The International Exposition of 1867 [Paris, France]. "You can form no conception of the magnitude and splendor of the great Exhibition; it baffles the descriptive powers of the most eloquent and all I had previously read upon the subject far from prepared one for the grand and imposing reality; it is stupendous and overwhelming." Remarks on the "expensive popish paraphernalia" and "Jew items" observed at the Exhibition. A richly detailed account of the Exhibition as well as travel through France, including visits to Notre Dame, Versailles, and the Louvre. The return trip to Leipzig goes through Belgium and includes descriptions of sites in the German cities of Weimar, Cologne, Eisenach, and Saxony.

Condolences for the loss of Susie's daughter, Belle. Accounts of travel through Czechoslovakia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. Remarks that, while in Vatican City during Holy Week, "[she] witness[ed] the imposing and absurd ceremonies of Popery . . . I am more opposed to this miserable, degrading faith after what I have seen and heard of its workings in Italy, than I ever was before." Notes a visit with the "American sculptor, Mr. [Joseph] Mozier" while in Rome. Letter is written on United States Consulate "Leipsic" stationery.

Regard for their ongoing friendship formed as young girls while attending school in Cincinnati. Remarks on the impending departure to return to the United States and her desire to be home. Sends sympathy for Susie's bout of dyspepsia, discouraging the consumption of "warm bread" to relieve symptoms. Recounts the attendance of late evening, formal dinners while having been in Germany with details to courses served and the attire of women in attendance. She reflects on the election and inauguration of her brother, Ulysses S. Grant, as president of the United States, writing, "Brother's election, was in my estimation a foregone conclusion many months before it was submitted to the vote of the people; unwilling as I with the other member of our family felt for him to be called . . . [yet] I [became] convinced that the public good required it."
