Smith, medical missionary to China, describing in part Chinese politics and civil war, 1918-1920; letters and other papers of Hazel Littlefield Smith, including materials concerning various European travels, and manuscripts of writings about Irish author Lord Dunsany, her father, and Farwell, Michigan; and photographs. Other correspondents of Hazel Smith include world-renowed scientists (Edwin Hubble and William Beebe), from Chinese Princess Der Ling, and from distinguished European writers and actors (Pierre LaMure, Selma Lagerlof, Brian Aherne, and Ronald Colman).

This collection was accumulated by Hazel Littlefield Smith and consists of materials concerning her career and interests and those of her family, specifically her husband, Dr. Dennis Smith, and her father, Josiah Littlefield (1845-1935), a pioneer lumberman and businessman in Farwell, Michigan.

The collection is particularly valuable for three topics: early days (late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries) in Farwell, Michigan; missionary life in China in the period ca. 1915-1928; and the travels and writings of Hazel Littlefield Smith. The materials include correspondence, compositions and business-related materials of Josiah Littlefield; correspondence and other materials of Dr. Dennis Smith, Hazel Littlefield Smith (and Josiah Littlefield) concerning conditions in early republican China; and correspondence and other materials of Hazel Littlefield Smith concerning her travels in Europe (1920s-1950s), her management of the family farm near Farwell, Michigan (1940s), and her essays, poetry and other publications, including Lord Dunsany: King of Dreams.

The three principal figures in the collection--Hazel Littlefield Smith, Dennis Smith and Josiah Littlefield--were highly perceptive observers of persons and events. Their letters are rich in detail, whether describing travel experiences or everyday life in rural northern Michigan.

The collection is arranged into six series: Littlefield Family, China-related materials, Hazel Littlefield Smith, Miscellanea, Dr. Dennis V. Smith, and Visual Materials.

Historical documents, family papers, and photographs accumulated and maintained by Flora Burt relating to the Burt family and to other family lines. Included are materials and information pertaining to James P. McKinstry, officer in the U.S. Navy in the 19th century, and to John R. Williams, 1st mayor of Detroit. The collection also contains letters, 1839-1846, to William A. Burt from his son Alvin Burt, then doing survey work in Iowa; also letter, 1845, from William Burt to Alvin Burt, describing the solar compass that he patented.

The Ann Arbor Chapter of the Polish American Congress was established in 1970 as an independent chapter of Michigan Division of the Polish American Congress. Its mission is to interact in the community through civic, social, cultural and educational initiatives to promote Polish ancestry and increase other cultures' understanding of Polish people. The collection includes constitution and by-laws, minutes of annual meetings and executive board meetings, committee records, annual and treasurer reports, correspondence, topical files, members materials, newsletters, announcements, and photographs.

The Polish American Congress, Ann Arbor Chapter (PACAAC or PAC AAC) records include constitution and by-laws, minutes of annual meetings and executive board meetings, committee records, annual and treasurer reports, correspondence, topical files, members materials, newsletters, announcements, and photographs.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, apartment building for senior citizens of modest means; records of Senior Citizens Housing of Ann Arbor, the organization administering Lurie Terrace, including board minutes, office files, newsletters, and photograph albums and scrapbooks.

The Lurie Terrace records include documentation from Senior Citizens Housing of Ann Arbor, the organization responsible for the building, funding, and administration of the apartment building. Most important of these records are minute books of the organization's board of directors. The Office Topical Files are materials of Shata Ling who was instrumental in the building and operation and management of Lurie Terrace. These files include history and background information, biographical information about Ling, and documentation of Lurie Terrace's various anniversary celebrations. The Newsletters provide a complete perspective on the life and activities of the residents of the building. Within the scrapbooks, most them compiled by individual residents, the researcher will find photographs of group activities, holiday events, and individual informal photos of residents.

The Homer Ferguson collection has been divided into eleven series based primarily upon the important phases of his public life: Personal; Circuit Judgeship; Senate Career; Interregnum: November 1954 - April 1955; Hoover Commission; Philippine Ambassadorship; United States Court of Military Appeals; Inter-Parliamentary Union; Photographs, Sound Recordings, and Myrtle Ferguson Papers.

Battle Creek attorney, justice, later chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. Correspondence, clippings, speeches, and topical files relating primarily to the ceremonial, out-of-court, responsibilities of a supreme court justice, and to her election campaigns in 1971 and 1980; also files concerning her interest in juvenile justice and the reapportionment of the Michigan Legislature and miscellaneous photographs.

The Mary S. Coleman Collection is arranged by series or topic: Biographical/Personal; Correspondence; Miscellaneous Topical File; Speeches; Supreme Court Topical Files; Miscellaneous; and Visual Materials. While a portion of the collection contains pre-1972 material, the bulk concerns the 1972-1982 period during which Judge Coleman served on the Michigan Supreme Court.

Professor of speech communication and theatre at the University of Michigan. Correspondence and other materials relating in part to his interest in university theatre productions.

The William P. Halstead papers consist of correspondence, clippings, theater programs and other materials relating to his work in the Speech Department and to his interest in university theater productions. (Halstead bound most of his papers in chronological order. The bound volumes and additional unbound materials are separated into five series: Personal, Production Materials, University of Michigan, Department of Speech, Miscellaneous, and Photographs.

The Inter-Cooperative Council at Ann Arbor is an organization established to coordinate the activities of cooperative houses founded and operated by University of Michigan students. Their records are comprised of minutes, office files, and newsletters, as well as organization-level topices and related research. The collection also contains records of student cooperative, the Socialist House.

The records of the ICC at Ann Arbor cover the years 1932 to 2012 and are divided into ten series: Minutes, Office Files, Printed Materials, Events and Programs, Organizational Topical Files, Correspondence Files, Collected Research Materials, House Records, External Organizations, and Audio-Visual Materials.

Researchers should note that because of the differences between ICC office organizational systems and the individual processing archivists working on the collection, topics and materials might be found in multiple series.

The Edward Mill Collection is divided into seven series: Personal; Academic Papers; Correspondence; Far Eastern Materials; Topical File (largely correspondence); Visual Materials; and Microfilmed materials.

The Easlick collection consists of materials relating to his service in World War I with the U.S. Army Ambulance Service Section 591, including copies of Le Jubicourt Matin, a journal of the reminiscences of the men of Unit #591, bulletins, a photograph album and miscellaneous correspondence and directories. Other materials in the collection include speeches, correspondence, and miscellanea relating to his career in children's dentistry. The collection concludes with a presentation volume of remembrances received upon his retirement in 1961, a volume of remembrances received from his students in 1964, and letters of condolence.

Political activist, concert pianist, sister-in-law of Eleanor Roosevelt. Biographical materials; correspondence with politicians, musical figures and other dignitaries; also personal materials concerning her concert career, her campaign for Congress in 1942, notably a journal of her daughters' trip to Europe in 1949; and photographs.

The papers of Dorothy Kemp Roosevelt relate to her political and social interests and activities. The collection is divided into three series: Biographical materials, Correspondence, and Personal.

Civil servant with Chinese Maritime Customs Service, later professor of Far Eastern art at the University of Michigan. Letters to his mother describing his experiences in China, other related papers, and photographs from his years in China.

The Plumer collection has been arranged into the following series: Letters to his mother from China; Other Materials; and Photographs. The letters to his mother are bound together in seven volumes with occasional descriptive photographs. The letters describe his experiences in Nanking, Manchuria, Shanghai, and Hankow, and his vacation trip to India in 1928. Also included are typescripts of selective letters. The Photographs series consists of people, buildings, and views in China, especially in Nanking and Manchuria. There are also photos of visits to Hong Kong, India, Japan, and the Philippines.

Correspondent with the Detroit News, director of the Psychological Warfare Division, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Forces, during World War II. Scrapbooks with clippings of newspaper articles; copies of propaganda leaflets directed to German soldiers and civilians during the war; reports, correspondence with family, and printed matter relating to war-time service; and photographs.

The Russell Barnes papers span the years 1920-1978. The bulk of the material concerns the period 1941-1953, the years Barnes spent as foreign correspondent for the Detroit News and the three-year interval during which he served in the Office of War Information.

The collection consists primarily of scrapbooks of his news stories, OWT leaflets, collected propaganda, and letters which he sent to his wife Constance, and, less frequently, to his children, Jeannot (Lucie Jeanne) and Jamie (John James Ingalls) while overseas and in New York. The most detailed description of his professional activities can be found in the letters he wrote during the months at the OWI in New York. He discusses the OWI personnel, its reorganization and the conflict with the OSS. The letters from the OWI Cairo and Algiers contain lively discussions of local customs and the rigors of life there, but are constrained by war-time censorship and thus shed less light than might be expected on his role as PWB director. The letters written while he covered the U.N. sometimes reflect the tense atmosphere there and the pressure brought to bear upon newsmen to take a stand on the issues they report. Barnes also discusses the power struggle in the Detroit Foreign Policy Association.

Notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China, and other materials relating to his work with the War Production Board during World War II, his architectural projects and inventions; and photographs.

The Youtz papers consist of notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China. Other papers include materials relating to his work with the War Production Board during World War II, his architectural projects and inventions, and photographs. The papers are arranged into three series: Biographical/Personal; Career Materials; and Published Materials.

Soldier from Cudahy, Wisconsin; master engineer with 1st Battalion, 310th U.S. Engineers who served in the Allied intervention in Russia, 1918-1919, the "Polar Bear Expedition." Collection includes correspondence, reports, clippings, and photograph album.

Correspondence describing his activities in Russia, brief letter from Robert La Follette regarding his opposition to the intervention, final report of the 310th Engineers (incomplete), and news clippings. Photograph album includes photos of scenes in Archangel and surrounding countryside, American soldiers in camp and in the field, fortifications and buildings constructed by the 310th Engineers, Russian people, Allied ships.

Correspondence and other papers concerning his interest in birds, his activities with the Wilson Ornithological Club, and his scientific expeditions to Indochina and British Honduras in the late Twenties; and papers on student life at Harvard University, 1922-1925; also photographs.

The Josselyn Van Tyne papers consist of correspondence and other papers concerning his interest in birds, his activities with the Wilson Ornithological Club, and his scientific expeditions to Indochina and British Honduras in the late Twenties; and papers on student life at Harvard University, 1922-1925 and photographs. The collection is arranged into the following series: Correspondence; Other Materials; and Photographs. Correspondents in the collection include Thomas Barbour, Alfred B. Connable, Harold J. Coolidge, Lee R. Dice, Frederick M. Gaige, Harry G. Kipke, David Rockefeller, and Norman A. Wood.

The Photographs are of scientific expeditions to Indochina (1928-1930), Texas (1928-1935), British Honduras and Guatemala (1931), Yucatan, Mexico (1936), and Bylot Island, Northwest Territories, Canada (1950s). The photos include local populations and scenery as well as activities of expedition members. The Guatemala and Yucatan expeditions files contain photos of Mayan ruins, especially Chichén Itzá.
