The Awards series (0.1 linear feet) is arranged alphabetically, contains certificates of appreciation from several project sites.

Background and History, 1972-1995 contains materials documenting the group's foundation and early years. Included are clippings of early press announcements and news articles, correspondence relating to early outreach activities, as well as the first year of Board/Action Committee minutes. Of note within the folder "Brochures, Clippings, and Outreach, 1981-1986" is a memo put out by the Federation of Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays regarding its objectives and rules for membership application. Also included are Lansing Area Chapter bylaws and a packet of informational material on the history, mission, and policy stands of the national organization.

The Background and Planning series (1968-1988) includes materials documenting the background and history of Earthworks, including clippings on the school, a history of the school written by Allan Schreiber, and various files relating to Pioneer High School unrest in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Planning documents consist of early founding material, including various proposals for alternative high schools and later Earthworks' planning documents.

Background Files (1968-1990; 2.5 linear ft.) consist of information maintained to give UPI employees quick references to certain subjects, events, and individuals. The files consist primarily of AP wire reports and press releases issued by individuals and companies.

The series Background Material, 1962-1999, (0.25 linear feet), is an alphabetically arranged sequence containing materials related to the development of codes of conduct on the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus. These include early policies aimed at establishing and adjudicating rules for student conduct on a broad scale (e.g. Rules of the University Community) as well as rules pertaining to a particular issue (e.g. Policy on Violent Intimidation on Campus). The series also contains documents noting changes to Regental bylaws governing the process and establishing domain for the development of such codes of conduct and Michigan state law related to speech codes.

The Background Materials series, (.10 linear feet, 1967-1999), includes a curriculum vitae with a chronological list of Sparling's choreographic works through the year 1999, a journal written while he was on tour in the Soviet Union in 1973, news clippings, and other biographical materials.
