Collection includes 264 glass-plate negatives of people, some identified as living in Clare or Isabella County, Michigan, and some miscellaneous images, undated [1880-1920].

Collection of 264 glass-plate negatives measuring either 4 inches x 6 inches or 4 inches x 5 inches, mostly unidentified, and all undated [1880-1920]. Included in the collection are portraits and group images of men, women, and children, as well as some buildings, instruments, a band, camping with tents, and horses and buggies. A few identified images are Godon Ripenburg of Clare, Michigan, the Clare Bakery, two Fish family gravestones of Isabella County, Michigan, John D. Oren of Michigan, and the ferry "Manistee." The creator is unknown. There are also two positive images, one of a seated woman cut down into an oval shape on a broken glass plate. The other is a small, partial black and white print of a church and factory taken from negative #97.

Federal census for Michigan show John D. Oren (born about 1868) lived in Duplain, Clinton County, Michigan, in 1910 and in Seneca, Lenawee County, Michigan, in 1930; David Fish (born about 1833) lived in Denver Township, isabella County, Michigan, in 1900; and Gordon Ripenburg (born about 1883) lived in Clare, Michigan, from 1910 to 1918.

Charles Conn Michigan Railroad Collection Negatives includes negatives of Michigan railroads and other Michigan-related topics, as well as people, scenic views, and buildings in Michigan.

This collection, 3 cubic feet (in 3 boxes), undated, is the 2018 addition to Charles Conn’s Michigan Railroad Collection. As far as we know this material has not been digitized and therefore is not part of the Charles Conn Michigan Railroad Database. Box 1 of the collection includes negative pages with one page or more of a specific Michigan city or county with image subjects such as buildings, businesses, people, and scenic views. Box 2 is a continuation of city and county negatives, with multiple locations in each page of negatives. At the end of Box 2 begins negatives categorized by specific railways in Michigan. Lastly, Box 3 includes miscellaneous railroad negatives, logging negatives, and unidentified negatives of people and buildings. Two folders of interest are glass-plate negatives (2), undated, of a blacksmith and equipment on a flatbed car, and Railroad index, undated, which appears to index items in Conn’s other collection. The collection is organized alphabetically and by topic. It is housed mostly in the original negative sleeves provided by Conn.

Earl Clifton Beck Papers, undated

The papers include biographical materials of Beck, poems, ballads, and recordings of lumbermen songs.

His undated papers include typed copies of shanty-boy type songs, folk ballads, poems, and music that Beck collected, possibly in the 1930s, as well as two cassette recordings of his group singing lumberjack songs.

Two audiodisc recordings (ca. 1960?) of Beck talking about, singing and reciting various songs, and the three 2005 CDs made from the recordings, are also included. The recordings include a spoken introduction to each section by Beck who then sings or recites the songs. Tracks 1 and 2 are from Audiodisc #1 and Tracks 5 and 6 are from Audiodisc #2. Please note that only the CD labeled “Unprocessed Recordings of Earl C. Beck” plays in a CD player. The other two CDs apparently were used to create the playable CD.

This unofficial history collection of Central Michigan University (CMU) Global Campus includes newspaper clippings (copies), photographs, posters (copies), and a Certificate of Appreciation to CMU from Carswell Air Force Base. Newspaper clippings (copies) are mostly from the Bay City Times. Photographs include commencement of CMU graduates at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Dyersburg State Community College, 2005-2012, CMU classrooms and offices at Carswell Air Force Base, 1993, Dr. Nikkari’s EAD 564 class, 1974, and undated group photographs of unidentified people in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and in the CMU University Center. The photographs are either black and white or in color and some are taped together. The collection is in good condition and organized alphabetically and chronologically. Researchers may be interested in multiple collections in the Clarke documenting the history of the above-named CMU units.

Processing Note: Five cubic feet (tenant renovation drawings, acidic clippings) was withdrawn during processing.

Grace M. Kelly Photographs and negatives, circa 1930, 2015, and undated

Photographs, negatives, and war papers of a Catholic nurse from Adrian (Mich.) who served in World War II in Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, and Bureaun, The Philippines. Also documented are her family, friends, medical staff, a convent and nuns in Louisiana.

The original part of the collection (Boxes 1-4) is organized into two series, Negatives and Photographs and then alphabetically by topic. The images are mostly undated, but date from the 1940s through the 1960s.

The majority of this part of the collection (1.25 cubic ft.) consists of undated Negatives, mostly of Grace’s relatives. There are many images of a family with four girls playing, eating, celebrating birthdays, going to school, being baptized, preparing for First Holy Communion, with Easter baskets, on vacation, and with extended family. The family traveled overseas, as well as to camp and enjoyed speed boating and fun with a jeep, during the 1950s-1960s. A family dog is in several negatives as well as the girls’ swing set. There are a number of images of a family with two boys, probably also relatives, playing, at a summer camp, and with family members.

There are numerous negatives a nun, who was a family member, first as a novice, and later as a professed nun, by herself, but more often with other nuns or family members, most often the four girls, their parents, and probably the nun’s mother, at church, the convent, visiting shrines, and at family gatherings. A number of the photographs clearly show the address of the convent as 717 Orleans Street. She was a member of the Holy Family Convent in New Orleans (Louisiana). [This information is from an e-news article in the Clarion Herald (the) Official Catholic Newspaper of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Vol. 42, No. 14, July 2, 2003. According to the article, the convent moved to another location in 1955 after 80 years at 717. A convent, novitiate, and high school, St. Mary’s Academy, were once located at 717.]

Grace’s niece wrote to the archivist that a close family friend, Sr. Mary Matthew (a black nun) was from New Orleans. Francis’ daughter, Margaret Kelly’s sister, is also a (white) nun, Sr. Ruth Anne Kelly, an Adrian Dominican.

A priest is often in the family photographs, particularly with the family of four girls and with the nun. He may have been a family member as well.

Older negatives show the four girls’ Grandma, a boy often wearing knickers, and other senior family members wearing 1920s-1930s era clothing. Grandma apparently lived in her house, as the four girls visited her there with their parents. Grandma’s backyard, with her birdhouse and swing, with numerous large family gatherings, is featured in many negatives.

One folder of negatives shows Grace and various men in military uniforms with family members before leaving to serve in World War II. A common element in the negatives is the large pile of concrete blocks in the backyard.

Additional negatives show animals, buildings, trips, cars, and flowers, trees, etc.

The rest of the collection consists of Photographs (.5 cubic ft.). Most of the Photographs date from World War II and document Lieutenant Grace Kelly’s nursing experience and training at Fort Custer (Battle Creek, Michigan), in October 1943, in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, in 1944, and in Bureaun, the Philippines, in 1945. The barracks, housing, operating room and equipment, island natives, nurses (working, relaxing, fooling around, on ship, in trucks, hauling equipment, and sightseeing), doctors, medical corpsmen, soldiers, prisoners, patients, animals, scenic wonders, as well as vehicles are documented.

Other photographs document later family barbecues and children in August 1960, and there is one photograph of a nun (Grace’s sister?) with a little girl (Grace’s niece?), dated September 1956.

A few additional, undated photographs of crowds at a Grand Stand, and people in an arena or stadium with loud speakers complete the collection.

All of the negatives that match photographs have been filed with the appropriate photograph.

The 2015 addition, Box 5 (.5 cubic feet) to the collection is a mix of incomplete materials, mostly papers, including U.S. Army special orders and other forms regarding Kelly’s enlistment, transfers, equipment, leave, hospitalization, demobilization, and clearance forms, receipts, and an application for pension. There is also information about how to set up a hospital and what equipment and supplies are necessary for such a hospital. There are some maps of hospital camp layouts, including one that is unidentified and one of Leyte Bay. There is a newspaper article about Kelly, which probably dates from the end of the war. There is also a newspaper image with text about the Angels of Bataan, nurses who were POWs of the Japanese. Kelly was not a POW. Also of interest are some poems, clearly authored by Americans serving in the Pacific. One poem is from a newsletter. Authorship of the poems is unknown.

It is likely that most of the photographs and pamphlets were the property of at least one of her brothers as they are European in nature. Most of the photographs are unidentified and only three are dated, all 1945. The photographs are pretty general in nature and include various civilian buildings and people, soldiers, planes in formation high overhead, various boats, and tents. Several photographs are identified as images taken in England, near the Elbe, along the Rhine, and in Munich. There is one photograph of an unidentified group of nurses. Ralph Kelly, who served in Bavaria, is identified in two images. There is an interesting sequence of four images showing several men practicing a life boat drill.

One item that is definitely that of Francis P. Kelly’s is an invitation to Eisenhower’s inauguration (copy), 1953.

Processing Notes: Many of the forms and the inaugural invitation were extremely acidic and were copied. Originals were removed from the collection. Also removed from the collection were several general publications about the war.

Slides of Grove Gardens, Saginaw (Mich.), circa 1907

Collection includes 21 glass slides of the Grove Gardens of Saginaw, Michigan, circa 1907.

Beautiful, colored, homemade, glass lantern slides (21) of classical gardens in bloom in spring in the Grove district of Saginaw, Michigan. Each slide measures approximately 3 inches x 4 inches. The slides are undated, but annotation in the original listing states that the last three lantern slides were taken using the autochrome process, which was marketed to the public in 1907. The slides probably date from circa 1907. The slides are in the original numerical order. Images of the following gardens are included: Will McClelland, Mrs. Harwood Gilbert, G. H. Boyd, R. Judd, R. S. Montague, Treanor, C. L. Ring, Fred Buck, Mrs. Herman Zahnow, and Mrs. Blumbes. The slides are in excellent condition.

All of the gardens documented in the collection were very large and gorgeous, including classical architecture, fountains, and extensive grounds bordering on Lake Linton. Clearly the owners of the gardens were very wealthy Saginawians. According to Saginaw Images, at http://www.saginawimages.org (viewed February 5, 2009), Saginaw received 125 acres on September 5, 1905 from the Honorable Ezra Rust for a large park. This included property in Hoyt's Subdivision and the area known as the Middle Ground, which had previously been the site of many lumber mills. Lake Linton, also known as Rust lake or Wright's Bayou, ran behind the Grove mansions located on the west side of South Washington Avenue in Saginaw. In 1907-1908 Ojibway Island was built, swamp land was dredged, and lowlands were filled in. In 1924 Lake Linton was cut in half by Ezra Rust Drive which was constructed by a boat being sunk and covered with dirt. Additions to the park continued until 2000.

Lewis M. Ward Glass-plate negatives, circa 1905

The negatives, and some modern prints made from them, document the Lewis M. Ward family, animals, logging, nature, people, and possibly locations in Charlevoix, Michigan, New York (State), and Niagara Falls.

The negatives are in their original order and boxes, inside of larger, acid-free boxes (1-3) for support. The negatives are both very fragile and very heavy, and should be lifted and handled with care by researchers.

Box 4 contains prints made from the negatives in Boxes 1-3 in December 2000 and January 2001. The folders note from which box of negatives the prints were created. They are in order by large box number and then negative box numbers within each box. All the boxes are also numbered.

Norman E. Clarke Michigan Upper Peninsula Glass-plate Negatives Collection, circa 1870-1880

The collection includes negatives of various sizes with images of Round Island Light House, Le Cheneaux Hotel, Great Lakes ferries,people, and miscellaneous, on or near Mackinac Island, and, possibly, in Saint Ignace, Michigan.

The collection was originally inventoried as including Saint Ignace and Les Cheneaux Island, Michigan, glass plate negatives, 1870-1880. Actually, most of the images are of Mackinac Island, Great Lakes ferries, and people, some of which may be from Saint Ignace and Les Cheneaux Island. The glass plate negatives measure 5x7 inches, 8x10 inches, 6.5x8.5 inches, and 8.5x10 inches. The photographer or photographers are unidentified. Items were identified as much as possible from labels, slips of papers, notes on original boxes, and on/in the negatives themselves. Negatives with damage, such as fading, spotting, oxidation, cracks, broken or missing pieces, and deteriorated, or flaking emulsions have been noted on the sleeves. The images are duplicated in the Saint Ignace-Mackinac Photograph File in the Clarke Historical Library’s Photograph Vertical Files Collection. Boxes 3-4 are Heavy and should be lifted with care.

This collection includes photographs, negatives, and rolled photographs. A large number of the images are from Alpena, Michigan, but various people and places in Michigan are documented in the collection. Most of the images are not dated. Boxes 11-18 are an addition. An alphebtical index of the negatives in Boxes 11-18 is in the front of Box 11. Abbreviations are duplicated from original notes.

This collection includes approximately .75 cubic feet (in 2 boxes) of Michigan genealogical-related material, mostly photocopies, 1922, 2019, of Donna Hoff-Grambau.

This collection includes approximately .75 cubic feet (in 2 boxes) of Michigan genealogical-related material, mostly photocopies, 1922, 2019, of Donna Hoff-Grambau. Included in the collection are church, cemetery, school, and local information from the Michigan counties of Bay, Isabella, Midland, Missaukee and Saginaw. Also included from Bay County is an incomplete run of the Bay County Genealogical Society’s publication The Clarion, 2004-2012. Many churches and cemeteries are documented in the collection, including several Indian Cemeteries, including photographs of headstones. Information on Bay County hospitals, Michigan Board of Registration of Nurses, and a student paper of Donna’s about the history of hospitals and nursing in Isabella County are also in the collection. A few documents from the Central Michigan Normal School (later Central State Teacher’s College and Central Michigan University), and Mount Pleasant High School, Mount Pleasant, Michigan, are included. Completing the collection are some Michigan Civil War documents (copies), materials on Donna’s family, and some of her own personal notes. The collection is organized alphabetically and by county where applicable.

Processing Note: Per the donor form, the .25 cubic foot of materials withdrawn from the collection were offered to the Isabella County Historical Society. One publication was separately cataloged.

Richard "Dick" Bolton III, Michigan oil and gas images collection, 2019, 2021

The collection, 1974, 2019, undated, includes a mixture of mostly images, a news report Dick wrote about the blowout [natural gas well fire] east of I-75 near Waters, Michigan, in 1976, and biographical information on Bolton and Red Adair.

The collection, 1974, 2019, undated, includes a mixture of mostly Michigan oil and gas images that Dick photographed, mostly of or about the blowout [natural gas well fire] east of I-75 near Waters and Gaylord, Michigan, in June 1976; a news report Dick Bolton wrote about the blowout; and biographical information on Dick and Red Adair. There are eleven small slide boxes of slides and fifteen oversized photographic materials. The slides, collage, and galley prints are colored, whereas the rest of the photographs are black and white. Images include oil well workers, the Red Adair fire fighters, the blowout near Waters and Gaylord, Michigan, in 1976, the installation of oil rigs, and related views. Although all of Dick’s blowout images are dated June 7, 1976, they were actually photographed during the entire month that the fire raged. Five larger images are mounted, matted, or both. Miscellaneous slides include equipment, snow scenes, and fire in the woods. A 2021 addition to the collection is a yellow, plastic MSA safety hardhat, undated, used in 1976, with a felt and cotton lining with a plastic size adjuster. The hardhat has a red, white, blue, and black sticker of an oil well on fire with the text, Red Adair Co. Wild Well Control, Houston, Texas, Oil Well Fires-Blowouts. The hard hat measures 11 inches long, 6 inches high, and 9 inches in width.

Ernest Hemingway correspondence (copies) from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, 2019

This is an artificial collection of research copies of mostly personal correspondence from the Ernest Hemingway collection, Personal Papers, Series 2-4, at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.

This is an artificial collection of research copies from the Ernest Hemingway (EH) collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. This artificial collection is organized like the originals. Series 2 is outgoing correspondence from EH, in chronological order; Series 3 is incoming correspondence, organized alphabetically by the sender’s name, and then in chronological order; and Series 4 is Other Materials (Camping Trip, 1916 Notebook). As is typical with Hemingway correspondence, there are many nicknames and artistic descriptions. All the letters and the notebook are handwritten.

In this artificial collection there is one folder of Series 2 outgoing correspondence (copies) from EH to his parents, sister Marcelline, grandfather A.T. Hemingway, and friends Emily Goetzman, Barney Lawrey, and Grace Quinlan. The letters include news of family, friends, social, family events, and farm activities. EH notes ripe vegetables he harvested and pounds of fish including brook trout he caught and sold to Dilworth. In an April 1919 letter to Lawrey EH state that he is not going to marry. In an Aug. 1921 letter to Marcelline he begs her to come north for his wedding to Hadley.

The majority of this artificial collection is from Series 3, incoming correspondence, organized alphabetically by the sender’s name, and then in chronological order. Most of the letters are from EH’s Michigan friends, including the Dilworths and Marjorie Bump Main. There are also letters from his mother, Grace Hall Hemingway, his grandfather, A.T. Hemingway, and siblings, Ursula and Leicester (including brief notes from siblings Marcelline and Sunny), and from a variety of other friends including Jim Gamble.

His Camping Trip, 1916 notebook from Series 4 includes notes about his trip, fishing, and trip accounts.

Researchers may also be interested in other Hemingway collections and related collections in the Clarke.

The collection, 2019, 5 cubic feet (in 10 boxes), was collected by Quita V. Shier to research her subsequent book on the topic, and includes research copies of military service records of the men in Company K from the National Archives and information from online censuses and newspapers documenting the First Michigan Sharpshooter Regiment, Company K.

Shier to research her subsequent book on the topic, and includes research copies of military service records of the men in Company K from the National Archives and information from online censuses and newspapers documenting the First Michigan Sharpshooter Regiment, Company K. The military service records document enlistment, pay, invalid status, death or discharge, and/or pension records in military forms and correspondence. Only a few images are included of tombstones or portraits of soldiers in obituaries. A few tax or land records are also included. The collection documents the lives and significance of the Company K soldiers during the Civil War era. This collection is organized alphabetically by the name of the soldier’s surnames. The originals are housed in the National Archives.

Digitized letters, legal documents, notes, honors, awards, certificates, ecclesiastical notes, sermons, small publications, images, and other materials created by or about Fr. Gabriel Richard, biographical materials, and project administration materials.

In 2018, at the behest of the Archdiocese of Detroit (AD), the Clarke Historical Library digitized letters, legal documents, notes, honors, awards, certificates, ecclesiastical notes, sermons and documents, small publications, images, and other materials created by or about Fr. Gabriel Richard. During processing the paper copies printed from the combined digitized project resulted in 16 boxes (7.75 cubic feet) of materials. Original manuscripts were in the Early Church Records and Gabriel Richard Collection, 1735-1835, 4 manuscript and 2 oversized boxes, housed at the Archdiocese of Detroit (AD) Archives, and the collection of Monsignor Edward J. Hickey, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, 1767-1976, 4 cubic feet, housed at Sacred Heart Major Seminary Archives (SHMSA), Detroit. This resulting collection also includes biographical material on Richard; finding aids for both original paper collections; spreadsheets (file naming lists) which list and describe the folder contents of both original collections linked with digital file folder numbers; and paper prints created from the watermarked JPEG files which were converted to PDF files. Please note that three folders listed on the spreadsheets were not given to the Clarke for digitizing, including: SHMSA Box 2 folders 1-2 and Box 8 folder 1. Part of the agreement with the AD is that the Clarke has permission to allow researcher’s access to the digital project collection paper prints only in our reading room, not online. The collection is mostly in English, although there are numerous letters and documents in French. Hickey transcribed letters in his collection from French into English. Some of the publications are in various combinations of English, French, Latin and German. The Clarke also has many hardcopy versions of most of the publications about Richard found in this collection. There is also a list of legal terms in Latin and a letter that might be in Dutch. There are some inconsistencies due to spelling in original documents. Copyright questions should be referred to the AD.

The collection is organized alphabetically by the name of the original collection. The folder labels are AD 1-1 or 1-2, indicating the first two folders in the original AD or SHMSA collection. Further description of each folder content has been added to this box and folder listing from the original finding aids to assist researches, but is not found on this collection’s labels in the boxes. Original folder listing continues in this collection’s boxes. For example, in this collection, Box #7 includes the last AD folders originally from AD Box 2. AD 2-30 through 2-33, and the beginning of the first Hickey box SHMSA 1-1 through 1-9.

Originally oversized materials were housed out of order in oversized boxes in both AD and SHMSA. As a result of digitizing all prints now fit into legal-sized folders. For example, oversized AD-13 is in folder AD-13, not in a separate folder or box marked as oversized items.

The Early Church Records and Gabriel Richard Collection, 1735-1835, 4 manuscript and 2 oversized boxes, is housed at the Archdiocese of Detroit (AD) Archives. The collection contains some of Father Richard’s papers as well as papers of other Detroit settlers. The appointment of Frederick Rese as the first bishop of Detroit is in the collection, as are documents relating to the parishes of St. Antoine in Monroe and St. Felicity in St. Clair Shoes. The collection documents the growth and development of the Catholic Church in Detroit in the late 18th and early 19th century.

In addition, the collection includes books thought to have been printed on Richard’s press and a few items that belonged to Father Richard.

The collection is organized in five series: I.Correspondence and Legal Documents, 1782-1834; II. Financial Records, 1802-1832, This series contains materials relating to the financial and business transactions of GR (both personal and on behalf of the Church of St. Anne) as well as private citizens in the Detroit area. Included are such items as promissory notes, ledger and accounting records, receipts and bills of sale.; III. Personal Papers and Notes, undated, The series has material relating to GR’s discussions of the theories and principles of various academic subjects.; IV. Printed Materials, 1735-1831, This series contains printed materials relating to GR’s work in the community as well as Detroit history. Included are US Congressional bills with provisions regarding efforts to educate and care for deaf-mutes.

The collection of Monsignor Edward J. Hickey, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, 1767-1976, 4 cubic feet, is housed at Sacred Heart Major Seminary Archives (SHMSA), Detroit. This material was transferred to the AD in 2017 and is on deposit there from SHMSA. The collection includes: artifacts and documents related to Father Gabriel Richard and the early history of the Diocese of Detroit. The collection may only be accessed with the permission of the SHMSA Library Director. Monsignor Hickey transcribed numerous original letters of Father Richard in French, and then translated them into English. There are also texts of speeches and talks given by Monsignor Hickey on the subject of Father Richard; pamphlets and articles by others on the life of Father Richard; a list of the books in the private collection of Father Richard; paintings, photographs and prints of Father Richard and important places in his life; and other material pertaining to Monsignor Hickey and his family. The collection mostly follows the original organization by Father [Earl] Boyea. The collection was inventoried by Steve Wejroch, Archivist for the Archdiocese of Detroit, in August 2017.

This collection was generated in 2018 from a digital copy Overton had made of annuity records of Indian tribes in Michigan and part of Wisconsin, 1853-1858, which were part of a much larger body of records in the National Archives designated as Records Group (RG) 217.7.7, Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, Records of the Second Auditor, Records of the Archives Division, settled Indian accounts and claims, 1795-1894. .

This collection was researched and compiled by Overton from the much larger body of records in the National Archives designated as Records Group (RG) 217.7.7, Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, Records of the Second Auditor, Records of the Archives Division, settled Indian accounts and claims, 1795-1894. RG 217.7.7 is also available on Microfilm T135 at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. In 2018 Overton had a digital copy made of annuity records of Indian tribes in Michigan and part of Wisconsin, 1853-1858. Two paper copies were printed from digital copy for the Clarke Historical Library, a user copy which is in the Clarke's reading room for public use, and a master paper archival backup in the stacks. The collection is in its original order, mostly chronological and alphabetical. For some of the bands and tribes in this collection there are no official Library of Congress subject headings.

All the original annuity payment forms were handwritten on paper. Each annuity payment is a multi-page list, approximately 20 pages in length. Each annuity payment includes: the place and date of payment, names of each tribe, band and head of a family who received an annuity, the total number of men, women, children, and members in each family, and the total of money received by each family, tribe, and band. The head of family made an X (their mark) by their name indicating payment received and that they were illiterate. Native American names are spelled phonetically in English. At the end of each annuity payment list, the Indian Agent and other witnesses signed, including missionaries, other agents and military officers. Sometimes payment were late. Upper Peninsula tribes were usually paid during the summer, Lower Peninsula in the fall and early winter, and the more southerly tribes often had to wait until January. Before the Ottawa and Chippewa Treaty of Detroit, 1855, the Grand River Ottawas were paid under two different treaties, two separate payrolls, usually the same day and time (noted here as Part 1 and 2). The collection includes 1960s photostatic copies and English transcripts of Fr. Richard’s correspondence and other materials. There are no original Richard materials in the collection. The collection was probably copied from various archives including the Clements Library and the Library of Congress. Among the correspondents are other Catholic prelates, Francis Navarre, the Michigan Legislature, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, William Woodbridge, Alexander Fraser, and St. Anne’s Parish. The collection is arranged mostly chronologically.

Other papers (copies) include Richard’s last wills and testaments, October 1, 1806 and October 31, 1821; his inventory, 1833; a report about a fire in Detroit, 1809; petitions to the Michigan Legislature, including one promoting the education of Indians, 1809; papers about the Society of Catholic Schools in Michigan, 1815; and testimonies of court cases involving Fr. Richard, 1823.

Most of the letters and other papers were written by Fr. Richard in French. Topics cover political, religious, and educational matters and Detroit.

Information about and correspondence with Fr. Richard may also be found in the Richard digital project collection, Francis Navarre, St. Anne’s Church, and Charles J. Walker Collections in the Clarke Historical Library, as well as in numerous books. Item-level index cards are also available to assist researchers.

This collection includes postcards nostly created by children and teens in various Michigan cities which competed in the Clarke Historical Library DigMichNews Contests, 2015-2019.

This collection includes postcards created by children and teens in Alpena, Milford, and Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, from the 2015 competition 1 cubic ft. (in 2 boxes). Milford won the competition in 2015. A folder of information about the 2015 competition is in the front of box 1.

The 2016 competition postcards 6.75 cubic feet (in 14 boxes) include those created by children and teens in pre-schools, and both public and private schools in Alpena, Clinton County (supporting DeWitt Public Library), Houghton Lake, L’Anse. In addition to children’s postcards there are several folders of homemade crafty postcards created by adults in the Houghton Lake Public Library Craft Group. All of the Polish News competition postcards were homemade by adults associated with the Polish News in Detroit. Alpena won the competition in 2016. Schools were identified whenever possible. When identification was not specific minors are identified as students. A folder of information about the 2016 competition is in the front of box 3.

The 2017 competition postcards, 4.25 cubic feet (in 9 boxes), include those created by children and adults in L’Anse, Leelanau, New Baltimore, Oceana, and Utica. Three-dimensional, art, reproduced art, and composite image postcards are included. Specific schools or institutions were not identified. L’Anse won the competition in 2017 with Utica a close second. A folder of information about the 2017 competition is in the front of Box 17.

The 2018 competition postcards, 2 cubic feet (in 4 boxes), include those created by children, and a couple of adults, in Albion, Detroit, East Grand Rapids, Pontiac, Saugatuck, and Utica. Art and reproduced art postcards are included. While no specific schools were identified as contributors, Saugatuck District Library was identified as an institution were children created children’s art postcards for the competition. Saugatuck won the competition in 2018 while Utica came in second. A folder of information about the 2018 competition is in the front of Box 25.

The 2019 competition postcards, 1.5 cubic feet (in 3 boxes), include postcards mostly created by children. Postcards created, or probably created, by adults include some in the Grandville folder, including five reproduced historical photographs, and postcards in the Sparta Retirement Community and Sparta adults folder. Identified Sparta schools or school districts include: Algoma Christian Schools, Appleview Elementary, Kent City Schools, Ridgeview schools, and Sparta Middle and High schools. Sparta won the competition over Grandville. A folder of information about the 2019 competition is in the front of Box 30, and a folder about the 2020 competition is in the back of Box 32. Only a few people people identified themselves by first names in the Algoma, Kent City, Ridgeview, Sparta schools, and Sparta Retirement Community folders.

The collection is organized alphabetically by year of competition, city, then by topic. The collection is ongoing.

Processing Note: Duplicate mass-produced postcards were sorted and withdrawn from the collection. This includes approximately 4 cubic feet (2015), 1 cubic foot (2016), 1.5 cubic (2017), 1 cubic foot (2018), and 1.5 cubic feet (2019). The remaining postcards were compared to the existing Michigan postcards in the Clarke. Non-duplicates were then filed into the Michigan postcards collection. None of the children’s postcards were duplicates.

The collection consists of 1,300 scans of images and 4 CDs of nineteenth century photographs, photograph albums, and negatives books from the City of Petoskey, which were scanned in 2013.

The collection includes approximately 1,300 scans of images and 4 CDs of scanned nineteenth century photographs, photograph albums, and negative books from the City of Petoskey area. Images in the collection include mostly Petoskey (Mich.) clubs, bay front, winter sports, Bear River, city hall, and people.

An inventory of the images is found in the first folder of Box 1, and the scans are housed in Boxes 1-2. Images were scanned both at 600 and 72 dpi. Box 3 of the collection contains digital CD-ROMs containing digital scans of the original negatives. The collection was loaned temporarily to the Clarke Historical Library so it could be scanned for preservation purposes in 2013. The collection came from several people, not just one department of the city. The original collection was returned to City Hall in Petoskey. For further information, see the inventory in Box 1.

A backup copy of all the scans and CDs is in a separate location in the stacks.

The collection was kept in its original order during processing. The collection contains only scans of original photographs, while the City of Petoskey maintains the originals. All digital CDs contained in the collection are housed in CD cases, stored in folders.

The collection consists of 2,000 scans of images and 47 CDs of a miscellaneous nineteenth century photographic collection, which were scanned in 2013.

The collection includes approximately 2,000 scans of images and 47 CDs of the LTHBM miscellaneous photographic collection of glass-plate negatives, photographs and negatives, mostly nineteenth century. The collection was loaned temporarily to the Clarke Historical Library so it could be scanned for preservation purposes in 2013. Images in the collection include mostly Petoskey (Mich.) centennial, buildings, churches, hotels, the hospital, railroads, streets, numerous people, and businesses, as well as mills located along Bear River, the waterfront, boats, and steamships. Other Michigan locations documented in the collection include Alanson, Pellston, Bay View, Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Carson, Carp Lake, Charlevoix, Cross Village, Harbor Springs, Oden, Onaway, Pellston, Sturgeon Bay, and Walloon Lake, as well as Camp Daggett.

Boxes 1-7 include an inventory of images and prints of all scanned images. Images were scanned both at 600 and 72 dpi. Box 8 contains the CD-ROMS. The original collection was returned to the LTBHM. For further information see the inventory in Box 1.

There may be drafts and copies, as well as some original blueprints for each building, but the collection does not include an entire set of complete blueprints for any building. Drawings include proposed developments, sketches, site plans, mechanical and other details, floor plans, survey maps, site profiles and plans, preliminary views, alternate plans, design development plans, elevations, master development plans, foundation plans, among others. There are various types of pencil notations on blueline and trace paper drawings. Items within each folder are numbered in pencil in the lower right corner to assist patrons in retrieving specific items.

The collection includes architectural drawings of various houses and churches of Midland, Michigan, including the Church of the Nazarene, and other nearby buildings including West Midland Community Center, Northwood Institute, Crown Petroleum, Inc. gas station on US-23, the Midland County Santa Claus Workshop [house], West Midland County Parks Site Plan, Midland Hospital’s chronic care room. Blueprints for Interlochen Music Camp, Kent Intermediate Schools, Bay Refining Company Station, Central Pumping Station, DePauw University Performing Arts Center, Kalamazoo Nature Center, the Leonard Refineries, Inc. service station and sign, Stadium Boulevard Site Plan, Theater for Wayne State University, Young Subdivision curb grades, Roscommon Congregational Church, Temple Beth-El in Spring Valley, New York, lamps and decks are also included.

The collection consists of scans and CDs of postcards and photographs of the Society. The originals are housed at Harbor Spring History Museum. These are scans and CDs of the original collection, which was loaned temporarily to the Clarke for preservation copying in 2011. The scanned collection in the Clarke is organized by the Society’s accession numbers, 1990-2011. The collection, 1877, 1985, mostly undated, includes images of people, animals, and buildings, mostly in Harbor Springs, Michigan, and the surrounding area, Little Traverse Bay, Petoskey, Lapeer, Mancelona, and Albion College. Images also include lighthouses, hotels, the Indian school in Harbor Springs, churches, train station, steamers, beach and scenic scenes, and birds-eye-views. Scans are housed in Box 1 (.5 cubic foot). Box 2 (.25 cubic foot) consists of seven CDs; six CDs which are user copies of the scanned images, and one is of the inventory spreadsheet, which describes the collection in more detail.

Preservation Note: For preservation purposes, as per Clarke policy of March 25, 2011, six CDs of the scanned images and one of the inventory spreadsheet (Duplicates of Box 2) are housed in the Clarke’s vault. Researchers are not allowed access to the preservation copies stored in the vault.

Major topics documented include Camp Algonquin, now a YMCA camp in Hastings, Old Petoskey Hospital, little Traverse Hospital, winter sports and queens, portraits of many unidentified people, boats, cottages, logging, fishing, Miss Ethel Shepherd’s art classes, and a wedding at the cottage of O. This collection is not composed of President Ross' official presidential papers. It is an artificial collection collected by Archivist Marian Matyn from newspapers, reports, updates, publications and university-wide emails.

This collection is not composed of President Ross' official presidential papers. Rather, it was culled from newspapers, reports, updates, publications and university-wide emails. The collection, 2009-2018, bulk 2012-2018, includes any information about Ross, his presidency, statements he made, CMU News Announcements documenting CMU history, people, events and changes during his administration and some information which predates but affected or is relevant to his administration. Major events during his tenure included: Budget Deficit/ Cuts, 2016-2017, CMU’s 125th Anniversary, 2017; the Executive Order on Immigration, January 30, 2017 (see also the Muslim Ban March collection in the Clarke); and the racist incident on campus (see Hitler Valentine Card Statement and Information, 2017 folder). CMU opened a $95 million Biosciences Building — the largest construction project in its history, funded through state, private and university dollars in January 2017; and although the process began under Interim CMU President Kathy Wilbur, CMU opened America's 137th College of Medicine (CMED) under Dr. Ross' direction and graduated its first physicians in 2017. Other topics documented in the collection include: Academic Reorganization, 2017-2018; the expansion of CMU’s medical/health studies programs into the Center for Integrated Health Studies, April 2018; and CMU Women’s Basketball team which won both the MAC and NCAA championships, 2018.

In addition, copies of any major published reports from the Ross administration which came to the Clarke are in the CMU vertical files.

The collection includes CD recordings of book signings, which is the focus of the collection, WCMU recording and release forms, a list of Michigan authors and their writings, a written calendar of Michigan authors’ book signings, and fliers for book signings.

The collection was kept by the Clarke in a number of folders, which were titled and dated. Materials were processed by format, then in alphabetical and chronological order. Materials covered by the Michigan Authors collection include CD recordings of book signings, which is the focus of the collection, WCMU recording and release forms, a list of Michigan authors and their writings, a written calendar of Michigan authors’ book signings, and fliers for book signings.

Processing Notes: One folder of peripheral material was withdrawn from the collection. Items that were fragile or acidic were copied and their originals withdrawn from the collection.

These files, paper and digital, 2004-2015, and undated, constitute Pat’s major project files for work she did for mostly Clarke staff, and some patrons, in creating exhibits and related materials for display in the Clarke, traveling exhibits, and in on-line exhibits, exhibit booklets, numerous Clarke webpages and on-line bibliographies, and materials she and her many students digitized for CONDOR, CMU’s online digital repository. Some of the digital images are pdfs, others are tifs. Text, directions, and prints of various size of images may also be included.

The slide collection includes approximately 3,100 mostly black and white, but with some colored 35 mm slides of Michigan railroad companies, their cars, engines, tracks, wrecks, depots, workers; Michigan towns on railroad lines, and the people, organizations, events, and buildings in them; logging camps, their crews, trains, kitchens, big wheels, and river jams; ships and boats; special trains and train cars; and miscellaneous. Towns well documented in the collection include: Charlevoix, Deward, Ellsworth, Flint, Gaylord, Honor, Midland, Petoskey, and Traverse City, Michigan. Lumber companies well documented in the collection include: Stephan’s Lumber Company, Waters, Michigan, and Yuill Bros. Lumber Company, Vanderbilt (Mich.). Two negatives of an unidentified railroad depot and an inventory to the slides completes the collection.

The material is organized in original order, which includes many folders with multiple sub-folder layers within the original folder. Because material was printed, the original digital files received from Dr. Griffiths were not retained.

Commonly used abbreviations include: MTTC, LA, LAP, SWOT, ELLW, and PECC. MTTC stands for the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification. LA is Language Arts and LAP is Language Arts Program. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis and is frequently seen in the papers relating to the Language Arts Program four-year review. This collection is not composed of President Mike’s official presidential papers. Rather, it was culled mostly from newspapers, reports, updates, publications, and university-wide emails. Some correspondence and reports in the collection are courtesy of now retired Professor Wayne Osborn, who served on high level university committees with President Mike. The collection documents President Mike’s accomplishments, strategic vision, and public statements on topics such as diversity, the defeat of Proposal 2, and school massacres, rather than his thought process or implementation plans.

The collection includes Biographical Information: his obituary (copy), autobiography, and memorial service programs and video; and materials related to the chancel play derived from his book (A) Non-violent revelation to John, (copies of which are available in the CMU Libraries).

Of particular interest to CMU students will be his autobiography which documents how the increasing racial violence and numbers of murders, particularly those of Robert and President John F. Kennedy and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., affected him. He also details incidents of racism against African-Americans in Mount Pleasant and CMU and the efforts of CMU students and Father John Goodrow of St. John’s Episcopal Church to work towards positive integration and changes at CMU and in Mount Pleasant.

The collection contains copies of exhibits that Planisek created on a wide variety of subjects that are related to local history including: shipwrecks, lighthouses, Mackinaw City history, and Emmet County history. The bulk of the Boxes 1-4 is information gathered on the Enbridge Energy line 5, which carries oil under the Straits of Mackinac. The 2020 Addition, Acc#76337, Boxes 4-11 and Oversized folders #2-3, focuses on the work by Sandy Planisek and Dick Moehl planning, creating, and running the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum on the decommissioned United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Mackinaw (WLGB-83), moored in Mackinaw City.

The collection, 1998, 2017, and undated contains copies of exhibits that Planisek created between 1998 and 2017. These displays cover a wide variety of subjects that are related to local history including: shipwrecks, lighthouses, Mackinaw City history, and Emmet County history. Contents of this collection included newspaper clippings, photographs, online articles, letters and pamphlets. A folder of biographical materials is also included. A later addition includes oral histories (on CDs), 2017: a recorded presentation by Bob Sweeney, Executive Secretary of the Mackinac Bridge Authority about the Mackinac Bridge; Jim Tamlyn about the A-frame used to un/load the Chief Wawatam railroad cars in Mackinaw City, and a CD of related images; and a joint interview about how the Michigan State House really used to work, with Patricia “Pan” Godchaux, who served 1997-2002, and Pan’s campaign manager, Susie Stafford. The collection is organized alphabetically and chronologically in the order in which it came to the Clarke.

The 2020 Addition, Acc#76337, Boxes 4-11 and Oversized folders #2-3, focuses on the work by Sandy Planisek and Dick Moehl planning, creating, and running the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum on the decommissioned United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Mackinaw (WLGB-83), moored in Mackinaw City. The ship was decommissioned in 2006. There are also materials related to the later working years of the WLGB-83 before it was decommissioned, and the new USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30). On the back of many of the photographs in the collection, the names and ranks of the ship’s crew are listed. Audiovisual materials including microcassette, Hi8, MiniDV, VHS, DVDs, CDs, and photographs are found throughout the addition. Oversized materials include a signed pennant and proposed master site plans. The addition is also organized alphabetically and chronologically. All boxes in the Addition are .5 cubic foot boxes.

Researchers may be interested in related collections by Richard L. “Dick” Moehl, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, and those related to Mackinaw area history which are also in the Clarke Historical Library.

Most of the text collection was originally received on four CDs. For the convenience of researchers, we printed off all the contents of the CDs and organized the papers. For reference to the CDs, each document has been labeled in the upper right-hand corner with a number that corresponds to the disc from which it came, in order to keep some resemblance of the original order of the collection. The original CDs are filed under miscellaneous materials in the Enbridge collection. In the 2020 Addition, six items were separately cataloged and 3 cubic feet was returned to the donor as per the donor agreement.

The collection includes VHS videotapes and DVD recordings of Central Michigan University Commencement speakers and honorees, May 1998-December 2009 and 2011.

The collection includes VHS videotapes and DVD recordings of Central Michigan University Commencement speakers and honorees, May 1998-December 2009 and 2011. Some of the information written on the DVDs was incorrect. Correct dates and complete and accurately spelled names are included in the Box and Folder Listing. If a date was incorrectly written on a DVD, a slip of acid free paper with the correct date was added inside the DVD case. A number of names written on DVDs were misspelled or abbreviated. Names and dates were verified for accuracy with commencement programs. Materials lacking labels when they arrived in the Clarke Historical Library were watched to verify the contents. Seven videos are labeled as Station Archive Tape. The collection, except for some labels, are in very good condition. Recordings are organized in chronological order. For multiple commencement recording on one day, the recordings are organized thusly: All Three Speakers, 9:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 5 PM. The DVDs are accessible via ClipChamp software.

DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society Organizational Records, 1998-2008, and undated

The collection includes material documenting the site’s restoration process from DRLPs' inception until 2004, the DeTour Reef Cruise (2003-2005), the “Under the Stars” annual benefit dinner (2004-2005), DRLPS' work with Asbestos Management, 1999-2000, to clear the site before restoration, the official transfer of the site’s lease from the U.S Coast Guard to the DRLPS, financial reports and meeting minutes.

Materials covered by the DRLPS collection include the DeTour Reef Cruise (2003-2005), the “Under the Stars” annual benefit dinner (2004-2005), the group’s work with Asbestos Management, 1999-2000, to clear the site before restoration, the official transfer of the site’s lease from the U.S Coast Guard to the DRLPS, along with the group’s financial reports and meeting minutes.

The main focus of the collection is its material documenting the site’s restoration process from the group’s inception until 2004. Vital to the project was the securing of grant money, the collection including grant material from the Michigan Lighthouse Alliance for Preservation (MLAP), Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP), Clean Michigan Initiative (CMI), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as specific grants to restore the site’s fog horn, windows, and to rent a deck crane for heavy lifting.

Box 1 of the collections includes organizational materials such as bylaws and articles of incorporation.

Other materials found in the boxes include photographs, pamphlets, fliers, magazines, and banded manuals.

Also included in the collection is a set of 140 oversized drawings dating, 1975-1982, detailing the light’s features. These drawings are located in oversized folders #1 and #2. Oversized folder #3 includes oversized materials, such as plans and charts, which were pulled from the binders.

Drawings 89-98 in Oversized Folder #1 included in set as packet of legal-sized documents.

All pre-1998 materials are photocopies from various sources made in 1998.

Processing Notes: .5 cubic feet of peripheral material and approximately 45 duplicate drawings were returned to the donor per his request. Items that were fragile or acidic were copied and their originals withdrawn from the collection.

The collection, 1997-2016 (scattered), and undated, consists of materials printed in 2019 from 3 DVDs, documenting information about the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force (CAG), and material related to the PBB contamination of cattle feed by Velsicol Chemical in the 1970s in Michigan, with a focus on contamination of St. Louis. The 2020 Addition Acc#76923 includes Boxes 13-20 and one Oversized Folder, 2003-2004, 2006, 2011-2016. Most of the contents includes investigative and final reports on the ecological, water supply, and human health risks in St. Louis related to the Velsicol Superfund Site, cleanup proposals and remedial action investigation report and contracts for the same site, including one specifically for the golf course, previously the Velsicol Burn Pit. The collection, 1997-2011 (scattered), and undated, consists of materials printed in 2019 from 3 DVDs, documenting information about the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force (CAG), and material related to the PBB contamination of cattle feed by Velsicol Chemical in the 1970s in Michigan, with a focus on contamination of St. Louis. CAG materials compose the majority of the collection (5.75 cubic feet in 12 boxes). The CAG documents were either generated on a computer or scanned and retained in a computer. They include newspaper clippings, meeting agendas, memos, meeting minutes, emails, journal articles, event posters, handwritten notes, financial records, and member rosters. The PBB and Velsicol documents include newspaper articles about the contamination. Copies of a few earlier references from the 1960s are included. Also included are copies of two DVDs that contain videotaped interviews of two CAG members, Jane Keon and Melissa Strait by Comcast Newsmakers, 2008. These interviews were also accessible, as of 2019, on the CAG Facebook page. The topic is the receipt of the Carter Partnership Award by the CAG and Alma College. Melissa Strait was a member and chair of the chemistry department at Alma College. Copyright of the DVDs is unknown, likely held by Comcast Newsmakers. The collection is organized according to original order.

This is the only collection documenting the CAG and its efforts to attain federal government recognition of the contamination in the St. Louis area and fund its remediation. Until the CAGs efforts began to make national news, there was minimal effort to document the tragedy outside of those directly impacted by it. Michigan’s PBB tragedy was largely forgotten. The CAGs efforts re-energized awareness of the tragedy. As a result, Alma College, Central Michigan University, University of Michigan, and Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, faculty, staff and students began to document, collect and preserve primary source materials for future researchers, including ongoing health issues of effected people of the tragedy. Without the CAGs efforts, St. Louis would remain an undocumented major national toxic site.

The 2020 Addition Acc#76923 includes Boxes 13-20 and one Oversized Folder, 2003-2004, 2006, 2011-2016. (sometimes their name on reports is typed as Weston Solutions Inc. of Michigan). Also included is the draft chapters and list of chapters of Keon’s book Tombstone Town: Left for dead, marked with a tombstone, a toxic town fights back, 2015, which includes more detailed information than what was included in the book. The addition is organized in alphabetical order by creator name, then by title. Most of the materials were in large binders originally and were foldered retaining the order of the binder contents.

Processing Note: Two DVDs were copied that contain videotaped interviews of two CAG members, and the originals were returned to donor as per the donor’s request. One W2 found in the collection, which contained a personal social security number, was removed from the collection.

The collection consists mostly of Central Michigan University conference materials and programs related to middle level teachers, scrapbooks and photographs of Central Michigan students minoring in Middle Level Education, and Transitions Summer Camp materials of Mount Pleasant Public School students entering middle school.

Collection includes biographical materials on Bailey (1 folder), 2014; Learn today .... teach tomorrow conference (held at Central Michigan University (CMU) for pre-service teachers) programs, 2006-2014 (1 folder); and a plaque from the National Middle School Association presented to CMU, the host site for CMLA, November 1999 (1 folder). Also included are beautiful Collegiate Middle Level Association at CMU (CMLACMU) scrapbooks, 1996-2013, created by student members.

Later additions to the collection include: Photographs, matted, of CMU Graduates with a Middle Level Education Minor, 1996-2014, which were originally displayed in the hall of the unit. There are also photographs of graduates unmatted, 2015-2018. Also added were Transitions Summer Camp Materials, which include forms, agendas, plans, notes, some financial and grant information, and photographs, 2009-2013. This camp was for students entering middle school. They reviewed math, spelling, science skills, coping and confidence-building exercises, and learned how to cope with locker combination locks. CMU students led the camp for Mount Pleasant area students.

Later additions to the collection from the Dean’s Office include materials used to plan the new building, 3 CD-Roms of photographs of the construction and dedication. The collection is ongoing. A 2023 addition from the Libraries Business Services legacy files includes photographs of the interior construction and completed building exterior, and a Michigan Construction journal featuring the new building, and a questionnaire asking for construction details which were included in the article (see Box 1 Exhibits/Events Brochures folder).

This collection includes a variety of organizational materials of CMU.SGA, including meeting minutes and agendas of various committees; photographs of various topics including President George E. Ross, and notably of the commemoration events for September 11, held in 2011; posters on multiculturalism, SGA elections, and anti-rape campaign; subject files, notably on multiculturalism, Registered Student Organizations on campus (RSOs) and the Student Budget Allocation Committee (SBAC); election materials; notes from past officers; brochures; proposals; resolutions; and scrapbooks. The collection documents several initiatives of the Provost’s Office when Richard Davenport was the Provost, under President Leonard Plachta in the 1990s and under President Mike Rao in 2001. The strategic initiatives include Academic Reorganization of CMU, 1994-1997, and the development and implementation of Core Values under the Steering Committee in 2001. The Strategic Planning Committee, 2001, is also documented. The collection consists of committee agendas, meeting minutes, attachments and related materials, some reports, news releases, emails, and correspondence. The 2009 website for the office was printed off and added to the collection. Also included is a list of provosts. The collection is in excellent physical condition. Materials are filed in chronological and then alphabetical order. This is the first collection from the Provost’s office to be transferred to the Clarke documenting the history of the department.

Collection includes Isabella County, Michigan, farmstead and and barn surveys, photographs, maps, and drawings for six townships.

The collection includes farmstead and barn surveys of some of the Isabella County, Michigan, townships. The surveys were completed by volunteers between 1993 and 2017 and include colored photographs, some maps and drawings, township, section, date, address, owner’s name, common name of farm, types of buildings, their condition, notes on details, type of land plan, size, and condition of barn listing its architectural features, names or advertisements, foundation, and a sketch of the farm layout. Also included are some unidentified black and white and colored photographs.

Surveys of farmsteads and barns in Coldwater, Deerfield, Denver, Fremont, Gilmore, Nottawa, and Union townships of Isabella County, Michigan, were completed by 2000 and compose this collection. Townships that have not yet been surveyed include: Vernon, Wise, Sherman, Isabella, Broomfield, Chippewa, Rolland, Lincoln, and Coe.

Also included are three papers evaluating the assessment and related workshops and organizational history from the organization website.

The collection consists of Schock's recording business correspondence and the actual recordings, mostly of Mount Pleasant area businesses, organizations, people and schools.

This collection consists of Schock’s recording business correspondence, documenting arrangements and ideas for recorded interviews, commercials, dance recitals, and musical recordings, mostly of Mount Pleasant people, businesses, schools, and organizations, and Central Michigan University faculty and students musical productions, 1991-1997, and undated. Included are paper business correspondence, notes, drafts of scripts, as well as informational materials about the businesses and organizations (1 cubic ft.), and the master and draft cassette recordings (in 6 cassette storage boxes). The Mary McGuire School cassettes document activities school teachers and students pursued after receiving a unique state grant. Hash marks in folder descriptions indicate illegible words written on the cassettes.

The David Schock 2021 addition, 1989, 2021, and undated, consists of various videos Schock contributed to with and without the help of Central Michigan University (CMU). Box 8 contains all health-related videos with majority focusing on HIV/AIDS awareness and a few focusing on various systems of the body. Box 9 includes education-related videos, such as a series titled Problem Solving Students, a series from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education videos, and other educational resources. Boxes 10 and 11 house videos filmed in collaboration with the Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) that feature multiple public service announcements (PSAs) and Roll Call videos. Box 12 features raw footage of Schock’s documentary Road to Andersonville. Included with this are interviews for the documentary. Box 13 contains miscellaneous film that do not fit into a clear category. Some examples of this are VHS tapes about quail egg hatching, sculptures, and music.

Box 14 contains materials related to Justice Elizabeth Weaver. Schock helped write Justice Weaver’s book, a copy of which is separately cataloged in the Clarke. Also included are correspondence and interview release forms and Thelma South Schaibly’s 1994 publication of short stories to teach children morals and the meaning of life.

A few folder titles require further description, which we received from the Donor in April 2021. NGS is the abbreviation for the National Geographic Society. Schock created a video for them about geographic education with Mike Libbee of the CMU Geography Department. PDS is likely in collaboration with OHSP. The Hospice Experience documented hospice in Mount Pleasant. The Audition Crashes were stock footage of crashes for the OHSP projects, for example Life’s a Wreck, a film about physics concepts.

The addition is organized by topic, format, and chronological order.

Boxes 8-13 are each 1 cubic foot boxes and Box 14 is .5 cubic foot.

Copyright Note: Copyright is complicated for this collection. CMU holds the copyright for materials used in programs for the CMU Education Materials Center, including interviews from the early 1990s with young people infected with AIDS. The copyright for the Interfaith Ministries immigrant labor tapes, used for final appeals, is held by the Interfaith Ministries, Schock holds the copyright for the Road to Andersonville documentary material, regarding ceremonies held for Michigan Native Americans buried at Andersonville Prison in Andersonville, Georgia.

The papers consist mostly of newspaper clippings (copies), 1980s-2010, and undated as well as programmatic materials, minority equality reports, copies or original artwork, and the Center’s webpage (copies), 2011.

Photographic materials consists mostly of colored photographs as well as some negatives and contact prints, mostly documenting Center art exhibits or KCP (King / Chavez / Parks) Days or Workshops at CMU for minority students, 1993, 2008, and undated.

The VHS videos, 1987, 2006, and undated, document visiting speakers, panel discussions, soup and substance and breakfast discussions, and other events covering a wide variety of multicultural topics including Native Americans, Disabilities Act, Affirmative Action, African Americans, Ojibwa traditions, feminism, Speak, Speak Out, diversity, etc. A few are user copies of CMU media productions, CMU Minute and Editor’s Notepad. Native American topics are particularly well documented. There are also six videos covering parts 7-24 of Dealing with Diversity, 1993.

The Addition to the collection, 1981-2010, and undated, 2.75 cubic ft. (in 6 boxes) consists of the same formats and information as the original collection. Boxes 1-3 are alphabetical subject files with photographs. Boxes 4-5 are of special interest as they include correspondence, reports, and other materials relating to the Chippewa nickname used by CMU. Box 6 includes several videos and a cassette tape.

The July 2019 Addition includes Box 12 (.5 cu.ft.), 10 VHS color videotapes, 1984-1993: The Legal (Pre-Employment) Interview, 1984, an acted interview with illegal questions, copyright 1984 by CMU Office of Affirmative Action, 5 minutes 58 seconds. Newspaper Clippings(copies) directly related to cultural events that had an effect on CMU student body, faculty, or surrounding community were retained. For example: Chippewa nickname controversy, Tomahawk chop, residence hall conflicts, Kosovo POWs, Indian tuition waiver, Basketball Coach Keith Drambrot, Women’s track Coach Ellen Carpenter, Speaker Sister Souljah, Affirmative Action exemption debate, Central 6, and the Noose controversy (2007).

This collection includes six photograph albums. The contents of four of these albums were removed from poor quality three-ring binders, placed in folders and boxed, while two oversized albums were left intact. Photographs in this collection cover many multicultural events and settings such as: Get Acquainted Day, Parent Empowerment through Academics and Knowledge (PEAK), Minority awards ceremonies, cultural performances, American Council on Education (ACE), Cultural workshops, candid office moments, Spring break, Hispanic Heritage Food Taster, Zumba classes, Martin Luther King Jr. events (Unity Ball, Unity March, Peace Brunch), Organization for Black Unity events, Iron Chef, Think Fast, Black History Month events, Asian culture events, Soup and Substance, Battle of the Bands, Powwow, multicultural office, and Graduation Ceremonies. Also, included are photographs of speakers that visited CMU such as Danny Glover, B.D. Wong, Judge Joe Brown, and Jaime Escalante.

Videotapes in this collection are on VHS format. Events covered by this footage include: Battle of the Bands, Cultural Explosion, Minority Student Services Awards ceremonies, Students of Color Leadership Conference, United Holiday Celebration, and NSEMP (later known as African-American Mentoring Program).

ACE Picture Perfect Student Services compact disc includes two audio files and two PowerPoint files. The PowerPoints exhibit multiple photographs in various settings and lists members of the program with accompanying portrait.

The LibQual Survey was very important and highly positive about the services the library and library staff provided to the university community and surrounding communities.

The collection includes GLLKA’s Board of Directors’ Meeting Minutes, Lists of members, Annual and other Financial Reports; Correspondence, including general correspondence, correspondence re: the St. Helena Light Station, Books-In-Print, and various historical institutions; Subject Files, document the project grant for the oral histories, interview forms, information about persons who were interviewed, and the various publications and other endeavors of GLLKA. The 2007 addition (Boxes 10-15) is predominantly minutes, reference materials, plans, and subject Files for the National Lighthouse Museum proposal. The Clarke Historical Library purchased the books which were nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator’s and Author’s Awards. The dossiers of the nominees were included with the books. The dossiers include biographical information on nominees and some photographs, examples of their art or writing, with some translations dating from various years, marked in the Box and Folder Listing as undated for practical purposes. A folder of organizational materials about IBBY, taken from its website complete the collection. The collection is ongoing. From 2014 forward accessions includes CDs and a flashdrive. As much as possible the contents of these media storage devices is print off and added to the collection to avoid future access difficulties.

This is a nearly complete collection of oversized, matted color composite photographs of the sorority, 1983-2021.

This is a nearly complete collection of oversized, matted color composite photographs of the sorority, 1983-2021. The photographs are organized by size and chronologically. All the composites include the color portraits, names, and officer positions of the sorority members; the sorority name, Central Michigan University, the academic year, the coat of arms of the sorority with its moto, Les Souers Fideles, and the name of the photography company. The composites are in good condition, but most have sustained some edge damage and have tape around the periphery of the back side. Most of the composites are mounted on heavy board. Sizes of the composites vary in size from 24x30 to 42x53 inches. A few of the composites in the collection include photographs of sweethearts. A photograph of Emerson, a service dog, is included in 2020/21. The composites for 2015/16 and 2016/17 list a few names for women whose photographs are not included. A few composites have tape damage on the front. Years missing from the collection include: 1987/88; 1994/95; 2001/02; 2007/08; and 2013/14. Photographers are identified on every composite and include: 1983-1990/91 Fraternal Composite Service, Inc.; 1991/92-1993/94 Vantine Studios, Hamilton, NY; 1993/94-2004/05 Custom Composites, Inc.; and 2005/06-2020/21 Digital Pix and Composites, LLC. The collection is stored in oversized folders in map cabinet drawers.

Central Michigan University. Student Activity Center Project collection, 1983-2003

The collection includes correspondence, 1982-2003, and undated, concerning the planning, financing and construction of the Student Activity Center (SAC) at Central Michigan University (CMU).

This collection consists mainly of correspondence dealing with the planning, financing, and construction of the SAC. Key people involved in the process and correspondences were Jerry Scoby (Director of Business Services and Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs), Kim Ellertson (Vice President of Business and Finance), and Tim Jones (Director of Campus Recreation).

Box 1 in this collection contains documents generally focusing on the immediate planning and building of the recreation center, 1983-1990.

Phase I of the SAC Project began in 1983 and focused on proposals for and the planning of the campus’s recreation building, and the renovation of several other buildings on campus, including: remodeling the President’s house, the physical plant building, and a library addition.

There are numerous correspondences between the University and the Nuveen Co., which was chosen to be the senior manager of the projects and the financial advisor. The letters discuss different funding avenues for the projects, including the use of student bonds.

In addition, there is documentation of several other capital projects that the university was planning and funding in conjunction with the SAC. One such project was the Biomass Wood Fuel Plant and Telephone Systems Project (aka Woodchip).

Phase II of the project began in 1987 and comprised the final approval of designs and schematics of the building, and topographical surveys of the land. Most of the letters are between Anthony Paparella, the University Architect, and TMP Associates, the firm chosen for design development.

Included are a sampling of Construction Invoices, 1986-2000, that show areas of main concern in the building, as well as issues that arose during construction and additions and subtractions that were made due to budgetary limitations. There are documents discussing if a student membership fee should exist and how it should be implemented, tuition-based or as an outside fee. Also included are financial records documenting the University’s attempt to raise $25 million for the multiple projects, Bond Revenue Statistics, 1987-1989.

Box 2 contains documents pertaining to after the recreation center was opened, 1990-2003, as well as other properties that the University owned.

Letters discussing food services that should be offered in the new building are part of the collection, including the mission statement of FAST BREAK, a healthy food store. The internal audit of 1992 listed the weak points of the SAC, such as the definition of outside users and funding for equipment replacement, and offered recommended solutions.

In the ‘Budget and Finance’ folder there are letters that address the financial structure of the SAC. This was a main concern because the SAC was originally funded entirely from the General Fund, which meant that all of the money its services made would automatically go back into the University and be equally divided among other campus institutions. There was also concern that under this structure the building would continuously be in a state of financial default. In order to avoid this, administrators of the SAC wanted it to be listed as an auxiliary institution of the University.

There is also a folder of issues that the SAC faced. Issues included, how encompassing the University’s insurance was in relation to unauthorized access of children and teams granted by current employees, and illegal entry by students using fake or duplicate IDs. There is a response written by Kim Ellertson concerning an article titled, “Staff ignored threat pools of blood posed.” There was also concern over improper videoing and photographing of people working out, as well as the loss of intramural sports fields due to the new football stadium and the expanding network of new facilities related to the SAC. An unusual issue that arose was the public protest following an Anheuser Busch visit. According to the letters, Anheuser set up their tent in the SAC on the same day as the Isabella County United Way was hosting a Red Hacker carnival for children. The matter worsened because a one-day liquor license was purchased for the SAC and the famous “Bud Girls” were allowed to freely walk around the building. Employees of the SAC felt that by allowing this to happen, especially during a children’s day, the University was living up to its party college name instead of dispelling it.

This box also contains several plans to try to offset the building costs of the SAC, including: a market plan to attract more outside donors and the selling of numerous University-owned properties.

Interesting documents to note are those concerning Riverwood Golf, which document the University’s desire to purchase a golf course, and those concerning the Ann Arbor Railroad Company when the University attempted to purchase the tracks that run through campus.

The Central Michigan University’s women Softball Videotapes, 1981-2015, and undated, consist of taped recordings documenting the team. The majority of the tapes cover games played by the team, but a few tapes feature practices/scrimmages, trips, holiday events, and award ceremonies. While most tapes provide specific dates, numerous feature just the year or the opponents. These partially unidentified tapes are organized at the end of the chronological ordering for each year. Some tapes are labeled specifically for tournaments, such as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Tournament, and these are kept together. The format of the tapes are VHS, VHS-C, HI-8, and MiniDVs, with MiniDVs being the majority of the collection.

Processing Note: During processing 17 miniDVs, 4 VHS-Cs, and 1 High-8 were withdrawn as they were unlabeled, and the format is inaccessible on current CMU equipment.

Scrapbooks, constitutions, bylaws, programs, photographs, booklets and a few meeting minutes of the Central Michigan University. Residence Halls Assembly.

The collection documents some of the history of the CMU. RHA in constitutions, bylaws, programs, photographs, scrapbooks, booklets, webpages [added by the Archivist], and a few meeting minutes. The majority of the collection consists of the scrapbooks, all eighteen of which are oversized volumes of varying completion. Some of the covers and scrapbooks are particularly beautiful, creative, and well identified, including 1995-1996 (Cover of cotton flannel with cars design); 1996-1997 (Cover of bright tie-dyed material with PEACE); 1999-2000 (Cover words in pink, green, and silver sparkle paint on black scrapbook cover); 2006 (Cover of red satin cover with black RHA, 2006, and trim); and 2006-2007 (Cover of beautiful tie-dyed material with white rope and purple ribbon trim, RHA).

There are a number of organizations represented in the collection to which CMU. RHA belongs to and interacts with, including:

GLAUCURH [Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls] is a student-run organization which works to promote and improve student life at college and university campus in the region including Michigan, Ontario, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. It focuses on providing quality programming and activities for on-campus residents to improve their college experience. It was founded in 1968. The organization works with the NCCs [National Communications Coordinator]s who each represent their school. There are conferences, regional and national awards and regional directors and national officers of the organization;

MORHA [Michigan Organization of Residence Hall Association] which is the related state organization;

and, NACURH [National Association of College and University Residence Halls] which is the related national organization, which has a program of the month competition in which CMU routinely competes.

This information includes Student Opinion Surveys (SOS), examples of her publications, presentations, syllabi, and other supporting documentation, 1980-2001 (Scattered) approximately .75 cubic ft.; her Subject Files, 1981-2000 (Scattered) approximately .5 cubic ft., on a variety of Art Department, Women’s Studies, and other university topics, committees, and events; and her Vita and copies of some of her publications, 1 folder, 2007.

This is the only collection of a professor’s papers from the CMU Art Department in the Clarke. Some of the Invitations/Exhibits, 1981 are the only surviving examples of information about art shows by university art professors or students.

This is a collection of CMU SGA organizational records, 1979-2014, and undated. Among the documents featured in this collection are committee meeting minutes, budget, major topics of interest to the Student Government Association, packets of the Central Michigan University (CMU) Academic Senate and, especially, the CMU Board of Trustees packets, 2000-2010. Box 4 includes badges, certificates, plaques and a photograph (organized by size- from top to bottom of the box). Oversized materials include a scrapbook, organizational hierarchy chart, and three laminated posters. Box 5 includes photographs of unidentified CMU students and children from SIBS weekend events, 2002-2004. This event is sponsored by SGA. The posters in the oversized folder are housed separately in a map cabinet due to their size. The posters are not official published posters of CMU, but rather something SGA members must have created on their own.

Santer's papers, 1978, 2018, and undated, mostly consist of two major series, State of Michigan boundaries information and the drafts of his book, the Great Lakes Basin, 1984-1986.

Santer’s papers, 1978, 2018, and undated, mostly consist of two major series, State of Michigan boundaries information and the drafts of his book, the Great Lakes Basin, 1984-1986. Remaining materials in the collection include one folder each of: Biographical Materials, 2003, 2006, and undated; Articles and Presentations (copies), 1990, 2005; and a VHS Videotape, Monuments on the Landscape: Indication of a Changing Spirit in the Great Lakes Basin, for the Mecosta County Council for the Humanities, 1987. The collection is in good physical condition. Many of the materials are photocopies or reference materials. The collection is organized alphabetically and chronologically.

The largest series, including almost all of Santer’s correspondence, reference materials, a cookie cutter, presentation and meeting materials, Michigan Senate and House bill materials, petition, and samples concerning boundaries, borders, and maps document his ongoing, long-term efforts to convince Michigan legislators to legislatively acknowledge the current legal boundaries of Michigan, particularly on the Great Lakes, on all graphics and images. A Michigan boundaries map calendar in the collection was created by Michigan State University Geography 426 students in Spring 2005. Most of his correspondence, three folders, 1978, 2018, concerns general discussion about Great Lakes boundaries with Michigan politicians, government department personnel, organizations, and publishers. One folder of correspondence specifically concerns the boundaries of Michigan on drafts of the official Michigan quarter, 2002-2006.

His handwritten chapter drafts for his book, the Great Lakes Basin, 1984-1986, which he submitted to Michigan State University Press (MSU) in 1986, compose the next largest series. Chapter 6 drafts were not donated to the Clarke.

Research may also be interested in his collection focused on Mecosta County, Michigan, history at Ferris State University Archives.

Processing Note: 1 cubic foot of duplicates, reading materials, out-of-scope materials and acidic newspaper clippings were withdrawn during publication as well as six duplicate publications. Acidic clippings were photocopied and the copies were added to the collection. As per Santer’s request, all draft pages of his book were photocopied and the photocopies were returned to him. Five additional publications were separately cataloged. Lastly, three Big Rapids items were transferred to Ferris State University Archives.

Collection of research materials (mostly photocopies) of Dr. Charles E. Feltner. The collection’s focus is Great Lakes diving, maritime history (both American and Canadian), shipping history, and shipwrecks. Other major topics include 1905 and 1913 storms, insurance, marine casualties, merchant vessels, sailing, shipbuilding/construction, and underwater logging.

Dr. Charles E. and Jeri Baron Feltner Great Lakes Maritime History Collection, 1978, 2018 and undated, 17.5 cubic feet in 30 boxes and 3 oversized folders contains the research materials (mostly photocopies) of Dr. Charles E. Feltner. The collection’s focus is Great Lakes diving, maritime history (both American and Canadian), shipping history, and shipwrecks. Other major topics include 1905 and 1913 storms, insurance, marine casualties, merchant vessels, sailing, shipbuilding/construction, and underwater logging.

The photocopies are from numerous historical collections and/or research institutions housing the collections, almost always identified in detail by Dr. Feltner. If the source information was on or in the folder, it was retained during processing. Of particular note are copies from the Louden G. Williams collection, Historical Collections of the Great Lakes, Bowling Green State University.

The contents includes: articles, bibliographies, copies of manuscripts, correspondence, essays, geological surveys, information on diving on shipwrecks, rigging and masting, marine vessel enrollments, insurance, legislation, maritime genealogy bibliographies (American and Canadian), newspaper clippings, Old Mariners’ Church, Detroit, photographs (some of which are originals), reports, ship salvage, shipwrecks, vessel inspections, underwater archaeological surveys, underwater heritage research, U.S. Lighthouse and Life-Saving services, and Dr. Feltner’s original notes, correspondence and essays. Boats of particular interest in this collection include the Calypso, the Challenge, the Chicora, the Daniel J. Morrell (built in 1906, sank in 1966), the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Huron Brave (a fictitious ship), and the Lady Elgin. Included are also materials concerning Dick Race, Jacques Cousteau, and Peter Elias Falcon. Materials from corporate authors include Association of Canadian Lake Underwriters, Board of Lake Underwriters, Bureau of Navigation, Inland Lloyds, Institute of Marine Engineers, Lake Underwriters (this is the American underwriters), U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Lake Surveys, U.S. National Archives, and U.S. War Department Corps of Engineers. Many locations are documented in this collection. Major, but not inclusive, locations include Buffalo, NY, Chicago, IL, Cleveland, OH, Detroit, MI, Mackinaw City, MI, Milwaukee, WI, Ontario, Canada, Port Huron, MI, Presque Isle, MI, Sandusky, OH, Sault Saint Marie, MI, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and Thunder Bay.

Of particular note, rare insurance materials are included in the collection. Also of special interest are diving educator’s materials, a single slide of an artist’s drawing of the Daniel J. Morrell breaking up in 1966 (See Box 28 Wreck files…), meteorological wreck charts and shipwreck locations, ship model plans/ building, and notes on how to conduct research.

This collection is likely one of the top ten marine history research collection in the United States, complied from research collections in national and international historical institutions. Original variant spellings were retained in the box and folder listing.

The Photographs folder includes one image each of a Northern Line vessel, the Edmund Fitzgerald, and Goderion.

All items in Oversize Folder 1 measure 11x17 inches. All items in Oversized Folder 2 measure 11x15 inches. The contents of Oversize Folder 3 have varying measurements as noted in the box and folder listing.

Arrangement: Collection materials are organized by size, then alphabetically and chronologically within original order.

Cataloging Note for Marine Historians: Please note that pre-existing Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) do not match normal maritime designations, especially for ship designations ex. Chicora of 1895 (Steamship). Also, Enrollments is not an official LCSH. The Archivist provided the most descriptive finding aid and best cataloging possible for this collection, in consultation with Professor Jay Martin.

Processing Note: Duplicate copies and peripheral non-Michigan materials, both primary and secondary sources, and miscellaneous notes were withdrawn from the collection during processing, a total of 1 cubic foot. Acidic materials and poor quality photocopies were photocopied and the originals were withdrawn. All withdrawn materials and duplicates were returned to the donor as per the donor agreement, amounting to 9.5 cubic feet. 70 titles were separately cataloged. 17 items were added to the Michigan Vertical Files.

The strength of the collection is the Meeting Minutes of the Academic Senate, and its related committees and Executive Board, 1980-2000. Other materials found in the collection include: Academic Senate Chairperson Correspondence, 1980-2000; Undergraduate Curriculum Minutes, 1978-1994; School and later College Curriculum Committee Minutes, 1980-2000; Dean’s Advisory Councils Minutes, 1980-2000; Miscellaneous Minutes of the MSA Council, 1999-2005. Also included are Academic Senate Committee Documents, 1980-2000; Senate Minutes, 1983-1984. Materials are organized chronologically and then alphabetically in an order used by the Secretary of the Academic Senate. Original order was maintained. This 2009 addition is a continuation of the CMU. Academic Senate Organizational Records, 1940-2003, 23.5 cubic ft. (in 25 boxes) donated in 2002-2004. The collection contains biographical materials, awards, scrapbook, flyers, cartoons, marijuana materials, and other sorted materials of an activist for the legalization of marijuana for medical and therapeutic uses.

The collection consists mainly of information documenting marijuana and its medical uses and efforts to legalize the drug for such uses by various people and numerous organizations. Materials include: newsletters, correspondence, newspaper clippings (copies), conference papers, bills, resolutions, videotapes, etc.

The rest of the collection documents Mae, and to a lesser extent, Keith and Arnold Nutt, and their efforts to legalize marijuana for medical or therapeutic use, in scrapbooks, biographical materials, correspondence, newspaper clippings, an award, interviews and testimonies.

Processing Note: Published materials were removed from the collection and cataloged.

The collection documents their deepening friendship between themselves and their families and numerous interests they shared. Towards the end of Hepler’s life, as he became unable to read and write himself, his wife Ingrid wrote on his behalf to Jett and his wife, Shelly. Broadly, they discussed many topics in their letters. One major topic they discussed is writing. Mainly, Hepler and Whitehead discussed poetry, poets and authors, Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost (most frequently), and Shakespeare. They also discussed and critiqued their own writings and mailed each other written material that they found interesting (See July 1978 – May 1980, July 1980 – May 1981, July 1981 – May 1982, July 1982 – July 1983, August 1983 – March 1984, April – December 1984, January – June 1985, July 1985 – March 1986, January – August 1989, September – December 1989, February – May 1990, and June 1990 – June 1993, Hepler Writings, 1976, 1983 folders, and Jett Whitehead Poetry folder). Another major topic they often wrote about was their families. Throughout the collection, Hepler wrote about his children and grandchildren. When deaths in the extended families occur, condolences are sent and when someone is sick, well wishes are sent (See July 1980 – May 1981, July 1981 – May 1982, April – December 1984, January – June 1985, July 1985 – March 1986, April 1986 – November 1987, January – August 1989, September – December 1989, February – May 1990, and June 1990 – June 1993 folders). They also frequently wrote about everyday occurrences and sent each other good wishes. The relationship between the Hepler and Whitehead families strengthened over time. The Heplers sent the Whiteheads advice, encouragement, and considered them as part of their own family (See August 1978 – May 1980, July 1982 – July 1983, April – December 1984, July 1985 – March 1986, April 1986 – November 1987, September – December 1989, February – May 1990, and June 1990 – June 1993 folders). While health was discussed throughout the collection, it becomes a main topic when Hepler is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease towards the end of the collection. Ingrid informed the Whiteheads about John’s condition and carried on the correspondence for John when he could no longer read nor write. She also included her own feelings on the situation in her letters to the Whiteheads, noted that she missed the conversations she once had with her husband, and who he was before the disease as it sometimes made him abusive towards her (See June 1990 – June 1993 folder). In his letters, Hepler occasionally mentions CMU. He writes about other CMU professor like Daniel Weber (See July 1980 – May 1980 folder), Clarke Historical Library Reference Librarian and Faculty member Bill Miles (See July 1981 – May 1982 folder), and negative publicity that CMU received from the Detroit Free Press, regarding former Sigma Phi Epsilon president Paul Bonaccine, who was accused of sexually assaulting another student. The charges were reduced to attempted fourth degree criminal sexual conduct to which Bonaccine plead no contest. Sigma Phi Epsilon was stripped of its rights as a CMU Fraternity in 1984 for four years (CM Life, November 19, 1984, January 14, 1985, and See January – June 1985 and July 1985 – March 1986 folder).

The digital 1970s Theatre Reunion Folder includes: Fri open mike night, 2 hours 6 minutes, 31 seconds of open mike discussion; Sat night dinner, 52 minutes, 1 second of assorted piano and singing by reunion attendees and their memories; Sat round table 1 (2 hours, 13 minutes, 41 seconds) and 2 (5 minutes, 15 seconds) of alumni discussing their experiences at CMU and in CMU theatre; State of theatre, 51 minutes 57 seconds of discussion by Steve Berglund, CMU Theatre Director talking about what CMU theatre provides in experiences and opportunities for students; and Thrs setup, 8 minutes, 35 seconds, of background noise of people literally setting up the space, moving chairs, laughing and talking.

William B. Chaffee Photographs, 1977-1989

The collection consists of 8x10 and 12x15 inch black and white photographs of the students in Chaffee’s various physics classes, 1977-1989. Most of the photographs have paper attached to them with an outline of each student in the photograph, as well as their name. Apparently, Prof. Chaffee used the photographs to help him identify the students during class time. An occasional syllabus, test, or experiment project outlines are included with the photographs. Chaffee’s obituary, January, 22, 1991, (a copy) is also included. The photographs are organized chronologically by school terms and then by class number.

Processing Note: Duplicate photographs, negatives, and class lists or test answers with students’ names and social security numbers were removed from the collection.

Mount Pleasant Area Diversity Group (Mich.) Organizational records, 1951-2009, and undated, include mostly meeting minutes, related reports, and historical documentation of the group's activities and events to fight racism and discrimination and foster multiculturalism.

The collection consists of paper organizational records of the MPADG, 1976-2014, and undated. It collection is organized alphabetically and chronologically. Important records include Articles of Incorporation, Mission Statement, By-laws, and Tax-Exempt Status papers. There is a complete set of Meeting Minutes with agendas and related materials, 1993-2011, and a few 2012 meeting minutes, as well as meeting minutes from 1992 of the local ministerial association. Other information documenting the group includes correspondence, activities and events materials, conference materials, the group’s history, marketing plan, newspaper clippings (copies), treasurer’s reports, grant requests, and meeting minutes of MPADG Trustees, and reports, 2009-2010.

Of particular interest to researchers will be documentation of incidents in Mount Pleasant and Michigan, 1996-2005, specifically the incidents at Mount Pleasant High School and the communication and plans of actions to address them and collected materials on how Michigan police dealt with juveniles and youth, 1991-2000, undated. Related to this are two folders of materials, agendas, meetings minutes, and a Mount Pleasant High School student survey of the Mount Pleasant Parents of Color, 1993-1997. Also related is the Mount Pleasant School District Strategy 7 Committee Meeting Minutes, Related Materials [multi-cultural education] folder, 2000-2001.

There are also two reports of interest: Isabella County Human Rights Committee Report to the Isabella County Board of Commissioners, July 21, 2009, and Overview of a Project to Explore Racial/Ethnic Diversity at CMU … presented to MPADG, by Mary S. Senter, Sept. 20, 2007.

MPADG also collected Michigan non-discrimination ordinances and information on how to file complaints, 1976-2010 (Scattered).

In 2000 Central Michigan University President Mike Rao asked for the MPADG’s list of efforts for a study on diversity related activities in the Mount Pleasant community. His letter and CMU’s plan are included in the collection.

The collection includes art, drawings and prints from them, of CMU athletes and buildings, early 1990s, and CMU posters, 1975-2013, and undated. Posters include the topics of: Beaver Island, Admissions, Athletics, CMU and You Day, Programs/Speakers Series, Scholarships, School of Music, Student Services, Graduate Studies, Extended Degree Programs, Panhellenic, Leadership Institute, Minority Affairs, Study Abroad, Museum, and University Theatre. The art and posters are all in good condition. The art was generated by Church, probably Eugene Church, who in the early 1990s was CMU’s director of publications, public relations unit.

Within each folder, posters and art are organized by topic, size, and date. They are described by title, size, and date.

Materials he collected includes newspaper, magazine, and journal articles in which he is cited, thanked, and/or discussed, remarks by Governor William G. Milliken about Toxic Chemicals in Michigan, June 24, 1978 and PBB history/legislative report from Milliken administration, undated [1978], and Remarks by Lt. Governor James H. Brickley about PBB in Michigan, October 4, 1978, and reference materials about PBB. A 1986 VHS videotape of Bitter Harvest was separately cataloged. The collection is organized alphabetically and in good physical condition, with some acidification.

Processing Note: During processing social security numbers were blacked out on copies of health records and those pages were photocopied. The collection, 1974-2018 (Scattered) and undated, documents the impact of PBB on the Neyer family and their cattle and dairy farm, their ongoing efforts to educate themselves and the public about the dangers of PBB, in the media, and politically, and to fight for financial reimbursement in Circuit Court, and to understand and document the impact of PBB on their health.

The collection, 1974-2018 (Scattered) and undated, documents the impact of PBB on the Neyer family and their cattle and dairy farm, their ongoing efforts to educate themselves and the public about the dangers of PBB, in the media, and politically, and to fight for financial reimbursement in Circuit Court, and to understand and document the impact of PBB on their health. Parts of the collection were generated or collected by brothers David and George “Tim” Neyer. The collection has several broad series. The first and largest of these, over half of the collection, is collected documentation of the disaster and its impact. Research journal articles, newspaper and magazine clippings from local, state, and national publications, reports, fliers, and newsletters compose about half of the collection. Also in this series are correspondence, fliers, bills, and related information Neyer and his family collected from researchers, physicians, politicians, Michigan State University, Farm Bureau Services, the PBB Health Studies, a variety of beef and agricultural organizations. There are nine folders of materials from the Michigan departments of Agriculture and Public Health, later Community Health. Also included are communications, newsletters, and other information from organizations which sought to educate and inform farmers and the public about PBB and/or advocate for the farmers, notably the PBB Action Committee of Reed City (2 folders). A second series is the documentation of the direct impact of PBB on the Neyer family and farm as recorded the Neyer brothers’ ongoing efforts to tell the story from their perspective in the media, including newspapers and on television, in family cow photographs, family correspondence to Neyer and to politicians by Madden relatives, health test records, and the Neyers’ claim in Circuit Court, and related materials and correspondence with lawyers Abood, Abood and Abood, P.C. MI. Lastly, Tim’s efforts as a member of the PBB Citizens Advisory Board for Emory University, Rollins School of Public Health and its MI PBB Registry are documented in five folders. The collection is organized by size, alphabetically and chronologically.

In 2023 Archivist Marian Matyn obtained permission from George and Kacey Neyer to retain and make available for public research the family’s medical test results. Copies of the permission form are in the relevant folders in Box 1.

Processing Note: A total of .5 cubic feet of materials, mostly acidic or poor-quality newspaper clippings and articles, such as thermal copies, were returned to the donor as per the donor form. Photocopies of these items were retained in the collection. Also returned to the donor were a few items that were peripheral to the collection, such as copies of general family photographs. All photographs remaining in the collection were sleeved for preservation and access purposes.
