Background

Scope and Content:

The Martin Luther D'Ooge papers include autographs of University of Michigan classmates dated 1862; a manuscript of essay on James B. Angell; and a 1915 letter pertaining to revival of chapel services at the University.

Biographical / Historical:

Martin Luther D'Ooge emigrated with his family from the Netherlands to Grand Rapids, Michigan circa 1851. He studied Classic Philology at the University of Michigan, graduating with his Bachelor's degree in 1862. D'Ooge was headmaster of Ann Arbor High School from 1863-1865.

From 1864-1867, D'Ooge studied theology at the Union Theological Seminary, graduating with a Master's degree in 1865. In 1867, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Ancient Languages at Michigan State Normal School (now Eastern Michigan University), however in 1868 he returned to U-M as Acting Professor of Greek Language and Literature. In 1870, D'Ooge was appointed full professor.

D'Ooge took a two-year sabbatical during which he traveled to Germany to study with philologists Georg Curtius and Justus Hermann Lipsius. He was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1872.

From 1889-1897, D'Ooge was Dean of the U-M College of Literature and Science. He retired in 1912.
