Henry Phillip Tappan was the first president of the University of Michigan and married Julia Tappan, of the New York Livingston family, in 1828. Together they had five children. The collection contains photographs of members of the Tappan family including Henry Philip Tappan, Julia Tappan, Franz Brünnow, and Rebecca Lloyd Tappan Brünnow.

Julia Livingston Tappan was a part of the Livingston family of New York, who would go on to marry University of Michigan President, James B. Tappan. Includes souvenir book presented to Julia with signatures of members of the University of Michigan class of 1858 along with notes about their relationship with President Tappan.
