The Shirley Wheeler Smith papers include a combination of personal and professional materials. Much of Smith's career with the U-M is documented in the official records of the University, most notably in the records of the Secretary's Office and the papers of the presidents under whom he served (Angell, Hutchins, Burton, Little, and Ruthven). Even so, these papers contain much material relating to the business affairs of the U-M. The extensive correspondence files (with partial index) demonstrate wide influence in all phases of University operations as he corresponded with presidents, faculty, members of the board of regents, and other university personnel. Also documented in the collection is Smith's activities with the city of Ann Arbor and with other community organizations.

Erich A. Walter (1897-1977) was a faculty member at the University of Michigan for 53 years, beginning as an instructor in rhetoric in 1919 and ending as the Assistant to the President (Harlan Hatcher) and the Secretary of the University. In addition to his work at the University, Walter was a very successful editor and author, his most popular works being the Essay Annual (1933-1941) and A Pictorial History of the Great Lakes, which he co-authored with Harlan Hatcher. This collection contains Walter's University related papers, including correspondence, research and projects, essays and speeches, and photographs used in and drafts of A Pictorial History of the Great Lakes, in addition to papers related to his work as an editor on Essay Annual and Toward Today.

The collection, although defined as personal papers of Marion Burton, is in fact the correspondence files of the office of president of the University of Michigan (1920-1925). The Alexander Ruthven papers consists of two series of records. The first is the papers of Ruthven as president of the University of Michigan, 1929 to 1951. The second, and smaller, series is the files maintained by Ruthven as a zoologist with the University Museum and as professor of zoology. This latter series dates largely from 1908 to 1929 but also includes collected earlier files from the 1870s.

The records include publications from inaugurations, State of the University Addresses, letters, and event programs. The most significant records are commission findings, essays and lectures, and university reports.

The publications of the President record the public life of the University President and document communication with the campus community and public about the concerns of the university in response to current events and pressures. The records span the years 1909 to the present, with the bulk of the collection covering the years 1985-2000.

The material includes publications from inaugurations, State of the University Addresses, letters, and event programs. The most significant publications are commission findings, essays and lectures, and university reports. These records document university investigations and responses to concerns such as women's issues and future university expansion. These publications also contain materials relating to bestowing honorary degrees, financial reports, and speeches to community organizations. Also included are some hard copy print-out examples of presidential email announcements. Some publications (or their successors) may no longer be available in print but are available on the school s website.

Measuring 227 linear feet, 1 oversize folder, 51 oversize volumes, and 283 GB (online), the records of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer document the fiscal history of the university beginning from 1909. At least since the 1950s, the vice president has taken responsibility for the creation of university policy in areas requiring special fiscal knowledge as well as for the preparation of the university's general fund and trust budgets. Other activities, such as policing actual expenditures or the day to day operations of specific service units within the university reporting to the vice president, have been delegated to subordinate offices.

Reflecting this division of responsibility, the records of the vice president document major fiscal issues facing the university and the preparation of the university's annual budgets. Some of the records are office files. However, the office also retained many key bound financial documents including an official set of the university's annual budgets.

The records are organized into six series: Central Topical Files; Supplemental Files; Assistant to the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Associate Vice President for Finance; University Budgets, Accounts and Reports; and Photographs. Most series are further divided into several subseries, reflecting different accessions. There is considerable overlap in date span of the topical files of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Files created by one Vice President were sometimes retained for use by his successor(s) and transferred at a much later date than the bulk of his records.

The Assistant to the President records contain file related to university commencements (1930-1965), honors convocations (1922-1966), the sesquicentennial celebration of the founding of the university in 1817, university fellowships, gifts, and prizes; correspondence and biographical sketches related honorary degree recipients, and State of the University Addresses. Also included are minutes of the meetings of the university's executive officers (1968-1982), dean's conferences (1951-1985), presidents' conferences (1965-1968), and topical files generated by the office (1933-1980). These records were generated during the tenures of Frank Robbins, 1921-1953; Erich Walter, 1953-1966; Herbert Hildebrand, 1966-1970; Richard Kennedy, 1970-1974; and William Cash, 1970-1983.
