Joseph Kumao Sano was a Japanese American veteran and lawyer whose family was forcibly removed to illegal detention centers during World War II. While incarcerated, Sano was recruited by the Army to serve as a Japanese language instructor for the Army Intensive Japanese Language School. Sano's military work extended beyond language instruction; he participated in the Strategic Bombing Survey in 1945 and served as a bilingual arbiter for the International War Tribunal for the Far East from 1946 until 1948. His papers consist of materials related to Japanese American incarceration; pedagogical notes for the Army Intensive Japanese Language School; and Sano's arbitration work. It also includes Sano's personal files, scrapbooks, and concentration camp ID cards.

The Joseph Kumao Sano papers are divided into three series: Personal Papers; War-time Imprisonment and Military Service; and Scrapbooks and Artifacts. His personal papers primarily consist of biographical material; identification and permits; and documentation from Sano's work with the California Bank. It also includes correspondence between Sano and his family.

Materials in the War-time Imprisonment and Military Service series document the forced removal of the Sano family from California to the Santa Anita detention center and the Jerome concentration camp; and Sano's work for the Army Intensive Japanese Language School, the Strategic Bomb Survey, and his service during the International War Tribunal for the Far East. It also includes his work post-war with the Bank of Japan.

The Scrapbooks and Artifacts series contains scrapbooks and albums documenting Sano's life until the forced removal of Japanese Americans in 1941, his work for the International War Tribunal for the Far East, certificates, Bank of Japan photographs, and personal photos of the Sano family. Also included are a number of objects collected by Sano during the war in the United States, and from Post-war Japan.

Detroit (Mich.) businessman and chairman of New Detroit Committee, organization established after the 1967 Detroit Riot to investigate and remedy the causes of that civil disturbance. Correspondence, reports, speeches, articles, photographs, and printed material relating to the riot and to his work with New Detroit.

The papers of Joseph L. Hudson, Jr., date from 1967 to 1983 and measure 6 inches. The collection consists entirely of material relating to the New Detroit Committee, which Hudson chaired during its first year of existence.

The collection includes correspondence relating primarily to the composition of the Committee; membership lists; notes made by Hudson; speeches and articles by Hudson and by Kent Mathewson, who was chief executive officer of New Detroit; press releases and periodic progress reports of New Detroit; photographs; and newspaper clippings about the, riot and about New Detroit. Most of the material dates from the period 1967 to 1969, but a few progress reports from the 1970s and 1980s and a 1983 General Fact Book regarding New Detroit are also included.

The papers reflect the difficulties faced by Hudson and the Committee in trying to create an organization that included representatives of the white "establishment" and grass roots black organizations. It was necessary for the Committee to be responsive to the needs of various sectors of the community ranging from prominent white businessmen to militant blacks. A folder entitled "Important Considerations" contains a frank assessment--apparently by Hudson--of the credibility problems the Committee would face within the black community and outlining steps to be taken to mitigate such problems. The collection is also useful in documenting attitudes and divisions within the black community over the direction that should be taken in rebuilding Detroit. Included is correspondence of the Federation for Self-Determination, a militant black organization that rejected a grant from New Detroit and severed its relations with the committee early in 1968 because it found unacceptable the stipulation that a New Detroit Committee member oversee the project. Also included is correspondence of the more moderate Detroit Council of Organizations, which accused the New Detroit Committee of catering to militant blacks and ignoring the desires of moderate blacks.

Several photographs of the July 27, 1967 meeting of community leaders are contained in the collection.

The Joseph Vining papers contain 59 linear feet and 3.71 GB of personal and family papers, correspondence, writings, and topical files materials illustrating Vining's personal life, legal career, and scholarly work. The collection is divided into four series.

The Personal and Family Papers series features Vining's personal diaries and poetry written by Vining.

The Correspondence series contains correspondence organized by topic, year, and correspondent that focuses on Vining's legal career, scholarship, and leadership at the University of Michigan Law School.

The Speeches and Writings series includes recordings, transcripts, notes, and correspondence from speeches and presentations delivered by Vining. The series also contains correspondence, records, and notes from Vining's published and unpublished scholarly writings.

The Topical Files series contains materials about Vining's early legal career in Washington, D.C., his membership in various professional associations, and his scholarly work.

Papers of Josh Mack, an African American education specialist, civic leader, and former Detroit Board of Education member. The collection includes biographical materials, articles and press releases, correspondence (including some from former Michigan politicians), curriculum guidelines from the Wayne County Attention Centers, a small amount of photographs, an audio recording of a Testimonial event, a digital file comprising of several television interviews and news clips, and other collected materials pertaining to Mack's professional career and civic duties.

The collection primarily focuses on Mack's tenure as an education specialist, Detroit Board of Education member, and as a civic leader, particularly in Detroit's North End neighborhood.

Records include biographical materials, articles and press releases about Mack's professional career and civic activities, correspondence, writings, curriculum materials --primarily from Mack's tenure as an administrative coordinator with the Wayne County Attention Centers,--and collected items pertaining to Mack's professional activities and his interest in education, job training, and counseling services for minorities. Also included several digital news clips and interviews.

Associate professor of kinesiology and coach of the synchronized swimming team at the University of Michigan and national officer in United States Synchronized Swimming. Material relating to the Michifish Swim Club and the synchronized swimming team both as a club sport and varsity sport. Records include meeting agendas and minutes, budget and fundraising files, publicity materials, meet information and results, correspondence, photographs, and motion pictures.

The Joyce Lindeman papers are divided into five series: Michifish, Topical Files, Varsity Teams, Department of Physical Education, United States Synchronized Swimming Incorporated, Photographs and Slides, and Motion Pictures. The contents chronicle the synchronized swimming team's promising rise from club to varsity status, and then the team's unexpected return to club status. The materials also document her work as a professor at the University of Michigan and her involvement in synchronized swimming at the national level.

The Julio Perazza collection includes three series: Visual, Printed, and Audiovisual. The collection offers significant visual documentation to researchers interested in artistic photography, the Detroit Latino community, Detroit Police Department, and the city of Detroit in general. Highlights of the collection include photographs of Latino community cultural events, daily police activities, and Perazza's "Demolished by Neglect" series, a photographic critique of Detroit's urban policies.

Dr. June Manning Thomas is a Black University of Michigan alum (Ph.D. 1977) and the Mary Frances Berry Distinguished University Professor Emerita of Urban Planning, and the Centennial Professor Emerita of Urban and Regional Planning. The collection includes biographical and teaching material, interview notes and related material, papers, presentations, publications, reports, and topical files.

The material in the June Manning Thomas papers is dated from 1951-2021 (bulk 1990-2010) and primarily documents Dr. Thomas's professional activities and research interests. The collection is organized into several file groups. The Biographical file includes clippings, photographs, correspondence, vitae, and related material about Thomas. The Collected Materials file contains miscellaneous publications, reports, and other material from Dr. Thomas's bookshelf that are not directly connected to her own work. The Research, Publications, and Related Material file includes interview material, papers and presentations, reports, topical files, and other material related to her professional efforts, research, and scholarship. The Teaching file group includes course material, syllabi, and topical files related to Thomas's teaching, primarily at the University of Michigan.

J. V. Smith was a Detroit architect. The Davenport house was built on East Michigan Avenue in Saline, Mich. in ca. 1872-1874 for Beverly Davenport.

Founded in 1975 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kadushin Associates is an architectural firm specializing in affordable housing, mixed use developments, sustainable and community design, historic rehabilitation and renovation, and expansion and renovation projects, particularly in Detroit, Michigan, and its environs. Material is dated from 1951-2011 (bulk 1990-2011) and includes large architectural drawings, correspondence, development plans, photographic material, and project manuals.

The Kadushin Associates records document the firm's projects, especially those related to affordable housing, sustainable community design, and historic rehabilitation and renovation. The materials in this collection include large architectural drawings—such as elevation, framing, floor, section, and site drawings—as well as correspondence, development plans, photographic material, and project manuals. The "Project Files" series also includes material produced by the Urban Collaborative, the predecessor of Kadushin Associates.

Researchers should note that many of the geographically designated files in the "Project Files" series have a "collected material" file that consists of collected / reference material that, while not explicitly produced by Kadushin Associates or associated with the firm's projects, are related to the associated city, township, or county file. These files are typically found at the end of each file or, if they are oversized, within separate boxes.

Owner and operator of the Shaman Drum Bookshop, a noted independent bookstore in Ann Arbor, Mich. that gained national recognition and regularly hosted leading contemporary American writers from 1981 until its closure in 2009. Collection includes business records, articles about the bookselling industry, press coverage, photographs, printed broadsides, catalogs, store newsletters and posters documenting events at the Shaman Drum. Also contains records of Pohrt's other business affiliations and involvement in local cultural initiatives such as the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair and the Ann Arbor Book Festival.

The Karl Pohrt papers consist of materials relating to Pohrt's personal life, education, teaching, business ventures, and involvement in professional associations and community initiatives. Photographs, personal writings, signed broadsides, and correspondence document Pohrt's contact and friendships with writers and academics. In addition, the Pohrt papers include press articles and documentation from meetings providing a view into the effects of online retail on the bookselling industry.
