James Edward Davis is a teacher who has worked within the Dearborn Public School District, Michigan since he graduated from the University of Michigan. He has been active politically, especially in regards to teacher's rights, and within Michigan churches. The collection contains series of personal biographical papers, family papers, as well as his collected materials from local churches and schools.

Materials include Davis family history, his father's reminiscences of life in Clinton, Michigan, and relating to the United Church of Christ of Clinton, and some personal and biographical papers; pamphlets and flyers relating to student political activities at the University of Michigan; collected materials about local Michigan churches, many of them in Dexter, Mich.; collected materials about Dearborn Public Schools system and schools in Michigan.

Personal/Biographical

The Personal/Biographical series (0.8 linear feet) contains materials from James Davis's time as a student at the University of Michigan, as well as his time as a Dearborn Public School history teacher. A large portion of this series consists of correspondence from his family, friends, and coworkers. This series also contains a large amount of notes from many teaching conventions, personal research, and lesson plans from his early teaching career. The rest of this series consists of Davis's presentations from conferences and his published articles in magazines.

Davis Family papers

The Davis Family series (1 linear foot) contains collected materials from Davis's parents and other family members. The largest portion of this series contains materials from Davis's father, William. These include his personal research notes, his collected political material, as well as an oral recount of the history of the family. There are a few diaries that came from his mother, Mable, amongst other family members.

Collected materials

The Collected Materials series (2.2 linear feet) presents the bulk of the James Edward Davis collection. This series focuses on the various political, religious, and other materials that Davis collected throughout his lifetime. Included here are the Cherry Hill United Presbyterian Church annual reports, membership rosters, and sermons. Other similar records are included for St. Joseph's Catholic Parish, and other churches in South East Michigan. There is a significant amount records from Dearborn Public Schools such as directories, curriculum, and newsletters. Some of the schools included are Fordson High School, Dearborn Junior High School, and Edsel Ford High School. There are also a number of collected political materials documenting his involvement in University of Michigan demonstrations, as well as documentations of teacher's strikes.
