Central Michigan University. Women's Studies Program Organizational records, 1972-2011, and undated

The collection includes meeting minutes, agendas, and related materials, curricula materials, bylaws, assessments, budgets, statistics, newsletters, photographic materials, clippings (copies), correspondence, guest books, and other materials documenting the history of the program.

The collection documents the history and functions of the CMU Women’s Studies Program. Included in the collection are various meeting minutes, agendas, and related materials, course request change forms, syllabi, reports, bylaws, assessments, program reviews, budgets, statistics, newsletters, newspaper clippings (copies), photographs, negatives, slides, prints of e-photographs, fliers, emails, correspondence, advertisements, guest books, and other materials. Also included are meeting minutes, agendas, and related materials documenting related topical advisory boards that the director of women’s studies participated in. Materials are in alphabetical and chronological order.

Processing Note: Duplicate, out-of-scope materials, and temporary financial records (older than 7 years) totaling about 6 cubic feet were withdrawn from the collection during processing. Materials with social security numbers and other private information, about 1.5 cubic feet were shredded. Some materials were added from the CMU Vertical Files.

Charles E. Cleland Native American research collection, 1970-2008, and undated

The collection includes mostly photocopies of materials generated by various lawsuits, and other materials documenting Native Americans of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and First Peoples of Ontario, Canada, their history, culture, and relationship with the presiding government.Tribes documented are noted in the subject headings.

The collection includes mostly undated photocopies of materials generated by various tribal lawsuits against states and the United States (US) government in the collection. Some of the materials date back to the 1780s, but they are not originals, they are photocopies mostly made in the 1970s-1990s or later. There are some original reports and court records created during the time period of 1970-2008. The collection is rich in and dense in documenting Native Americans of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and First Peoples of Ontario, Canada, their history, culture, and relationship with the presiding government.

The collection is in original order. It is organized alphabetically by series by tribe or community seeking tribal status, reservation boundary (KBIC) case, tax case, or for hunting and fishing rights (Voight or LCO case) (105 boxes, 102.5 cubic feet). Within each series there are various subseries which may include: calendar documents (reference documents in chronological order), Cleland reports and reports of others (un/published), Cleland’s testimony as an expert witness, reference documents and/or un/published sources including newspaper or journal articles, books, maps, government reports, laws, land, legal and tax records, correspondence, business or personal records, excerpts from journals, diaries, and accounts, treaties, various US or Canadian court documents, miscellaneous and/or related documents, footnotes, project files, transcriptions of oral histories, finding aids, various types of maps, sketches, and genealogical and/or family charts. Some materials are bound volumes and others are oversized materials. Tribes or communities represented in the collection include:

Also included are 5x8 inch notecards (4 boxes, 1.5 cubic foot), which usually document in one box each: KBIC, Grand Portage, MI and MN Chippewas, and Voigt.

Lastly, nine oversized folders (larger than legal-size, about .5 cubic foot) include mostly photocopies of a wide variety of maps, treaty signers, genealogy notes and family tree, and land claims.

All boxes in the collection are 1 cubic foot boxes except for the following: Boxes #15, 25, 68, 74-75 are .5 cubic foot boxes; Box #113 is .25 cubic foot box, Box #117 is really an Overszied folder; Boxes #119-122 are 5x8 inch index card boxes.

Materials were collected from a plethora of local, state, and national archives and historical institutions, as well as tribal archives, and various courts, both American and Canadian.

Abbreviations: Professor Cleland and his staff used numerous, and sometimes various, abbreviations for institutions, record groups and/or series names or other citations. Some of these were obvious to the processors, others were not. Many of these abbreviations are not identified in this finding aid. For example, enclosure is abbreviated multiple ways. These variations were retained during processing. Some of these variations are obvious and can be deduced by researchers from the materials.

Also, due to the length of the collection, a number of abbreviations and grammatical changes were implemented by the archivist.

The archivist also deleted: ["no reference" and "incomplete reference"], the, a, or an (articles) at the beginning of a title; Anonymous or Author unknown or a.u.; unknown dates, undated, ND, or n.d. and s.u. Marian also changed: Microfilm to micro and “and” to and; and abbreviated certain common words, as noted below, and the names of months.

Also, the original punctuation used varies. A few of the original folder labels were crossed out partially or entirely. These variations were retained during processing.

Processing Notes: Only a few duplicate copies were withdrawn from the collection. Several items which had suffered physical damage mostly due to mud or dirt stains or being badly crumpled or torn were copied and the originals were withdrawn from the collection. (The total withdrawn from this collection was less than .25 cubic ft.).

The vast majority of the collection was organized into series by tribal name or topic, foldered, and labeled before it came to the Clarke. Original folders were maintained in the collection. We endeavored as much as possible to duplicate the original label headings (which varied somewhat from series to series) in the Box and folder listing. Items that were not foldered were foldered by the archivist, and those that were unlabeled were identified and labeled by the archivist.

A copy of William Theunissen’s Chippewa Valley Audubon Club, 1951-1992 history of the Club is separately cataloged in the Clarke.

Processing Note: Duplicate materials and acidic materials, which were copied, were returned to the donor as per the donor agreement.

Church of Jesus Christ (Strangite) Collection, 1843-1982, and undated

Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, meeting minutes, records, printed matter and miscellanea of the church, microfilm of legal cases, and images.

This is one of the finest collections in the U. S. of Strangite Mormon material in the world housed in a public institution. A large number of publications from Strang’s Beaver Island printing press are included. More significant is an excellent collection of letters and diaries of his Strangite followers. Also, there is a strong photographic collection of Strangites.

Topics covered include Strangite Mormonism, the Beaver Island colony, various Mormon controversies, the question of succession, etc. The papers of James J. Strang, the Strang Family, and Strangite followers (disciples): Mark A. Strang, Lorenzo Dow Hickey, Warren Post, Wingfield Watson, Lloyd A. Flanders, Stanley L. Johnson, and Alexandre Roger Caffiaux complete the collection.

U.S. District Court vs. James J. Strang, cases 9-22 records, 1851, are microfilmed and in the Mark Strang papers in Box 4. Additional related letters are in the James J. Strang papers in Box 1.

Some materials are microfilmed while many materials are photocopied from other institutions. Additionally, small additions to the collection may be found in the Strangite Miscellaneous Collection, Lorenzo Dow Hickey, and Watson Wingfield collections.

CMU. General Education Committee Organizational records, 1973-2015

The Organizational Records, 1973-2015, contain the Committee’s plans, reports, minutes, evaluations, notes, and request forms.

The Organizational Records, 1973-2015, contain the Committee’s plans, reports, minutes, evaluations, notes, and request forms. The collection is organized in alphabetical order. The majority of the collection contains minutes and annual reports for the General Education (Gen Ed) Committee, previously called the Gen Ed subcommittee, and implementation committee at CMU. The collection has many curriculum subject folders, each of which contains “request for course inclusion” forms and detailed notes of committee members for each course considered for Gen Ed status. The University Program folder contains information about the program telling its purpose and suggestions to be made to it. The collection has various evaluation reports made by graduating students and alumni giving their opinion of the University program in General Education and diverse reports on course enrollments and grades and reports on the General Education assessments for multiple dates. Researchers may also wish to review Gen Ed information in the meeting minutes of the Academic Senate, which is separately cataloged in the Clarke Historical Library.

This collection, from 1956 to 2008 with undated materials, includes materials collected by Bush in her activities with Republican political events. It includes coverage of local, state, and national Republican activities.

This collection, from 1956 to 2008 with undated materials, includes materials collected by Bush in her activities with Republican political events. It includes coverage of local, state, and national Republican activities. Included in the collection are photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, including personal thank you notes for her participation and donations to the Republican Party and candidates, tickets, and significantly, political pins, most of which are 1968 Kleenex Company reproductions of pre-1960s pins. Non-reproduction pins cover 1960s forward. There is also one sleeve in one folder of Democratic Party pins including notable presidents. Two miscellaneous items include a pendant of President Nixon’s face on a rusty chain, and a President G. W. Bush key chain. There is also an oversized award for Bush from Governor William G. Milliken appointing her as a member of the Bay County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, 1975. There is one folder about Swallow, which includes Letter, Photograph, and Newspaper Clippings (copies), 1969, undated. The first folder in Box 1 includes material crated by or about Arlene Bush, including Awards, Poem, Newsletter, Letter, and [her] Resume, 1964, 1976, undated. The collection is organized The collection is organized by size, then alphabetically.. Overall, except for the rusty chain, the collection is in good condition.

Processing Note: During processing, approximately 1 cubic foot of materials was removed from the collection and returned to the donor as per her request. Returned materials include: newspaper clippings (which were copied), duplicates, national publications, nationally produced and distributed photographs, bumper stickers, and pins. Two Michigan Republican tee shirts were also transferred to the CMU Museum of Cultural and Natural History.

The collection documents the club's history and finances.

The collection consists of Exhibit Scrapbooks and Correspondence documenting the history of the Creative Art Gallery and numerous exhibitions. Scrapbooks include photographs, drawings, programs, and newspaper articles about the exhibits and artists. Correspondence about exhibits was usually between the artist and Gallery discussing when, where, and what would be exhibited. Miscellaneous materials include an inventory of equipment of the Gallery, 1964-1965; Program Board correspondence, 19654-18965 about the Gallery’s programs; material related to a mini grant the Gallery received, 1973-1974; and an inventory of the Gallery’s art, 1980-1992. The collection is organized alphabetically by type of material and then chronologically.

Congressman Elford A. Cederberg Papers Collection, 1952-1978, 2006, and undated (majority within 1965-1978)

The collection documents the career of Michigan Representative Elford A. Cederberg, 1952-1978. It consists of political materials; including constituent correspondence, press-related, legislative-related and campaign materials; and grants, projects Obituaries of both Peg and Al Cederberg, 2006, were added in 2006. The collection contains paper materials as well as photographic, audio, and video materials.

Processing Notes: The archivist surveyed the Papers and created processing directions for the students. All boxes with private, personal information that Cederberg’s staff had listed as restricted materials were withdrawn. Academy nominations, resumes and job applications, and cases of prisoners, social security, passport or immigration, military, veterans, and taxes were among these materials. All publications, including bills and acts, except those containing a signed inscription to him, or about Watergate or the Committee on Appropriations were withdrawn. Other materials that were withdrawn from the collection include: all illegible and duplicate materials, general reading or FYI materials, miscellaneous requests for information, blank forms and stationery, materials related to unfunded grants and projects, invitations (except for a sample), thank you notes, and sympathy or congratulation cards.

For preservation purposes, newspaper clippings about Cederberg were photocopied onto acid-free paper and the originals were withdrawn.

The overall strength of the collection is that Cederberg’s work and interests document local Michigan concerns during his career as a Michigan Representative, 1952-1977. His District was mostly agricultural so those concerns are best represented. The Correspondence and Legislation series are of most value to researchers, followed by the Grants and Projects series that document small town and county issues in which he was involved and the thoughts and desires of his constituents.

The Cederberg Papers do not contain any materials relating to Cederberg’s years as Mayor of Bay City or any personal materials relating to his family or friends. Obituaries of Peg and Al Cederberg, 2006, were added at the beginning of Box 1 i 2006.

Audio-Visual Materials Series, 1952-1978 (7 boxes and 1 large folder, approx. 7 cubic feet) This series consists mostly of photographs, various types of video and cassette tapes, mostly of Cederberg giving presentations, or plaques and awards given to Cederberg. Of interest are photographs of Cederberg with mostly Republican politicians and an undated certificate from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe on birch bark to their good friend Cederberg for his various efforts on their behalf.

Books Series, 1958-1974 (4 boxes, 4 cubic feet) Composed of mostly Committee on Appropriations and Hearings budgetary volumes, there are also two books, one signed by J. Edgar Hoover, 1962, and one by Gerald R. Ford, 1965. The series serves as background information. There are no personal notes written in any of the Budgetary volumes, which are government publications.

Correspondence Series, 1953-1978 (13 boxes, 13 cubic feet) Correspondence includes approximately 2 cubic feet of Alphabetical Correspondence, organized chronologically and alphabetically by surname, 1953-1978, and Subject Correspondence, 1953-1978, arranged chronologically and roughly alphabetically by subject (topic). In this series there is information on taxes, veterans, social security, Vietnam, gun control (before and after President Kennedy’s assassination), Michigan college, and Michigan postmaster positions. Part of this series (box 26) includes information about travels Cederberg made to Vietnam and Michigan, among other places, 1955-1970. In this sub-series there are some photographs and photograph albums which document 1963 and 1968 visits. Also, there is a photograph album of the commissioning of the U.S.S. Saginaw, undated. The Subject part of the Correspondence Series is of greater use to the researcher and covers a plethora of topics of interest to Michiganders from 1953 to 1978.

Election Materials Series, 1968-1976 (1 box, four folders) There are four folders with Elections Materials, 1968-1976. This series includes photographs and paraphernalia from Cederberg’s election campaigns.

Grants Series, 1968-1976 (1 box, .75 cubic foot) Housed with the Elections Materials Series, the Grants Series, 1970-1978, includes state and federal grants awarded to cities, villages, counties, and townships in Cederberg=s congressional district. There are two folders of grants for Michigan Indians, 1975-1978. The Grants series is of interest to patrons researching local Michigan events and concerns. Each folder usually includes a copy of the grant and supporting documentation, if it existed. Most of the grants involve housing, sewer systems, or airports. Similar topics are documented in the Project Series.

Legislation Series, 1953-1978 (22 boxes, 21.5 cubic feet) This series consists of folders, chronologically and alphabetically organized, mostly consisting of correspondence from constituents to Cederberg. Legislative issues such as abortion, labor, taxes, social security, Vietnam, labor, and environmental concerns are well documented over the years. The first two boxes of the series cover agricultural issues. Budget issues that came before the Committee on Appropriations are also well documented.

News Releases Series, 1963-1978, and undated (1 box, .5 cubic feet) Found in Box 49 of the Legislation Series, the News Release Series includes an incomplete run of Cederberg’s newsletters, two radio announcements, some photographs, and four speeches he made. The series offers a superficial view of what Cederberg thought and actions that he took.

Projects Series, 1952-1978 (6 boxes, 6 cubic feet) This series includes project forms, reports, supporting documentation, and correspondence for federal and state projects awarded to cities, townships, and counties in Cederberg’s congressional district, as well as state-wide projects. Local projects usually include water, highway, sewer systems, housing, airports, flood or water control, urban renewal, conservation concerns, such as fish hatcheries, schools, hospitals or medical care facilities, parks, docks, and military training facilities. Of special interest are multiple folders for Saginaw and Wurtsmith Air Force Base projects. General state topics include Michigan cherries, Indians, and highways. There are a number of folders related to different Michigan regional or area development commissions. Similar topics are documented in the Grants Series.

Family Papers, 1865-2015, and undated, are a genealogical history for the Smalley and Beemer families and also documents early history of the white settlement of Clare, Michigan.

The collection contains many different formats including 3-dimensional objects, original documents, and printed material. Box 1 is legal sized, the rest are letter-sized boxes, Boxes 2-3 are .5 cubic foot boxes, and Box 4 is .25 cubic foot. The collection is organized according to original order. The folders are ordered so that you may recreate the binders that the documents were originally donated in. Besides this, the folders are ordered alphabetically. Box 1 (Legal) Includes: Mainly original documents which includes Tax Papers, Wills, Bank Papers, as well as Birth and Death Records. Most of this Box contains tax documents and related paraphernalia. Boxes 2-4 Include: history and genealogical study of the Beemer and Smalley families, including a focus on David Smalley and his time in the Civil War. Photographs, late 19th -20th centuries (Box 2, Folders 4/5; Box 3, Folders 2/5). An autograph book for Cordelia Smalley (Box 3, Folder 4). A rationing booklet with stamps intact (Box 4, Folder 2). A family history, as remembered by the donor (Box 4, Folder 2). There are multiple oversized and 3-dimensional objects, including Alice Smalley Beemer’s diploma from Central Normal School, 1909, a photograph probably of Alice Smalley Beemer printed onto cloth, a tinted photograph of what is probably the old centennial farm of the Smalley family, and the honorable discharge papers of David Smalley from the Civil War Union Army at age 18.

Oversized Materials: Multiple oversized and 3-dimensional objects. Some of which include Alice Smalley Beemer’s degree paper from Central Normal School dated to 1909, a picture of what we can assume is Alice Smalley Beemer printed onto cloth, which came to the archive framed, a tinted photograph of what is believed to be the old centennial farm of the Smalley family, and the honorable discharge papers of David Smalley from the Civil War Union Army at age 18.

Processing Note: 1 cubic foot of materials, including duplicates, blank documents, and books already a part of the collection, were removed and given back to the donor during processing. Six teacher’s books were separately cataloged.

Della T. Lutes’ papers include personal items, such as an autograph album, photographs, scrapbooks, and biographical materials, including numerous obituaries. However, the majority of her papers include drafts of articles; her published articles, columns, and books; and also critical reviews of her publications.

Rejection letters and notes in the collection prove that even successful Michigan authors sometimes get turned down. The collection is organized into the series of biographical/personal or publications, then divided by type of material, and organized alphabetically, and chronologically. The Clarke Historical Library also has 22 of her books.
