The Alexander Ruthven papers consists of two series of records. The first is the papers of Ruthven as president of the University of Michigan, 1929 to 1951. The second, and smaller, series is the files maintained by Ruthven as a zoologist with the University Museum and as professor of zoology. This latter series dates largely from 1908 to 1929 but also includes collected earlier files from the 1870s.

The Arthur H. Vandenberg collection consists of 8 linear feet of materials (available on microfilm), 25 volumes of scrapbook/journals, and assorted audio and visual materials. The collection covers Vandenberg's entire career with a few folders of papers post-dating his death in 1951 relating to the dedication of memorial rooms in his honor in the 1970s. The collection is divided into four major series: Correspondence; Speeches; Campaign and Miscellaneous Topical; Clippings, Articles, and Scrapbooks; Miscellaneous and Personal; Visual Materials; and Sound Recordings.

Edward Gearing Kemp was an attorney who served as legal adviser of Frank Murphy. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, and other materials related to Kemp's work with Murphy and other professional activities, and memorabilia.

Mainly correspondence related to Kemp's professional affairs, particularly his work with Murphy in the Philippines and Kemp's service as an Assistant to the U.S. Attorney General and at the U.S. Bureau of the Budget. Kemp's correspondents included Henry M. Bates, Thomas E. Dewey, Arthur S. Flemming, J. Edgar Hoover, Charles E. Hughes, Cordell Hull, Robert H. Jackson, J. Weldon Jones, George A. Malcolm, Frank Murphy, Chase S. Osborn, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, among others.

The Philippines-period photographs depict Murphy, his sister Marguerite Murphy, Kemp, other members of Murphy's staff (e.g., Murphy's secretary Eleanor Bumgardner) and their families, as well as scenes in the Philippines. Materials related to Kemp's career in Washington include mostly newspaper clippings, letters, invitations, and memorabilia.

The collection also includes a small amount of biographical information and miscellaneous material (personal applications and notes, work-related notes, summaries of reports, etc.)

The Bumgardner papers consist of two major series. The first is made up of Frank Murphy papers, including correspondence prior to July 1949, speeches of Murphy, and clippings and biographical materials. The second series pertains primarily to Bumgardner's activities and includes correspondence after July 1949, a topical file of clippings maintained by Bumgardner, miscellaneous books, clippings, and scrapbooks. There are also several files of photographs, portraits and informal photos, of Frank Murphy and Eleanor Bumgardner.

The Fitzgerald papers date from 1928 to 1944 but the bulk of the collection falls within the period of 1930 to 1939, the year of Fitzgerald's death. Papers dated after 1939 are those of his wife Queena. The collection primarily concerns the mechanics of campaigning for office with little documentation of the administration of either the office of secretary of state or governor. The collection has been arranged into seven series: Correspondence; Biographical / Personal; Photographs; Speeches and Press Releases; Political Career; National Republican Party published material; and Scrapbooks.

The largest series in the collection - Correspondence - is important for showing the range of Fitzgerald's political acquaintances and his skill in achieving elective office. A selective index to those who corresponded with Fitzgerald is appended to this finding aid.

Attorney General and U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The Frank Murphy Collection documents in detail the life and career of one of Michigan's most distinguished public servants. Through correspondence, subject files, scrapbooks, visual materials, and other documentation, the collection traces Murphy's life from his years as Detroit judge, later Mayor, to his service in the Philippines, his tenure as governor, his stint as U.S. Attorney General, and culminating in his final years as U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

The Reeves papers largely concern JSR's activities as professor (also chairman) of the University of Michigan Department of Political Science from his appointment in 1910 until his retirement in 1937. The great bulk of the collection consists of Reeves' correspondence. With this is a smaller series of such other materials as lectures, research materials, professional organizational materials. As vice governor of the Philippine Islands during the 1930s, and later as advisor on Philippine affairs to General Douglas MacArthur during World War II, Joseph R. Hayden was recipient of much substantive documentation relating to the American phase of Philippine Island history. Hayden was an astute and discerning scholar of Philippine life and history, and as such used the opportunity of his frequent trips to the Far East to collect materials (official and personal) that he knew would be of value in his teaching and research, and that he also hoped would prove useful to scholars following after him. Although the Hayden papers include some non-Philippine materials, such as his University of Michigan files and those records from his service with the Michigan Naval Division during World War I, the Philippine Collection is the heart of the collection. Comprising more than 75% of the Hayden papers, the Philippine Collection is testimony to Hayden's foresight in drawing together official documents (because of the positions he held) and other records (sent to him because of his known interest in the Philippines). This collection of official reports, minutes of meetings attended, memoranda with government officials, photographs, clippings, and published materials is unique, especially because of the devastation to Philippine public records and historical documents that occurred during the war.
