Records concern legal aspects of university policy, university labor relations, court case of the University of Michigan and the Michigan State Labor Mediation Board, and student disturbances and disciplinary actions taken against students.

These records document university policies regarding student conduct and discipline and the university's relationship with labor unions. Additionally, the materials document the involvement of university attorneys in the decision-making process. Frequent correspondents of Mr. Lemmer's included Vice President Wilbur K. Pierpont and President Robben W. Fleming.

The records measure 1.5 linear feet and are divided into four series: University Policy, Labor Relations, Regents V. Labor Mediation Board, and Student Unrest.

Office of Student Conflict Resolution (University of Michigan) records, 1962-2006

University of Michigan unit responsible for administering the Code of Student Conduct, regulating non-academic rights and responsibilities of students; unit also adjudicates violations and trains individuals for service on arbitration panels. Records relating to the creation of standards for student behavior, including background on earlier codes for student conduct and statement of student rights and responsibilities. Includes policy documents, reports, surveys, and review material as well as evaluations and reactions to the code.

The Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) records include materials related to the creation of standards for student behavior at the University of Michigan. These records include minutes from groups assigned to create standards of conduct; drafts and final policies implemented by the university; correspondence between campus administrators, legal counsel, and students and staff; formal evaluative reports on policies and their effectiveness; and original forms from students and staff telling administrators of their opinions on various issues related to standards of conduct.

A second accession was received from the Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) in August of 2008 and added 5.0 linear feet to the record group. The scope of the new records consists mostly of printed and produced materials including guidelines, worksheets, newspaper clippings, training materials, and reviews. The material also touches on the Code of Student Conduct including reviews, completed student and faculty surveys, and newspaper clippings of articles about the Code.

The OSCR records (7.0 linear feet) date from 1962 to 2006 and are organized into eleven series: Background Material; University Code for Non-Academic Conduct and University Judicial System; Policy on Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment; Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities (SSRR); Code of Student Conduct; Guidelines, Worksheets, and Forms; Training Manuals; Pubic Relations; Reviews and Reports; Surveys; and Publications.

Records, 1961-1971, of the Office of Student Community Relations of the University of Michigan, organization within the Office of Student Affairs; contain files largely relating to university regulations respecting student use of automobiles and bicycles, student housing, and other student concerns. Also contains earlier material inherited from other university offices.

The records include regulations regarding student automobiles and resulting parking and traffic problems (1922-1968), planning and regulation of bicycles and motorcycles, housing inspection, and other matters of student concern. The minutes of the University Council, composed of faculty members and students, containing emergency guidelines developed in 1970/1971 for dealing with campus unrest are included, as are a student credit union survey (1969), a health service study (1968-1969), and studies of university bookstores and campus recreation.

These publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications. The bulk of the publications document the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Center for Human Growth and Development, the Detroit Observatory, and the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Center (UMSAC) which became the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Research Center (UMSARC). Other sub-units under the jurisdiction of the Office of Vice President for Research include the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project, University of Michigan Division of Research Development and Administration, University of Michigan Institute of Gerontology, and University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. Officially established in 1959, the Office of Research supports and administers large interdisciplinary projects called research centers and administers research institutes. The record group includes individual vice president's files, central office files, staff files, financial records, administrative files, committee and task force documents and reports, special event files, and project and institute files.

The records of the vice-president for research date from 1911 to 2013 and measure 323.5 linear feet, 1 oversize box and 157 MB of digital materials. The records document the activities of the office overseeing grant funded research at the University of Michigan and offer some insight into the range of research undertaken at the university. Records include administrative files of vice-presidents, including correspondence, memoranda, and budgetary material relating to research projects and grants of university units and departments; and photographs.

The organization of the records, particularly the early accessions, reflects the tenure of the successive vice presidents for research. Later accessions included files of associate vice-presidents and senior staff officers as well topically organized files that spanned the tenure of several vice presidents. University of Michigan office responsible for programs to help students adjust to college life. Records include reports from various university offices and organizations with responsibility for orientation; correspondence and pamphlet material; and printed works directed toward incoming students and their families.

The Office of Orientation records document, somewhat unevenly, the efforts of the administration of the University of Michigan to ease the transition from high school student to university undergraduate. These records consist of correspondence and published materials sent to incoming students and reports of the various offices involved in orientation. The strength of this record group derives from the face presented by the university in these first documents given to its students. It is illuminating to note what advice the university deems essential for new students, but the tone of presentation is more telling.

The Office of Orientation records span the years 1925-1990, but primarily cover the years 1928-1946. The records came to the library in good order and are organized into three groups: Administration, Orientation Period, and Printed Materials.

Researchers interested in visual images of the orientation process should consult the University of Michigan News and Information Services collection for negatives on freshman week in 1930 and orientation in the 1950s and 1960s.

The rest of the material was acquired in a separate accession in 2007.

The Office of Financial Aid at the University of Michigan administers need- and merit-based financial support programs for students. The records include topical files detailing the operations of the office, its interactions with other university units and groups, and outside activities, as well as federal funding reports and applications and information on alumni scholarships.

The University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid record group consists of five series: Office of Financial Aid, University of Michigan, Outside Activities, Federal Funding Reports and Applications and Alumni Scholarships. Several accessions were brought together at the time of processing. The files include material mainly from three directors of the office, Tom Butts, Harvey Grotrian, and Judith Harper, as well as from several subordinate departments and staff. A small amount of older material from a predecessor office, the Office of Scholarships (which reported to the Dean of Men), is also included.

University of Michigan office established in 1973 to counsel students in matters of faith and morality, successor to several organizations concerned with student religious activity. Records are mainly of predecessor organizations, the Student Christian Association (1860-1937) and the Student Religious Association (1937- 1956), but does include some records of the Office of Religious Affairs (1956- 1973) and of successor organization, the Office of Ethics and Religion (1973- 1991); also records of component and related organizations, including the University of Michigan chapters of the Young Men's Christian Association and the Young Women's Christian Association and the Association of Religious Counselors.

Although the name given to this group of records is the University of Michigan Office of Ethics and Religion, the researcher should note that the records consist primarily of predecessor organizations, the Student Christian Association (SCA), the Student Religious Association (SRA), and the Office of Religious Affairs, as well as component and ancillary organizations such as the University of Michigan Young Men's Christian Association, the Young Women's Christian Association, the Association of Religious Counselors, and the Christian Federation Advisors.

The record group begins with a summary history of the organization written by C. Grey Austin and entitled A Century of Religion at the University of Michigan (1957). Covering the period up to the establishment of the Office of Religious Affairs, this history provides solid information about the role of religion at the university and the activities and restructuring of the SCA and the SRA. Written by the same individual who wrote the sections on the two organizations in The University of Michigan; An Encyclopedic Survey, this volume is more detailed than those summaries and should be consulted first for background information.

Founded in Fall 2016, the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (ODEI) is a University of Michigan unit that oversees and evaluates the implementation of the university's five-year strategic plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion. ODEI is led by the Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer and houses several other offices and programs, including the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), Wolverine Pathways, and the Center for Educational Outreach. The collection consists of annual progress reports.

Office of Budgets and Planning (University of Michigan) records, 1970-1979

Administrative unit formed by President Robben Fleming to service the needs of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Budget Priorities Committee, and the Program Evaluation Committee. Minutes of meetings, budget material, and supporting papers.

The minutes and reports for each of the four committees are filed in the collection. The Long Range Planning Committee was the most prolific of the four and the records of the full committee as well as its many subcommittees make up the bulk of the collection. One of its subcommittees, School and College Planning, maintained extensive records of their meetings and subsequent communications with the various schools within the university, such as Architecture and Design, Dentistry and Music, regarding the projected needs of those schools. The Budget Priorities Committee records contain a great deal of information regarding the budget, including requests for program revisions and proposals for capital projects.

The papers are arranged by committee. In addition to folder level description, the first folder of the collection contains an item by item listing of documents within the various folders. Some items, particularly from folders containing supporting material, were removed and either transferred to the Bentley Library's Printed Collection or returned to the Office of Academic Planning and Analysis. All items removed have been noted on the document list.

There are also four folders of collected materials relating to the Black Action Movement from 1970.

Unit of the Office of Budget and Planning, established in 1974 for purpose of conducting research on academic administration at University of Michigan and coordinating evaluation and planning activities of the VPAA and units under its jurisdiction. Successor of the Office of Institutional Research, Office of Academic Analysis and Planning. Primarily records of the Evaluation and Planning Project, 1974-1979, a study of all academic and academically related units under the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Includes correspondence, grant reports, evaluations of academic units, and planning documents. Also miscellaneous college and school accreditation reports.

The records of the Office of Budget and Planning document the activities of the office from 1970 to 1982. This period includes the transition of the office from the Office of Institutional Research to the Office of Academic Planning and Analysis (renamed Office of Budget and Planning in 1997) and the concurrent shift of core office activities from data collection to planning and analysis. One such analysis and planning activity that is well documented in the records is the Evaluation and Planning Project, 1974-1982. These records both document the planning process as well as provide a unique portrait of the academic units which reported to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. There is also material relating to formal unit reviews and self-studies, 1978-1982, that were not formally part of the Evaluation and Planning Project. In addition to the records from the 1970-1982 period, the record group includes a complete sequence of the Standard Survey Response Document (SSRD) starting in 1991. The records of the Office of Budget and Planning are organized into four series: Administrative Files, Unit Reviews, Correspondence, and Standard Survey Response Document.

The University of Michigan's Office of Academic Human Resources (AHR) provides human resource services for various university faculty and graduate student employees. Its staff are responsible for union contract issues and processes for academic employees as well as managing the tenure and promotion process for the Provost's office. The collection consists of hard copy and digital promotion casebooks for University of Michigan faculty and research staff at the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses. Also included are promotion guidelines and checklists.

The Office of Academic Human Resources Promotion Casebooks record group primarily consists of files on various tenure-track faculty members recommended by the leaders of colleges, schools, divisions, and institutes to the Board of Regents for promotion and/or tenure. Each individual's file typically includes the notification of the Regents' decision in the case, the promotion recommendation from the dean (or appropriate unit leader), a curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, and related documentation. The records are arranged chronologically by academic year and then alphabetically by academic unit. Larger schools and colleges associated with the University of Michigan Ann Arbor's campus, such as the College of Engineering; College of Literature, Science and the Arts; and the Medical School, are often further subdivided by department or division. Files for the UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint campuses are usually located at the end of each year and are also subdivided as appropriate. Particularly for the later years, as the files become more voluminous, additional documentation may be present, such as examples of research or teaching evaluations. In some cases, there is some blurring of the academic year or a promotion file was held back. For those reasons, those seeking a particular file may be compelled to look in one or more years—and particularly consult the appropriate out of season casebooks—to locate the sought-after file. In addition to these casebooks, the record group also includes promotion and tenure guidelines and checklists for particular academic years.

The Faculty and Staff files contain biographical and background information created and collected by the University of Michigan News and Information Services. News and Information Services is the media relations office of the university. The files represent more than 6,000 individual faculty and staff members. Some files contain photographs.

The Faculty and Staff Files (145 linear feet; 1944-2005) are arranged alphabetically by surname and contain academic and biographical information on nearly 6000 faculty and staff, including many who are inactive, retired or deceased. The files were maintained by the University of Michigan News and Information Service. Early on the files were working files holding ready reference biographical information and copies of press releases. Eventually the files came to include collected information such as copies of local and national newspaper articles where faculty or staff members were mentioned.

The amount of information per individual varies considerably, ranging from a single item to multiple folders. Files dating from around 1960-1995 tend to have more documentation than dates outside of this range, though there are some exceptions. Specific types of information include copies of news releases where the individual is mentioned, pages from Regents' meetings detailing appointments (resignations, faculty appointments, promotions, reassignments, sabbaticals, adoption of memoirs for retirements and deaths, etc.), newspaper clippings, magazine articles, preprints or reprints of publications, curricula vitae or other biographical summaries, and obituaries. In addition, some of the files contain photographs and negatives. (Photograph Series D of the News and Information Services records contains more than 4,000 faculty and staff portraits. A separate finding aid is available for that series.)

Files of University of Michigan presidents such as Alexander Ruthven and Harlan Hatcher are within the collection, as are files of various members of the Board of Regents. Distinguished alumni of the University of Michigan, including Nobel Prize winners Stanley Cohen and Raoul Wallenberg, also have files. The collection is of interest to researchers who desire a greater understanding of the professional interests and activities of faculty members in particular.

The University of Michigan News and Information Services functions as the university's media relations office. It disseminates information and images about university programs, research, events, and faculty and staff activities. This series of News and Information Services photographs is comprised of portraits of more than ca. 7,000 individual faculty and staff members spanning the years 1946-2006 (bulk 1950-1990).

This series of faculty and staff portraits, commonly known as "Series D", is part of the News and Information Services photographs collection, which consists of several other series often based on format such as the size of the negatives (4x5 or 35mm) or content (general campus photography or aerial photographs). Series D consists of black and white 4x5 inch negatives and 1-1/4 x 2-1/4 inch prints and negatives of faculty and staff (and some student) portraits alphabetically arranged.

The negatives were received in several accessions prior to 2007 totaling 7.5.f linear feet (15 boxes). These accessions were physically interfiled into a single alphabetic run. In 2016 a final accession 5.5 linear feet (15 boxes) of analog negatives were received. These have not been physically interfiled so the collection now consists of two alphabetic runs. However, in the container listing of this finding aid the files are presented in a single alphabet. Based on information supplied on the original negative envelopes, the listing includes faculty/staff name, department or unit (when provided) and date(s) of the portrait. Bentley Library negative numbers are included (if applicable)

The latest accession marks the end of the News and Information Services analog photography. The faculty and staff portrait series is continued in the Bentley Library's Michigan Photography digital photo collection.

Ten series of negatives, slides and copy prints documenting all aspects of University of Michigan life and activities, includes prints used in the University Record.

The News and Information Services Photographs document many aspects of university and community life, particularly activities of the administration, faculty, departments, and students beginning in 1946 and continuing into the early 1980s. Photographs were, for the most part, made by the staff of the News Service (later Information Services and now News and Information Services) for use with university press releases, or upon request of individuals with the university, or for outside media with special interests in university personnel or activities.

The record group presently consists of 10 series (A-J).

The series are comprised primarily of black and white negatives and contact sheets, although Series E includes six linear feet and one oversize box of prints, most of which are 8" x 10" black and white images, and Series H includes color transparencies. There are also prints in Series I, Series J, slides in Series E and I, and a 16 mm film in Series I. Color negatives become more frequent in the late 1980s.

The original order and file headings created by News and Information Services have been retained wherever possible. Thus, the several lettered series reflect various organizational schemes used in the past.

The News and Information holdings document how the university is portrayed in the media and the efforts of the university to promote itself. Although there is some correspondence from 1900-1903 and the 1930s, the bulk of the records date from 1946 to the present. The value of the files is as a source of ready information (on a yearly basis) about the activities and research accomplishments of university faculty and staff, departments, colleges and schools, libraries, centers, and other units. The records also chronicle notable events and visits by famous scholars and celebrities through yearly topical files, press releases, and correspondence. News and Information Service holdings also contain extensive photographic material (prints, negatives, slides, and transparencies) generated by the photography unit in addition to non-photographic records. The substantial photographic holdings are described in a separate finding aid.

The non-photographic News and Information Services records include some correspondence of the unit's administrators, although the bulk consists of news clippings, published materials, press releases, and other background information collected by NIS and arranged topically by year. The Neuroscience Program collection consists of one linear foot of material, arranged by topic. The 31 folders in the collection are open for general research.

The first two folders, Neuroscience Degree Program Planning, 1963-1982, contain information about the curriculum and its inception. Early correspondence regarding the need for a Neuroscience Program at the University of Michigan is included.

Ten of the 31 folders in the collection contain Neuroscience 690-691 materials. These are arranged by year, 1966-1976, and contain lecture schedules, seminar information, copies of the midterm and final examinations, and class evaluations. Materials pertaining to Neuroscience 731, Neurology 621 622, and Biological Science classes are arranged in individual folders as well. Information regarding other classes in the Neuroscience Program is arranged under Miscellaneous Course Announcement, and interdepartmental Memos and Miscellaneous Correspondence. The Preliminary Examination folders contain, in addition to copies of the exams themselves, correspondence among faculty members regarding proposals for questions and exam times.

The final two folders contain the Summary Reports of Rackham Administrative Council Meetings from 1975 1964.

Native American Studies Program (University of Michigan) records, 1972-2003

The Native American studies began at the University of Michigan in 1972. In 1983 it was formalized as a program within the Program in American Culture. Records include material relating to the establishment and growth of the Native American Studies Program. Collection contains records relating to the Committee on Native American Studies, focusing particularly on the early planning and implementation of the Native American Studies Program and course information, documentation of campus cultural activities, and issues of the Native American Advocate.

The records largely document the inception and early years of the University of Michigan's Native American Studies Program, beginning in 1972, as well as cultural and financial material from more recent years. The collection is arranged in a single series, Topical Files.

Two folders contain extensive information regarding the Ojibwa language courses, which have been offered regularly since 1973. The majority of documents relate to the growth of the program, specifically the expansion of Native American course offerings, the hiring of Native American faculty members, the dialogue between Native American students and the University over demands for a cultural center, and increased support services on campus for Native American Students.

The collection also consists of various budget and financial documents, as well as grant proposals. Several issues of a student publication, the Native American Advocate from 1972-1973, are included, in addition to non-University publications relating to Native American issues.

Established in 1995 as the Korean Studies Program, it was upgraded to the Center for Korean Studies in 2007, and renamed the Nam Center for Korean Studies in 2010. The mission of the Center is to promote research and study on Korea. The records group focuses on the events and programming and contains some information on the background of the program.

The Museums was comprised of the Museums of Anthropology, Zoology, and Paleontology, the Herbarium, and the Museum of Natural History (formerly, the Exhibit Museum). The record group consists of committee files; records related to the construction of the Museums building, including correspondence with architect Albert Kahn; topical files of directors including Alexander Ruthven and Carl Guthe; and topical files of Irving G. Reimann, prefect of exhibits.

The records of the University of Michigan Museums measure four linear feet (and one oversize folder) and date from 1863 to 1976. The great majority of the material, however, falls between 1930 and 1970. The files have been arranged alphabetically.

The bulk of the material consists of files created from two sources: various committees involved in the Museums' governance or Irving Reimann. The committee records are detailed and are particularly complete for the Operating Committee (1945-1956). This committee's documentation is supplemented by various other committee records.

Most of the records created by Reimann relate to the planning or construction of exhibits, as well as the public role of the Museums. This material makes up the bulk of the non-committee files, supplemented by an extensive run of reports (1935-1969). A few records created before Reimann's appointment also exist. These are generally items authored by either Guthe or Ruthven. Of particular interest from Ruthven's era are files (located under "Building") discussing the construction of the Museums building between 1925 and 1928. Records include substantive correspondence between Ruthven and the building's architect, Albert Kahn. Guthe is represented by the Works Progress Administration's Michigan Museum project (located under "Works Progress Administration, Statewide Museum Project").

Formed in 1996, the M-Pathways Project was charged with the design and implementation of new administrative information systems for the University of Michigan, which had previously used the Michigan Terminal System (MTS). As part of this project, the University was a Beta partner for the development of the PeopleSoft Student Administrative System. Includes Strategic Data Plan, project charter, scope documents, project methodology, performance support plans and project design and implementation deliverables relating to the organization and processes of the M-Pathways Project. Also contains archived websites and snapshots of the Lotus Notes databases used to store the design deliverables for the project. The databases include information related to the technical infrastructure, technical issues, and development of technical standards.

When the M-Pathways Project started in the Fall of 1996, several decisions were made about the way the design and implementation of the five new information systems would proceed. One of these decisions was how to organize project documentation. It was decided to centralize the team's work in a number of Lotus Notes databases. While project communications within Lotus Notes indicate that using "Notes" was very new for most project members, however, it was considered the most useful electronic storage format at the time. Several databases were initially set up, and over the course of the project additional databases were added. The earliest databases include the Big Ten Discussion and the Strategic Data Plan Documentation Library. For each of the databases, whether stored in paper or electronic format, the archivist has documented the original structure and views available within the database. This documentation includes title of database, date created, quantity, bulk dates, preservation format, and database views. This information is in a folder titled "Archivist's Documentation on Lotus Notes Databases" located in Box 1 of the record group. The record group consists of six series: Communications, Organizational, Student Administration, Technology Administration, Videotape, and Website.

In addition to producing creative and instructional videos, Michigan Media also offers event coverage services. The record group consists of digital video recordings of University of Michigan events that occurred during the Fall 2016 through Fall 2019 terms, excluding the Spring summer session of each year. Particularly well represented are recordings of events associated with the Gerald R. These events include lectures and lecture series, conferences, symposia, and commencement ceremonies. Particularly well represented are recordings of events associated with the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy; Physics Department of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; and the Wallace House, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships. The collection does not include recordings of events that occurred during the spring-summer terms.

The records of the Men's Glee Club date from 1886 to 2012 and were received in several major accessions. The first accession, covering 1886-1985 and 1991, includes four linear feet of manuscript, printed, and photographic material as well as posters, scrapbooks, and sound recordings in a variety of formats. The first accession has been divided into five series: Chronological File, Philip A. Duey Material, Photographs, Sound Recordings, Scrapbooks, and Archived Website.

The 1995 accession of the records of the Men's Glee Club were comprised of two linear feet of correspondence, photographs, and topical files ranging from 1919 to 1994. Items of particular interest include a folder of historical writings, which provides anecdotes, reflections, and facts about the club prepared for an exhibit on club history. The Press Releases folder is also of note, as it reflects information given out by the club to newspapers and other media of the towns they visited. Both of these folders are found in the Topical series. The records of this accession are divided into 3 series: Correspondence, Topical, and Visual Materials.

The 2010 accession to the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club records is organized into one series. The Sound Recordings series, 1952-1987, (10 linear feet) is comprised of University of Michigan Men's Glee Club concert recordings, including its annual fall and spring concert series. Many of the boxes of tape reel also include a concert program and concert set list.

The 2012 accession consisted entirely of digital materials (scanned images, audio files, video files, and still images) that added content to the Chronological Files series and established a China Concert Tour series. The 2018 accession consisted of phonograph records, which have been added to the Sound Recordings series, and publications.

Medical-Surgical Nursing Area (University of Michigan) records, 1960-1990

The records of the University of Michigan Medical-Surgical Nursing Area contain the records for the Medical-Surgical Area and the records of the School of Nursing for the years 1960 to 1990. The records contain committee minutes and administrative documents from Medical-Surgical Nursing Area Chairpersons and the Undergraduate Program Coordinators.

The records of the Medical-Surgical Area measure 17 linear feet. The collection dates from 1960 to 1990, although most of the 1960-1975 material pertains only to the Area's graduate program. The poor order in which the records were received necessitated the imposition of an artificial arrangement, except in selected instances. Moreover, many of the meeting and committee minutes series are missing one or more sets of minutes per year. Reflecting the nature of the material, the collection has been divided into three subgrouping: the records of the Medical-Surgical Area, the records of the School of Nursing, and papers of individual faculty and staff members. The School of Nursing subgroup contains those records collected by the Area which pertain to the School as a whole, rather than to the Area in particular. It is expected that these files will be gradually reduced or eliminated when the University Archives accessions the records of the School of Nursing for those relevant years.

Later accessions include continuations of files from earlier accessions and papers of faculty members Arleen Hegedus, 1973-1985 and Josephine Sana, 1978-1981. The Hegedus materials run two linear feet and fall into two broad subseries, course materials and topical files. The Sana materials consists of a small topical file which seems complementary to the Hegedus topical file.

A dual degree program established in 1979 between the Medical School and the graduate school allowing students to complete the requirements for the Ph.D. and M.D. degree on an accelerated pace aimed at producing research scientists. The records of the Medical Scientist Training Program are predominantly agendas and minutes of committee meetings. The University of Michigan's first professional school; the Medical School record group includes historical and administrative records related to the school and its faculty and administrators, 1850-2010.

The records of the Medical School span over 160 years, beginning in 1850 and continuing through 2010. They include 389.7 linear feet of material, 10 oversize volumes, 9 oversize folders of miscellaneous documents, and 3.3 GB of digital material stored online. The records include dean's correspondence and subject files, executive committee minutes, faculty minutes, annual reports of departments, school accreditation and review files, a variety of special reports and studies, and extensive files on the Replacement Hospital Project (Taubman Center). The record group also contains photo prints depicting faculty, students and facilities, including a remarkable series of photographs taken by J. Jefferson Gibson circa 1893.

The Medical School records have been organized into five subgroups: Dean's Records, Subordinate Administrative Officers, Faculty Records, Audio-Visual Materials, and Miscellaneous records. Within each subgroup there are a number of series and these series may be further subdivided to reflect the date span of the records received in each accession.

The Medical School records have been received in several accessions and the physical arrangement of the records (the number order of the boxes) reflects the various installments in which they were received. The accessions sometimes reflected the tenure of a particular dean or other administrator, but frequently appear to have been somewhat arbitrary transfers of files. Records from individual subgroups, series and subseries often continue across multiple accessions--sometimes with consecutive date ranges, but often with overlapping date spans.

In this finding aid the records are described in their intellectual order -- subgroups and series are brought together irrespective of the particular accession in which they were received. As a result, in the detailed contents listing the box number order will not always be consecutive.

The television production studio and media services unit of the University of Michigan, commonly referred to as "Michigan Media." It was formed in 1978 through the merger of the university Television Center and the university Audio-Visual Education Center. The Television Center began producing educational programs for broadcast on commercial and public stations in 1950. The Audio-Visual Education Center produced films for the university and operated a film distribution library. The Media Resources Center closed in 1986. The collection consists of documentary type film and video and film and video of television programs produced by the Media Resources Center and its predecessors.

Archives Films

The "archival films": consist of documentary style, 16mm film footage of a variety of University of Michigan events, buildings, and personalities. The series originated in 1959 when the Television Center began a project to create a "university film archives." Some of this footage was shot for the purpose of being incorporated into television programs, but much of the filming was done simply to create a film record of the university. Filming was done on a regular basis through about 1972. After that date the Michigan Media collection includes comparatively few "archival" films.

The subject matter of the archival films falls into several broad categories:

  1. Series AF -- Archives Films and Series FF -- Film File
    • Ceremonial - including footage of awards ceremonies, inaugurations, graduations, building groundbreakings and dedications
    • Campus scenes - buildings and construction sites, students on the Diag, and general activity on campus
    • Athletic events and marching band performances
    • Student activities -- including protests, fraternity/sorority activities, homecoming, course registration, and social events.
    • Faculty and administrator interviews
    • Visiting dignitaries and participants in special programs and conferences on campus.
    • Films collected by the Television Center - these include several films from the 1920s and 1930s
  2. Series AVEC Film File
    • Original footage shot for use in Audio-Visual Education Center films

Films in the three archival series range from a few minutes to more than an hour in length. The films may be negatives, original positives, or work prints. Some are identified as "trims," i.e. original footage edited out of finished productions. The work prints have often been cut and spliced and portions may be missing. Several titles were originally recorded on either two- or one-videotape reels or directly on 3/4-inch videotape cassette.

The early films, ca 1953-ca.1963, are generally black and white. After 1963 color film is more common. Many of the films, especially, from the early years, are silent. For some of these there are accompanying 16mm magnetic sound tracks or 1/4-inch reel-to-reel audio tapes.

The film description part of the finding aid is arranged by series film number or titles. Film numbers were assigned by the Television Center in an approximate chronological order. The description of individual films is based on a card File created by the Television Center and on a viewing of each film by Bentley staff.

The descriptive record for each film includes the film number; title; date; a brief summary of the content of the film; a listing of significant persons appearing in the film; and technical information on the color, sound, polarity, and length of the film.

The films are stored in canisters, usually on a core rather than a reel. A film number generally refers to an individual film title. There is sometimes more than one film number in a canister and occasionally more than one film number on a single reel or core. Alternate versions of a title are indicated by a lower case letter.

The Television Center gave the films titles which are more or less descriptive. These titles have been retained except for a few instances in which a more descriptive title was assigned or in which a uniform title was created for all parts of a multi-reel film. The individual reels of multi-part titles are designated by a lower case letter, e.g. 98a, 98b, 98c. For some titles the may be more than one film, possibly a negative, positive, work print, or other version. A few tittles have been digitized and are available on DVD and streaming files.

The listing for each film or program in includes a Title, date of production, and abstract/summary of the content of the film and ,when available, the names of persons or organizations featured in the film. University of Michigan faculty and staff are identified by departmental or administrative affiliation (e.g. Peter Gosling, UM-Geog. A list of abbreviations used is included in the Additional Descriptive Data Section of this finding aid.) Technical information for the films is provided in the format: Original: 16mm film, pos, b/w, sil, 343, 00:09:35. The order of the information is:

  1. Format -- film / videotape / magnetic sound track
  2. Polarity -- neg (negative) /. Pos (positive) / wp (work print)
  3. Color -- b/w or color
  4. Sound -- silent / sound / sof (sound on film)/ at (accompanying 1/4-inch audiotape)
  5. Length -- expressed in feet (footage value is sometimes an estimate)
  6. Running time -- in the form 01:33:25 (hours:minutes:seconds)
  7. (in cases where there are several versions of a title, there may be multiple values for each category)

Television Programs and AVEC Films

The Television Programs consist of 16mm kinescope films and two-inch and 1-inch videotapes of programs produced by the Center for distribution to commercial and educational television stations. The collection represents only a portion of the television programs produced by the Center. There were no extant copies of some programs when the library acquired the collection.

The films and videotapes in the Michigan Media collection were appraised and only a portion have been selected for permanent retention by the Bentley Historical Library. A number of appraisal criteria were used in determining which television programs and films were retained:

  1. subject matter relating to the University of Michigan;
  2. subject matter relating to the state of Michigan;
  3. subject matter of general, national interest;
  4. participation of prominent UM faculty or staff;
  5. participation of prominent Michigan personalities;
  6. participation of persons of national or international significance;
  7. programs marking significant technical or artistic developments at Michigan Media;
  8. award winning programs.

The television programs are organized by series created by the Center. The series for the most part reflect different type of programming the Center produced, from the earliest "telecourses" to the independent programs produced under the title "Understanding Our World". to the multi-part programs that were the core of the "University of Michigan Television Hour. See the History section for details on the different series.

The description for individual programs includes the title and date of the program, a unique id number, and an abstract of the content of the program with listing of the host and guests on the program. A program may exist in one or more formats: kinescope negative, kinescope positive and 1-inch or 2-inch videotape. Technical information for each program is recorded in the format16mm kinescope film, neg. #511, Pos. #665, 2-inch video #458. (the negative number was treated as a production and for some programs recorded originally on videotape a negative was not actually produced). The television programs were generally either twelve, fifteen or thirty minutes in length Most are black and white and all have sound.

In 2009 a selection of television programs and films and tapes were digitized. for each tape or film selected a preservation Beta SP tape was made as well as a DVD use copy and a streaming file (mpeg4 and Flash). For some films a high resolution digital copy was made as well (mpeg2). The finding aid lists the original format(s) and the derivative formats for the digitized items.

The Marketing Communications office offers publicity and announcement services for the University of Michigan. They incorporate graphic design, editorial services, website creation, and project planning to assist campus units with the creation of brochures, bulletins, websites, posters, event programs, and recruiting materials. The Marketing Communications record group contains a few early records of the department however the bulk of the materials include sample products created by the office and photographic images used to create their publications. The photographs contain University of Michigan images including departmental programs, buildings, campus scenes, and faculty portraits.

The Marketing Communications record group is divided into three series including Administrative Records, Products, and Visual Materials. Materials within the Products series were sampled to produce a representative body of the office's work. Some items were removed to existing publication record groups. Many photographs within the Visual Materials series originated from University of Michigan News and Information Services. These items were removed from the Marketing Communications records because they can be found within the News and Information Services record group at the Bentley Historical Library.

The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is a University of Michigan life sciences research and education organization dedicated to "advanc[ing] the understanding of the fundamental processes of life, and to pioneer new ideas to improve human health". The Life Sciences Institute records document the activities of the LSI and related organizations and includes reports, strategic planning documentation, photographs, publications, digital audio and video recordings, and print-outs of the LSI's 2003 website.

The Publications series (0.4 linear ft.) is divided into two subseries: Unit Publications and Student Publications.

The Unit Publications subseries includes bibliographies, publications catalogs, and calendars and flyers describing the brown bag lunch series and the Chinese film series. This subseries also contains newsletters such as Center for Chinese Studies and Alumni News. The Center for Chinese Studies cooperated with the Center for Japanese Studies to produce the newsletters CCS-CJS News, CCS-CJS News Update, and the East Asian Studies Newsletter.

The Student Publications subseries includes three titles from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Ta Tzu Pao was first published in 1969 and continued to be published monthly during the academic year. Unfortunately, the Bentley Library does not hold a complete run of this publication. It ceased publication in 1970. The Dodder was published in 1970. The title was changed to Voices in 1971. A fourth publication entitled Spring-Autumn Papers was a graduate student journal published in 1979 and 1980.

Most of these unit and student publications are in English, though there are occasional passages in Chinese.

A cross-disciplinary center for the study of Chinese history, culture and contemporary Chinese society at the University of Michigan, includes administrative records of the Center and information on research, lecture series, exhibits and other activities of the center.

The Center for Chinese Studies record group consists primarily of material for the years 1962 to 1994. Overall strengths of the collection include documentation of PASE, records of the Asia Library (1962-1982), and course information from curriculum development (1960s). Yearly budget and financial records are fairly complete, except for the period from 1971 to 1976. The gap is unfortunate because it was during these years that the Ford Foundation grants ended and the center had to search for new funding sources. Other material is broadly illustrative of the diversity of the tasks undertaken by the center.

The record group, as received by the Bentley Library, mostly consisted of loose documents and random topical folders. It now consists of topical folders arranged alphabetically within five series. The series Directors Correspondence and the Asia Library are in their original order, as received by the library; Administrative Records, Activities, and Printed Materials are artificial groupings created to provide order and easy access to the records.

The Bentley Historical Library received another large transfer of records from the Center for Chinese Studies in 1997. Spanning the years 1966 through 1994, these consist primarily of administrative files and information pertaining to the activities which the Center for Chinese Studies organized or in which it participated. The records were relatively well organized when it was attained by the Bentley Library. The original order of the records was retained with the exception of some files pertaining to the East Asian Capital Campaign. These were reorganized so that they could be located in one series.

University of Michigan unit established to coordinate loan of library materials to high schools and various local organizations, and to supplement the program of the Extension Service. Administrative files, including historical material, annual and monthly reports, and subject files; and published material consisting of bulletins, and printed reading lists and bibliographies.

The Library Extension Services' collection dates from 1916 to 1980. It is divided into two series, an administrative file and unit publications. The administrative file (1916-1980) is arranged alphabetically, one exception being historical material that has been grouped together at the beginning of the series. Included in the series is a nearly complete run of annual reports and information regarding branch libraries. Information regarding the Detroit branch is particularly extensive, and includes a number of annual reports (1959-1980). There is information regarding a cooperative project sponsored by the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Western Michigan University in the Saginaw area (ca. 1967). The series also contains several folders of information regarding a Special Committee re Cooperative Services of the Michigan Library Association (1960-1967).

The Publications series (1919-1979), has been supplemented by material collected previously by the Bentley Library and represents all of the publications of LES available at the Bentley. Included are the LES Bulletin of Information (1919-1920 to 1952), recommended books for secondary school libraries (1931-1952), alumni reading lists (1931-1948), and bibliographies on selected subjects (ca. 1975-ca. 1979).

The Photographs series includes images showing staff, exhibitions and other activities of the Library Extension Service and views of the library facilities.

Researchers should note that, with the exception of Illuminator (in the Library Development series), all of the newsletters in the record group are more or less incomplete. More complete runs of certain titles, notably University Library Update, University of Michigan Librarian, and University of Michigan Library Newsletter, are held at the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. The University Library System also retains numerous additional library publications within its collections that are not included in this records group. The Library Clipping File was a vertical file maintained by the University of Michigan Library Reference Department roughly from the early 1920s to the early 1980s. It largely consists of newspaper clippings on numerous topics relating to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the State of Michigan, but includes some press releases, pamphlets, and printed ephemera as well.

This collection represents the clipping file as maintained by the Reference Department of the University of Michigan Library. The file was begun around 1920. Compilation of newspaper clippings largely ended by the mid 1970s, although some items date from the early 1980s. The collection consists of Four series of clipping files: University of Michigan, University of Micahign Faculty, Ann Arbor, and the State of Michigan. The clipping file is a useful starting point for information on particular events, individuals, issues, organizations, and subjects. In some instances the clippings supplement material held in the archives and provide detailed background on a variety of subjects as presented by local newspapers. Clippings in the University of Michigan series were tipped into folder often using mounting hinges, thus maintaining a rough chronology within folders. Clippings in the Ann Arbor and State of Michigan series are loose, although some articles have been clipped together with a scrap of paper noting specific chronological periods.

The Ann Arbor series and the State of Michigan series were transferred to the Bentley Library in 2004. These two series include a few items from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and retain scattered pamphlets and other non-newspaper printed material. The folder headings for the two series represent headings used by the Library, with limited cross references added by Bentley staff. However, as in the University of Michigan series, there is significant overlap in the file names for the Ann Arbor and State of Michigan series This is most notable in the State of Michigan series, which includes a large run of subjects under the heading of "Michigan -- ." Researchers looking for Michigan topics in this series should check both under the "Michigan" hierarchy and under the topic name in the overall alphabetical list.

The series contain audiocassettes, bound copies of the transcripts and subject indexes, and a small number of computer discs with transcript files. Transcripts and cassettes are arranged alphabetically by interviewee.

The interviews typically include discussions of the interviewees' backgrounds and education, and subsequent commentary on legal education. The administration of the law school is well covered in these interviews which also add significant detail to the operation of the University as a whole.

Records of the Law School document the evolution of legal education at the University of Michigan as well as tenures of various deans and faculty. Documentation includes historical and class files; student organizations and activities; planning and construction of Law School buildings; information on William W. Cook and his bequest; topical files; deans' correspondence; reports and minutes. Also included are materials related to the Thomas M Cooley and William W. Cook lecture series and portraits of faculty and students, photographs of activities of the Judge Advocate General's School held at the Law School during World War II, the construction of the Law Quadrangle and Law Library addition, and student activities.

The Law School Records begin in 1852 and span the years through the end of the twentieth century. The records document the history of legal education at the University of Michigan, the administration of the Law School, and the lives of some of the scholars who have studied and taught there.

The physical arrangement of the records reflects the various accessions of material that have been received from the Law School over the years. This finding aid is structured to reflect the intellectual organization of the records - continuing series and like materials have been brought together regardless of when the records were transferred to the library. The records of the University of Michigan International Center contain administrative records from the various Directors of the center. These materials include documentation on the establishment of the University of Michigan's foreign student exchange scholarships, records relating to the development of important programs and national associations for international students, housing surveys between 1965-1971, printed materials such as annual reports, newsletters, and manuals, scrapbooks, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

The collection is divided into six series. The first series, Historical Files, contains early filing methods of the Directors and a small amount of background on the Center. It also contains early papers from 1927-1930 on the Cosmopolitan Club and spring trips for foreign students. The second series, Director's Files, has been organized according to the filing systems employed by each of the Center's first four directors: J. Raleigh Nelson (1933-1943); Esson M. Gale (1943-1954); James M. Davis (1954-1964); and Robert B. Klinger (1964-1971). Files of each director comprise separate sub-series. Each of these four sub-series includes administrative records such as papers of the Board of Governors, minutes of committees connected to the International Center, and annual reports. Within each sub-series there are files of particular importance and interest. Photographs compose the third series, including one scrapbook of directors, students, and visitors to the International Center. Printed materials comprise the fourth series. The fifth series is made up of newspaper clippings. The sixth series consists of National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (Publications).

The Inter-fraternity Council (IFC) is the administrative and organizing body for the undergraduate social fraternities at the University of Michigan. Records include meeting minutes, officers reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, printed materials. One bound volume of handwritten meeting minutes from 1912-1930, provides the only record of earliest activities of the IFC.

The records of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) measure 3 linear feet and date from 1912 to 1994, with the bulk of records falling between 1960 and 1994. The records consist of meeting minutes, officer's reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, and printed materials. Despite the range of years covered by the collection as a whole, no one time period is completely documented. For additional information on the IFC, the researcher should consult the record groups under "University of Michigan Fraternity Office" and "University of Michigan Housing Division" and the "University of Michigan Vice President for Student Affairs" at the Bentley Historical Library.

The directories are alphabetical lists of student telephone numbers and addresses for the classes of 1995, 1998, 1999, and 2002 published in 1994-1995. There is a similar directory for the class of 2004 published in 1996-1997. There is also a master address list for alumni compiled in 1996.

Inteflex issued its student manual from 1975 to 1997. The title changed several times. Published under the title Student's Guide to Survival in the Inteflex Program from 1975 to 1980 the title was modified to the Student's Guide to the Inteflex Program in 1981. From 1982 through 1984 it was called The Inteflex Student Handbook. In 1985 the title reverted to the Student's Guide to Survival in the Inteflex Program. The manuals are arranged alphabetically by title.

The Bentley Library holds Inteflex newsletters dating from 1974 to the present. These are arranged alphabetically by title. The Flex99 was a newsletter edited by and for members of the Inteflex Class of 1999. The Bentley Historical Library holds three issues from 1993 to 1994. The I-Opener was the newsletter written for students to describe their preceptorship experiences. We have issues from 1988 to 1996.

Alumni newsletters cover the years from 1982 to 2002. The Inteflex Alumni News was published from 1982 through 1983. In 1984 it became Reflexions: The Inteflex Alumni Newsletter. The Bentley Library has a nearly complete run of this publication except for volume 5 from 1986 and the issues for 2001.

The unit newsletter was titled Inteflex News in 1974 and continued to be published until 1995. There is one issue of Inteflex Program Newsletter dated 1976. The Inteflex Newsletter was issued from 1977 to 1979. In 1994 yet another newsletter entitled Inflexions was published. This newsletter ceased publication in 2002.

In 1972 the Inteflex External Advisory Committee met to assess the Inteflex program. The report compiled for that meeting gives a brief history, the objectives and design elements of Inteflex, committee structure and membership, and a description of the curriculum and courses offered. In addition under the heading "Website" there is a printout of the Inteflex website dating from 1997.

The Student Publications series (.1 linear foot) includes three anthologies by the students of Inteflex dating from 1995 through 1997. Each was published by the first year Inteflex class.

The Integrated Premedical-Medical Program, commonly called Inteflex, combined undergraduate and medical school education into one specialized curriculum program at the University of Michigan. Inteflex was conceived to allow an integrated, flexible program through a liberal arts education offered by the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts while also obtaining a medical degree through the Medical School. Inteflex began as a six-year program in 1971, expanded to seven years in 1982, and again to eight years in 1994. The Inteflex program accepted its last entering group of students in 1998.

The Integrated Premedical-Medical Program (Inteflex) Records are divided into six series: Administrative, Committees, Curricula, Reports, Students, and Visual Materials. An earlier two linear foot collection came to the library in 1996. Due to the size of the accessions following the program's discontinuance, the older records were absorbed to make one holistic record group. Yearly classes are known by several names throughout the papers. The two most commonly used classifications are by the year the class entered Inteflex and also by the year of graduation from the Medical School. Classes may also be known by their status in the program, such as I4 meaning the student is in the fourth year of Inteflex. To create the least confusion possible, classes within the finding aid are filed under the Medical School graduation year.

Institute of Science and Technology (University of Michigan) records, 1950-1989

University of Michigan scientific research center. Office files relating to the activities of the unit, and to the research divisions that IST administered, notably the Willow Run Laboratories, the Great Lakes and Marine Waters Center, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, and others.

The records of the Institute of Science and Technology of the University of Michigan cover the period 1959 to 1987, from the establishment of the unit to the year of its regentally-approved reorganization. Scattered documents prior to 1959 and after 1987 will be found, but not in great quantity.

The record group consists of thirteen series. Except for some modifications and combining of similar materials, these are series that were maintained by the institute office. Types of documents present within these series include memoranda, reports, minutes of meetings, budgetary and financial papers, correspondence, proposal and grant documents, subject files, and photographs. The researcher should note that much material was retained by the IST office at the time of the 1989 transfer of records to the library. Thus, records for expected areas of interest might still be in the possession of IST. Periodic additions to this record group are expected.

Although of obvious value for its documentation of the history and activities of IST, the records of the institute have prime interest for the researcher interested in the study of research at a major educational institution. In particular, the records of IST document the development of the relationship between a university and state and national governments for the purpose of fostering research in areas deemed mutually advantageous. On the national level, especially in the 1960s, this research centered on areas of national defense and environmental study. On the state level, research was intended to improve the economy: to develop the state's technological and industrial base, thereby reducing the debilitating consequences of depression and unemployment that had periodically plagued Michigan's one-industry economy.

Of some value for the study of the content of research undertaken under IST auspices, the records here are of greater importance for the study of the environment required for research programs to be successful. The specifics of research will be found in scientific notebooks, laboratory experiments, and published studies. The IST records document a different story: the need to search out, administer, and balance competing requests for funding, space, equipment, and trained personnel. The IST files, in effect, document the management of research.

Beyond these research possibilities, the records of IST are illustrative of the changing patterns of technological research over the past thirty years. Founded with specific economic goals in mind, IST (with the administrative transfer of Willow Run Laboratories) managed programs having national defense implications. With the completion of these programs, and especially as the university ceased its responsibility for Willow Run, IST turned to areas of new research or areas of special significance to Michigan (perhaps the most notable examples being in the areas of highway safety and water-related research).

Aberbach-Walker Detroit Riot Studies records, 1967-1971

Records, 1967-1971, of the studies on the Detroit riot of 1967 conducted by Joel Aberbach and Jack Walker, staff members of the Institute of Public Policy Studies of the University of Michigan. Includes survey forms (1967, 1968 and 1971) and audio-tapes of interviews with Detroit civic leaders and administrative records of the project.

Measuring 24 linear feet, the records are divided into three series, one for each "wave" of interviews. The 1967 Survey Forms (13 linear feet) consists solely of completed survey forms. Each form is approximately 40 pages in length and asked respondents to answer a wide variety of searching questions. Information is regularly recorded on survey scales, but interviewers frequently augmented this information through annotations on the form.

The 1968 Survey material (3 linear feet) consists primarily of completed 1968 survey forms, which were about 30 pages each in length and similar in content to the 1967 instrument. In addition there are interviews with civic leaders that consist of both a survey form and a tape recording of the interview.

The 1971 Survey material (8 linear feet) consists primarily of survey forms that are very similar to those used in 1968.

Interdisciplinary institute at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University for the study of aging. Records include administrative files relating to the activities, research, publications and conferences of the Institute's University of Michigan program; audio-visual material, and photographs.

The records of the Institute of Gerontology cover the period 1948 to 1987. They are composed of the office files of several staff members at the University of Michigan. (Not included are the records of that part of the IoG housed at Wayne State University.) Included are the scattered files of four of the institute's co-directors, the chairman of the Executive Board, the editor of the Occasional Papers series, the annual conference coordinators, and the directors of certain projects. Also included are correspondence and memos, financial information, grant proposals and reports, minutes, and printed matter. The programs for the Annual Conferences on Aging provide a "who's who" for many of the individuals represented in the collection.

The records provide an overview of the activities, policies, and personnel of the IoG from its inception. Some substantive and seminal memos and reports exist which throw light on the development of programs and on the value of certain projects. Most of the documents are routine, however, and serve primarily to introduce the researcher to the various units and activities of the institute. For details and insights into particular aspects of the IoG, the researcher should consult the separate collections of the various co-directors, directors of research, and project directors, as well as the institute's publications.

The records of the Institute consist of forty-nine linear feet of manuscripts and printed materials. The records date form 1965 to 1983. The record group is divided into four broad Series: Administrative Files (boxes 1-7), Research Files (boxes 8-18), Continuing Education (boxes 19-48), and Photographs (box 49). Of these, only the Administrative Files have been closely processed. The Administration Files are divided into several subseries, the most substantive of which are History of ISMRRD, Committees, Institute Reviews, and Projects, Proposals and Reports.

The Institute for the Humanities, founded in 1987, was developed in response to a recognized need for renewed dialogue across disciplines. Originally oriented around the humanities and the arts, the center soon evolved into a widely recognized venue for international scholarship. The records are largely comprised of video and sound cassettes documenting a diverse range of events.

There are two series in the Institute for the Humanities record group: Administrative Records and Audio-Visual Material. The records, largely comprised of videotapes and cassette tapes, provide dynamic evidence of the steady growth and refinement of an initiative that greatly enriched teaching and scholarship in the humanities at the University of Michigan.
