Clara Belle Maynard was born on May 14, 1874, in Olivet, Eaton, Michigan, to parents Jasper Halbert Maynard and Mary Ann Smith. She was the second of five children. On December 18, 1895, she married Charles C. Bowers in Eaton County, Michigan. The couple had multiple children, including Maynard Bowers who died from wounds sustained in Germany during World War I. Clara Bowers trained as a nurse at the Battle Creek Sanitarium and went on to work for 25 years as a licensed embalmer. Some or all of that time was spent at the Farley Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Her husband died on January 27, 1929, in Pontiac, Michigan, and Clara married Hosea M. Face on April 18, 1931. She died on September 5, 1966, in Calvert, Maryland, and is buried in the Bedford Cemetery in Calhoun County, Michigan.
