The publications are organized into three series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Topical Publications.

The Unit Publications series includes annual reports, brochures and pamphlets, and bulletins describing course offerings from the Institute. This subseries also contains calendars and flyers describing the various programs, presentations, and events sponsored by the Institute for the Humanities. These are arranged chronologically and broken down by the Institute's annual themes. There are two newsletters Humanities and Notes, which cover the activities of the unit from 1989 to the present.

The Sub-Unit Publications series contains brochures from the Humanities Camp. The Humanities Camp is an event which brings together alumni and supporters with University of Michigan faculty to discuss and explore current issues and themes in the humanities.

The ISR Publications contains publications of the Institute for Social Research and several sub-units, especially the Survey Research Center. The publications include annual reports, histories, bibliographies, newsletters, brochures and research reports.

Contains annual reports, bibliographies, brochures, bulletins and course catalogs, manuals, newsletters, and reports from the Center for Political Studies, Center for Research on Utilization of Scientific Knowledge, CIEL Project: Computers in Early Literacy, Inter-university Consortium for Political Research, National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Survey Research Center, and the Population Studies Center.

The Publications series (6.5 linear feet, 477.9 KB) consists of three subseries: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Topical Publications.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Institute for Social Research, individuals connected with the history were interviewed. Excerpts of the videotaped interviews were used to produce "In the Public Interest: Fifty years of Social Research." Includes videotaped interviews with ISR personalities and typed transcripts of the interviews. For some interviews only a transcript is available. A copy of the final product excerpted from the interviews is included along with digital materials containing copies of the transcripts.

During 1997-1998, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of ISR, a series of filmed interviews were conducted by Erik Austin with individuals connected with the history of ISR. The interviews were excerpted and used to produce the videotape history In the Public Interest: Fifty Years of Social Research. Documentation from this project includes a copy of the final video, videotaped interviews with individuals associated with ISR, and typed transcripts of the interviews. The records are arranged as two series: Videotapes and Transcripts.

The Videotapes series (29 VHS tapes) includes a copy of In the Public Interest: Fifty Years of Social Research a copy made from a 1956 University of Michigan television program featuring Angus Campbell, and 27 videotapes of interviews from 1997-1998. The Transcripts series contains written transcriptions of the interviews, along with a digital convenience copy of the written text. The digital material contains the text of the interview transcripts in Microsoft Word, PDF and TXT formats. Researchers should note that there are some interviews for which only a transcript is available. As such, the transcript series is more comprehensive than the videotape series.

The Institute for Social Research (ISR), an interdisciplinary center for social science research, was created in 1949 when the Research Center for Group Dynamics (founded at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) joined the university's Survey Research Center. ISR houses the Center for Political Studies (CPS), Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), Population Studies Center (PSC), Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD), and the Survey Research Center (SRC). Records document the founding and development of ISR and its related centers and programs and include audiovisual materials, minutes, correspondence, topical files, reports, and proposals. Administrative records include governance committees and director's files. Records of the Program for Research on Black Americans (PRBA) consist of grant proposals, survey instruments, focus group transcriptions, correspondence, bulletins, and internal governance records created under the auspices of PRBA and its various projects. Records of the Research Center for Group Dynamics are primarily the papers of director Kurt Lewin, including manuscripts and talks. Survey Research Center records consist largely of proposal and project files, although they also include faculty oral histories. The records of the Population Studies Center consist of lectures from its founder, Dr. Ronald Freedman, while the Center for Political Studies contains one binder of material from the American National Election Survey conducted in 1980.

The Institute for Social Research (ISR) records are dated from 1936-2017 (scattered) and consist of 143.8 linear feet (in 146 boxes) and digital files (online). Materials in this record group include audiovisual material, committee files (which include minutes and agendas), correspondence, directors' files, oral histories, publications, reports, and topical files. These records document the founding and subsequent development of ISR as well as its centers and programs, particularly the Program for Research on Black Americans (PRBA) and the Survey Research Center (SRC). The records also provide an overview of ISR's administration and the evolution of social science survey research methodology.

There are gaps in the records, which can be addressed in part through the papers of Rensis Likert, Angus Campbell, Dorwin P. Cartwright, and Philip E. Converse—all of which are held at the Bentley Historical Library (BHL). When viewed in conjunction with other ISR-related personal papers in the Bentley Historical Library, a rich and detailed picture of the growth of ISR as a center and the social science research discipline emerges.

A 2001 research project conducted through the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) on the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare's (HEW) investigation of a complaint of gender discrimination at the University of Michigan in 1970. The complaint led to amendments to Title VII and to Title IX in 1972. Files include administrative files and audio cassettes of interviews.

The records of the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender's research project, "Women's Activism Against Sex Discrimination: The 1970 HEW Investigation of the University of Michigan" have been divided into two series: Project Files and Interview Audiocassettes.

The ITD Publications subgroup (5 linear feet) is divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

The Information Technology Division, formed in 1985, consolidated academic and administrative computing at the University of Michigan. Douglas Van Houweling was named head of the unit and at the same time appointed to the new position of Vice Provost for Information Technology. During the 1980s, the unit oversaw a shift away from Michigan Terminal System (MTS) mainframe computing to a distributed, networked environment. The Information Technology Division record group documents the development of networked computing at the University of Michigan as it evolved from 1979 to 1995, mainly during the tenure of Douglas Van Houweling. The records include historical data, internal and external committee material, correspondence, and topical files and visual material.

The records of the Information Technology Division measure 23.5 linear feet and date from 1976 to 1998; the bulk of the material represents the years 1985 to 1997. The records consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, electronic mail, newspaper clippings, and reports. They document the administration of ITD, the development of computing on campus, UM's role in the development and management of local, regional, and national computer networks, and ITD's participation, largely in the person of Douglas Van Houweling, in a number of computing organizations, most notably EDUCOM and CIESIN (Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network).

The University of Michigan Housing Public Affairs office disseminated information and served as a spokesman for issues related to student housing. The files were collected or created by Alan Levy who was the director of Housing Public Affairs starting in the 1990s. Levy also held previous positions within the Housing Division. Included are topical files on campus issues and student life policies as well as national and international events impacting the campus community.

These files from Housing Public Affairs, were collected and created by Alan Levy in his roles with the Housing Division, primarily as housing spokesman. Documentation includes files on topics such as alcohol use, capital improvements, crime and safety, diversity in housing, and student deaths. Additionally, the university's response to external events, such as the outbreaks of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), the September 11 Terrorist Attacks, the Virginia Tech Massacre, and Y2K are also documented. Files on rate changes in university housing during the 1970s, and information of the university's purchase and sale of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity house are also found in these records. The files are arranged into four series: Topical Files, University Housing Rate Changes, Nu Sigma Nu, and Audio-Visual Materials.

The University of Michigan Hospital system has evolved and expanded since its inception in 1869. The various hospitals, such as the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, provide medical treatment to the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. The Hospitals records contain five series: Hospital Administration, Nursing, Committees/Councils, Patient Files, and Hospital Buildings. The Homoeopathic Medical School Publications contains one series, Unit Publications. The series includes announcements from 1875 through 1922, two issues of Ann Arbor Alumnus: A Quarterly Journal, and the journal University Homeopathic Observer for 1907 through 1914. Also included are several reprints, reports and lectures from the school which mainly concern the defense of homeopathic medicine in the face of its numerous detractors.

The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (formerly the School of Public Policy) developed out of various institutes at the University of Michigan including the Institute of Social and Public Administration the Institute of Public Administration, and the Institute of Public Policy Studies. The School provides courses and conducts research in areas of public administration and public policy issues. Records include administrative files, correspondence, topical files and some material on research projects.

The University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy record group documents the history and development of public policy studies at the University of Michigan. The records contain some information on the beginning of instruction in public administration in 1915 and the formation of the Institute of Social and Public Administration in 1936. The bulk of the material documents the administration and subsequent reorganizations of the academic unit currently known as the School of Public Policy. Records include correspondence, minutes, historical materials and topical files concerning the Institute, its Lansing Office, its programs in the Republic of China and documented the Philippine Islands, and the Michigan Constitutional Convention of 1961- 1962. the records have been received in three major accessions, 1972 (boxed 1-9), 1997 (boxes 10-14) and 2006 (boxes 15-18).

Most of the materials comprising the 1972 accession cover the period from the 1950s to the mid-1980s. Unfortunately, few documents about the establishment and development of the public policy studies curriculum between 1915 and 1945 exist. Particular strengths of the record group are the materials on the Philippine Institute of Public Administration and the Taiwan Center for Public and Business Administration Education. The German Training Program files also offer insight into international interests of the public administration faculty at the University of Michigan. The German Training Program was a program established to provide Germans with a knowledge of American political and social institutions, democratic skills, and development of individual competence in fields of knowledge such as journalism, pedagogy, and public administration. Other series in the School of Public Policy records allow for a general overview of the structure of the School of Public Policy. They also demonstrate the composition and research interests of the faculty and students in the department.

The records comprising the 1997 accession from the School of Public Policy were primarily arranged chronologically. This arrangement has been retained and the record group has been broken down into a Chronological Files series, several Topical Files series, a Sound Recordings Series, and a Photographs series. It should be noted that some of the files in the Topical Files series include documents created after the dates noted in the series heading.

The 2006 accession consisted of additional administrative files and material relating to the dedication of the Joan and Sanford Weil Hall groundbreaking and dedication.

Administrative and clinical research records of the University of Michigan Hospital based General Clinical Research Center. The records are currently closed due to patient record restrictions.

The records of the General Clinical Research Center consist of both administrative files and records of clinical experiments. They include reports, correspondence, grant files, committee records and other administrative files and records research protocols and supporting documents for individual research projects.

Records, 1922-1965, of the Fraternity Office of the University of Michigan. Documents activities of the Interfraternity Council and the Interfraternity Alumni Assembly. Also contains folders for individual fraternities and sororities and includes histories, member lists, and information about disciplinary action taken against fraternities.

The records of the University of Michigan Fraternity Office cover the period 1922-1964. The provenance of the records is unclear. The records appear to have been created in the offices of the Dean of Men, Dean of Women, and the Interfraternity Council, in addition to the Fraternity Office. The records are divided into two series, Topical Files and Greek Organizations.

There are also materials relating to Theta Nu Epsilon, an underground fraternity that generated concern among college administrators across the nation and a 1960 hazing incident involving Theta Xi fraternity. Also of interest are the files on Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, two sororities formed for African American women.

The documentation of this office is in general scant; the bulk of the documentation covers the years 1958-1964.

Records generated by administrators and offices charged with the financial activities of the University, including Secretary and Vice-President Shirley W. Smith and Controller and Assistant Secretary John C. Christensen; include general University financial records; records of land; trust fund records; proposed development and construction projects; operating records of buildings, divisions and other units.

The records of Financial Operations date from 1837 to 1982, primarily after 1910. The 27 linear feet of manuscript material, 52 oversized volumes and one reel of microfilm reflect not only the financial records normally associated with an accounting office, but also the broad range of subjects which became a concern under the leadership of Shirley Smith. What would eventually become Financial Operations may have served as a records storage office for many of the other units under Smith's control. In any event, Financial Operations became the guardian of a wide variety of records, documenting the University in a number of ways not normally expected of an accounting service.

Of particular note, the collection contains a variety of different record formats. Bound materials, in the form of books, are included in the boxes and when numbering more than one, are listed in the finding aid as multiple volumes. The collection also contains oversized volumes, in the form of large accounting books. These oversized volumes are numbered and stored separately. They are listed in the finding aid where intellectually appropriate, and designated by volume number. Enclosed in this finding aid is an index of the oversized volumes, organized by number, and their contents.

The records of the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASSCO) document the approach taken by the university to assist employees troubled by medical, financial, family or work-related problems. The records span the years 1973-1996, with the bulk of the materials covering 1980-1993. Documentation details the evolution and development of FASAP and its involvement in larger substance abuse issues across campus. University of Michigan unit established in 1911 to advance culture in the state, assist local communities with technical knowledge, and acquaint faculty with local conditions through course offerings and lectures by university faculty and staff at sites around the state. Measuring 227 linear feet, 1 oversize folder, 51 oversize volumes, and 283 GB (online), the records of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer document the fiscal history of the university beginning from 1909. At least since the 1950s, the vice president has taken responsibility for the creation of university policy in areas requiring special fiscal knowledge as well as for the preparation of the university's general fund and trust budgets. Other activities, such as policing actual expenditures or the day to day operations of specific service units within the university reporting to the vice president, have been delegated to subordinate offices.

Reflecting this division of responsibility, the records of the vice president document major fiscal issues facing the university and the preparation of the university's annual budgets. Some of the records are office files. However, the office also retained many key bound financial documents including an official set of the university's annual budgets.

The records are organized into six series: Central Topical Files; Supplemental Files; Assistant to the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Associate Vice President for Finance; University Budgets, Accounts and Reports; and Photographs. Most series are further divided into several subseries, reflecting different accessions. There is considerable overlap in date span of the topical files of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Files created by one Vice President were sometimes retained for use by his successor(s) and transferred at a much later date than the bulk of his records.

The Division of Evaluation and Examinations was a testing and research unit which oversaw the testing and evaluation of incoming and current University of Michigan students and was tasked with administering several national testing programs to communities throughout the state. The Division was created by the Regents in 1945 as an incorporation of the Bureau of University Research (1927) and the Psychological Clinic (1938). Records include tests and evaluations, data tables, project reports and publications, testing manuals, and correspondence related to the implementation and evaluation of student testing from 1927 to 1971.

The records of the Evaluation and Examinations Division (EED) span from 1927 to 1971 and include student testing data and statistical summaries, project reports and statistical summaries, correspondence, memoranda, publications, bulletins, agendas, manuals and guidelines related to testing, scoring and evaluating various tests the EED administered. These tests include the ACE College Aptitude Test, the Cooperative Reading Comprehension Test, the Michigan English Proficiency Test, the College Qualification Test, the Michigan Math Placement Test, the Cooperative Chemistry Test, and the Differential Aptitude Test for entering freshmen. The Division was responsible for administering and scoring tests for high schools throughout the state as well as incoming University students, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Also contains materials related to the Opinion, Attitude and Interest Survey (OAIS), which was developed and administered by the EED.

The individual series are arranged by year except for Project Files, which is generally arranged by project title or year labels, as these were collected from multiple filing cabinets and the original folder order has been lost. In all series except Student Test Data, testing data which contained student names and scores or grades or other secure information has been removed and destroyed.

The Employment Transition Program (ETP) was an applied and experimental program focusing on employment relationships, particularly in the automobile industry. ETP was one of the initial grant-funded studies and came to serve as an umbrella title for several subsequent grants including studies involving the United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Company. ETP was established by Jeanne P. Gordus. ETP records include grant proposals (funded and non-funded), training manuals, publications, and project development files relating to studies on unemployment and intervention training programs for displaced auto workers, including life education planning programs and life education advisors.

A community history project intended to record memories and information about East Quad, the traditional home of Residential College, before the structure underwent significant renovations in the summer of 2012. The collection includes video footage and email correspondence of current and former residents, administrators, faculty, and staff sharing stories about life in East Quad as well as a documentary video, images of murals, and a cookbook from the Halfway Inn café.

The East Quad Memory Project records preserves the memories of East Quad as shared by current and former Residential College students, staff and administrators. The collection provides documents the impact of the College's unique environment on students and will furthermore be of use to those interested in the social life and customs of University of Michigan students. The Drama Season of the University of Michigan is a theater group on campus. Prior to 1952 known as the Ann Arbor Drama Season; the organization did not function from 1943 to 1948. The records collect scrapbooks, 1938-1942 and 1949-1961, containing clippings, programs, and production photographs; also correspondence files, legal and financial papers relating to operation of this Ann Arbor, Michigan, professional theater program, during the directorships of Robert Henderson, John O'Shaughnessy, and Valentine Windt.

The Drama Season records span the years 1929-1966. The material consists of scrapbooks from 1938 to 1942 and 1949 to 1961 (2 linear ft.) which contain mainly clippings from local and national newspapers, along with some programs and photographs.

Also included are alphabetically arranged administrative files relating to the operation of the theater and the performances. Materials include correspondence, legal and financial files and press releases. The bulk of this material is from the 1950s and 1960s.

The photographs series includes a photo album and production photographs, mostly from the 1950s and autographed photos of Lillian Gish and Billie Burke.

Originally founded in 1970 as the Safety Department, the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is the university's public safety and law enforcement unit. The collection consists of digital Clery Act reports from 2006-2020 (with gaps).

This collection contains digital copies of the University of Michigan's Campus Safety Handbook, Annual Security Report and Annual Fire Safety Report, and Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. These documents—also known as Clery Act reports—were published between 2006-2020 (with gaps). They include crime statistics in the previous three years, safety tips, and information about various health and safety agencies, laws, policies, programs, regulations, resources, and services. Beginning in 2010, these reports also included fire safety information and statistics.

Task Force created by President Mary Sue Coleman in 2006 to help frame the University of Michigan's response to Proposal 2, a state ballot initiative that banned the use of affirmative action and preferential treatment in hiring and admissions decisions. Includes administrative records of the Task Force and its subcommittees in digital format as well as related online resources created by the university. Prominent records include the final report of the Task Force, interim reports of subcommittees, email correspondence, and archived Websites that promoted Task Force findings and diversity in general at the university.

The Diversity Blueprints Task Force records will be of value to researchers interested in the University of Michigan's efforts to maintain and enhance the diversity of its campus in response to the limits imposed by the 2006 Michigan ballot initiative, Proposal 2, on the use of affirmative action for admissions decisions. Organizational records; minutes of the board of directors, and of the steering committee; and subject files detailing fund raising activities and campus fraternities (resulting from association of staff member with Sigma Phi).

The Development Council records date from 1951 to 1985 and measure 3.5 linear feet. They are arranged in a two series: Board of Directors and an Alphabetical File. The records are most notable for organizational documents from the early 1950s and mid- to late-1960s, long runs of minutes from the board of directors (1953-1985) and steering committee (1968-1980), and correspondence from the development office (1951-1963). Surprisingly, there is a small but interesting body of records regarding fraternities and sororities, particularly Sigma Phi. This is located in the correspondence and results from the association of one of the Development Office staff with Sigma Phi.

The Detroit Observatory, an astronomical observatory on the campus of the University of Michigan, was the vision of University of Michigan President Henry Philip Tappan. He recognized the need for institutions of higher education to pursue scientific endeavors. Built in 1854, the Detroit Observatory was named after the Detroit residents who helped finance the building project. Extensive restoration work of the Observatory was completed in 1999.

The Detroit Observatory record group includes administrative materials of the Observatory's later years (post-1994), including documentation on the Observatory's restoration project and materials encompassing the Observatory's publicity and outreach efforts. The collection also contains various historical documents and artifacts such as logbooks and records, photographs and other visual materials, motion pictures, architectural drawings, and publications. The collection includes all of the documents, artifacts, and records transferred to the Bentley Historical Library in 2005. Materials not physically transferred to the Bentley that remain in the Observatory (such as telescopes, clocks, and associated astronomical devices) have not been identified here, but documentation can be found listed in the various inventories and databases found in the administrative series.

The Detroit Area Study (DAS), conducted from 1951 to 2004, was a graduate training program in survey methods at the University of Michigan. Students conducted an annual survey in the Detroit Metropolitan Area (Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties), with a different research focus each year. Common topics included community life in an urban environment, family, politics, and race relations. The records consist of proposals, questionnaires, and analyses of the surveys.

The Detroit Area Study (DAS) records document a decades long survey research project focused on the Detroit metropolitan area. The records include administrative files documenting the development, funding and management of the project, publicity materials, photographs, publications produced by DAS staff or by others using DAS generated data, questionnaires and sampling reports the records are organized into four series: Administrative Files, Proposals, Questionnaires, and Sampling Reports.

University of Michigan department which manages recreational sports and fitness program for students faculty and staff and oversees intramural competition; includes administrative records, competition results, news clipping scrapbooks and photographs.

Dept. of Postgraduate Medicine established at the University of Michigan in 1927 as part of a state wide effort to provide continuing medical education to practicing physicians. In 1946 the Affiliated Hospital program began, providing decentralized medical training for interns, residents, and community practitioners. Documents the development and administration of the affiliated hospital program, and material on key affiliations including Henry Ford Hospital, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Wayne County General Hospital, as well as hospitals throughout the state. Records documenting the early use of medical television are present as are records of the Medical Center House Officers Committee, and speeches by James D. Bruce.

The records of the University of Michigan Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education, dating from 1919 to 1993, offer a partial picture of the development of the department and the subsequent effort to provide continuing medical education to practicing physicians and residents. These records generally contain little information about intramural programming, primarily focusing on the affiliated hospital program and the training of interns and residents (house officers). The records are also indicative of the varied responsibilities held by the department over time (i.e., administration of Medical Center Alumni Society).

The records were received in two separate accessions. The first accession, received from the Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education in 1994 is located in boxes 1-10. Material received in 1996 are located in boxes 12-15. Restricted files from both accessions have been removed to box 11.

Efforts to locate a superconducting super collider in Michigan in the 1980s are well documented in these records.

The records are most informative in the administrative proceedings of the department. They are least informative in curricular and research areas. Although there are 19th century records present, the bulk of the records cover the period from 1954 to 1991.

Established in 1956, the Department of Human Genetics traces its origins to the Laboratory of the Vertebrate Biology, created in 1941, and reorganized in 1950 as the Institute of Human Biology. Following the retirement of Lee Raymond Dice, the Institute was reconfigured as a department under the direction of James V. Neel. Records consist of the correspondence and administrative files of Lee Raymond Dice and James V. Neel relating to the development of genetic research and study at Michigan. Also included are articles and reprints by Dice, Neel, and other faculty associated with genetic and heredity research at Michigan. Three photographs are also included.

The records of the Department of Human Genetics consist of 4.75 linear feet spanning the period from 1937 to 1977 and include material from the predecessor unit, Institute of Human Biology (1941-1956). Records from the University of Michigan Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures were received in three accessions from the department in 2005, 2006, and 2008. The material is described as one collection and is primarily comprised of records related to departmental administrative functions, events and publications, curriculum, and faculty. Files document departmental meetings, graduate and undergraduate curriculum, rotational reviews, staffing plans, personnel information, and faculty.

Virtually all of the records relate directly to the department's work in theater education. Included are extensive records of university theatrical productions (1938-1972); records of the University Players, a student organization dedicated to presenting live theater on campus; and general information regarding theater in Ann Arbor. Actual department records make up a small minority of the documentation found within the collection, although some information regarding a 1972 unit review and the decisions leading to the 1979 reorganization of the department are included. Photographs include images of plays and actors in various University theatrical productions.

The records of the Philosophy Department of the University of Michigan measure 2.5 linear feet and 3 oversize folders, and date from 1907 to 1987 with many of the records dating from 1947 to 1961, coinciding with William Frankena's tenure as department chair. The record group has been arranged alphabetically by topic or type of material. Photographs of Department of Philosophy graduate students and faculty dating from 1907 to 1932 are available both within the collection and in an oversized folder.

The Correspondence files include information regarding personnel searches, scheduling, and various departmental business. Also included are letters between William Frankena and various acting department chairs who were serving during his sabbatical years. The Course Materials files consist of a sampling of exams and syllabi for several of the department's courses during the years 1947 to 1961 and 1984. Although this material is by no means inclusive of the department's offerings or representative of how the courses were taught over the years, it does provide some insight as to the department's expectations of the students.

The Student Placement files demonstrate the lengths to which the department as a whole went to secure positions for their graduating doctoral students. Correspondence regarding the special circumstances of several students are foldered separately and further show the support one could expect as a graduate of this department. An additional point of interest is the file of Michael Davis which illustrates the department's attitude towards censorship and the governing bodies of higher educational institutions.

The remaining files contain department minutes, personnel information, financial information, statistics, records related to the University of Michigan Tanner Philosophy Library and various other bits of information that could help the researcher construct a picture of the department as it evolved during the 1950's to early 1980s time period.

The manuscript material covers the periods 1922 to 1941 and 1993 to 2007 while the visual materials are mainly from the time period 1985-2000. The earlier accessions include a series of faculty minutes covering the period from 1922 to 1941 and 1993 to 1999. The earlier accessions also include a small group of electronic mail correspondence (printout) that was sent from the central departmental office to the departmental faculty from 1993 to 1996. Subsequent accessions include a small selection of office files alphabetically arranged and additional faculty minutes.

Visual materials, documenting departmental activities ca. 1985-2000, form the bulk of the record group. The departmental website, as of June 2001, also forms a part of this record group. The visual materials in the record group include color and black and white photographs, contact sheets, slides, and negatives. The visual materials are either arranged by a numerical sequence or alphabetically by topic or last name. Materials in the numerical sequence filing system include 4 x 6 prints, contact sheets, and negatives. While the materials in the numerical sequence are categorized by format, the materials in this sequence were designed to form one system. That is the 4 x 6 prints, contact sheets, and negatives reference each other.

Records include minutes of meetings of senior staff members; also other materials concerning intern and residency training, and scattered correspondence and lecture notes; includes chairperson's files of John M. Carethers, John Del Valle, H. David Humes, William N. Kelley, Marc Lippman, Lawrence McMahon, and Tadataka Yamada. Also included are divisional files, administrative records, and photographs (including negatives and proofs) of faculty and staff.

The records of the department have arrived in five separate accessions in 1986, 1992, 1998, 2014, and 2018.

The 1992 accession of the records of the Department of Internal Medicine are primarily from the years when William Kelley served as chair (1975-1989). The accession is divided into five series: Division Files, Topical Files, Meeting Minutes, Chairperson's Files, and Pollard Medical Research Institute.

The 1998 accession contains the files of Chris Durovich, the Chief Administrator of the Department of Internal Medicine and covers the period from 1990 to 1996. As one would expect given this origin, these materials are focused more on the administration of the department than on its medical mission. The many topical files relating to managed care and organizational restructuring (such as the Cost Effectiveness Program (CEP), Redesign Coordinating Group, and Structure Work Group) reveal the many pressures on the department during this period. Durovich was also active in many inter and intradepartmental committees and workgroups, including the Clinical Departmental Administrators and meetings. This accession is divided into two series: Topical Files and Financial Files.

The 2014 accession is divided into five series: Division Files, Chairperson's Files, Financial Files, Topical Files, and Photographs. Material includes correspondence of former key figures, including department chairs Drs. William N. Kelley (1975-1989), Tadataka Yamada (1990-1996), H. David Humes (1996-2000), and John M. Carethers (2009-present), Medical School Dean Giles G. Bole Jr. (1990-1996), and George D. Zuidema (professor of surgery and Vice Provost Emeritus for Medical Affairs/1984-1994). Other materials highlight the department's efforts to attract and honor outstanding faculty and staff, monitor on-going operations, identify issues, gather and evaluate information, and recommend courses of action.
