This collection of Michigan-based trade catalogs dates from the 1870s and continues to the present. The collection is arranged alphabetically by broad product classification, for example agricultural machinery, furniture, etc. Within each category, the catalogs have been arranged alphabetically by the name of the company, and then chronologically. The researcher should note that there is a separate finding aid for the library's collection of commercial catalogs for automobiles and motor trucks.

Records of the School of Social Work (formerly the Institute of Social Work) include minutes, correspondence, curriculum records, and topical files, concerning the activities of the University's social work program under the direction of Robert Kelso, Arthur Dunham, Federle Fauri, Phillip Fellin, Harold R. Johnson, and Paula Allen-Meares.

The records document the founding and development of the School of Social Work from its inception as the Institute of Health and Social Sciences (later renamed as Institute of Public and Social Administration) in 1935, to its subsequent reorganization as the School of Social Work in 1951. The proposed merger with Wayne State University in 1950 is also well documented. The strength of this record group consists of 59 years of minutes (1935-1994), which include proceedings from executive, faculty, and curriculum committees.

Committee Files and Minutes, 1935-1994

The Committee Files and Minutes, 1935-1994, are arranged alphabetically by committee name. Administrative/Executive Committee minutes are extant for the years 1957-1968. They address issues of student performance and evaluation, and as such are restricted for a period of 75 years from the date of creation. Continuing Education and Extension Committee was one of several small committees established in the mid-1970s to revise and restructure the social work curriculum. Coordinating Committee minutes, 1953-1960, deal with the funding, budget approval, and coordination of an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in social work and social sciences. Curriculum Committee, 1951-1957 and 1970-1980, address personnel decisions, structural reorganization, and program revision. Executive Committee minutes and supporting material from the years 1945-1987 document major administrative and policy issues facing the school including the proposed merger/reorganization talks between Wayne State University and the University of Michigan social work programs. Faculty Advisory Committee minutes are available for the years 1968-1969, and document efforts to incorporate student involvement in departmental decisions and facilitate better student and faculty relations.

Faculty Committee minutes are the most abundant in the series and cover the years 1935-1974. They are indexed, although indexes for the later years are somewhat less thorough than those of the earlier years. Topics such as enrollment, admissions, curriculum, and budgets are discussed. Faculty Council minutes, 1969-1983, primarily focus on grading practices and faculty awards and promotions. Faculty Search Committee minutes, 1971-1981, concern efforts to fill various faculty positions within the School. They are restricted for 30 years from the date of creation. Governance Review Committee minutes, 1969-1973, and Governing Faculty Committee minutes, 1974-1991, document efforts to adopt departmental regulations and establish admission criteria and course descriptions. The Governance Review Committee served in an advisory capacity to the dean, whereas the Governing Faculty Committee served the broader faculty.

The Committee on Student Discipline records document how the University of Michigan set non-academic student policy and how it enforced those policies during the early and mid twentieth century. The collection includes records created by the Committee on Student Discipline, the Subcommittee on Student Discipline, the Committee on Student Conduct, and the Joint Judiciary Council, and contains records from individual student cases and correspondence dealing with university policy.

The Committee on Student Discipline records measure 4.75 linear feet and range from 1914-1961, the bulk of which spans 1922-1961. This collection is arranged in two series: Student Discipline Committees and Approved Social Events.

F. M. Goodhue was an early member of Commonwealth Colony in New Llano, Louisiana, and an official of Commonwealth College, a cooperative, democratic labor school in Mena, Arkansas, founded in 1923 by Kate Richards O'Hare and William E. Zeuch. The papers include correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, and an extensive typescript by Goodhue on the history of the Colony and the College. They document the early years of the College, dissension among the faculty over the sexual conduct of students, a student strike, and dissolution and sale of the College in 1940-41.

The F.M. Goodhue collection consists of one letter, typescripts, and notes by F.M. Goodhue; one letter by Lucien Koch, and clippings. The materials concern the history of Commonwealth Colony, New Llano, La., and Commonwealth College, Mena, Ark, the schism between the two, the conditions at the College, and the leadership of the College.

The University of Michigan's Communicative Disorders Clinic was one of the first programs in communications disorders in the United States. The clinic administers a wide range of speech-language and audiology services to children and adults. One program of the clinic was the Shady Trails Camp, a summer overnight camp for youths suffering from a range of communications disorders which had been started in 1932 by John Clancy. The records are predominantly administrative files of the Communicative Disorders Clinic and of Shady Trails Camp and are divided into two series: Administrative File and Shady Trails Camp. Includes photographs of Shady Trails campers, staff and activities.

The records of the Communicative Disorders Clinic are predominantly administrative files of the clinic and of Shady Trails Camp. The record group came to the archives in two accessions. The material received in 1996 is in the Administrative Files series. A second series, Shady Trails Camp Files, was created from the material received in 1997. A small amount of material from the 1996 accession was interfiled into the Shady Trails Camp Files series.

The Conant Family papers trace several generations of the Conant family in Van Buren Township, Wayne County and Salem Township, Washtenaw County. The Constance Cumbey collection consists of her publications, research files and other material related to her investigations of alleged connections between New Age cults and the New World Order and various politicians, organizations and institutions. There are also files documenting her interest in Christian fundamentalism and prominent evangelists and their ties to cults. The collection has been divided into three series: Topical Files (three subseries), Personal Files, and Other Media.

Cornelia G. Kennedy, "First Lady of the Michigan Judiciary," was the first woman appointed to the federal bench in Michigan and the first woman to become a chief judge for a United States District Court. Judge Kennedy was nominated to U.S. District Court in 1970 and to U.S. Circuit Court (Federal Appeals Court) in 1979. Although never actually nominated to the Supreme Court, she was mentioned in connection with vacancies there during the administrations of three different U.S. Presidents. In addition to her court-related duties, the collection reflects Kennedy's service to the Judicial Conference of the U.S. and the Federal Judicial Center as well as the American Bar Association and other professional organizations. The collection also contains materials from Wayne County Circuit Court. This finding aid includes a Summary Contents List and expanded Scope and Content Note to provide a brief summary of the Federal Court System's structure and history as well as notes on some of the organizations comprising the context of a legal career that spanned more than half a century.

The Cornelia G. Kennedy papers span Kennedy's career as a judge, beginning with her election to Wayne County Circuit Court (the 3rd Judicial Circuit of Michigan, which includes the City of Detroit) in 1966. The bulk of the collection documents her service as an active federal judge, from the time of her appointment to Federal District Court in 1970 through her confirmation and service in Federal Appeals Court, until she assumed senior federal judge status in 1999.

The collection is valuable not only in that it documents the professional and some of the private life of a federal judge who achieved many 'firsts' as a woman but also for the collection's contribution to an understanding of the federal court system and the evolution of judicial ethical standards and practices, especially with respect to financial disclosure, confidentiality, and conflicts of interest.

To some extent, the history of information and communications technology during the period is also represented in the collection through its examples of different correspondence media in different eras and through materials pertaining to the advent of computer-aided legal research in court libraries and the use of new technologies in federal courtrooms.

Inevitably, Judge Kennedy's long family history in the practice of law coincided with significant milestones in American history and in the development of judicial administration organizations and policy. Kennedy's father had graduated from law school and begun his legal career with World War I on the horizon. Kennedy graduated from law school as the national economy was transforming itself after World War II, and as the federal court system was beginning a new era in judicial practice and in judicial review of administration.

This collection is divided into ten series: Personal and Biographical; Correspondence; Speeches and Writings; Wayne County Circuit Court; U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan; U.S. Court of Appeals, 6th Circuit; Judicial Conference of the United States; Federal Judicial Center; American Bar Association; and Other Professional Organizations and Meetings.

Of necessity, some series include materials of multiple formats, located together primarily with regard to conceptual content rather than format and some types of materials are found in multiple series. For example, correspondence can be found not only in the Correspondence series but also within court-related series to the extent that it relates to matters addressed there.

Throughout the collection, Judge Kennedy's own phrasing is used whenever possible to describe file folder contents. Some examples of her original file folders of administrative papers and office files also contain handwritten notes and have been retained in the collection to provide additional information to the researcher. These original folder labels and notations also help to illustrate the use of different terminology in different time frames.
