University of Michigan radio station, founded 1948. Administrative records documenting the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan; radio scripts, transcripts of talks given by faculty, publicity, scrapbooks, and photographs; and sound recordings of radio programs produced and broadcast by WUOM, as well as recordings of various University conferences, ceremonies, etc.

The records of radio station WUOM document the development of radio broadcasting at the University of Michigan from the 1920s through the 1960s. The bulk of the material dating from the founding of the campus radio station WUOM in 1948. The records include administrative files; scripts, publicity material, course guides and other program related material; and recordings of select broadcasts. the WUOM records are organized into three subgroups: Paper Records (including visual materials), Audio Materials (sound recordings) and Printed Material. The content description and arrangement idiosyncrasies of each are presented below. Though the dates of the current accession continue only into the early 1980s, with the bulk of materials concentrated in the 1940s-1960s, WUOM is a continuing unit of the university, and future accessions are anticipated.

Graduate of the College of Engineering of the University of Michigan, later founder of Radio Construction Company, firm that erected various radio towers, notably the University of Michigan's Peach Mountain Radio Astronomy Observatory. Files relating to his construction business and to University of Michigan reunions; also collected materials relating to the history of Sturgis, Michigan.

The William P. Favorite collection contains material relating to reunions of the 1917 and 1920 graduating classes of the School of Engineering at the University of Michigan; records, 1941-1962, of Radio Construction Company, including material related to the construction of the University of Michigan's Peach Mountain Radio Astronomy Observatory; and collected material relating to the history of Favorite's home town of Sturgis, Michigan.

The Shaw collection is an assemblage of personal materials such as correspondence, essays and student notebook, and of Shaw's work as an artists including drawings, etchings, and other examples of artistic expression that he used in connection with his work with the University's Alumni Association and its publications. Records of Shaw's activities with the university will be found in the record groups for the Alumni Association and the Bureau of Alumni Relations also located at the Bentley Library. The collection has been divided into five series: Correspondence, Essays, Drawings and Etchings, Miscellaneous, and Photographs and other Visual Materials.

The Shaw pamphlet collection consists of articles and reprints about University of Michigan alumni affairs and several on oriental art.

Three scrapbooks contains correspondence, admission letters, registration documents, tickets to university events, dance cards, programs and newspaper clippings. Illustrates University of Michigan student social activities following World War II. Also includes a narrative of a November 1945 visit with Fielding H. Yost, and issues of the "Pipes of Pan" published for University of Michigan sorority women.

Photographs in two photo albums depict students and student organizations, such as Delta Delta Delta, the Football and Basketball team, and game day celebrations and events. Also features photographs of Bob Chappius, Rose Bowl 1948 and Marlene Dietrich.

Organization of Ann Arbor, Michigan alumnae of the University of Michigan, sponsors scholarships, supported a cooperative house for women students; papers include officer's and committee files, publicity and events files and photographs, and a history of the Sarah Browne Smith Group.

The records of the University of Michigan Alumnae Club of Ann Arbor Sara Browne Smith Group include minutes, reports, scrapbooks, correspondence, and other materials relating to group activities.

1977 and 1981 Accessions. The 1977 accession includes material from 1930 to 1960, while the 1981 accession documents the period 1947-1981. The contents of these accessions are not further described in this Scope and Content Note.

1996 Accession. The records of this accession of the Sara Browne Smith Group are divided into seven series: historical information; officers' files; committees' files; miscellaneous administrative files; publicity files; events file; and photographs.

Branch County and Ann Arbor, Michigan, family. Family papers, reminiscences of Russell and Ralph R. Tinkham, and other papers relating to studies at the University of Michigan and elsewhere.

The collection includes papers relating to the Tinkham and Huxtable families of Branch County, Michigan. The bulk of the papers concerns Russell Tinkham and includes letters, 1875-1877, written while a student in Germany. Also in his papers are reminiscences of his life to 1868, and a notebook, ca. 1920's, containing drafts of letters and other writings. This notebook includes obituaries of University of Michigan class of 1872 classmates, drafts of legal documents, letters to state representatives from Ann Arbor concerning legislative issues and other matters. The reminiscences of Ralph R. Tinkham relate to his career as Chief Engineer for the U.S. Lighthouse Service and Chief of the Civil Engineering Division of the U.S. Coast Guard. His work took him to many places in the Great Lakes area, as well as Alaska, the Gulf Coast, and Hawaii. These reminiscences also concern his life as a student at the University of Michigan and his experiences during World Wars I and II.

The T. Hawley Tapping collection includes material documenting his student days at the University of Michigan and University of Iowa, the Acacia fraternity and his work as consultant to f University in the Philippine Islands and service to the University of Michigan Alumni Association. The papers are arranged into three series: Correspondence; Scrapbooks; and Photographs.

Organization concerned with the administration of fraternity and sorority publications, fund raising, and membership solicitation. Topical files, newsletters, and general correspondence.

The records consist primarily of correspondence and promotional materials for the various fraternities and sororities on the University of Michigan campus. There is also a scattering of the organization's newsletters and correspondence with alumni of the various student groups.

Bond primarily 1960-1979, but including earlier and later materials; administrative records concerning faculty matters, alumni activities, students, course offerings, conferences, and programs sponsored by the school, and the operation and construction of the school's building; records relating to special bureaus within the school, particularly the Bureau of Business Research, the Bureau of Hospital Administration, and the Bureau of Industrial Relations; miscellaneous files of Stevenson, including University of Minnesota records, speeches, and board of directors materials from Lear, Incorporated; miscellaneous personal files of Floyd Bond concerning other organizational activities; audiovisual material including photographs and negatives of faculty, conferences and meetings, buildings, and school functions; dean's files of Gilbert A.
