Abstract:
This collection is comprised of letters addressed to Ward Allan Howe (1900-1977), a New York Times travel writer, between the dates of 1936 and 1960. These letters have been saved for their noteworthy signatures. All of the letters are addressed to Howe except where noted. Acquired with 6,900 positive photographs, 4,289 color transparenices, and approximately 22,00 negatives. (The aforementioned visual material is housed separately as the Ward Allan Howe Photos.)

Background

Scope and Content:

This collection contains two series of materials (1. letters to W. A. Howe; 2. various documents related to W. A. Howe) that were created between 1922 and 1972. The first series includes letters from Lucius Morris Beebe, Arthur Brisbane, James C Hagerty, Alfred Mossman Landon, and Elwyn Brooks White. The second series includes an article, crendentials, resumes, membership cards,

Biographical / Historical:

Ward Allan Howe was a New York native, University of Michigan and Colombia University alumnus, and a travel writer for the New York Times. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan after serving in the Army in World War I, and received his master's degree in journalism from Colombia University after that. Howe had a keen love of travel, but via more specific means - namely, trains. Most of his travel for work was conducted by train; he did not fly in planes or drive cars. During his tenure at NYT, he specialized in landscape and outdoor photography, often taking photos to illustrate the articles he wrote. He retired from the NYT in 1956.

Acquisition Information:
This collection was part of a larger gift from the Ward Allan Howe Estate, 1977-78.
Arrangement:

This collection is arranged into two basic series.

Series 1 is letters from inviduals/persons. These are arranged alphabetically by sender and then chronilogically within each sender group. Series 2 is a variety of document types. These are grouped into three distinct categories: Article; Credentials, Documents, etc; and Miscelleanous. Within each category, the documents are arranged chronologically where applicable.
