Flint, Michigan, attorney and Republican state representative. Correspondence concerning the automotive industry, particularly his firms dealing with the General Motors Corporation and other automobile companies; also papers concerning state politics, the Republican Party, and the Constitutional Convention of 1907-1908; also docket books, 1883-1921, with record of cases handled by Carton and his partners.

The Chase collection consists of correspondence, family materials, scrapbooks, and photographs. The correspondence dates from 1894 to 1955. One folder of letters is between Chase and James Cochran in which they discuss southern and northern attitudes toward Blacks. The family materials include letters of his mother Delia to Clara and Mary Noyes, and thirteen letters of the Chase-Beach family. There are also genealogical papers and a manuscript of "Personal Recollections of the Civil War" by Delia Chase. The scrapbook series includes letters, clippings, programs and photographs. One volume concerns Wilbert B. Hinsdale, Northern Michigan University, the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing, and the Chase family. Correspondents include: James B. Angell, Harriet Bates, Alberta Chase, Cornelia Chase, George W. Chase, Edna Ferber, Archibald MacLeish, Thomas Mann, Ambrose M. Shotwell, Shirley W. Smith, Isabel Van Tyne, and Alexander Woolcott.

Chicago, Illinois engineer, editor The American Engineer, member of the International Deep Waterways Commission. Professional correspondence relating to the Chicago Drainage Canal, the St. Lawrence Waterway, the Lakes-to-the-Gulf Deep Waterway Association, the controversy over the location of an isthmian canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, 1897-1898, and other public works consulting projects.

The Lyman Cooley papers reflect his interest in the Chicago Drainage Canal, the St. Lawrence Waterway, the Lakes to the Gulf Waterway, the Nicaragua vs. Panama Isthmian Canal controversy, and public works in the period 1880-1915. Comprised mainly of correspondence, the collection does include a few miscellaneous notes and reports.

Professor of Law and American History at the University of Michigan, Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Papers include correspondence, diaries, lectures, notes and photographs.

The Thomas McIntyre Cooley papers document the life and career of an attorney, jurist, teacher, scholar, and public official. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence received. A comprehensive calendar of these letters has been compiled by Virginia Ehrlicher in her doctoral thesis Thomas McIntyre Cooley : a calendar of his papers, 1846-1898. This three volume calendar is an important tool in accessing names of correspondents and topics covered. The remainder of the collection includes diaries, speeches, scrapbooks, course notes from some of his classes taught at the University of Michigan, and a scattering of photographs.

Correspondence with European and American historians, publishing houses, editors of learned journals, members of his family, and friends; also manuscripts of books and articles, lecture notes, student records, business papers, personal account books, diaries, 1938-1940, with comments on world events, and miscellaneous papers; and photographs.

Correspondence, including material on library administration, collection development, opening a new library in 1883, and the exhibition of University of Michigan professor's books at the 1893 World's Fair; also family correspondence, including letters discussing travels and Civil War service of family members; and photographs.

The collection includes correspondence; files relating to his career as chief librarian of the University of Michigan; personal and biographical materials; and speeches, essays, and writings.

The Demmon collection is comprised of the following series: Correspondence; Manuscripts; Essays and addresses; Other papers; and Photographs. The correspondence is both professional exchanges and personal letters among family members. Included are Demmon's student letters from Butler University and The University of Michigan, and two Civil War letters (1864) written while he was serving with 132nd Indiana Infantry. Among his professional correspondence are letters from James B. Angell, William L. Clements, Martin L. D'Ooge, Karl E. Guthe, Henry B. Joy, James McMillan, Moses C. Tyler. There are also lecture notes and other papers pertaining to his teaching duties; three volumes of personal accounts (1899-1920); a diary (1869) kept while he was a professor at Alliance College, Ohio, in which he mentions Mark Twain and John A. Bingham. The photographs include portraits, family photos and tintypes; photos of Demmon in the classroom, and of Demmon's residence in Ann Arbor.

Graduate of the University of Michigan (Class of 1862); later professor of Greek at the University of Michigan. A collection of D'Ooge's U-M classmates' autographs, an essay on U-M President James B. Angell, and a letter pertaining to revival of chapel services on campus.

The Martin Luther D'Ooge papers include autographs of University of Michigan classmates dated 1862; a manuscript of essay on James B. Angell; and a 1915 letter pertaining to revival of chapel services at the University.

Professor of history at University of Michigan. Correspondence and miscellanea concerning the University and personal affairs.

The Earle W. Dow collection consists mainly of correspondence with other historians and University of Michigan colleagues. Appended to this finding aid is a selective index to Dow's correspondents. Beyond correspondence, there is a scattering of other material relating to Dow's University of Michigan activities and to his involvement with the Belvedere Club of Charlevoix, Michigan.

The Fred S. Dunham collection includes professional correspondence and notes taken while a student at the University of Michigan, 1903-1907, in classes taught by Francis W. Kelsey, Walter Dennison, Robert M. Wenley, Joseph Drake, and James B. Angell. Other portions of the collection include lectures, publications, and topical files relating to professional affiliations and the University of Michigan School of Education. There are also some photographs and papers of L. Elizabeth Reed Dunham relating to her organizational activities.
