Presbyterian clergyman, missionary to China and Japan. Diary, 1918, detailing study at Ripon College and service in the Students' Army Training Corps; files relating to foreign missionary activities, including photographs; correspondence, 1935-1986; articles and biographical material; and personal and professional miscellanea relating in part to his interest in the history of Welsh Americans in Michigan.

The papers of Rev. Henry D. Jones consist of one linear foot of materials from 1918 to 1987. The collection is arranged topically and chronologically. Each folder is also chronologically arranged. The collection is divided into seven series, including: Pastoral Career and Home Mission, Foreign Mission Activity, Later Career, Correspondence, Articles and Biography, Photographs, and Welsh in Michigan.

Pioneer in the private camping movement, founder and director of Al-Gon-Quian Boys Camp on Burt Lake in Cheboygan County, Michigan, and officer in the American Camping Association. Correspondence, articles, speeches and photographs; also Camp Al-Gon-Quian materials, including program files, reports, roster files, and published yearly programs; materials of King family, missionaries in China; and plans of Twining home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, originally designed by Albert Kahn and his associate Malcolm for Louis A. The Plumer collection has been arranged into the following series: Letters to his mother from China; Other Materials; and Photographs. The letters to his mother are bound together in seven volumes with occasional descriptive photographs. The letters describe his experiences in Nanking, Manchuria, Shanghai, and Hankow, and his vacation trip to India in 1928. Also included are typescripts of selective letters. The Photographs series consists of people, buildings, and views in China, especially in Nanking and Manchuria. There are also photos of visits to Hong Kong, India, Japan, and the Philippines.

Naturalist, professor of zoology and paleontology at the University of Michigan. Autobiography and biographical material; correspondence, diaries and travelogues, and writings concerning in part his collecting expeditions for the University Museum to South America, China, the Philippines, and other parts of the Far East; also papers reflecting his thoughts on science, religion, philosophy and evolution; and photographs.

The papers of Joseph Beal Steere consist of four feet of manuscript and visual material, one oversize volume, and one oversize folder covering the years 1861-1941. The collection is organized into seven series: Autobiography/Biography, Professional and Published Correspondence, Diaries and Travelogues, Writings, Photographs, and Correspondence with family and friends (1861-1926).

University of Michigan professor of political science, specialist in Philippine Island politics and government, vice governor of the Philippines in the 1930s; correspondence, collected Philippine materials, course materials.

As vice governor of the Philippine Islands during the 1930s, and later as advisor on Philippine affairs to General Douglas MacArthur during World War II, Joseph R. Hayden was recipient of much substantive documentation relating to the American phase of Philippine Island history. Hayden was an astute and discerning scholar of Philippine life and history, and as such used the opportunity of his frequent trips to the Far East to collect materials (official and personal) that he knew would be of value in his teaching and research, and that he also hoped would prove useful to scholars following after him. Although the Hayden papers include some non-Philippine materials, such as his University of Michigan files and those records from his service with the Michigan Naval Division during World War I, the Philippine Collection is the heart of the collection. Comprising more than 75% of the Hayden papers, the Philippine Collection is testimony to Hayden's foresight in drawing together official documents (because of the positions he held) and other records (sent to him because of his known interest in the Philippines). This collection of official reports, minutes of meetings attended, memoranda with government officials, photographs, clippings, and published materials is unique, especially because of the devastation to Philippine public records and historical documents that occurred during the war.

Editor of the Flint Journal. Correspondence and topical files concerning his newspaper career in Flint, the role of the Flint Journal in the development of the city, the General Motors sit-down strike of 1937, and the position of automobile industry to Flint; and photographs.

The Gorman papers reflect the relationship between a local newspaper and the community it served. The collection comprises two linear feet of correspondence and topical files from the period 1928 to 1958. Representing but a selection of Gorman's original files, this remnant appears to include correspondence which Gorman considered to be most important. The correspondence includes substantive material as well as letters of autograph value only.

Official communications, including orders and promotion and appointment material; biographical sketches of residents of Ifugao Subprovince; printed material; and photographs. The collection also includes "Record Historico. Del Settlement de Quiangan, Sub-Provincia Ifugao, Provincia Montafiosa" by Second Lieutenant Maximo Meimban, P.C.

The collection includes official constabulary documents, including orders and promotion and appointment material. In addition, there are biographical sketches of residents of Ifugao Subprovince and miscellaneous clippings and printed material. Spanish-language "Record Historico. Del Settlement de Quiangan, Sub-Provincia Ifugao, Provincia Montafiosa" (translated from Spanish as "Historical Record of the Quiangan Settlement, Ifugao Sub-Province, Montafiosa Province") by Lt. Maximo Meimban, describes Ifugao land and villages. Within the Photograph series will be found six albums containing photos of Philippine Constabulary and U.S. Army personnel, and other colonial officials, Philippine people of the Mountain and Nueva Vizcaya provinces including Bontoc, Igorot, and Ifugao people, headhunter ceremony, travel in China, and a visit of Dean C. Worcester to Ifugao.

Notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China, and other materials relating to his work with the War Production Board during World War II, his architectural projects and inventions; and photographs.

The Youtz papers consist of notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China. Other papers include materials relating to his work with the War Production Board during World War II, his architectural projects and inventions, and photographs. The papers are arranged into three series: Biographical/Personal; Career Materials; and Published Materials.

Battle Creek, Michigan and Washington, D.C. family including C.W. (Charles William) Post, cereal manufacturer, and anti-union activist and founder of Post City, Texas; and his daughter Marjorie Merriweather Post, executive of General Foods Co., wife of U. S. ambassador to the Soviet Union, art collector, philanthropist, socialite, and Washington D.C. hostess. C.W. Post papers, largely concern labor-management relations, unionism, the Postum Company, currency reform, advertising, and matters of food and hygiene; Marjorie Merriweather Post papers document her social activities and travel, philanthropies art collections, and the maintenance and preservation of her homes and other possessions.

The Post family collection includes papers of businessman and food processor, C. W. Post, largely relating to labor-management relations, unionism, the Post Company, currency reform, advertising, and matters of food and hygiene; and papers, photographs, and sound recordings of his daughter, Marjorie Merriweather Post, General Foods executive and philanthropist, relating to social activities and engagements, philanthropies, and the maintenance and preservation of her homes and other possessions.

The C.W. Post papers consist of manuscript items and printed works created by C.W. Post and retained by his daughter, Marjorie Merriweather Post. The papers are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Although the Ralph A. Sawyer collection includes materials relating to all phases of his career, beginning with his studies at the University of Chicago in 1918-1919, the strength of the files are for those activities outside of the University of Michigan, notably his work with the U.S. Navy laboratories, Joint Task Force One, the American Institute of Physics, and the Optical Society of America. Files dealing with his University of Michigan activities are less complete as these materials will be found with the records of those units which Sawyer headed.
