The D. James Galbraith Photographic Collection reflects D. James (Jim) Galbraith's career as a photographer, covering more than five decades and containing thousands of pictures in the form of prints, negatives, and slides about everyday life in rural Michigan. The D. James Galbraith Photographic Collection is significant for its extensive photographic evidence of rural Michigan, particularly its emphasis on families, communities, and local institutions such as churches and schools. African American Detroit poet and librarian, and founder of Broadside Press in Detroit, Michigan which supported and published black and African American poets and authors. Poet laureate of Detroit, 1981. Materials consist of personal and business correspondence, topical files, photographs, drafts and publications, audio recordings, and film reels.

The papers document the personal and professional life of Dudley Randall as an independent African American poet and founder of the Broadside Press in Detroit, and span the years 1900-2002. Material includes drafts and publications of original works, correspondence, photographs, sound recordings on audiocassettes and audio reels, and films featuring Randall, his family, and poets connected to the Broadside Press. Series in the collection may have overlapping subjects, as original folder contents were maintained. Folders are arranged first by date, and then alphabetically by original title where applicable. The collection is divided into four series: Biographical (1900-2002), Broadside Press (1939-1999), Topical Files (1908-2002), and Writing (1933-1983).

Papers of Emerson F. Powrie, Ann Arbor, MI public schools teacher (1945-1948), principal (1948-1971), and Central Administration employee (1972-1977); and his wife Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie, teacher for the hearing-impaired children.

The Powrie family papers have been divided into three series: Emerson F. Powrie papers; Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie papers; and Visual Materials.

The Emerson F. Powrie's papers represent the bulk of the collection. The collection follows Powrie's career as an educator and Ann Arbor Public Schools Principal, and reflects on challenges and developments that took place in Ann Arbor Public Schools system in 1950s-early 1970s. Materials shed light on process of racial desegregation in schools among students as well as faculty; important demographic, social and economic changes in the area, and their effect on the student body, (i.e., school enrollment, racial and socio-economic composition of classes, etc.). Topics of teachers' education and training, and religion in public schools are prominent in correspondence.

The Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie's papers include her writings and research materials on the subject of teaching the hearing-impaired children.

Historian of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad; color slides documenting the C&O Railroad in Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio.

The Huddleston photographic slide collection consists of images primarily documenting the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The color slides have been arranged in alphabetical order by geographical location. Huddleston provided identification on each slide. The images are of trains, train stations, train trestles, railroad yards, etc.

University of Michigan group established in 1946 devoted to production of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Records include production files with programs, photographs, reviews and newspaper clippings, and scattered production notes and memoranda; topical files relating to the Society, its friends organization, and its publication; slides of productions; Society newsletter, "Gasbag"; posters; phonorecords, tapes, and videos of productions.

The records of UMGASS have been divided into ten series: Slides, Topical Files, Production Files, Posters, Memorabilia Volumes, Magnetic Tape Recordings, Sound Recordings, Audiotapes, Videotapes, and Scrapbooks. Because materials on one production can include photographs, scrapbooks, recordings, or slides- all of which live within different boxes of the collection -- a directory has been compiled in the Production Files series. The directory lists the year and title of the UMGASS production for which the library has materials and a lettered key exists that denotes the physical existence and location of materials within the collection.

Gordon Charles wrote syndicated columns on travel and outdoor activities for local Michigan newspapers. His collection contains his journals, copies and clippings of his articles, his books, subject files, slides, photographs, and correspondence.

F. A. Coller Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan from 1987-2004. Vascular surgeon, inventor of the Greenfield filter. Collection documents his surgical work and research and contains records from the Department of Surgery during his time there.

Volunteer service unit established at the University of Michigan Hospital in 1941. The Volunteer Services program expanded from patient registration and guide services to encompass a number of programs and outreach activities that extend beyond the hospital. The materials in the University of Michigan Health Systems Volunteer Services collection contain information on the service beginning with its formal establishment in 1941. Items include topical files, photographs, and audiovisual materials covering programming, volunteer recruitment, and especially volunteer recognition.

The University of Michigan Health System Volunteer Services collection covers the years from 1937 to 2007. The majority of the material covers the years 1981-1995. The records include some history and establishment information, but a majority of the information deals with the annual volunteer recognition program. There is also a significant amount of photographs, including photographs of individuals volunteering as well as photographs from the annual volunteer recognition program. The collection has been organized into five series: Topical Files, Publications, Volunteer Recognition, Audio-Visual Materials, and Ephemera.

The records of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan document the history of the organization and the family planning services it has provided to Michigan residents. The records are a good source of information on the history of birth control, abortion, sex education, and women’s health issues in the state from the 1930s to the turn of the twenty first century. In addition to the Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan files, the collection includes records documenting the Planned Parenthood Association of Southwestern Michigan and Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan, dating from the period before these two organizations merged with Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan. Materials include board minutes and reports, correspondence, organizational handbooks and policy statements, pamphlets, newsletters, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, and videotapes.

The Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan record group covers the period of time from the founding of the organization in 1935 through 2007. The history of the organization is documented in this collection. Extensive information about the services offered by Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan can also be found in this collection. These include medical, counseling, and educational activities.
