Scope and Content:

Album of photographs taken at Camp Custer, showing classroom scenes and other aspects of camp life, panoramic views of grounds and structures, and portraits and photographs of soldiers; also portraits of members of the Springer and Lazelle families.

Biographical / Historical:

Durand William Springer was born in Durand, Wisconsin on August 9, 1866. He graduated from Albion College in Albion, Mich. While at Albion, Springer was a student football coach. After graduating from Albion College, Springer took a number of positions at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Springer taught the first three courses in Accounting offered by the University.

After brief administrative tenures at the Albion College and at the Cleary Business College in Ypsilanti, Mich., in 1893, Springer became the Ann Arbor High School Principal. He held this post until 1909, when he went to organize the Detroit High School of Commerce, becoming its first director. In 1912, Springer became the Principal of the Ann Arbor High School once again, and served until 1913. Between 1913 and 1917, Springer held the elected position of Secretary of the National Education Association.

During World War I, Springer was the Educational Director of the Y.M.C.A. at Camp Custer, Michigan, then the Educational Director for the Central War Department with headquarters in Chicago.

Springer was mrried to Harriet (Lazalle) Springer. He died on May 18, 1943 in Ann Arbor.
