Graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, Class of 1895. Glass negatives and prints of scenes at the University of Michigan, including Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, the Engineering summer camp, football and baseball games, the track team, University buildings and campus scenes, and views of the Huron River; also views of Bay City, Michigan, and portraits of members of the LeFavour, Shearer, and McMillan families.

The David LeFavour glass negatives collection documents a variety of activities, individuals, groups, and buildings in Ann Arbor and Bay City. As a member of the class of 1895, a year which was, coincidently, the first year of formal recognition for a Department of Engineering at the University of Michigan, LeFavour participated in an annual event for engineering students. A summer camp was set up outside the University to conduct field projects. The camp was periodically relocated and in 1895 a change was made from a grove on the outskirts of Leland, Michigan, at an outlet of Carp Lake (now Lake Leelanau), to a point further up the lake near the Fountain Point Hotel.

The scenes of the camp and the engineers depict several projects undertaken by the group, their campsite and equipment, and members of the entourage, including Professor Joseph B. Davis (Geodesy and Surveying) who was in charge of the operation. LeFavour also captured his peers at play, as a print of a baseball game at nearby Sutton's Bay reveals.

As a student, David LeFavour was also a member of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity. He photographed his fraternity house, his room, an unidentified ceremony, and several group portraits of his fraternal brothers and their dates.

Although there is no indication of any personal participation by LeFavour in university athletics, he did photograph members of the university track team and local football games. Other negatives and prints detail several university buildings and more "artistic" views of the Huron River and local Ann Arbor streets.

Those negatives and prints focusing on Bay City, Michigan, provide an insight into another facet of LeFavour's life and interests. Several exterior views are present, which detail the various Shearer homes in the city as well as those of other prominent residents. Interior views of the James Shearer home (where David grew up), reflect the style of life and living conditions of a prosperous Michigan family at the turn of the century.

Many Bay City buildings, including schools, hospitals, and government structures are identified. As was done in Ann Arbor, LeFavour also photographed street views and individuals. Two favorite subjects for LeFavour were children and women. He frequently photographed young relatives and used his photographic skills to show his sister Helen in particular. Often the young lady (or ladies) were posed with bicycles.

The LeFavour negatives were randomly described and dated. Available information has been provided when possible, however. All negatives were produced between 1894 and 1895, but no dates have been attempted for undated negatives or prints. The print collection is numbered so that one can refer back to the appropriate glass negative. There are over 155 glass negatives and a corresponding number of prints.

The records of the University of Michigan Department of Recreational Sports document the administration of the program, construction and management of facilities, and the results of intramural sports competitions. The records are arranged in four sub-groups: Historical File, Administrative Records, Competition Results and Scrapbooks. The records include minutes, correspondence and reports of departmental and university-wide committees as well as the Big Ten Recreational Sports Director's Association, a topical file, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings on department activities. Printed material from the department is described in a separate finding aid.

The Donald B. Canham papers, 1968-1988, comprise five linear feet of material documenting Canham's tenure as athletic director at the University of Michigan. The papers include extensive departmental correspondence with coaches and administrative staff members, several television contract files, Big Ten Conference administrative minutes, and a variety of materials from several national athletic organizations. Of particular note in the Personal series are several interviews, newspaper feature articles, and speeches that focus upon Canham's philosophy, goals, and accomplishments as an athletic director.

Democratic member of the Ann Arbor City Council (Mich.); also member of the Ann Arbor Planning Commission, the Ann Arbor Development Authority, and the Huron River Watershed Council. The collection includes correspondence, reports, minutes, and other materials largely concerning her organizational activities.

The Eunice L. Burns collection primarily documents her activities in Ann Arbor government. The collection has been divided into five series: Ann Arbor City Council, 1962-68; Ann Arbor Planning Commission, 1968-74, University of Michigan Committee to Study Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, 1971-76; Downtown Development Authority, 1979-90; Huron River Watershed Council; and Miscellaneous.

Central administrative office responsible for financial management of the University of Michigan and fiscal policy with oversight for the general fund and trust budget. Unit has undergone several name changes: Vice President in Charge of Business and Finance (1935-1966); Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (1966-1993); Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (1993- ). Includes administrative records reflecting oversight of the university's financial assets, preparation of annual budgets, fiscal policy, investments and expenditures, and various financial issues. Documentation includes topical files, university budgets, and trust fund records. Includes files of office holders Shirley Wheeler Smith, Robert P. Briggs, Wilbur K. Pierpont, James Brinkerhoff, and Farris Womack, Chandler Matthews, Robert Kasdin, and Timothy Slottow.

Measuring 227 linear feet, 1 oversize folder, 51 oversize volumes, and 283 GB (online), the records of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer document the fiscal history of the university beginning from 1909. At least since the 1950s, the vice president has taken responsibility for the creation of university policy in areas requiring special fiscal knowledge as well as for the preparation of the university's general fund and trust budgets. Other activities, such as policing actual expenditures or the day to day operations of specific service units within the university reporting to the vice president, have been delegated to subordinate offices.

Reflecting this division of responsibility, the records of the vice president document major fiscal issues facing the university and the preparation of the university's annual budgets. Some of the records are office files. However, the office also retained many key bound financial documents including an official set of the university's annual budgets.

The records are organized into six series: Central Topical Files; Supplemental Files; Assistant to the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Associate Vice President for Finance; University Budgets, Accounts and Reports; and Photographs. Most series are further divided into several subseries, reflecting different accessions. There is considerable overlap in date span of the topical files of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Files created by one Vice President were sometimes retained for use by his successor(s) and transferred at a much later date than the bulk of his records.
