The collection consists of 1,300 scans of images and 4 CDs of nineteenth century photographs, photograph albums, and negatives books from the City of Petoskey, which were scanned in 2013.

The collection includes approximately 1,300 scans of images and 4 CDs of scanned nineteenth century photographs, photograph albums, and negative books from the City of Petoskey area. Images in the collection include mostly Petoskey (Mich.) clubs, bay front, winter sports, Bear River, city hall, and people.

An inventory of the images is found in the first folder of Box 1, and the scans are housed in Boxes 1-2. Images were scanned both at 600 and 72 dpi. Box 3 of the collection contains digital CD-ROMs containing digital scans of the original negatives. The collection was loaned temporarily to the Clarke Historical Library so it could be scanned for preservation purposes in 2013. The collection came from several people, not just one department of the city. The original collection was returned to City Hall in Petoskey. For further information, see the inventory in Box 1.

A backup copy of all the scans and CDs is in a separate location in the stacks.

The collection was kept in its original order during processing. The collection contains only scans of original photographs, while the City of Petoskey maintains the originals. All digital CDs contained in the collection are housed in CD cases, stored in folders.

The Civil War Ambulance Corps records and Graham family accounts are housed in a single bound volume. Forty pages of reports concern the actions of the Union ambulance corps from 1863-1865, and 41 pages of household accounts (1870-1884) pertain to the Graham family.

The ambulance corps records (pages 1-41) consist of copied correspondence addressed to various chiefs of ambulance operations. Numerous ambulance corps commanders wrote about their activities along the front, sometimes including statistics, for battles such as Gettysburg (August 28, 1863), Wapping Heights [Manassas Gap] (September 2, 1863), and the Wilderness (July 1864). The records cover a variety of divisions of the Army of the Potomac, and several of the later reports originated from John R. Pancoast of the 110th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. The final item in this series is dated April 22, 1865, and mentions several skirmishes during the last stages of the war.

The second part of the volume contains financial records tracking the household and private expenditures of the Graham family (pp. 43-84). Total household expenditure for this family totaled $2,018.94 in 1871, including expenses for food, fabrics, and other goods. Family members whose specific expenses were recorded include: J. J. Graham, Jane P. Graham, Anna M. Graham, George H. Graham, Carrie Bell Graham, and Rose Clarke.

The Civil War Battlefields photograph album contains pictures of broken wooded landscapes and military cemeteries.

The Civil War Battlefields photograph album (17cm x 29cm) contains 34 pictures of broken wooded landscapes, Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, and views of a river, likely the Potomac. Each numbered print is mounted in a 11.5cm x 16.5 cm window, framed by a thin gold border with decorations at the corners. Most images are views of wooded landscapes, many showing evidence of possible military activity and earthworks, taken in unidentified flat and hilly regions. Streams, small wooden buildings, and fences are sometimes visible. The album begins with a camping scene, presumably a self-portrait of the album's unidentified compiler in the field. Another view shows a group of three posed on a house's porch. Two photographs show a three-story domed public building, adjacent to what appears to be a war monument. Four pictures show Arlington National Cemetery, one including a plaque with lines from Theodore O'Hara's poem "Bivouac of the Dead." Of particular note is a group portrait of seven African American schoolchildren with their young teacher, taken inside a crude schoolhouse; the following picture shows the exterior of two wooden buildings, possibly in the same unknown location.

Clair Brubaker, possibly in or near Cripple Creek, Colorado, made these handwritten newspapers "devoted chiefly to society, fashions & personals" sometime around 1917. They consist of newspaper clippings, pen-and-ink drawings, and manuscript annotations and "editorials" (letters) written to Brubaker's sister.

Brubaker's editorials often include family news and commentary. Other content includes news on social balls and dances, the Cripple Creek Junior High School prom, minstrel performances, weather, social and local news, jokes, and school news. Some references to World War 1 are present.

Volume 1 is identified as the 2nd edition of "The Victor Gazette." Clair's letter to his sister includes the line, "What in the world did you do with your warts? I have two horrible ones and I would like to remove them." The Eastern Star Dance given by the Gold Nugget Chapter no. 30 features heavily in both handwritten notes and article clippings. Other news includes "Lyric Opera House Destroyed by Fire," with an accompanying drawing of two dancers, implying it was the heat of their feet while dancing that caused the blaze. One example of a joke is, "Mary (four) who had never seen a cat before found one purring by her grandmother's range. 'Grandma,' she cried, 'come here quick! It's boiling!'"

Volume 2, identified as the 3rd edition of the "Gazette," includes more about the class of 1917 and their social debuts. An article titled "Pretty Girls in Stunning Gowns was feature of Junior High School Prom [at Cripple Creek]" includes brief summaries of the gowns that some girls wore. An editorial column on page five was compiled by "editor-in-chief Shakespearibus" [presumably Clair]. Page nine includes a small clipping with the summary, "The Cripple Creek Woman's Club held its annual election of officers somewhere in the city sometime last week. If you want to know just where, and when and who was elected ask 'em, we're not giving away any of their secrets." Volume two also features an advertisements section.

Volume 3, the 5th edition of the "Gazette," is identified as "The Gossip Number" because of an apparent lack of news and is described by Clair as the dullest paper yet. This volume contains more newspaper clippings, such as "'Moonshiners' Outfit Found in the Hills Near Victor," "Presbyterians Vote to Forbid Women Preachers," and "Two Girl Students Tie for Honors at Victor High School." Jokes include, "'Are you in pain, my little man?' asked the kind old gentleman. 'No,' answered the boy; 'the pain's in me.'"

Bowers, a student, annotated passages and made notes in the volume in the 1920s. The book is essentially a series of extracts from J. H. Kellogg's Outlines of Practical Hydrotherapy..., focusing on specific methods, directions, and measurements used by nurses at the Battle Creek Sanitarium.

The Clarence E. Burt papers primarily consist of letters that Burt wrote to his aunt and uncle, Addie and Charles H. Mosher of New Bedford, Massachusetts, while serving with the United States Army in France during the World War I. Burt described the scenery and aspects of life near the front lines.

The Clarence E. Burt papers contain 18 letters and postcards and 2 ephemera items pertaining to Burt's service in the United States Army during World War I. He wrote to his aunt and uncle, Addie and Charles H. Mosher of New Bedford, Massachusetts, about his experiences in France in 1918.

The Correspondence series comprises the bulk of the collection. Burt's letters and postcards pertain to his military service between June 1918 and December 1918. He discussed his voyage to France, expressed his love for Paris, and recorded his impressions of local towns, which were almost devoid of able-bodied men of fighting age. In August 1918, Burt spent roughly two weeks in a hospital devoted to bone and joint injuries after spraining his ankle in a shell hole. After returning to his surgical work on the front lines, he described conditions in his dugout, which had been taken from the Germans only days before: rats and lice kept him company in the "underworld cage" and he watched as men marched past him "to certain death" (October 20, 1918). Burt also reported the constant bombardment and seeing French villages destroyed by war. Pleased by Germany's capitulation, he hoped the peace terms would "wipe Germany off the map," and mentioned German atrocities and rotting horse carcasses (November 24, 1918). Despite his negative experiences, his letter of November 24, 1918, reveals his satisfaction with his ability to "do my share" by lessening the pain of injured soldiers.

The Ephemera series contains a printed program for a Thanksgiving Day Matinée for wounded soldiers, presented by the Red Cross (November 28, 1918), and an undated French pamphlet advertising Monte Carlo (undated).

Papers include family genealogical materials, Tuma's biographical materials, awards and certificates, photographs, DVDs and a cassette tape of anniversary and reunion celebrations, large framed photographs, and other materials documenting the Embers Restaurants in Mount Pleasant and Traverse City, Michigan..

The Clarence Tuma Papers consist of the Tuma family genealogy, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, speeches, recipes, menus, bank statements and awards and certificates. The topically grouped material is arranged alphabetically. Newspaper clippings,1960 – 2007, include information on Tuma’s World War II Service, The Embers, and the Rashid Family. Photographs consist of Tuma’s service in World War II, family, The Embers, and Rashid Family Reunions. A special note is to be given to three photographs in the collection of a funeral of an unidentified individual. Also included are awards and certificates, 1964-2007, and plaques comprising of the Trustee Appreciation Award, the Salut Au Restaurateur Award, and the Alumni Recognition Award. Oversize Folder 1 contains oversized documents such as bank statements and certificates. Oversize Folder 2 contains family photos. Oversize Folder 3 contains a photograph of the Embers Restaurant in Traverse City, Michigan. Oversize Folder 4 contains photos of the Rashid Club of America.

Electronic sources include DVDs of Clarence Tuma’s 80th Birthday, the 75th Reunion of the Rashid Club of America and the Lion’s Club Farewell to the Embers. A cassette tape is also included, which is titled “Congratulations Clarence and Janet Tuma.” A later addition includes a thank you note from Rosalynn Carter, 2015.

The collection includes glass-plate negatives and prints of Clarkston, Michigan, people and buildings.

The collection nicely documents the people and buildings of Clarkston, Michigan, from the late 19th century through the 1920s. The collection includes both glass-plate negatives and some photographic prints which were printed from glass-plate negatives which are not in the collection. The only dated images, identified in the book, are dated 1906, 1910, 1913, 1917, and 1920s. Most of the images are undated.

The glass-plate negatives are all in good condition. They should be handled with care by patrons wearing gloves. They measure 4x5, 5x7, or 6.5x 8.5 inches. They have been divided by size and then by topic. Topics include Portraits of Groups, Children, Couples, Men, and Women; Houses; Photographers; Public Buildings; Schools; and Miscellaneous (funeral flowers, a collage of images, etc.). One glass-plate negative portrait of a photograph of a man in a mat includes “Grayling, Imperial Art Studio” on the mat.

The photographic prints made from glass-plate negatives are also in good condition. They measure 5x4 or 8x10 inches. They are divided into the same topics and include another topic, People with Horses. The prints are fine quality for the most part, showing great details. At least one of the prints was made from a partially broken plate with missing pieces (see Photographs, 8x10, Men Portraits, Undated). It is clear from the style of hair and clothing in these prints that a majority of them may date from the 1880s. None of the people are identified. It is possible that the photographic images are actually from another collection and may not be Clarkston natives. Over time it is possible that the two boxes came to be together because of size only. This, however, can not be proven at this point.

This volume contains autographs and notes that Clement Stewart collected from fellow students at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in March 1864.

The front cover bears a gold-tooled illustration of a book of "Autographs," lying on a table beside a quill pen and inkwell; both covers have additional decorative tooling.

Stewart wrote the names of those he wished to contribute on blank pages of the volume before approaching his friends for their remarks, and many commented on the number of sheets he had assigned for them. Most wrote in letter format and gave their campus addresses with their signatures. They reminisced about college, referring to Stewart's "Moral Show"; "class politics" (related to the college); social activities; the first time they met Stewart; and aspects of Stewart's character. Some offered advice. Auxenicus Mari Piña Venezuela Hildreth Dickeson's note is a pun about the military draft ("Well, may you prosper in life & also in getting out of the draft for you might catch a cold."). The majority of these friends graduated with Stewart in 1864, though some underclassmen also contributed to the album.

The collection consists primarily of Instructors Central Michigan University Semester Reports for instructors, professors, and departments, as well as some of Richtmeyer's biographical materials.

This collection consists primarily of Instructors Semester Reports, both for individual instructors and professors at Central Michigan University (CMU) and for the departments. The reports, which are dittoed forms, give the name of the instructor, term, year, and the number of A, B, C, D, and E grades given to the students in each course, as well as the total grades for each course. These numbers and grades were statistically compared to those received at other colleges and universities colleges that were accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). Professors and departments whose grades deviated from national statistics were invited to meetings with CMU President Charles L. Anspach to discuss the situation. Pres. Anspach then sent letters documenting the points and issues raised in these conversations to then Dean of Faculty Richtmeyer for further research, discussion, and evaluation. The purpose of these reports and the correspondence and discussions they generated was to guarantee that CMU would be accredited each time the NCACS evaluated it.

Richtmeyer is personally documented by his obituary, April 8, 1975 (copy) and portrait photographs (copies from the CMU Photograph Faculty files), 1966 and undated, as well as two relevant pages from the CMU Chippewa yearbooks for 1927 and 1969 (copies). Reprints of three mathematics articles he wrote are also included in this collection. A copy of the book he co-wrote with Judson Foust, Business mathematics (1959) is separately cataloged in the Clarke.
