The Alexander Ruthven papers consists of two series of records. The first is the papers of Ruthven as president of the University of Michigan, 1929 to 1951. The second, and smaller, series is the files maintained by Ruthven as a zoologist with the University Museum and as professor of zoology. This latter series dates largely from 1908 to 1929 but also includes collected earlier files from the 1870s.

Arthur F. Southwick was a distinguished professor in the School of Business Administration and the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. His dedication to teaching and research put him at the forefront of his specialization in health care business law and medical ethics. His papers are filled with his research in the areas of physician liability, medical information privacy, consent issues, civil rights, automation of medical records, reproductive freedom, and medical staff privileges.

The Arthur F. Southwick Papers are divided into four series: Biographical Materials, Publications, Subject Files, and Teaching Notes. The papers retain their original series groupings. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order within each series according to their original folder labels. Full text legal cases were removed from the folders as well as articles from widely available sources such as The New York Times and The Washington Post.

The papers of Carey Pratt McCord represent only a fragment of what once must have been a larger body of papers and consequently document only a small portion of his varied and active career. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Personal; Correspondence; Speeches and lectures; Writings and related; Research files; Miscellaneous; and Photographs.

The Carl E. Buck Papers, 1932-1953, consist of one foot of material relating principally to various community health administration studies he carried out as field director of the American Association of Public Health and later as professor of public health administration in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. There is one folder of biographical material at the beginning of the collection.

The community study material includes some correspondence, research materials, and the final reports of the studies. Also included in the collection is Buck's Ph.D. dissertation, "An Evaluation of Medical School Inspection in Light of Recent Developments," and an incomplete series of news releases from the Detroit Health Department, 1931-1941.

The Ella McNeil collection, although largely undated, spans the years 1923-1966, and includes course materials such as outlines, syllabi, guidelines and bibliographies. These materials are identified with specific course numbers and names wherever possible. Also included is other information regarding public health nursing that may or may not have been part of a class outline or teaching material. McNeil's article "Development in Public Health Nursing" (1942) is included in the collection. The papers are arranged in two series: Course Materials, arranged by course number; and Related/and Other Materials. The acronyms included in the course listing refer to either Public Health Practices (PHP) or Community Health Services (CHS).

The papers of Gordon Brown consist largely of research grant applications and supporting materials, research notes, and classroom materials. Included are reprints of Brown's extensive journal publications and related printed material, and reports of the 1973 Task Force on Teaching Needs in the School of Public Health. The papers are most useful for examining the state of research in polio, birth defects and viral diseases in the 1950s and 1960s and the curriculum and organization of the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
