The Alvin M. Bentley collection includes correspondence, speeches, subject files, and other materials relating to his political career and public service activities. Included are his files while serving as a member of Congress and as a delegate to Michigan's Constitutional Convention in 1961-1962, his campaign files from his race for the U.S. Senate in 1960 and his bid to be elected Congressman-at-large in 1962. Other series in the collection relate to his interest in issues of education, particularly higher education, as reflected in his service on the Citizen's Committee on Higher Education, his campaign for the State Board of Education and his tenure as a member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Of value in documenting the various phases of Bentley's career are series of diaries and journals, scrapbooks and clipping files, and photographs.

Papers include correspondence, speeches, writings, newspaper clippings, legislative and committee files, campaign materials, photographs, audiovisual materials, and other records documenting his personal life and political career.

The collection documents the personal life and political career of Carl M. Levin including his 36-year career as U.S. Senator from Michigan (1979-2015). Michigan organization formed to oppose public aid to non-public schools and students, variously known as CAP, and the Council Against Parochiaid. Minutes of meetings, correspondence, and other materials relating to their support of Proposal C in the Michigan election of 1970, and their opposition to Proposal H (the Voucher Plan) in the election of 1978.

These papers from the files of Kathryn Boucher, Executive Director of CAP, contain organizational and campaign materials in addition to newspaper clippings covering the two major state ballot proposals of the 1970's concerning public aid to non-public schools and students in the state of Michigan. The collection includes lists, bulletins, news releases, financial statements, mailings, workshop materials, papers from local coalitions, poll results and legal materials in addition to papers from the organization, United We Can, and a file containing "pro-parochiaid" materials. Also in the collection are notices and minutes of meetings for the years 1970-1972 and 1977-1978, and correspondence, 1970-1973, and 1977-1978. The 1970 correspondence record a variety of personal positions of Michigan Education Association members on the issue of parochiaid.

Unit Publications include bulletins concerning credit and non-credit courses, reports and a run of the newsletter Extension Service News, whose title later became U-M Extension. Sub-unit Publications consist of material produced by units under the control of the Extension Service. These include the Audio-Visual Education Center and the Michigan High School Forensic Association. Records of the Broadcasting Service will be found in the WUOM record group. Topical Publications contain pamphlets and brochures pertaining to conferences and institutes and various other programs sponsored or produced by the Extension Service. Papers consist of extensive correspondence and subject files from his tenure as governor, campaign material, and files relating to service at HUD and his other political activities, includes photographs, films and videotapes and sound recordings.

The papers of George Romney document the many faceted career of an automobile executive, governor of Michigan, candidate for President, cabinet officer, and activist on behalf of volunteerism. In this electronic version of the finding aid to the Romney papers, there are six subgroups of materials. These are Gubernatorial Papers covering the period of 1962 to 1969, Pre-gubernatorial Papers covering the period before taking office in 1963, Post-gubernatorial Papers covering the period after 1968, records of Romney Associates (a group established during his bid for the presidency), Visual Materials covering mainly the period up to 1969, and Sound Recordings also covering up to 1969. There is some overlapping of dates, particularly around the time when Romney was first elected governor in 1962 and the period when he joined the Nixon administration in 1969. The researcher should also note that the papers of Lenore Romney are not part of this finding aid.

The Gilbert Bursley collection consists of Legislative files, primarily from the period when he served in the Michigan State Senate. These files also include a record of the bills that Bursley introduced and his interest in the activities of various state and regional boards, commissions, and agencies. A smaller portion of the collection details some of his interests as president of Cleary College after his left the Legislature.

The Jones family papers are comprised of correspondence, photographs, genealogy material, and other family papers. The bulk of correspondence is that of Alice Van Hoosen Jones, 1876-1950. She corresponded with her sister, Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen, her parents, Sarah and Joshua Van Hoosen, among other friends and family members. The papers also include correspondence of J.C. Jones, 1860-1902; papers of Elisha Jones, 1871-1888, including correspondence related to his European travels and legal papers; and photographs of J.C. Jones, his sister, Sarah, and Alice Van Hoosen Jones.

Correspondence, reports, and newspaper clippings concerning his public career, political campaigns for state office, work in the constitutional convention, and interest in educational topics.

The Lynn M. Bartlett papers have been arranged into six series. The first three series were accumulated in his capacity as State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Education, and Assistant Secretary for Education within the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The researcher should note that although these series have been designated with the title of the office that Bartlett held, these series do not include the official files from those agencies. Records for the state office will be found in the Michigan State Archives; and records for the two federal positions held either reside within the agency itself or have been transferred to the National Archives. These three series consist of personal materials, such as speeches, personal letters (e.g., letters of congratulation, and thank yous), and other files not deemed to be part of the agency's files.

The final three series consist of Biographical/Personal, the papers of Bartlett's wife Josephine, and Collected Material.

Materials surrounding the career of Jewish American politician, women's rights advocate, and the University of Michigan alumna (1968) Maxine L. Berman who served in the Michigan House of Representatives between 1982 and 1996. The collection contains biographical information, correspondence, legislative documents, collected publications, speeches, an audio recording of an interview, and other materials on subjects such as women's health and reproductive rights, education reform, civil rights, election law, and fiscal concerns.

This collection primarily focuses on Berman's political career during her tenure with the Michigan House of Representatives from 1982 to 1996. Biographical materials include an audio interview of Berman discussing her experience as a delegate to the 1976 Democratic National Convention, materials pertaining to her book The Only Boobs in the House Are Men: A Veteran Woman Legislator Lifts the Lid on Politics Macho Style, photographs, and numerous articles highlighting her career, as well as women in politics.

The collection also includes correspondence, publications, reports, speeches, and other materials primarily focusing on civil rights, education reform, election law, fiscal concerns, and women's health and reproductive rights. Of particular note are materials pertaining to the death penalty and assisted suicide; the performance, curriculum, and operation of charter schools; legislative redistricting; voter registration and campaign finance reform; financial mismanagement at the House Fiscal Agency; the Balanced Budget Amendment; and issues surrounding women's health and reproductive rights including the legalization of abortion and related issues surrounding informed and parental consent.

Other materials in the collection touch upon issues surrounding informed consent for breast cancer treatment options, the accreditation of mammography facilities in Michigan, flag burning, and family values, including materials focusing on the Michigan Department of Social Service's (DSS) attempt to reunite incest victims with their offenders.

Papers, 1894-1980, of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters (named the Michigan Academy prior to 1921), a professional association of researchers and academicians. Include minutes, financial records, membership lists, and founding documents.

The Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Literature papers is organized into three series: Minutes of Annual Meeting and Semiannual Council Meetings, Financial Ledgers and Auditor's Reports, and Organizational Files.

The heart of the documentation of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Literature is the series of minutes of the annual meeting and the semiannual council meetings. The minutes include reports of the standing committees, Treasurer's, Auditor's, and Librarian's reports, and text of all resolutions passed. (The minutes also appear in the published Annual Reports along with the program of the Annual Meeting, the Presidential and General Address, and membership lists.) The Minutes and Reports for 1894-1905 are bound and include a history of the founding of the Michigan Academy written by F. C. Newcombe.

The financial ledgers 1904-1937 are bound. Auditor's reports prior to 1964 are filed with the minutes of the annual business meeting. After 1964, the minutes files are incomplete. Therefore, the complete run of auditor's reports, 1964-1980, are separately foldered.

Much of the correspondence in this collection was of a routine nature. Many letters were exchanged regarding physical arrangements for meetings or regarding publication deadlines. Routine correspondence was separated from the collection. The organizational files also included a quantity of routine material. Membership lists, drafts of resolutions, and other material appearing in the manuscript minutes or in the published Annual Report were also separated from the collection. Beginning in 1953 membership lists were no longer printed in the Annual Report therefore membership information after 1953 was kept with the collection.

The records of the Michigan Association of Teacher Educators have been arranged alphabetically, then chronologically. These records, 1947-1974, include minutes, correspondence, conference programs, newsletters, materials relating to the election of officers, and membership lists.

The record group, only partially processed, consists of convention books which are scrapbooks containing programs of annual conventions, charters, and miscellaneous printed materials. In addition, there are minutes of the board of managers and of the state board, treasurer's records, general scrapbooks, and published materials.

Pattengill Family papers, 1767-1963

Lansing and Ann Arbor, Michigan families; correspondence, photographs, clippings, and other family documents.

Although titled the Pattengill family papers, this accumulation is also the records of the Foster, Sharpsteen, and Woodward families. The historian of the family was undoubtedly Theodore G. Foster and his wife Margaret Foster (née Pattengill). Through these donors, the library received different family collections that have been separately cataloged, although they obviously contain inter-related materials. These other collections, also housed at the Bentley Historical Library are Theodore Foster papers (1835-1862); Henry R. Pattengill papers (1861-1939); and the Margaret Pattengill Foster papers (1903-1961).

This grouping of family materials is actually more about the Foster line of the family than Pattengill or Sharpsteen. The papers have been arranged by name of family: Foster, Pattengill, and Sharpsteen, with an additional series of various family members and miscellaneous. Within each family, the materials have been maintained as arranged by the donor into separate files for individual family members. Of particular interest are the papers of Seymour Foster who was postmaster of Lansing and active in preserving the memory of his brother Charles T. Foster who was killed during the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic named one of its veterans post in Charles T. Foster's name. Also included is a volume of transcribed correspondence of Theodore Pattengill Foster, describing his time as a soldier during World War II.

The collection is also of value for the genealogical research materials accumulated on the Foster, Pattengill, Springsteen, and Woodward families.

This is an addition to the papers of Senator Robert P. Griffin, 1957-1979, and undated (2 cubic feet in 5 boxes) from Gary Russell. The collection is organized according to the original order of the original deposit of Senator Griffin’s papers. Please see the Senator Robert P. Griffin finding aid for a detailed description of the series and their contents. Most of the materials in this addition are Correspondence Issues or Personal/Biographical Materials of Senator Griffin’s. Some of these materials are duplicated in the original deposit. The first folder in Box 1 includes administrative memos to/from Gary Russell and Senator Griffin and a brief biography of Gary Russell.

In Box 3, the Blue Books document Senator Griffin’s work on various issues, notably Civil Rights, while the Ivory Book outlines his distinguished service and leadership.

Processing Note: Two cubic feet of materials of a duplicate or peripheral nature were withdrawn from the collection during processing. Acidic materials were photocopied and the copies were retained in the collection.

Box 1-3 are .5 cubic foot letter-size boxes, Box 4 is .25 cubic foot letter-size and Box 5 is .25 cubic foot legal-size. Where topics are split between two folders, one is letter-size and the second, legal-size, is found in Box 5.

The collection documents the career of Senator Robert P. Griffin, who was a lawyer, U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator (including the role of Minority Whip), and Justice on the Michigan Supreme Court. It consists of administrative materials, correspondence, political materials; including constituent correspondence, Michigan-related, press-related, legislative-related and campaign materials; as well as personal materials. Collection contains paper materials as well as photographic, audio, video and other multi-media materials.

While processing the various series, all duplicates, generic correspondence (Exs. May I have a photograph, a job, a flag, Washington, D.C. brochures?, For the information of all senators..., To whom it concerns..., etc.) and peripheral materials used for reference only, were discarded in large numbers from almost every series. Widely available publications, such as the Congressional Record and Michigan Manuals were similarly discarded from every series. Newsletters and related materials of other major politicians were discarded since they may be found in other archives. Information of a personal nature, such as resumes, intern files, and staff files were discarded because of personal privacy issues. Generic office, staff, and visitor materials, blank forms, and stationery were discarded. These materials were discarded because they do not document how or what Griffin or his staff did or thought and they are not used by historians and researchers. Out of the original 1061 boxes (approximately an equal number of cubic feet) 407 boxes (approximately 410 cubic feet, including one portrait) were retained. Processing time took approximately one year, with additional months spent compiling and writing the finding aid, and cataloging the collection. It is not the plan of the Clarke Historical Library to convert all the older videotapes which cannot be played or viewed on VCRs to current VHS videotape. This media is very fragile due to the various chemicals in its composition, which makes it difficult or impossible to convert the information, as well as an expensive process. The Clarke Historical Library plans to concentrate on converting Griffin's 1972 campaign ads to modern VHS videotapes as this was his closest race and will presumably be of greatest interest to future researchers.

The collection is organized into twelve series: Administrative, Campaign, Correspondence‑Enclosures, Correspondence‑Issues, Legislative/Voting, Personal Series, Political, Press, Whip Office, Books, Memorabilia, and Exhibit Materials.

The collection includes items such as notes, correspondence, documents, memos, manuals, work policies, procedures, announcements, newsletters, an oral history interview with Griffin, photographs, negatives, videotapes, cassettes, reel‑to‑reel tapes, speeches, statements, remarks, news releases, brochures, press kits, briefing books, schedules, campaign memorabilia, pins, headbands, bumper stickers, testimony, finances, campaign strategies, ads, studies, questionnaires, mailings, acts, bills, research, notebooks, analysis, and personal effects (ex: vest, matchbook, guest books, cookbooks, and Christmas cards).

Additions to the collection include Abe Fortas materials (Boxes 418-421), Senate Historical Office Negatives of Senator Griffin either by himself or with various people (Boxes 422-423), and Obituaries (Box 423).

Southeast Michigan Regional Ethnic Heritage Study Center records, 1970-1976

Ethnic study program founded in part by Otto Feinstein of Wayne State University and concerned with making available and using ethnic materials in the classroom. Minutes, staff reports, and subject files; contain files relating to a survey in 1972 of ethnic radio programs, an ethnic survey of East Detroit School District residents in 1974, and materials relating to a teachers training program.

The records of the South East Michigan Regional Ethnic Heritage Study Center (1970-1976) measure three feet and are arranged alphabetically by subject or title. In addition to information about the body's goals and organization, found primarily in the minutes of the Board of Directors and the Executive Council as well as in the staff reports, there is detailed information about specific projects. Most interesting are a survey of ethnic radio programs (1972), an ethnic survey of East Detroit School District residents (1974) and manuscripts prepared for the TTT program (1972).

The Students Advocacy Center of Michigan (SAC), established in 1975 in Ann Arbor, was the only organization in Michigan, providing non-legal advocacy to students and their parents who were eligible for general and special public education programs. SAC was involved in numerous controversies involving public school policies and practices. Ruth Zweifler, founding member and director, led SAC and built a statewide presence through activism for students and parents. The record group includes administrative files and other subject files of executive director Ruth Zweifler documenting the Center's advocacy programs, its management and funding sources; includes clippings relating to the Center's support in 1979 of Ann Arbor teachers having training in Black English.

TEACH Michigan and TEACH Michigan Education Fund records, 1989-1996

Organization established in 1989 by Paul N. DeWeese and others to lobby for changes in state law and the state constitution to allow parents to choose between competing schools. The record group also contains records of the Michigan Center for Charter Schools, sister organization to TEACH Michigan, established to promote the development of charter schools in the state. The record group includes Informational materials detailing mission and goals of the TEACH Michigan organization; organizational files; topical files; correspondence; speeches and articles about school choice and the state charter school movement; and audio and video cassettes of TM presentations and appearances of Paul DeWeese on radio and television programs. Also included are the organizational records of the Michigan Center for Charter Schools.

This record group consists of two separate groupings (or subgroups) of records: the combined files of TEACH Michigan and TEACH Michigan Education Fund covering the period of 1989 to 1995, and files of the charter school support group, Michigan Center for Charter Schools covering the years 1994-1995. Both organizations operated out of the same office in Lansing and included some of the same individuals as board members. The TM/TMEF files consist in great part of papers of Dr. Paul N. DeWeese, a principal founder of the organization. The MCCS files are largely papers of executive director Barbara Barrett as well as DeWeese. Together, the record group contains correspondence, policy statements, organizational and activity files, collected materials, sound and video materials, all relating to the efforts of the two organizations first to educate and lobby for changes in the law, and second to provide assistance and support in the establishment of charter schools. The records date from the inception of the organization to 1995. The subsequent records of TEACH Michigan remain with the organization.

Wilbur J. Cohen papers, 1967-1987

Dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan, 1969-1978. Earlier served in Franklin D. Roosevelt administration where he was a key figure in establishing the Social Security program and was Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Lyndon Johnson. Records consist of Dean's files; working files, 1978, relating to his work with the Governor's Task Force on Prevention and Investigation of Abuse in State Institutions; papers relating to the Summit Conference on Inflation, 1974; and files concerning involvement with school desegregation cases in Detroit and Kalamazoo, Michigan; also photographs.

The Wilbur Cohen Papers provide documentation of his work as Dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan and with the state of Michigan Task Force on the Prevention and Investigation of Abuse in State Institutions1977-1979, as well as files on school desegregation in Detroit and Kalamazoo. The papers are organized into five series: Cohen's Task Force on the Prevention and Investigation of Abuse in State Institutions, Public School Desegregation Files, two series of Dean of the School of Education files and Photographs.

William H. McNitt papers, 1968-1976

Ann Arbor, Michigan, archivist; collected materials relating to local Democratic Party politics; student papers; and photographs.

The McNitt papers consist of materials collected relating to his interest in, and activities with, the local Democratic Party. Included are newsletters, leaflets, campaign materials and newspaper clippings concerning state, county, and municipal politics, particularly the presidential campaigns of Eugene McCarthy in 1968 and George McGovern in 1972, Ann Arbor City Council and school board elections; the New Democratic Coalition of Michigan; the Human Rights Party; the state presidential primary in 1972; Democratic state conventions; state elections in 1968, 1970, 1972, and 1974; and the election campaign of Congressman Richard F. VanderVeen in 1974.

The collection also includes copies of student papers on topics relating to Michigan history. The titles of these papers are "The Library Extension Movement in Grand Rapids", "Journalism and the Republican Party of Michigan, 1890-1920; A Study of the Michigan Republican Newspaper Association", and "Peace and American Society : Rebecca Shelley and the Peace Movement."

Finally, there are many hundreds of photographs taken by McNitt relating to the construction of the Bentley Library and to the accessioning of the papers of Gerald R. Ford.
