The correspondence exclusively pertains to business matters, such as prices and price comparisons, plans for picking up or shipping merchandise, settling of accounts, and other issues regarding sales and purchases. The business papers consist of orders, invoices, shipment notifications, receipts, accounts, and other commercial documents. The Abeel papers mention many items handled by the company, including bars, bands, hoops, rods, anchor parts, nails and spikes, knives, wagon tires, and many other iron goods.

The Daniel Morgan collection is made up of 63 financial records, legal documents, correspondence, and other items related to General Daniel Morgan and to Willoughby Morgan, his son. The majority of the collection consists of accounts, bonds, promissory notes, and other documents pertaining to Daniel Morgan's financial affairs. Accounts and invoices record Morgan's purchases of clothing, wagon-related equipment and services, and other items. Some of the later items do not concern Morgan directly but have his legal endorsement. Also included are two outgoing letters by Morgan, a 9-page legal document about a lawsuit against Morgan, and a deposition that Morgan gave in a different dispute. Other items are a bond regarding Morgan's marriage to Abigail Curry (March 30, 1773) and Morgan's political address to the citizens of Allegheny County about politics and the militia (January 17, 1795). Three of the documents pertain to enslaved and free African Americans (November 6, 1773; June 13, 1789; and March 28, 1799). Later items mostly pertain to the estate of Willoughby Morgan, Daniel Morgan's son. James Graham wrote two letters to unknown recipients in 1847 and 1856 about his efforts to write Daniel Morgan's biography, which he subsequently published.

Printed items include a map of the surrender of Yorktown (undated), a newspaper article from a Winchester, Virginia, paper about the possible disinterment of Daniel Morgan's remains (August 18, 1951), and printed portraits of Daniel Morgan with manuscript and facsimile autographs.

The Phebe Plant collection is mostly made up of personal correspondence between Plant and her friend Martha Barnes, especially regarding their religious convictions, as well as letters to Plant's mother, Rebecca Hearsey. Other items include a religious diary and poetry.

The Phoebe Plant collection (53 items) is mostly made up of personal correspondence between Plant and her friend Martha Barnes, as well as letters to Plant's mother, Rebecca Hearsey. Martha Barnes wrote to Phebe Plant from 1814-1819, often discussing her religious convictions and, on one occasion, a religious experience with an auditory component (April 21, 1818; in letter dated April 16, 1818). In a letter dated March 1815, she discussed her reaction to a book about Harriet Newell. Plant's letters to Barnes are mainly contained in an 18-page set of retained copies, which includes entries dated from December 19, 1814-November 30, 1815. Plant wrote about her Christian convictions. Other items by Plant include a religious diary with infrequent entries (July 2, 1816-June 15, [1817], 12 pages) and a poem "composed on the death of a wife" (1818).

After Plant's death in 1819, Martha Barnes occasionally wrote to Plant's mother, Rebecca Hearsey, offering condolences and reflecting on her friendship with Plant. The collection also contains letters that Rebecca Hearsey received from members of the Judd family and others; an account about the estate of Joseph Plant of Southington, Connecticut; and an invoice addressed to the Hearsey family (June 12, 1815).

The papers of Horace Mann (1796-1859), lawyer, congressman, and educational reformer, contain correspondence and documents spanning his early legal career to the years before his death, as well as miscellaneous quotations, notes, and photographs.

The Horace Mann papers date from his early career as a lawyer until 1857, two years before his death (plus a single outlying 1876 item). The collection contains 51 letters (1823-1876), 83 bills/receipts (1824-1833), 15 legal documents (1824-1837), 2 promissory notes (1826; 1829), 4 graphic items, 1 printed bibliography, and 6 autographs, notations, and miscellaneous items.

Beginning with a letter to Ira Barton, in which he praises Barton's oration at the previous year's Independence Day celebration (March 20, 1823), the forty-eight outgoing letters of Horace Mann cover a variety of topics. Eloquently written, these letters provide information about Mann's own thoughts and perspectives. Many of them contain responses to requests to give lectures and others pertain to his perpetually full schedule. They include remarks regarding opposition to the Massachusetts Board of Education in the years following its formation, discussions with P.M. Upson (a Eutaw, Alabama teacher) about his annual reports and the Common Journal (1845), suggestions to J.B. Vandever for the construction of a school (1851), plans and details surrounding the formation of a teachers' institute at Fitchburg, Massachusetts (in correspondence with Charles Mason, 1845), comments on his nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1848, efforts to procure funds to send Mr. Pierce to the World Peace Convention in 1849, friendly conversations with and advice to Samuel Downer, Jr. (from Antioch College, 1854-1857), and other subjects.

Horace Mann did not write two of the letters in this collection. One, by Edward Everett, nominates an unnamed person to a position on the Massachusetts Board of Education (to fill Edward A. Newton's vacant seat). The other, written in 1876 by Mary Mann to Miss Jacobson (who was inspired by Horace Mann's work), encloses a fragment from one of his manuscripts.

The 83 bills/receipts include itemized fees for Horace Mann's services as prosecuting attorney for clients in Norfolk County. Each of these financial documents include fees for writs, entry and court dues, travel expenses, trial attendance, and individual tasks, such as receiving and swearing in the complainant and summoning witnesses.

The 15 legal documents are miscellaneous, related to almost as many different court cases. Most of them regard financial claims and are signed by Horace Mann as attorney for the plaintiffs. One document stands out above the others: the appointment of the first Massachusetts Board of Education, dated May 25, 1837. Signed by Edward Everett and Secretary John P. Bigelow, this item names James G. Carter, Emerson Davis, Edmund Dwight, Horace Mann, Edward A. Newton, Robert Rantoul, Jr., Thomas Robbins, and Jared Sparks to the Board. It bears the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Four graphic items in the collection include three portraits of Horace Mann and a single negative. These images are: one reproduction of an illustration; one hand-colored and mounted albumin print (oval vignette); and one modern photographic reproduction of an earlier touched-up reproduction of a daguerreotype (with an accompanying negative).

The collection contains a printed 31-page "Bibliography of Horace Mann," prepared by Horace Mann’s son, Benjamin Pickman Mann, December 9, 1896. This bibliography was published in the US Bureau of Education, Report of the Commissioner for 1896-1897, vol. 1 (Washington, D.C., 1898).

A small selection of quotations, notations, autographs, and miscellany completes the collection. One signed quotation reads: "I would rather imitate the actions of one good man than to possess the autographs of all the great men in the world." Another small sheet contains the autographs of several Massachusetts Congressmen. Other miscellaneous items include fragments of papers on the responsibilities and jurisdiction of a town's school committees and rules for proper behavior.

This collection contains a notebook and financial records pertaining to William Ellis's journeys from Dedham, Massachusetts, to northern New Hampshire and his purchases from animal trappers in western New York in the early 19th century.

The William Ellis collection is made up of 1 notebook and 5 financial records. The notebook contains lists of towns that Ellis passed through while making separate trips from Dedham, Massachusetts, to northern New Hampshire from October 19, 1808-November 4, 1808 (3 pages, including the return journey to Dedham) and July 10, 1809-July 22, 1809 (2 pages). The volume also has a list of names (1 page) and undated accounts regarding Ellis's livestock purchases (1 page). Four of the remaining documents are invoices for animal furs that Ellis bought from traders in Buffalo and Niagara, New York, in July 1810. The Jefferys & Faden collection is made up of 2 bound volumes containing 89 incoming letters to the firm and to William Faden. Most letters pertain to the acquisition, availability, and publication of maps.

The first volume has 62 incoming letters and invoices (August 26, 1773-October 13, 1783) to Jefferys & Faden and, after 1776, to William Faden. Map sellers, cartographers, and booksellers in France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy wrote about map publication and availability. Correspondents included Italian engraver Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni and French engraver and map dealer John Lattré, who often requested maps depicting areas of significance during the American Revolution. Invoices concern maps sent to the firm and to Faden. The volume also contains a loose, three-page advertisement in French for the geographical maps and other works of [Jean Baptiste Bourguignon] d'Anville.

The second volume has 8 letters to William Faden from George Lamers and 19 from W. [Famitte] (May 15, 1781-October 23, 1783). Famitte discussed maps that he sent to Faden and described his efforts to locate various maps. In his letter of May 5, 1783, Famitte affixed a newspaper advertisement in English for the publication of a hydrographical survey of the North Channel and St. George's Channel.

Lindley Fisher correspondence, 1846-1851 (majority within 1846-1849)

Lindley Fisher of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received 59 business letters and invoices concerning the Duncannon Iron Works between 1846 and 1851. His most frequent correspondents included his brother, Charles William Fisher; his father, William Logan Fisher; and his nephew, John Wister. Fisher also received business invoices from Joseph S. Simpson.

Lindley Fisher of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received 35 business letters and invoices concerning the Duncannon Iron Works between 1846 and 1851. Fisher's father, brother, and nephew worked at the factory and provided information related to its finances and to the production of nails, spikes, and bar iron. Charles William Fisher, Lindley's brother, wrote the bulk of the letters between 1846 and 1849, concentrating on the foundry's financial affairs, business relationships, and production figures. Lindley received similar letters from his father and nephew, who discussed some of the day-to-day aspects of running the iron works as well as its larger financial concerns.

The correspondence includes content on labor and labor-management relations, particularly in a letter from C. W. Fisher, dated May 11, 1848. In it, he reacts to the receipt of wage demands from a delegation of organized puddlers. He expressed confusion as to how to respond, noting that to concede to their demands would be "to cover ourselves with disgrace & to acknowledge our weakness." He wrote "I am sorry we attempted the reduction By holding out for a month or two we can conquer them, but this would be destruction - what is to be done? . . . I would almost as willingly fail as yield. Is there no escape - I thought today that I should be able to effect the reduction or find a way of getting out with honour, but I see nothing before me but the most ignominious submission - we shall make ourselves the subject of derision in the neighbourhood & we shall feel the effects of it for a long time to come - If we yield to the Puddlers we must give up the reduction throughout - Oh how I wish for a little independence This is the worst sort of slavery..."

In the spring of 1849, Lindley's correspondents mentioned efforts to establish a new nail-producing facility and discussed some of their business strategies, such as the possibility of offering stock. In his letter of April 2, 1851, William Logan Fisher mentioned the potential purchase of a steam engine, though he feared that the factory's debts might lead to future difficulties. In addition to his family's letters, Lindley Fisher received 3 invoices signed by Joseph S. Simpson, primarily respecting the shipment of nails produced at the Duncannon Iron Works between April and July 1849.

The Great Britain Indian Department collection is made up of documents, letters, and manuscripts relating to interactions between government and military officials, Native Americans, and American residents from 1753 to 1795. The bulk of the collection concerns British interactions with Native Americans in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, with some material relating to South Carolina, Michigan, and Virginia. Official documents include passes for Native American travelers, speeches to and from Native American groups, copies of treaties, and reports and correspondence relative to diplomacy, peace efforts, and military affairs. Materials relay information on boundary disputes, prisoner exchanges, crimes committed against both American settlers and Native Americans, and Native American distress over land infringements.

Of particular note are the Albany Commissioners of Indian Affairs' reports (112 pages) from June 1753 to May 1755. These include copies of correspondence, reports of meetings with Native American groups, and remarks on fort construction, prisoner exchange, rivalries with the French, religious evangelization, and diplomacy. The collection also includes a manuscript copy of the August 1768 journal of Benjamin Roberts, an Indian commissary, in which he describes the trial of Captain Robert Rogers for treason.

Hanuman Books was founded by Raymond Foye and Francesco Clemente in 1986. The press published small handmade books, primarily of works by contemporary avant-garde writers and rare translations. The administrative and editorial functions were housed in New York's Chelsea Hotel, while printing and binding were done in Madras, India. Through correspondence, invoices, manuscripts, typescripts, artwork, audiotapes, printed ephemera, photographs and books, this collection documents the founding of Hanuman Books, the administration of a small press, Indian printing practices, San Francisco’s North Beach and New York’s Lower East Side art scenes, Beat poetry, the Naropa Institute, contemporary music and film, and gay culture.

The Hanuman Books Records include correspondence, invoices, manuscripts, typescripts, books, art work, audio material, printed material, photographs, and other assorted material. The twenty linear feet of records span the years 1978 to 1996, with the bulk of the material falling between 1986 and 1994. Subjects documented in the collection include the founding of Hanuman Books, the administration of a small New York press, Indian printing, twentieth- century publishing, San Francisco’s North Beach and New York’s Lower East Side literary and art scenes, Beat poetry, the Naropa Institute, music, film, gay men in the 1980s and 1990s, and gay male literature. The Records are arranged in six series: Administrative Files (1986-1994), Publication Series (1986-1994), Raymond Foye Files (1978-1996), Mixed Media (1980s-1990s), Photographs (1970s-1990s), and Printed Material (1970s-1994).
