The Howard F. Barnum World War I photograph album contains 216 items relating to Barnum's service in the American Expeditionary Forces. The majority of the collection is comprised of personal photo-postcards of his time overseas and postcards from his travels with the Army of Occupation in France, Germany, and Luxembourg. Also included are photographs, letters, a print, and ephemera.
The album begins with 92 personal photo-postcards, many of which have a short handwritten caption on the front. The majority were taken while Barnum was stationed near the Rhine River, in Mayen, Germany. They show daily life, the ammunition dump, M.O.R.S. details, studio portraits, monuments and castles along the Rhine, and a Rhine River boat tour. One image is of the men he served with, "Billet #6," and lists the name and hometown of each man. There are a few images included from his training at Camp Hancock in Augusta, Georgia.
Seemingly unrelated to Barnum’s service, are five photos likely taken in the United States of construction on a neighborhood street. Following, are an image of captured American soldiers, one of a simulated gas attack, and 15 smaller images similar in content to the photo-postcards. Most of these smaller images have handwritten captions on the back.
This album includes a total of 78 picture postcards include a complete collection of 20 black and white views from the painting Panthéon de la Guerre. Other locations depicted include Paris, Southampton, Koblenz, and Camp Dodge and Rock Island in the United States
The last portion of the album contains ephemera from Barnum's military service, with the exception of one letter from August 6, 1905 written by Barnum to his mother while on vacation with his father and brother. Other items include the board game Trench Checkers, a Third Army Carnival program, a Mother’s Day pamphlet, an honorable discharge chevron, a USS Santa Paula billet card, and a "Souvenir Roster of the New York Masonic Club of the Army of Occupation."

The Hudson Valley African Americans photograph album contains 25 photographic portraits and 1 silhouette portrait of African Americans in New York State’s Hudson Valley region.
The album (25.5 x 22 cm) has red and orange velvet covers with silver adornments and clasp while the pages are faux wood boards. Contents include 10 cabinet cards, 5 tintypes, 8 cartes de visite, 1 real photo postcard, 1 snapshot, and 1 silhouette. All or most subjects appear to be African American and include men, women, and children of a variety of ages. The silhouette shows a man in profile wearing a bowler hat smoking a cigar.
Images of particular note include portraits of an older man with a long beard, an older woman wearing black mourning clothing, a younger woman posing next to what appears to be some type of doll or taxidermied animal, a portrait of a woman taken by Pirie MacDonald on pg. 11 (produced at some point prior to MacDonald's decision to exclusively photograph men), and two carte de visite copies of a portrait of a bearded man with lighter skin.

Most of these images appear to have been taken by an anonymous photographer who referred to himself as "Bob" and who may have been associated with a Philadelphia-based contracting firm, Charles A. Sims & Co., that was hired by the United Verde Mine. Many of the photographs have handwritten captions and bear evidence of having previously been mounted in a scrapbook; many captions have been rendered partially illegible after being affected during the removal process. The captions directly refer to details within the photographs, particularly related to mining operations.
A total of 33 real photo postcards are present, including 14 locally produced images by The Fotoplace and Areldson Studio. Several real photo postcards bear correspondence, and "Bob" appears to have sent some of these images to a woman named "Kitty."
Items of particular interest include at least two photographs depicting J. E. O'Rourke (the superintendent of the United Verde Mine); multiple views of Jerome, Arizona, including street and bird’s-eye views; multiple views of mining facilities and encampments; three images of Native Americans (likely Yavapai); two views of the Montezuma Castle cliff dwellings; a view of stalactites taken from the inside of a cavern; and eight images documenting the expulsion of I.W.W. strikers in Jerome in July 1917 by local citizens who were organized into a vigilance committee. Also present are at least five images taken near present-day Tonto Basin, Arizona, north of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam, which may be associated with another project on which the Charles A. Sims & Co. firm was contracted. While the dam itself does not appear in any of these images, the photographer wrote that the area depicted was to be inundated. Since the dam was constructed by the U.S. Reclamation Service between 1903 and 1911, these images are likely older than those taken in Jerome.

This collection is made up of 5 items related to Joyce Kilmer and his poem "Trees." Items include a holograph manuscript of the poem; an original copy of the magazine Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, in which the poem was first published; a partial manuscript musical setting of the poem signed by its composer, Oscar Rasbach, who set it to music in 1922; and a real photo postcard portrait of Kilmer. The Leonard W. Wells photograph collection consists primarily of photographs of various sizes, separated into four series: Approach to Tunnel; Construction Sites and Workers; River Construction; and Other Photographs. These divisions are meant to indicate the content of scenes found in the collection. The collection also contains photographic postcards, all of which are located in the Construction Sites and Workers series or the Other Photographs series. Most of the images depict various views along the railway path, stages of the tunnel's construction, or groups of construction workers. One photograph features the first sinking of a tunnel tube section on October 1, 1907. Although the majority of images show the construction of the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel, the locations found in other images may be outside of Detroit or Windsor. The Letters, Documents, and Other Manuscripts of the Duane Norman Diedrich Collection is a selection of individual items compiled by manuscript collector Duane Norman Diedrich (1935-2018) and the William L. Clements Library. The content of these materials reflect the life and interests of D. N. Diedrich, most prominently subjects pertinent to intellectual, artistic, and social history, education, speech and elocution, the securing of speakers for events, advice from elders to younger persons, and many others.

The E. L. Diedrich Collection is a selection of manuscript items compiled by his son Duane Norman Diedrich and dedicated to his memory. The content of these letters, documents, and other manuscripts reflect the life and interests of E. L. "Bud" Diedrich (1904-1988), most prominently subjects pertinent to government, business, and patriotic music. Items include correspondence from early United States politicians, discussing aspects of the developing Federal government and political parties; letters respecting the U.S. Presidency; holograph manuscripts and correspondence respecting patriotic music, such as the Battle Hymn of the Republic; and much more.

This collection (0.5 linear feet) contains the correspondence of three generations of the Lincoln family, descendants of General Benjamin Lincoln. The primary correspondents are Theodore Lincoln, Benjamin Lincoln, Thomas Lincoln, and Arthur Lincoln of Dennysville, Maine.
The first 8 items are personal letters to Theodore and Hannah Mayhew Lincoln in Dennysville, Maine. From 1800-1817, acquaintances and family members provided news from towns including Machias, Maine, and Boston, Massachusetts. From 1818-1835, Theodore Lincoln corresponded with his son Benjamin, who attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, until 1822, and studied medicine until 1827. He offered his son educational advice, noted the importance of maintaining bodily health, and shared news from Dennysville. Benjamin Lincoln later wrote to his parents and to his sister Mary about his life in Boston, Massachusetts, where he began practicing medicine in 1827, and about his career as a lecturer at the University of Vermont and the University of Maryland. Benjamin's siblings Thomas and Mary ("Molly") Lincoln wrote to him about life in Dennysville. James Savage, a cousin in Boston, wrote to Benjamin about the rumored appearance of Asiatic cholera in North America (June 24, 1832).
The Lincoln family received condolences from friends and family members following the deaths of Benjamin Lincoln in 1835 and Mary Lincoln in 1844. After Theodore Lincoln's death in 1852, several letters concern his finances with the University of Vermont. During the 1840s-1860s, Thomas Lincoln received personal letters from George F. Talbot. Civil War-era correspondence largely pertains to Theodore Lincoln's estate, and letters from Benjamin Lincoln to a cousin mention the prices of goods during the war.
Between 1873 and 1883, Thomas Lincoln corresponded with his son Arthur. Many of the letters pertain to Arthur's problems after "a contemptible scrape" at Bowdoin College that resulted in his temporary suspension (May 20, 1877). Thomas scolded his son, provided advice, and wrote to the university's president. Arthur Lincoln wrote 6 letters to his father while traveling through Europe in 1880. Later material includes letters that Edmund Lincoln wrote while traveling in 1905, and a 1927 letter about an attempt to donate Dr. Benjamin Lincoln's library to the University of Vermont. George Cheever Shattuck of Harvard Medical School wrote to Arthur Lincoln's wife, declining to accept Dr. Benjamin Lincoln’s letters for his medical library (April 21, 1944).
Other items include financial records related to Benjamin and Theodore Lincoln, a typed list of books, photographs of furniture and of the inside of a home, a photograph of "M. [Shimotiusa]," and a photographic postcard of the interior of Longfellow's Wayside Inn in South Sudbury, Massachusetts.

The Matthilde Ittel photograph album contains 122 photographs, 19 postcards, and 26 pieces of ephemera and mainly includes snapshots of people, landscapes, and buildings in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario.
The album (18 x 27 cm) has black cloth covers with "Photographs" stamped on the front. Many of album compiler Matthilde Ittel’s family, friends, and colleagues are mentioned and pictured in this album, including William Baldwin Clipsham, Nettie E. Geyer, Freda Cloud, Mary Rieger Ittel, and Jessie Evelyn Ittel Kiel as well as staff of the W. E. Terhune Lumber Company. Numerous portraits are present throughout the album, many of which have been altered through cutting. Two images show a woman whose face has been entirely cut out, while many other images are cut along the lines of a person’s figure. Several images have had color added. The postcards primarily consist of images of destinations that the album creator visited such as the Bowery in New York City and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while the ephemeral items include a hotel card, a small wooden oar, and typed notes containing humorous writings and social commentaries.
Images of note include pictures of Ittel wearing a Gibson Girl hairstyle coupled with a quote regarding the advantage of women not having to wear trousers, portraits of Ittel’s mother Mary and sister Jessie, two real photograph postcards of cats, a postcard of the merchant ship Tillie Covert, postcards and notes from a trip to Ontario in 1908, photographs and postcards relating to a 1909 trip from Rochester to Montreal and West Point, several photographs of a 1911 trip to Philadelphia and the Delaware Water Gap, and a staged photograph located on the back inside cover captioned "An Actual Operation For Appendicitis.”

The Mugshots collection consists of approximately 100 photographic portraits produced between 1892 and 1920, the vast majority of which are mugshots. The collection includes real photographic postcards, mounted and unmounted paper prints, and one severely tarnished tintype. Also present are two fingerprint identification cards with handwritten lists containing names of numerous individuals represented in the collection. A small number of photographs appear to be standard studio portraits. Photographs range in size from 6 x 10.5 cm to 11 x 17 cm.
Many of the mugshots have printed and/or handwritten information on their versos, including names, known aliases, nationalities, birth dates/locations, occupations, arrest dates, names of arresting police officers, criminal charges, sentences, prison locations, remarks on physical appearances, and Bertillon measurements. Most of these images were produced in various places in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland, with Philadelphia being the most represented location. The mugshots are mainly of white male subjects, though there are also four mugshots of women present. Five African American individuals (four men, one women) are also pictured. A substantial number of mugshots are of individuals from immigrant backgrounds, including Italians, Irish, Austrians, Germans, Poles, Greeks, Jews, etc. Approximately 90 individuals are personally identified in total. Recorded criminal charges include shoplifting, pickpocketing, larceny, burglary, forgery, embezzlement, false pretense, flimflamming, auto theft, horse theft, conspiracy, attempted murder, and murder. Specific police departments and correctional facilities represented include the Pennsylvania Department of State Police, Harrisburg Department of Police, Philadelphia Bureau of Police, Hartford Police Department, Newark Department of Police, Auburn Prison, Sing Sing Prison, City of New York Police Department, City of Boston Police Department, Camden Bureau of Police, Baltimore Police Department, Bureau of Criminal Investigation for the New Jersey Reformatory in Rahway (now East Jersey State Prison), U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, City of Paterson Police Department, Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, Montgomery County Prison (Norristown), Columbus Department of Police, City of Wilkes-Barre Bureau of Police, Trenton Department of Public Safety, New York House of Refuge, and the Reading Department of Police.
