The collection consists of group portraits of Pi Beta Phi sorority members as well as one 1915 photograph of an initiation ceremony.

Biographical / Historical:

Rebecca Mason (Downey) White of Pueblo, Colorado, was born on February 24, 1878. She later attended the University of Michigan as a non-graduate student from circa 1900-1901 and 1902-1903, although the Alumni Association's magazine, Michigan Alumnus, often lists her as a member of the Literary class of 1904. While a student at the University of Michigan, she was a member of the Michigan Beta chapter of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. On July 28 1903, she married Alfred Holmes White (1873-1953), who founded the university's Department of Chemical Engineering. She later returned to the University of Michigan as a student and received her Bachelor of Arts in 1935. She passed away in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 19, 1955.
