Virginia Nordby was a lawyer and University of Michigan administrator with positions as director of the Office of Affirmative Action, policy advisor to the president, university freedom of information officer, associate vice-president for government relations and associate vice-president for student affairs. In addition to her duties at the University, she served as a consultant for the Michigan Women's Task Force on Rape, and served as the pricipal drafter of the Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct Act of 1974. Her work largely focused on affirmative action, Title IX and equality for women in college sports, and addressing sexual violence on campus. This collection includes Nordby's files from her time as policy coordinator, her research topical files, other professional files, and photographs. Also included are files relating to the formulation of the university's student discriminatory policy and to her work as consultant to the Michigan Women's Task Force on Rape.

The Virginia Nordby Papers (1972-1992) document the professional activities of Virginia Nordby during her tenure as a University of Michigan administrator and Law School lecturer. The papers have been divided into three principal series: University Policy and Affirmative Action, Topical Files, and Professional Files.

Series one, University Policy and Affirmative Action contains files relating to Nordby's work for the University of Michigan, including research and policy proposals regarding the student code of conduct, faculty and staff policies, and student affairs. Series two contains Nordby's topical research files relating to her university work and other professional work, namely student discriminatory policy, Title IX and Athletics, and Labor issues. Series three, Professional Files, contains files related to Nordby's legal work, consulting, and speeches given outside of her capacity as a University of Michigan administrator.

Researchers should note that the language used in the collection and finding aid surrounding sexual violence reflects the language in use during Virginia Nordby's career. Some of the language in the descriptive notes has been updated to include currently accepted terminology in 2023. All folder titles in this collection are original, and reflect the language in use during Nordby's career. Original folder titles may include outdated or harmful descriptive language. Original folder titles have been maintained to preserve the original context of how the creator labeled their files.

University Policy and Affirmative Action, 1974-1990

The University Policy and Affirmative Action series contains materials created and collected by and for Nordby while she served as a policy advisor to the university's administration and as director of the university's Affirmative Action Office. The series is arranged in the order in which it was originally kept by Nordby and her file folder headings have been retained. Although the headings might not indicate it, most of the materials pertain to proposed changes, additions and deletions to, and clarifications of, the Regent's Bylaws.

This record group includes materials documenting the administration of the club, their promotional materials and events, and historical records of their by-laws, membership rolls, and activities between 1960 and 2019.

The University Women's Golf Club (University of Michigan) record group is comprised of materials largely documenting the administrative and promotional activities of the club. The bulk of the materials are club board meeting minutes, promotional and event materials, and membership documents, including by-laws and rulebooks. Also included are materials from the club's history, and interviews with founding members of the club.

This collection contains correspondence, diaries, ephemera, photographs, and other material related to Vashti Detwiler Garwood, a schoolteacher and physician in Ohio, Massachusetts, Kansas, and Michigan. The collection documents her experiences teaching school in Ohio and Massachusetts, as well as her coursework at the Boston University School of Medicine. Also included are additional photographs of her family and a published history of the Novy-Garwood families.

This collection (0.5 linear feet) contains correspondence, diaries, ephemera, photographs, and other material related to Vashti Detwiler Garwood. The material documents her experiences teaching school in Ohio and Massachusetts, as well as her coursework at the Boston University School of Medicine. Also included are additional photographs of her family and a published history of the Novy and Garwood families.

The Correspondence series is comprised of 16 personal letters between members of the Cannon family of Pennsylvania and members of the Detwiler and Garwood families. The Cannon siblings wrote and received three letters between 1862 and 1864, sharing recent news such as local deaths. Isaiah Cannon also informed his brother, D. H. Cannon, of his intention to enlist in the Union Army (February 1, 1864).

The remaining 13 letters relate to Vashti Detwiler Garwood, including several from her mother-in-law, Angeline Garwood (1805-1881), who reported family news from Lewisburg, Ohio. Vashti received a letter from Spencer Willard Garwood, her future husband, written while he served in the 132nd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War; he provided some of his impressions of the South and shared updates about his regiment (July 7, 1864). In one late letter, W. H. Berkey, editor of the Vigilant, responded to her letter concerning conditions within the Cassopolis Jail in Cassopolis, Michigan; the Women's Christian Temperance Union believed Garwood's previously printed letter a fraud, though a clipping attached to the letter respects the Vigilant's verification of her identity (September 19, 1896).

Vashti Detwiler Garwood kept 5 Diaries and Journals between 1858 and 1868, most of which concern her experiences as a schoolteacher in Ohio and Massachusetts, as well as the early years of her married life in Fort Scott, Kansas. She wrote sporadically until the fall of 1864, when she began composing entries more frequently. Some of the journals document overlapping periods of time. Along with her experiences, she often recorded her thoughts and emotions, frequently related to her religious beliefs and her relationships. Her small pocket journal, kept throughout 1860, also contains quotations, algebra problems, and financial accounts. One late, undated entry in the journal, written between January 1, 1859, and December 31, 1864, is a lament composed after her failed attempt to win admission to Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Her final journal, kept between January 2, 1865, and September 8, 1868, occasionally refers to military developments during the Civil War, and contains a brief allusion to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln (April 15, 1865). The series also holds a typescript of diary entries written between January 16, 1864, and September 27, 1864, made from a diary in the collection.

The Writings are 4 jokes and humorous anecdotes, including 1 referencing Native Americans; 6 poems, often sentimental in nature; a list of quotations and a set of notes; an 8-page lesson on "The Rainbow," composed in a question-and-answer format; and 2 essays on writing compositions, totaling around 3 and a half pages. One of the latter compositions is signed by Vashti Detwiler Garwood.

The first subseries of Documents and Ephemera holds items related to Vashti Detwiler Garwood's studies at the Boston University School of Medicine between 1880 and 1881, including tickets verifying her membership in the class and permission to attend lectures, an order of lectures for 1880-1881, 2 commencement tickets, and several items attesting to her successful completion of individual courses. Other material includes a printed circular addressed to students, which states the faculty's commitment to the fair treatment of women (February 5, 1882); tuition receipts; and an event program, printed in Latin. Other Documents and Ephemera are three manuscript slips attesting to Hiram Garwood's good conduct in school, funeral notices, invitations, and 3 printed, colorful cards presented to Martha and Vashti Detwiler as "reward[s] of merit."

The Recipes series (5 items) contains several recipes, including 2 individual items and a three-page sheet containing many recipes, a fragment from a food-related account, and a bill of fare.

Visual Material (22 items) includes photographic portraits and snapshots of members of the Detwiler and Garwood families, both identified and anonymous; a photograph of President James A. Garfield; a postcard depicting the University of Michigan's 1908 commencement exercises, with Vashti Detwiler Garwood marked; and a colored illustration of a woman. The collection also contains a cased ambrotype portrait of Christian Detwiler and Vashti, his daughter, taken in the fall of 1853, and a bound "Souvenir of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania" containing several views of the town.

Printed Material (22 items) consists of 16 newspaper clippings, most of which contain poetry or recipes; an educational pamphlet entitled The Family Bible Teacher, number 18 in a series; a newsletter from the Greenwich Academy, which mentions an upcoming visit by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; 1 of Vashti Detwiler Garwood’s calling cards; and 2 small cards printed with memory- and friendship-themed mottos.

Also included is a copy of the Novy-Garwood Family Record and Connections, a book published in 1990.

Artifacts include a leather wallet purchased by Christian Detwiler in 1827, a circular wooden box, a paper doll, and several outfits for the doll.

The collection also holds 6 pages of Genealogy notes.

The Office of the Vice President for Communications, immediately under the President's Office, acts as the official voice of the University of Michigan. The Office is divided up into six units: Director of Communications Administration and Policy and Chief Freedom of Information Officer, Executive Writer and Communications Counsel, Media Relations and Public Affairs, News Services, Marketing Communications, and Michigan Public Media. All together, these units provide information to the public about the events, programs, policies, and decisions created by University administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni. Includes miscellaneous brochures, directories, newsletters, organizational charts, reports, and statistics of the Vice-President for Development and the Office of University Relations and Development; also includes brochures and newsletters from the various financial campaigns such as the Campaign for Michigan-A Heritage for Leadership, the Annual Giving Program, and the Campaign for Michigan.

The University of Michigan. Vice President for Development Publications (5 linear feet) include annual reports, brochures, directories, ephemera including flyers, invitations, posters, and programs, histories, manuals, newsletters, and reports. These publications are divided into three series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Major Campaign Publications. The bulk of the publications document the day-to-day activities of the Development Office. Researchers will also find publications detailing the Development Council, the Michigan Alumni Fund, Office of Trusts and Bequests, the Presidential Societies, and major capital campaigns, including the $55 Million Program to Ensure the Vital Margin, a Heritage of Leadership: Campaign for Michigan, the Campaign for Michigan, and the Michigan Difference.

Records of University of Michigan office (and its predecessor administrative offices) responsible for external fund raising and development activities, including subject files of development officials Arthur Brandon, Lyle Nelson, and Michael Radock; staff files; and photographs.

The records of the Vice President for Development date from 1948 to the present and measure 39.5 linear feet. They reflect the basic concerns of the office for these four decades: preserving and improving the university's public image and planning major fundraising efforts. Unfortunately, both activities are incompletely documented. In the area of public relations the records tend to discuss how immediate problems will be dealt with, rather than overall conceptions of the university's image. The thought behind the innovative fundraising devices created or employed by the office is sometimes recorded through consultant reports, but in general is not well documented.

The manuscript records have been divided into two subgroups, one representing the records of the vice president (or senior staff person, for those years in which there was no vice presidency), the other containing records created by the development office. The Vice Presidents subgroup has been divided by the name of each person who has held the office: Arthur Brandon, Lyle Nelson, and Michael Radock. Researchers should note that since Nelson and Radock used their predecessor's files for some time before inaugurating their own records, the relationship between office tenure and file dates is not an exact one. The Development Office subgroup contains records of that office and its subsidiary units. Several accessions of Development Office records received in 1989 and 1990 have been grouped together as Development Office subgroup: 1989-1990 accessions.

Michael Radock, 1960-1983

The Michael Radock series (1960-1983) is the most complex in arrangement. The Radock series has three chronological divisions: 1960-1964 (primarily 1962-1963), 1963-1980 (primarily 1964-1976), and 1973-1983 (primarily 1977-1981). The first two divisions are arranged alphabetically by topic, as were the previous files. The first, 1960-1964, is very small, and is of interest primarily for information on the Sigma Nu controversy. Sigma Nu was a local fraternity that came under fire in Ann Arbor because of a provision in the organization's national charter banning Blacks from membership.

The second, 1963-1980, is of interest in terms of the $55 Million Campaign (the last heading in the series), the Black Action Movement (BAM) and the BAM strike, and radio stations WUOM and WCBN. There is also incomplete information about protests regarding the appearance of George Lincoln Rockwell, leader of the American Nazi Party, at the University of Michigan in 1964. Beyond the campus, Radock was an active participant in professional organizations, particularly the American College Public Relations Association (ACPRA), of which he was president. This series contains extensive information about ACPRA and about its merger with the American Alumni Council, which resulted in the formation of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

University of Michigan administrative office, established as the Dean of Student Affairs in 1921, responsible for overseeing many aspects of non-academic student services and activities including at various times: counseling, financial aid, student housing, student activities and organizations, health services, student discipline, and fraternities and sororities. Records provide extensive documentation of student life.

The records of the Vice President for Student Life provide a unique perspective to the extracurricular life and customs of students at the University of Michigan and an insight to the development of the Office of the Vice President. The records span the years 1908-2014 with the bulk of the material covering 1941-2009. The material from the early years is especially rich in documenting student life from the 1920s to the 1950s. The strongest feature of this collection is in documenting the administration's response to the needs and to the demands of student, ranging from disciplining drinkers during Prohibition, dealings with fraternities up to 1960, reacting to student protests in the 1960s to the 1988 debate over the Student Code for Non-Academic Conduct, and the 2000 protest against Michigamua. The records also contain materials related to students' health, housing, organizations, and activism. The coverage of these areas varies across administrations as office reorganizations altered the focus and functions of Student Services.

This uneven documentation reflects the fact that, over time, different offices were created to handle more narrowly-defined areas of responsibility. Areas which had originally been handled by Dean Bursley under his broad conception of control over non-academic student life came to be administered by separate offices. Frequently the records of these administrative units were not included with the Vice President for Student Life records. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of student life, as refracted through the lens of University Administration, one should also refer to the records of the Housing Office and Student-Community Relations Office, and the papers of Peter Ostafin, director of housing.

The Vice President for Student Life collection consists of correspondence, reports, memos, minutes, photographs, policy decisions, and financial reports generated by both the University Administration and students. These materials are arranged in chronological series by the administrative head in charge of students' extracurricular affairs. Nine series represent records of Vice Presidents of the office: Joseph A. Bursley, 1913-1950; Erich A. Walter, 1925-1959; James A. Lewis, 1908-1964; Richard L. Cutler, 1950-1969; Barbara W. Newell, 1965-1970; Robert L. Knauss, 1962-1973; Henry Johnson, 1950-1985; Mary Ann Swain and Maureen Hartford, 1990-2005; and E. Royster Harper, 1983-2014. In addition, the collections includes a Topical Files series, 1953-1995 (records of several Vice Presidents that have been received by the Bentley in various accessions); as well as a Printed Materials series. Some intellectual reorganization of the materials was undertaken to best enable researchers to trace the changing nature of student body concerns and the development of the office itself.

The researcher should note that the strict chronological sequencing of the series was not possible. This was due in large part to a series of office reorganizations which resulted in some files created during Bursley or Walter's tenure ending up in later series. The most significant move here resulted in Lewis' series containing a good deal of Bursley and Walter materials on fraternities and student organizations. Lewis created the fraternities subseries in 1959 and compiled the student organization subseries during a May 1963, office reorganization. The researcher should also be conscious that early series contain a variety of materials which may not reflect the full scope of Bursley, Walter, or Lewis' responsibilities. Gaps are also discernible in the later series, but these are more readily fleshed out by referring to other University collections.

Henry Johnson, Vice-President of Student Services, 1950-1985 (majority within 1972-1985)

The Henry Johnson series was received in several accessions. The bulk of the files are from Johnson's tenure, but there are files from his predecessors dating back to 1950. The Henry Johnson series is divided into two subseries: Annual Files, 1972/73-1985 and a Topical File covering approximately the same years.

Annual Files, 1972-1985

This Annual Files is arranged by academic year, 1972-1973 to 1984-1985 and thereunder alphabetically. This format closely conforms to the original order of Johnson's materials. The researcher should be aware that the annual files are of uneven depth and breadth. As the annual files tend to contain materials spanning several years, the unevenness of amounts of materials is smoothed. Recurrent themes in Johnson's files include: Housing, Health Services, Counseling, Student Government, Michigan Union, University Activities Center, Career Planning and Placement, Disabled Student Services and Minority Affairs. These last two fields reflect the office's capacity for expansion to provide an enduring institutional framework within which to advance the interests and needs of special categories of students. Johnson's notes on the Executive Officers minutes provide an interesting insight into the dynamics of these meetings.

The office of the Vice Provost for Academic and Multicultural Affairs was originally established to develop and support programs to aid the University of Michigan in the recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff of color. The scope of the duties of the office were later expanded to include administrative oversight of a number of programs and services for faculty and students. The bulk of the record group is comprised of topical files related to multicultural issues, correspondence and reports relating to particular initiatives and funding programs, and administrative office files.

The records of the Vice Provost for Academic and Multicultural Affairs document the activities and functions of the office from its creation in 1987 through 2000. The record group has been received in increments over the years, with some overlap in content between different accessions; the researcher may want to consult the files in multiple accessions to ensure receiving the most complete account of a particular subject. Some scattered records predating the formal establishment of the office are present in the early accessions. The record group consists of records of Vice Provost Charles D. Moody, Sr. and Lester Monts relating to work of the Office; series concern relations of office with outside organizations as well as activities within the university. It also includes administrative files, chronological files, and files on units reporting to the Office such as Military Officer Education Programs and Undergraduate Admissions.

While the earlier accessions mainly concern the vice provost's involvement in multicultural affairs, later accessions include information on the office's broader academic affairs responsibilities, including administrative oversight of various student academic services. It should be noted that, for the most part, folder headings assigned by the vice provost's office have been retained, and reflect the use of terms such as "African Americans," "Blacks," "Hispanics," and "Latinos" by the office.
