Scholar and professor of English at University of Michigan. Diaries, manuscripts of dramas and other writings, Shakespearean notes and lecture materials and personal and professional correspondence, including correspondence and other material relating to his service with the British Infantry during World War I.

The collection contain diaries, personal and professional correspondence, articles, lectures, research notes, and literary manuscripts; material relates extensively to Shakespearean, Elizabethan, and Jacobean literary scholarship and the teaching thereof, to Catholicism (including the English liturgy), and to Harrison's service with the British Infantry in India and Mesopotamia (Iraq) during World War I. There is also material relating to feminism, publishing and copyright, rare books, and staging Elizabethan plays. Noteworthy is the extensive and substantive correspondence with Guy Hamilton and Gerald Cullinan, which ranges over literature, scholarship, politics, and personalities in the U.S. and England.

The G.B. Harrison collection is divided into the following series: Diaries; Correspondence; Religious Activities; Addresses and Lectures; Articles, Reviews, and Pamphlets; and Manuscripts of writings.

The Geddes and Randall Family papers record early life in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. The papers include financial records of paper and sawmills, pioneer reminiscences, personal photographs, and genealogical materials.

The Geddes and Randall Family Papers are subdivided into two series, one for each family. John Geddes papers include reminiscences of his coming to Michigan and his settlement in Ann Arbor. There are also financial records of the sawmill and a journal of daily happenings, 1845-1889, also containing genealogical information. The Randall family papers include correspondence, financial papers and brief diary entries of William Randall; and photograph albums of Sarah Randall.

Law student at University of Michigan; administrative assistant to Michigan Democratic State Senator John T. Bowman. Legislative log recounting debate over Congressional reapportionment in the Michigan Legislature; case study entitled, "Congressional Redistricting in Michigan After the 1970 Decennial Census"; and letter received by John Bowman on the subject of cross-district busing.

The George C. Steeh collection is comprised of those records created from his period of service to Senator Bowman. Included is a series of folders which Steeh labeled his "Legislative Log." Covering the period of January to May 1972, the log consists of Steeh's daily notes on Bowman's actions and maneuvers during the debate over Congressional redistricting in the State Legislature. This is followed by an extensive (174 p.) narrative and analysis of the Michigan redistricting struggle entitled, "Congressional Redistricting in Michigan after the 1970 Decennial Census: A Case Study." Steeh based his analysis upon the work he did for Bowman, a series of interviews with the principal participants in the redistricting debate, and examination of the Senate and House Journals and newspaper coverage of the debate. Beyond this, the collection includes a scattering of correspondence received by Bowman on the issue of cross-district busing.

Missionary to China, ca. 1900-1939. Letters, 1911-1932, to family members describing in detail missionary life, the political situation in China, and family matters; diary, 1942-1943, describing internment in Peking by the Japanese Army; letter of son, Theodore Stanley Wilder, to his grandmother concerning China experiences; reminiscences of T. S. Wilder, and photographs and other materials.

The collection consists of two series of papers. First there are letters that Wilder wrote to family members describing his life as a missionary in China. The next series of other papers includes a diary describing his internment by the Japanese during World War II and a remembrance of the life and work of his missionary parents written by Theodore S. Wilder.

Justice on the Michigan Supreme Court, official in Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Sovereign Grand Commander, Supreme Council, Northern Jurisdiction. Correspondence and other topical files largely relating to activities and offices held within Scottish Rite Freemasonry.

The George Bushnell collection, except for a small series of personal and political correspondence, and some speeches, concerns Masonic organizations and activities. The series in the collection are: Personal / biographical; Correspondence; Speeches; Topical files - Masonic activities; Name Files (personal and Masonic); Visitation Files; Foreign Chapters; Records of other Masonic officers; Miscellaneous; and Scrapbooks.

Surveyor of lands in northern Michigan and in the Upper Peninsula; Macomb County land speculator; journal of his surveying expedition along the shores of Lake Superior, letters received, historical essays, family materials.

The George Cannon collection consists of letters, a journal, historical essays written for the Macomb County Historical Society, and various land records, including some surveying notes. Most of the letters were received by Cannon or other members of his family. There is in these letters much documentation relating to the Upper Peninsula and to the history of the settlement of Macomb County. Of especial interest are those letters and documents relating to the border dispute between Wisconsin and Michigan (particularly in the period of the first decade of the 20th Century) arising out of a surveying error in the 1830s. Many of the letters are from Upper Peninsula businessman and University of Michigan Regent Peter White.

Other items of interest are essays and lectures of the students who attended the Stony Creek Lyceum Rochester School where Cannon taught in the 1840s, a few Civil War letters from his brother Levi Cannon who served with Co. B of the 22nd Michigan Infantry, and essays Cannon wrote on his surveying mentor William A. Burt and on the early settlement of Macomb County.

The Lockley papers include diaries, transcriptions of diaries, maps of battles in which he participated, including the first and second battles of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Also included is a copy of a report by Lt. Colonel Benjamin D. Pritchard on the capture of Jefferson Davis and other Confederate leaders by the 4th Michigan Cavalry. There are also a few photographs and miscellaneous materials from his wartime service.

Educator, director of the Lewis Institute in Chicago, Illinois; professional and personal correspondence, diaries, and photographs.

The George N. Carman collection includes professional and family correspondence, autobiography and related materials, diaries 1875-1880, partly concerning his student life at University of Michigan, genealogical materials, photographs, and miscellanea relating to the Lewis Institute.

Correspondence, personal account books, reports, military orders, student notebooks (U.S. Military Academy and Johns Hopkins University), notes and other material largely related to his scientific interests, particularly in telegraphy and trans-oceanic cables; also diaries kept while a West Point cadet, one of which contains a family history and autobiography; Ph.D. thesis in physics from Johns Hopkins University; and photographs.

The George Owen Squier papers include correspondence, personal account books, reports, military orders, student notebooks (U.S. Military Academy and Johns Hopkins University), notes and other material largely related to his scientific interests, particularly in telegraphy and trans-oceanic cables; diaries kept while a West Point cadet, one of which contains a family history and autobiography; Squier's Ph.D. thesis in physics from Johns Hopkins University; and photographs.

The Squier collection has been arranged into the following series: Correspondence; Inventions and Research; Military Career; Miscellaneous / Personal; and Education (West Point and Johns Hopkins).

University of Michigan staff photographer, 1913-1947 and commercial photographer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Collection includes some manuscript material but is primarily photographic prints and negatives made by Swain. Photo subjects include university buildings, faculty, and student activities, archeological expeditions to the Near East and, Ann Arbor scenes and landscapes form his travels in the western United States and Canada.

The papers and photographs of George R. Swain mainly document Swain's accomplishments as university photographer at the University of Michigan from 1913 to 1947. Researchers should note, however, that this is only a sampling of the photographer's work during these years. The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan has an extensive collection of Swain's archaeological negatives and prints, and researchers interested in his full career will want to also look at the Kelsey collection. The Bentley Library material, while including several folders of fine photographs Swain made on his travels with Professor Frances Kelsey, for the most part documents Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.

The collection at the Bentley Library consists of three series: Miscellaneous Papers; Photographers Log; and Photographs (prints; negatives; and lantern slides. Since the bulk of the collection is comprised of early twentieth century images of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, the materials will be of most interest to researchers searching for visual documentation of this part of the state in that time period. There are very few materials beyond the visual, although the lengthy captions attached to many overseas images and the essays, diaries, and letters, are extremely interesting and offer insight into how Swain approached his craft, both as a professional photographer and in his personal work.
