Manuscript Music Books collection, 1764-1890 (majority within 1780-1825)

This collection is made up of 51 handwritten music books dating from 1764 to 1890, with the majority being from the 19th century. The music includes from transcriptions/variations of famous works, chorale music, original compositions, and dance music. Much of the collection has no stated geographical location, though Pennsylvania is well represented.
The manuscripts are predominantly in English or German. Vocal tunes comprise a majority of the music present, regardless of genre. Multiple volumes includes music with antiquated form of the C clef. Both men and women wrote or were in possession of these manuscripts and many include dedications to friends or family members. Some of the manuscripts are transcribed copies of popular music theory books; in these cases, the author only transcribed a portion of the original. Several manuscripts include multi-colored, watercolor or pen and ink illustrations and lettering.

This leather-bound volume contains rudiments, tunes, and songs/poems. It includes a decorative manuscript title page, "Elisabeth Martin her vocal or musick book made by William Oliver in The year of our Lord MDCCLXIV", with Pennsylvania Dutch style floral illustrations. The tunes in the book are on the recto of the pages, with songs/poems on the verso. Most of the tunes have tenor and bass parts. The parts were not written in musical notes but as abbreviations of "so, la, ti, do". The music is largely sacred, for example "St. David's Tune", "The Hundred Psalm", and "Martyr's Tune". The letters "E. McTEEAR Sepr 26 1786" are etched into the leather. The book was written in red and black ink.

This leather-bound volume contains secular and romantic tunes. The tunes are on the right pages with corresponding lyrics on the facing left pages. Most of the tunes are in tenor clef with some tenor and bass pairs. The parts were not written in musical notes but as abbreviations of "so, la, ti, do". Designs were etched into the leather cover of the book. The music has decorative bar lines and bold double bar lines. Many of the tunes in this book are also present in Ms. Music 1764 Ol and Ms. Music 1780 Mu.

This volume of psalms bears an ownership inscription of Samuel Chave, May 22, 1778. The table of contents is on the inside front cover. There is notation above and below the staff to denote different parts of the song. The vocal lines are written in two, three, or four parts. The volume is bound dos-a-dos, and has paper covers with vellum-reinforced spine.

This volume bears an ownership inscription of Reading Beatty, November 18, 1780, there is a later inscription for Mary Mays Beatty. The contents are largely dances and marches, some military themed. Among them are "The Irish Brigade's March ", "New-Hampshire Quick Step", "The Pantheon Cotillion", "The Lass of the Hill", "The Lass of the Mill", "The Glass-blower's Rant" "The Lexington March with Variations", "The Hessian Minuet", "Liberty" "The Prince of Brunswick's New Minuet", "Money in Both Pockets" "The Devil United". On the flyleaf are pen, ink, and pencil profile portraits. Songs and lyrics accompany the tunes. The index is located near the end of the volume.

This volume bears an ownership inscription in pencil, "H.K. Lesher, Jacksonville, Leb Co, Penna". These sacred tunes are mainly untitled German chorale music written in three parts. The top vocal line is typically the melody, with calligraphic lyrics. The index is located at the end of the book. There is an added design element to the double line bar.

The book includes two title cards, "Mary Nichols, Her Vocal", "Music Book Made By Me, James Trindle, This 22d of Augt 1780". The parts are not written in musical notes but as abbreviations of "so, la, ti, do". The text within the book corresponds to the music. There is a note included by Clements staff explaining the book. The first page with writing has been partially torn. The lettering in the book is a unique design.

This volume bears an ownership inscription of William Lincoln. It consists of sacred and secular music. Most of the tunes are religious, with the secular music being of different musical genres. Much of the religious music is written in the bass clef. A piece of the wooden front cover has broken off. The pages at the end of the book are loose. An index is located towards the end of the book. At the end of the book there are account records that were to be paid to Patty Lincoln.
