Rodrigo Carozo, William Crook, Thomas Dorman, Carlton Fredericks, John Fulton, Anna Freud, Bernard Halpern, David Harley, Fred Hodges, Paul Kallós, Heinz Karger, Sam Kaufman, John Leonard, Marshall Mandell, Theron Randolph, Samuel Schnee, Béla Schick, Nicholas Spinelli, Frank Wilson, and White House staff members during the Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower administrations.

The Professional Organizations series (approximately 1 linear foot) details Kaufman's involvement with various medical organizations, including as American Editor-in-Chief of the International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology , President of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and in various posts in the American College of Allergists and other organizations. The series consists primarily of correspondence and memos. It also contains programs, menus, schedules, some newspaper clippings, and meeting minutes.

The Personal series consists of about 3 feet of papers that relate to William Kaufman's personal affairs. The material falls in nine groups: biographical, education, employment, family, finances, health, homes, inventions and copyrights, and articles and press releases.

A broad swath of material documents Kaufman's basic personal information. Included are passports, a diary, and Who's Who entry material. William Kaufman's academic achievements are well represented and span from Pottsville High to University of Michigan Medical School to continuing education courses. His academic life is reflected in grades, notes, yearbooks, newspaper clippings related to scholarships and honors, fraternity materials, student identification cards, financial records, graduation programs, and alumni correspondence and reunion materials.

Periods of William Kaufman's employment in hospitals and New York pharmaceutical advertising agencies are documented in memos, drafts of industrial writings (interpretation of FDA regulations, drug labeling, promotion and education, etc.), announcements and press about Kaufman's professional appointments, and other business papers. The family material documents particular episodes in the lives of the Schnee and Kaufman families. These papers were originally grouped together and have been retained in this order. Besides these few groups, all correspondence with members of the Schnee and Kaufman families is part of the General Correspondence and Charlotte Kaufman series.

The remainder of the Personal series is composed of two smaller groups: information related to the selling, buying, rezoning, taxation, and insuring of the Kaufmans' homes; and certificates of copyright, letters patent, legal paperwork, correspondence, and design plans related to the construction of Kaufman's joint measuring instruments.

The Charlotte Kaufman series is 7 linear feet of Charlotte Kaufman's files. The bulk of the series arises from Charlotte Kaufman’s role as Executive Director of the Family Life Film Center of Connecticut (established February 22, 1967). The Family Life Film Center papers overlap with Charlotte’s involvement with other citizens’ groups championing causes such as better schools and better police-community relations. Charlotte’s original topical folder organization, where present, was retained and most folder labels are hers. All dates assigned to the folders are rough bulk dates and not necessarily comprehensive. There is a significant amount of material related to a grant given to the Family Life Film Center by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Social & Rehabilitation Service to conduct a pilot program designed to raise awareness of career options for handicapped individuals.

Also included in the Charlotte series are materials relating to Charlotte's other community activities (such as her involvement with the Alliance Française du Comte de Fairfield), correspondence between Charlotte and other individuals (not related to niacinamide--those letters have been included in the Niacinamide series), and personal materials, which include biographical material, papers relating to Charlotte's education, employment, family, and health. A highlight of the personal Charlotte material is a folder of material about her 1939 trip to Alaska and Charlotte's interest in Alaska becoming a place for resettlement of refugees from Hitler's Europe.

The Patient Records series (one linear foot) consists primarily of joint measurements of and case histories of patients, most likely collected as part of William Kaufman's niacinamide studies in the 1940s. A few patients have more extensive files that may include correspondence or additional charts. Due to the presence of personally identifiable health information, much of the material in this series is closed to researchers and consultation with Special Collections staff is required before accessing this series. Original binder and folder titles have been retained where present. This series contains a few photographs, but most patient photos have been transferred to the Photographs and Negatives series.

The Computer Disks consists mostly of 3.5 inch floppy disks that contain backups of emails and files the Kaufmans had on their home computer. The majority of the disks are indexed and organized in binders and their original order and housing has been retained. The series also includes 3 CDs.

The Artwork series is comprised of William Kaufman’s drawings, sketches, and paintings. This includes a series of mostly black-and-white drawings of imaginary creatures titled “Kaufman’s Kritters.” Documents complementing the artwork are also in this series and include Kaufman’s efforts get his artwork published and his entries into various shows and contests.

The relatively small Audiovisual series is comprised of cassette tapes, including a 1978 interview William Kaumfan did with Carlton Fredericks, and film in various formats including 16mm motion pictures reels, microfilm, and canisters of 36mm film. Among the films is a short film, A Day in the Life of P. T. Barnum, that Charlotte Kaufman produced.

The Slides series consists of a few thousand color slides, including a small number of glass-plate slides. The patient studies slides, which are mostly images of mouths, tongues, eyes, and, to a lesser extent, other body parts, make up the largest part of the series. It is very likely that these slides were produced as part of William Kaufman's niacinamide studies. The patient studies slides are divided into three groups: boxed, sleeved, and glass-plate. All three groups are organized alphabetically by patient name. Most of these patient slides are closed due to the presence of personally identifiable health information. Researchers interested in the slides should consult Special Collections staff. Additionally, there are a small number of personal and other slides.

The Photographs and Negatives series is divided into three subseries: Photographs, Negatives, and Photographs and Negatives (the Photographs and Negatives subseries, while redundant, is used because some photographs were bundled together with their original negatives and these were kept together). All three subseries contain a variety of sizes and formats. The Photographs subseries and the Negatives subseries both include a substantial number of patient images, mostly demonstrating the flexibility of a particular joint. While some of these photographs are restricted (please consult with Special Collections staff if interested), some do not contain personally identifiable information and are open for research. All three subseries contain personal images (which include portraits, images of homes and artwork, as well as travel and conference pictures). The Negatives subseries also encompasses color transparencies, many of which are images associated with the Lowenfeld Mosaic Test .

Finally, the Realia series contains three dimensional artifacts, mostly metal medical instruments that William Kaufman invented and used in his niacinamide studies. In particular, many of the objects are goniometers, or instruments for measuring flexibility. The Lowenfeld Mosaic Test , in its original green case, is also part of this series.

William A. Reuben Papers, ca. 1946-2000 (majority within 1946-1996)

William Reuben is an investigative reporter and author who wrote, most notably, about the Rosenberg espionage case and the Alger Hiss-Whitaker Chambers libel and perjury trials. The Collection includes correspondence, research and interview notes, drafts of books and articles, published and unpublished, on the trials of the "Trenton Six," Morton Sobell and Robert Soblen, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and Alger Hiss, with much research on Whittaker Chambers.

In general, most of the series consist of similar kinds of material: Reuben's research notes, drafts of his writings, correspondence, clippings, and reviews of other writings about the case or individual. Some of the series have further value because they include Reuben's collection of printed material about the case. For example, Reuben was particularly active in the Committee to Secure Justice in the Rosenberg Case, and the Rosenberg series includes some of the printed matter put out by this organization. Reuben also collected correspondence of the Civil Rights Congress, a major organization lobbying on behalf of the Trenton Six.

In many ways, the Reuben papers are an assemblage of secondary material. Reuben had little first-hand dealings with either the Rosenbergs or the Trenton Six. Nevertheless, the files have value for their documentation of the manner in which this one investigative reporter worked. Reuben was a meticulous and persistent researcher, who tracked down a variety of leads in a story, first analyzing the available court transcripts and other official records, then corresponding as much as he was able with the people involved in the case (including other writers like himself), and finally monitoring the amount and kind of press coverage given to the case. Unfortunately, Reuben did not gain as much first-hand contact with the principals in his investigations as he would have liked, and thus the collection is not as substantive as the researcher might like. Reuben 's correspondence, furthermore, is often superficial and anecdotal in character. Another disappointment of the collection are Reuben 's notes and drafts, which because they are fragmentary or unidentified, are difficult to use and of questionable research value.
