Belle Danforth student map composition book, 1891

Belle D. Danforth compiled geography exercises in this composition notebook during 1891, when she was approximately thirteen years old. The volume principally focuses on the United States but also includes entries relating to Africa, Asia, and North America. Belle Danforth's exercises provide information on a standard list of topics, including details on the location, the "race of man" to be found in the area, native animals, vegetable life, resources, industries, productions, cities, countries and capitals, and government. However, Danforth did not always include answers for each in her entries, in particular only noting racial groups when writing about larger regions. She also included a hand-drawn map of the area with descriptive text relating to boundaries, bays and gulfs, capes, mountains, rivers, lakes, and cities.

This volume contains 21 compositions by 12 students (eight girls and four boys) of Biddeford High School, Maine, between 1850 and 1851 (approx. 90 pages). These "prize compositions" pertain to subjects such as nature, morality, happiness, music, comparisons between the country as it was versus how it is now, industry, and intemperance.

The volume concludes with a one-page letter of thanks from Biddeford High School principal Horace Piper to his students, September 10, 1859, thanking them for the gift of a chair; and a two-page letter from the "Ladies [of] Biddeford" to the Triumph Engine Company (fire brigade), presenting them with an American flag.

Delia Campbell Chapin family papers, 1829-1905, 1931-1936 (majority within 1847-1889)

This collection is made up of 240 letters, diaries, compositions, and other papers of the Delia Campbell Chapin family of Mansfield City, Connecticut, and Brooklyn, New York, dating largely between 1864 and 1889. The correspondence is largely incoming letters to Delia Campbell Chapin and her sister Eugenie Campbell from family members including Susie McCall Cushman, Gilbert Warren Chapin, and Sarah Gertrude Storrs. Later letters (1931-1936) were primarily addressed to Delia's daughter-in-law Avelina Chapin. Other papers include diaries of Eugenie and her mother Cynthia Storrs Campbell, penmanship and commonplace books, library catalogs from the South Mansfield Sunday School Library, a manuscript version of the Authors card game, school papers, and printed advertisements, visiting cards, invitations, and other ephemeral items.

This collection is made up of correspondence, diaries, compositions, documents, printed materials, and other papers pertaining to the Delia Campbell Chapin family of Mansfield Center, Connecticut, and Brooklyn, New York. The papers date from October 19, 1829, to August 31, 1936, with the bulk of the collection falling between September 26, 1864, and May 5, 1889.

The 240-item collection contains 110 letters, 15 diaries and compositions, two cabinet card photograph portraits of unidentified subjects, 46 documents and other manuscript materials (including notes, school exercises, recipes, lists, receipts, library catalogs, and the constitution and by-laws of two organizations of which Delia and Eugenie were members), 55 printed items (including visiting cards, printed invitations, advertisements, leaflets, booklets, and other ephemeral items), and 12 empty envelopes.

The bulk of the letters were addressed to Delia Campbell Chapin and her sister, Eugenie Campbell, from relations including Delia's husband Gilbert W. Chapin and maternal first cousins Susan McCall Cushman and Sarah Gertrude "Gertie" Storrs. The correspondence between July 6, 1931, and August 31, 1936, is primarily addressed to Avelina Parent Chapin, Delia and Gilbert's daughter-in-law and wife of Warren Storrs Chapin.

Selected examples from the collection include:
  • Three catalogs of books received by the South Mansfield Sunday School Library: two from October 1865 and one from July 1872.
  • A bundle of 102 slips of paper, each with (apparently) a book title written on them; with a hand-sewn wrapper made from the October 21, 1859, issue of the New York Times.
  • Manuscript version of Authors, an educational card game.
  • Cynthia Campbell's diary from 1838 and Eugenie Campbell's diaries from 1864, 1865, and 1866.
  • Annotated copy of The Improved Class-Book for Sunday-School Teachers' Minutes, Abridged (Philadelphia: American Sunday School Union). Handwriting on the front cover reads: "Library Register. H. B. Campbell."
  • By-laws, constitution, and minutes of the Gamma Nu Society, formed in Mansfield, Conn., in 1860 to promote public speaking and "the art of composition." Genie Campbell was a founding member and eventual chairwoman.
  • By-laws and constitution of Enterprise, a club formed by members of the 1st Congregational Church of South Mansfield--including Delia and Genie Campbell--to relieve the church of its debts.
  • Two cabinet card photographs of an unidentified man and woman produced by C. D. Fredericks and Co. of New York, New York.

Elizabeth H. Schuh ("Lizzie"), possibly of Lime Rock, Pennsylvania, kept this composition notebook as a 12-14 year-old student, between 1891 and 1893. The volume includes short essays on etiquette and behavior, nature-related topics (such as bees and oranges), natural science, and geography. A portion of the notebook focuses on forms of correspondence and financial receipts. Other essays focus on prominent figures in the history of the United States, such as Andrew Jackson, Washington Irving, and Daniel Boone.

Other essays focus on prominent figures in the history of the United States, such as Andrew Jackson, Washington Irving, and Daniel Boone.

The etiquette compositions include "How to Be Polite", with general behaviors, such as being kind and unselfish, not standing behind people writing or reading, etc. Remarks on modesty include statements such as "Do not talk about dress" and "Do not soil your tongue with slang."

Content on letter writing includes her exercises in drafting generic correspondence, notes for seeking employment, and copies of letters that she may have sent out on relationships, and management of business and the household.

The volume has color, printed covers showing three students at desks in a classroom, one writing with a dip pen; its title is "Hawthorne Composition. No. 774. 'U.S. Mail' Series", J. C. Blair Manufacturing Stationer Huntingdon, Pa. A blackboard on an easel shows a trotting horse, marked "Composition on the HORSE". The inside covers include a printed biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Whipple began studying at the Classical Institute in 1855 and began studying at Brown University in 1862. A section relating to composition includes essays on education, woolen mills, California, nighttime, Native Americans, the American Revolution, intemperance, agriculture, and "What the result will be if Fremont or Buchanan are elected." Debate answers for whether war is justified or not are also included, as well as lists of etiquette rules for church and dining.

Whipple's Brown University lecture notes cover topics on essay writing, argumentation, persuasion, style and grammar, precision, completeness, and unequivocal words.

Merline Patton composition notebook, 1903

This composition notebook was kept by Merline Patton of Alamogordo, New Mexico, while studying rhetoric at the New Mexico Baptist College (associated with the Southern Baptist Convention) in 1903. The notebook includes essays, reading passages, song lyrics, and notes on English history and literature.

The notebook includes essays, reading passages, song lyrics, and notes on English history and literature.

The essays in the notebook include "The Argonautic Expedition" and "Rhetoric." The songs include at least two college/school spirit numbers, though the bulk appear to be popular tunes about love and family, such as "My Girl from Dixie." A section titled "Division of Modern English Lit" contains information related to the Elizabethan Age, the study of Italian language and art, the study of classics translated from Greek and Roman, and more.

The inside cover contains scribbles and mathematics problems, and two small flowers were doodled in the margins.

This composition book was kept by 8–10-year-old Mildred Wood and Mary Wood while living in Illinois and Missouri. The volumes include copied song lyrics and poems, and pencil and crayon drawings. A number of pressed flowers and leaves are laid into the volume.

The song lyrics and poems focus on themes relating to nature, love, and friendship, and include titles such as "Missouri School Song," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," and "Illinois." The drawings feature flowers, houses, and a portrait of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. One outdoor scene shows two girls playing in front of a house, labelled "Living on the farm." Two pencil and crayon drawings done on tracing paper are laid into the volume: one of a ladies' boot with the name "Hamilton Brown shoe Co." on it, and another of a valentine with Cupid holding a bow and arrow.

Several entries are suggestive of schoolwork, such as sentence diagrams, a list of courts, a passage about U.S. history, a list of teachers in the Venice Public School and the average grades in their classes, and a list of the "Names of the Teachers I have had at Differ[e]nt Schools." Another passage is titled "The Japanese Fan."

Later entries were written in a different hand and consist mostly of quotations and proverbs. The word "Graduate" is printed on the cover of the volume.
