Alan Abrams is a Detroit-based press agent/public relations consultant in the music business; publicist for Motown Record Corporation, 1964-1966, later with Stax Records, 1967-1968. The collection consists of press releases, clippings, publicity material, scrapbooks containing press coverage of the recording artists that he represented, including the Supremes, photographs, and his writings about Motown, Otis Redding, and Florence Ballard.

The Al Abrams collection contains scrapbooks, correspondence, press releases, photographs, and memoirs detailing Abrams' work as a publicist and press agent for Detroit's Motown and for Stax Records in Memphis. The collection is valuable for its documentation of Motown in the period of the early to mid-1960s when this Detroit company was beginning its great string of record successes. Abrams was a great collector of press and other materials about the artists who worked for Motown and Stax-Volt.

The Abrams collection measures two linear feet and four oversize volumes whose contents have been foldered. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Motown Record Company, Stax Record Company, Al Abrams Associates, Miscellaneous, Visual Materials, and Scrapbooks.

Included in the collection are photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, including personal thank you notes for her participation and donations to the Republican Party and candidates, tickets, and significantly, political pins, most of which are 1968 Kleenex Company reproductions of pre-1960s pins. Non-reproduction pins cover 1960s forward. There is also one sleeve in one folder of Democratic Party pins including notable presidents. Two miscellaneous items include a pendant of President Nixon’s face on a rusty chain, and a President G. W. Bush key chain. There is also an oversized award for Bush from Governor William G. Milliken appointing her as a member of the Bay County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, 1975. There is one folder about Swallow, which includes Letter, Photograph, and Newspaper Clippings (copies), 1969, undated. The first folder in Box 1 includes material crated by or about Arlene Bush, including Awards, Poem, Newsletter, Letter, and [her] Resume, 1964, 1976, undated. The collection is organized The collection is organized by size, then alphabetically.. Overall, except for the rusty chain, the collection is in good condition.

Processing Note: During processing, approximately 1 cubic foot of materials was removed from the collection and returned to the donor as per her request. Returned materials include: newspaper clippings (which were copied), duplicates, national publications, nationally produced and distributed photographs, bumper stickers, and pins. Two Michigan Republican tee shirts were also transferred to the CMU Museum of Cultural and Natural History.

The Elly McMillan Peterson papers document the career of a Republican party activist and official, an advocate of the Equal Rights Amendment, and candidate for the U.S. Senate. Polling materials prepared for various Republican campaigns, notably the gubernatorial campaigns of George Romney in 1962 and 1966, Romney's campaign for president, 1967-1968, and the gubernatorial campaign of William Milliken, 1970; and polls conducted on state issues including detailed demographic information on the views of ethnic, religious, and racial minorities; also survey done for Senator Robert Griffin in 1971, and on attitude of state voters towards abortion in 1972. A small collection of material donated in 2013 is related to George Romney's son and the 2012 Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.

The papers of Walter De Vries reflect primarily his work for Romney and Milliken from 1962 until 1970. The papers are divided into two series, De Vries office files and polling data.
