Michigan Republican Party official, 1961-1969, assistant chairman of the national Republican Party, 1963-1964 and 1969-1970, candidate for, U.S. senate in 1964, and co-chair of ERAmerica, a national organization promoting the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Papers consist of correspondence, reports, speeches, organizational records of ERAmerica, scrapbooks and photographs.

The Elly McMillan Peterson papers document the career of a Republican party activist and official, an advocate of the Equal Rights Amendment, and candidate for the U.S. Senate. The papers, comprised largely of correspondence, reports, and memoranda, are organized into seven series: Republican Party Activities, ERAmerican, Other Organizational Activities, Personal/Biographical, Speeches, Photographs, Scrapbooks/Clippings.

The papers of Frank Egleston Robbins consist of materials from his work as the assistant to the university president, and his other activities within the university. The series are: Correspondence, Miscellaneous, Writings, Visual Materials and Assistant to the President Topical Files.


Georgianna M. Brackett photograph album, 1896-1901 (majority within 1896)

The Georgianna M. Brackett photograph album contains cyanotypes and other photographs taken at Smith College from 1896 to around 1901. The volume includes candid and posed pictures of Brackett and her classmates, teachers, room interiors, college buildings, and social gatherings.

The Georgianna M. Brackett photograph album (21cm x 27cm) contains 259 cyanotypes and other photographic prints documenting her experiences at Smith College from 1896 to around 1901. Most of the items are cyanotypes, and the album also includes collodion prints and platinum prints. Items are often pasted several to a page and some fill the entire page. Many have captions, often recording the name and class year of pictured students. The album has a pebbled brown leather cover. A printed program from a performance of the Smith College Glee, Banjo, and Mandolin Clubs on March 27, 1897, is laid into the front cover.

Brackett compiled pictures of her friends, instructors, and social activities, as well as pictures of the college and nearby buildings and scenery. Her album contains many pictures of women from several classes, taken individually and in groups; Brackett appears in some of the photographs. A number of photographs show dormitory rooms, some in Hubbard House. Also included are group photographs of Hubbard House residents; one shows women in Halloween costumes. Of note are three photographs of class mascots, including a young African American boy who was mascot for the class of 1899. Scenes from Ivy Day processions, a Smith College commencement ceremony, appear for a few different graduation classes. The volume includes scenes of large groups of students waiting to watch a basketball game outside and inside of the college gymnasium, pictures from a class rally, and group portraits of basketball teams representing the classes of 1898 and 1900. Also present are candid shots of Smith College teachers and the school's first president, Laurenus Clark Seelye, and studio portraits of unidentified young men and women. Brackett also collected exterior and interior shots of college buildings and students' residences, including some inside the campus art gallery, music hall, and chapel. One group of pictures is labeled "Cassell's Colorado" (July 1896-August 1896). One photographic print is laid into the volume and an envelope with a brief, humorous manuscript poem is pasted in amongst the photographs.

The album's compiler may have been a member of Smith College's camera club and exchanged prints with other members.

John Klaerr Walsh papers, 1928-1958

Kalamazoo, Michigan newspaperman; papers relating to his career in journalism and to his trip to the Far East in 1940.

The Walsh papers includes scattered materials relating to his career as a newspaperman. The bulk of the collection concerns the flight of American newspapermen aboard a clipper plane to the South Pacific prior to World War II. Other materials relate to the history and operation of the Kalamazoo Gazette. Items of interest include research material concerning Dr. William E. Upjohn and the history of the Upjohn family. There is also correspondence received, 1929-1930, supporting the newspaper's editorial position regarding enforcement of the 18th Amendment. Some of the correspondents in the collection include: Caroline Bartlett Crane, Fred W. Green, Frank Murphy, Chase S. Osborn, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Arthur H. Vandenberg, and Wendell L. Willkie.


Lyman S. Parks papers, 1962-1977

Pastor of the Grand Rapids A. M. E. First Community Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan, city commissioner, acting mayor, and later mayor, 1971-1975. Mayoralty files, political materials, scrapbooks of career activities, and photographs.

The Lyman Parks collection consists mainly of files created and accumulated during the period of his mayoralty. Included are files on the many federal, state and local conferences that he attended. The correspondence files consist mainly of congratulatory letters. The best documentation of Parks' mayoralty will be found in his speech file and in the several scrapbooks from the years when he was in office. The collection also includes photographs, both portraits and photographs of public activities.

The collection has been arranged into the following series: Biographical and Personal; Correspondence; Mayoralty Files; A.M.E. Activities; Photographs; and Scrapbooks.


Robert P. Ball Papers, 1936-1998 (majority within 1943-1998)

European correspondent for Time and Fortune magazines, 1945-1985. Letters to his parents concerning in part his student life at the University of Michigan in the 1940s, his war-time experiences as a naval officer in the Pacific theatre during World War II, and his career as a journalist in Europe from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s; student writings; dispatches written for Time and Fortune; and photographs.

The Robert Ball papers are roughly divided into two subgroups according to the focus of material, personal or professional. Within this framework, the personal papers are arranged in series by type then by chronological order. The professional papers are arrayed in strict chronological order regardless of type, except for the cassette tapes which stand as a distinct series. Ball's organization of the materials in binders both necessitated and facilitated strict adherence to chronology in ordering the professional papers. The researcher should note that the division of materials into personal and professional groups can not be absolute given the dual nature of reportorial writing. Such writing is both personal and professional. Some blurring of the categories is evident, especially for the years 1948 to 1951 when Ball's nascent career did not permit rigid distinctions to be drawn in the materials.


Shaw Family (Shiawassee County, Mich.) papers, 1877-1977

Papers, 1877-1926, of William Shaw, physician in Morrice, Michigan, including diaries, notebooks, and records of patient appointments and accounts; patient books, 1884-1891, of brother, Alexander Shaw, physician in Watertown, Dakota (later South Dakota); papers, 1907-1977, of Milton Shaw, son of William and Anna Shaw, Lansing physician including correspondence, diaries, professional files, and materials relating to medical career in the military, especially letters written during World War I; and photographs.

The Shaw family papers date from 1877 to 1977 and contain materials principally relating to the medical careers of three family members. Included are 25 volumes (1892-1926) containing patient appointments and accounts of Dr. William Shaw. Among his other papers are diaries and notebooks pertaining to his early career in the schools at Motherwell, Ontario, Canada where he taught for eleven years from about 1877 to 1888. Also included in the collection are the patient books of Dr. Alexander Shaw (1854-1892). There is one folder of correspondence written by Harold Shaw, to his parents, William and Anna, during World War I while serving with the 85th Division.

The papers of Dr. Milton Shaw (1889-1977) constitute the principal part of the collection and reflect his active professional career. His papers include correspondence to his parents, William and Anna, from France during World War I as well as materials concerning the other phases of his military career including his involvement with several veterans organizations. Dr. Milton Shaw's connections with professional and service organizations were numerous and involved positions on the governing boards of the Michigan Welfare League and the Michigan Heart Association as well as the Directorships of the University of Michigan Alumni Association (1946-1949) and the Ingham County Chapter of the American Red Cross (1933).

The Shaw family papers also includes visual material such as family portraits; military related photographs; and depictions of University of Michigan student life including classroom medical activities, class portraits, reunions, a scrapbook, and photographs of unidentified women medical students.

A non-profit organization formed in 1992 by Julia T. Richie. The Foundation was created to empower children and young adults through the implementation, support, resources, and opportunities in employment, education, and enrichment. The record group includes administrative records, records pertaining to the organization's affiliates and partnerships with Detroit Metropolitan area charter and college preparatory schools, material relating to events and programs, as well as publications and photographs.

The records of The YES Foundation® document the organizational structure, affiliations, and programs of the Foundation between 1992 and 2017. The collection is comprised of administrative files, Board of Directors records, program evaluations, marketing material, year-end financial reports, grant applications, employee and volunteer meeting material, employee reference guides, materials related to various events and programs, tribute videos, student profiles, and educational course outlines and evaluations. Records include photographs and video recordings of ceremonies.
